Abstract

Chinese megacities face significant challenges in reducing carbon emissions while balancing economic growth and social welfare. This study constructs an innovative multi-objective optimization model, the SD-NSGA-III model, integrated with a System Dynamics (SD) model and using the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm III (NSGA-III) to optimize resource allocation in Beijing. The model targets environmental, economic, and social goals by establishing a water–land–energy–carbon (WLEC) nexus for analyzing resource allocation strategies and carbon reduction pathways under various constraints. Scenario simulations under the efficiency-oriented scenario indicated a potential reduction in energy carbon emissions of 81.4% by 2030. The fairness-oriented scenario revealed significant trade-offs between equity and emission reductions, emphasizing the need for balanced strategies. Introducing constraints on resources and economic growth significantly reduced median energy carbon emissions to 80 million tons by 2030. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the SD-NSGA-III model in providing actionable strategies for achieving carbon neutrality and sustainable development in cities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

7. Sustainable Spatial Distribution and Determinants of Key Rural Tourism Villages in China: Promoting Balanced Regional Development.

Abstract

Understanding the spatial distribution and sustainable development of rural tourism is essential for promoting balanced regional growth and formulating optimized policy strategies. This study aims to provide insights into sustainable development and policy optimization. Utilizing geographic information system technology, dominance analysis, and Geodetector statistical methods, this research offers a comprehensive examination of the spatial patterns and determinants of these distributions. The findings reveal significant regional disparities and clustering, with a higher concentration of key villages in economically developed eastern and central regions and fewer in the less developed western regions. The dominance analysis highlights that provinces such as Zhejiang, Shandong, and Beijing demonstrate strong advantages across multiple dimensions, including ecological environment, economic development, tourism infrastructure, transportation accessibility, policy support, and social development. Conversely, regions such as Ningxia, Qinghai, and Tibet exhibit lower dominance scores, indicating challenges in rural tourism development due to limited resources and infrastructure. Key influencing factors include forest coverage, GDP per capita, the number of star-rated hotels, transportation network density, policy initiatives, and urbanization rates. The results underscore the importance of a multi-dimensional approach to enhance rural tourism competitiveness and suggest targeted strategies for underperforming regions. This study contributes to advancing the theoretical framework of sustainable rural tourism and provides actionable insights for policymakers to foster balanced regional development, ecological conservation, and community-centered tourism practices. 18. The Course on Homosexuality at Fudan University: Make a 'Hole' to 'Borrow' Light from Humanities and Social Sciences for Public Health Education in Mainland China

Abstract

In the Fall Semester of 2003, an accredited course for graduate students, entitled "Homosexual Health Social Sciences," was launched at the School of Public Health of Fudan University, located in Shanghai, China. Using participant observation, in-depth interview and document review, this article details the experiences and strategies in establishing the first course on homosexuality in China. Moving beyond biopsychosocial medical mode, the course was designed from the perspectives of humanities and social sciences in the context of HIV/AIDS. Although only a few graduate students enrolled in the course, attendance of the lectures averaged 100 persons, and it has had deep socio-cultural impacts on university students, the gay community and the domestic and international mass media because of its pioneering practice and its teachers' eminent effects. Abstract

This study aimed to assess the diagnostic value of the latent transforming growth factor-beta binding protein-1 (LTBP-1) in distinguishing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) from patients with hepatitis or liver cirrhosis. The protein levels of LTBP-1 or AFP in circulating plasma were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or chemiluminescence in four cohorts: HCC (n = 167), liver cirrhosis (n = 50), chronic hepatitis B (CHB, n = 50), and healthy individuals (n = 104). Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves and area under the curves (AUC) of the proteins were calculated. Results showed that plasma levels of LTBP-1 were significantly higher in HCC patients than those in other three groups. LTBP-1 showed a better diagnostic performance (AUC = 0.74, 95% CI: 0.67-0.80) in distinguishing HCC from the CHB or cirrhosis patients, compared to AFP (AUC = 0.59, 95% CI: 0.52-0.65). In the early-stage HCCs investigated, diagnostic performance of LTBP-1 (AUC = 0.77, 95% CI: 0.70-0.84) remained better than that of AFP (AUC = 0.61, 95% CI: 0.52-0.69). Combination of LTBP-1 and AFP showed increased diagnostic efficiency than any of the two proteins performed alone, for both all HCC (AUC = 0.78, 95% CI: 0.72-0.83) and early-stage HCC (AUC = 0.80, 95% CI: 0.74-0.87). These findings proposed that LTBP-1 may be a promising biomarker for distinguishing HCC from the CHB or liver cirrhosis patients, especially for the early-stage HCC.

Abstract

Based on a combined methodology of a survey, in-depth interviews, and group discussions, this paper focuses on the local knowledge, experience, and practices of using Chinese universities as platforms to introduce sexuality and gender. It examines Chinese social and political contexts of sexuality and sexual education, through existing conceptual frameworks of sex/sexuality, and the voices of the students, teachers, researchers, and administrative authorities. This paper analyzes the obstacles and facilitators at the institutional level and individual capacity level and the strategies currently used to overcome the obstacles accordingly. It also provides recommendations for capacity building and resources for future work.
