3. Motion Artifact Correction for OCT Microvascular Images Based on Image Feature Matching.

Abstract

Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), a functional extension of optical coherence tomography (OCT), is widely employed for high‐resolution imaging of microvascular networks. However, due to the relatively low scan rate of OCT, the artifacts caused by the involuntary bulk motion of tissues severely impact the visualization of microvascular networks. This study proposes a fast motion correction method based on image feature matching for OCT microvascular images. First, the rigid motion‐related mismatch between B‐scans is compensated through the image feature matching based on the improved oriented FAST and rotated BRIEF algorithm. Then, the axial motion within A‐scan lines in each B‐scan image is corrected according to the displacement deviation between the detected boundaries achieved by the Scharr operator in a non‐rigid transformation manner. Finally, an optimized intensity‐based Doppler variance algorithm is developed to enhance the robustness of the OCTA imaging. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the method. Abstract

Anisotropic elasticity measurements of the retina are essential for retinal disease diagnosis and function assessment. Optical coherence elastography (OCE) is a high-resolution imaging technique for mapping the elasticity distribution of tissues. However, previous OCE measurements quantified the tissue elasticity in a single direction, resulting in a biased estimation of the elastic properties. In this study, we propose an OCE method with acoustic radiation force (ARF) excitation to map the retinal anisotropic elasticity in the depth and lateral directions. The axial elasticity was analyzed using the natural frequency of free vibration, and the lateral elasticity was quantified using the elastic wave velocity. After evaluating the feasibility of the OCE method on the phantoms, the anisotropic elasticity of ex vivo porcine retinas was mapped. The results show that the OCE method with ARF excitation can assess the elasticity in orthogonal directions and provide a comprehensive understanding of the elasticity of the anisotropic tissues. Abstract

This article discusses a case of a 54-year-old Chinese woman with SAPHO syndrome, a rare auto-inflammatory disorder characterized by skin lesions and osteoarticular involvement, combined with optic neuritis. The patient experienced symptoms such as palmoplantar pustulosis, chest wall pain, and blurred vision in the right eye. After unsuccessful treatment with corticosteroids, the patient was switched to tofacitinib, which resulted in significant improvement in skin lesions, bone pain, and vision. The article suggests that tofacitinib may be an effective treatment option for ocular involvement in SAPHO syndrome when conventional treatments are ineffective. [Extracted from the article]

Introduction: Blau syndrome (BS) is a rare autoimmune disease. We report here an atypical case of BS. Case Presentation: We present a case of late-onset eye manifestations in a Chinese girl of 18 years old with sporadic BS, presenting with panuveitis. We performed comprehensive ocular examinations including fluorescein fundus angiography and indocyanine green angiography for her. The oral hormone plus local anti-inflammatory eye drops have well controlled the inflammation of her eyes. Abstract

Purpose: There are primarily two techniques for affixing the scleral buckle (SB) to the sclera in the repair of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD): scleral tunnels or scleral sutures. Methods: This retrospective study examined all patients with primary RRD who were treated with primary SB or SB combined with vitrectomy from January 1, 2015 through December 31, 2015 across six sites. Two cohorts were examined: SB affixed using scleral sutures versus scleral tunnels. Pre- and postoperative variables were evaluated including visual acuity, anatomic success, and postoperative strabismus. Results: The mean preoperative logMAR VA for the belt loop cohort was 1.05 ± 1.06 (Snellen 20/224) and for the scleral suture cohort was 1.03 ± 1.04 (Snellen 20/214, p = 0.846). The respective mean postoperative logMAR VAs were 0.45 ± 0.55 (Snellen 20/56) and 0.46 ± 0.59 (Snellen 20/58, p = 0.574). The single surgery success rate for the tunnel cohort was 87.3% versus 88.6% for the suture cohort (p = 0.601). Three patients (1.0%) in the scleral tunnel cohort developed postoperative strabismus, but only one patient (0.1%) in the suture cohort (p = 0.04, multivariate p = 0.76). All cases of strabismus occurred in eyes that underwent SB combined with PPV (p = 0.02). There were no differences in vision, anatomic success, or strabismus between scleral tunnels versus scleral sutures in eyes that underwent primary SB. Conclusion: Scleral tunnels and scleral sutures had similar postoperative outcomes. Combined PPV/SB in eyes with scleral tunnels might be a risk for strabismus post retinal detachment surgery.

Abstract

Objective: Accumulating evidence suggests the critical role of autophagy in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy (DR). In the current study, we aim to identify autophagy genes involved in DR via microarray analyses. Methods: Gene microarrays were performed to identify differentially expressed lncRNAs/mRNAs between normal and DR retinas. Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analyses of lncRNA-coexpressed mRNAs were used to determine the related pathological pathways and biological modules. Real-time polymerase chain reactions (PCR) were conducted to validate the microarray analyses. Results: A total of 2474 significantly dysregulated lncRNAs and 959 differentially expressed mRNAs were identified in the retina of DR. Based upon Signalnet analysis, Bcl2, Gabarapl2, Atg4c, and Atg16L1 participated the process of cell death in DR. Moreover, real-time PCR revealed significant upregulation of Atg16L1. Conclusion: This study indicated the importance and potential role of Atg16L1, one of the autophagy genes, as a biomarker in DR development and progression.

Abstract

The changes of biomechanical properties, especially the elasticity of the ocular tissues, are closely related to some ophthalmic diseases. Currently, the ophthalmic optical coherence elastography (OCE) systems are dedicated either to the anterior segment or to the retina. The elasticity measurements of the whole eye remain challenging. Here we demonstrated an acoustic radiation force optical coherence elastography (ARF-OCE) method to quantify the elasticity of the cornea and the retina. The experiment results show that the Young’s moduli of the cornea and the retina were 16.66 ± 6.51 kPa and 207.96 ± 4.75 kPa, respectively. Our method can measure the elasticity of the anterior segment and the posterior segment, and provides a powerful tool to enhance ophthalmology research.

Purpose To measure intravitreal low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 6 (LRP6) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels in the eyes of patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and to observe their correlation with PDR activity. Methods Fifty-five eyes of 55 patients were enrolled consecutively. Vitreous samples from 30 eyes with PDR and 25 eyes with nondiabetic macular disease were collected. Abstract

Background/aimsVitrectomy to repair retinal detachment is often performed with either non-contact wide-angle viewing systems or wide-angle contact viewing systems. The purpose of this study is to assess whether the viewing system used is associated with any differences in surgical outcomes of vitrectomy for primary non-complex retinal detachment repair.MethodsThis is a multicenter, interventional, retrospective, comparative study. Eyes that underwent non-complex primary retinal detachment repair by either pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) alone or in combination with scleral buckle/PPV in 2015 were evaluated. The viewing system at the time of the retinal detachment repair was identified and preoperative patient characteristics, intraoperative findings and postoperative outcomes were recorded.ResultsA total of 2256 eyes were included in our analysis. Of those, 1893 surgeries used a non-contact viewing system, while 363 used a contact lens system. There was no statistically significant difference in single surgery anatomic success at 3 months (p=0.72), or final anatomic success (p=0.40). Average postoperative visual acuity for the contact-based cases was logMAR 0.345 (20/44 Snellen equivalent) compared with 0.475 (20/60 Snellen equivalent) for non-contact (p=0.001). After controlling for numerous confounding variables in multivariable analysis, viewing system choice was no longer statistically significant (p=0.097).ConclusionThere was no statistically significant difference in anatomic success achieved for primary retinal detachment repair when comparing non-contact viewing systems to contact lens systems. Postoperative visual acuity was better in the contact-based group but this was not statistically significant when confounding factors were controlled for.

Abstract

Background: To evaluate the anatomical and visual outcomes by par plana vitrectomy with or without internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling in highly myopic eyes with macular hole retinal detachment (MHRD).Methods: MEDLINE (Ovid, PubMed) and EMBASE were used for data collection up to September 30, 2015. The parameters of anatomical success, macular hole closure and improved best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at or beyond 6 months after operation were assessed as the primary outcome measurement. The meta-analysis was performed with the fixed-effects model.Results: Seven comparative analyses involving a total of 373 patients were included in the present meta-analysis. Statistically the pooled data showed significant relative risk (RR) in terms of primary reattachment between ILM peeling and non-peeling groups (RR, 1.19; 95 % CI, 1.04 to 1.36; P = 0.012). An effect favoring ILM peeling with regard to macular hole closure was also detected (RR, 1.71; 95 % CI, 1.20 to 2.43; P = 0.003). However, no statistically significant difference was found in the improved BCVA (logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution) at 6 months or more (95 % CI, -0.31 to 0.44; P = 0.738).Conclusions: There is no proved benefit of postoperative visual improvement.
