13. Bibliometric Network Analysis of Crop Yield Gap Research over the Past Three Decades.

Abstract

Achieving global food security requires an understanding of the current status and the future trends in the yield gap for cropping systems worldwide. The aim of this study was to scientifically understand the existing yield gap research, recognize the knowledge base and influential articles, and uncover key research themes and how these have evolved over the past three decades. Bibliometric methods were used to analyze articles related to the yield gap available in the largest scientific database, the Web of Science. A total of 6049 relevant articles published from 1993 to 2023 were numerically analyzed for patterns, trends, and clusters. The findings identified a few primary authors of widely cited publications. Geographically, the United States and China were the two major contributors to the publication pool, with articles from China mostly affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences and China Agricultural University, while the United States had a more scattered distribution of affiliated institutions. The research on yield gaps primarily focused on biological factors, such as the effects of crop varieties, agronomic management, climate change, and soil conditions, with a limited exploration of social and economic factors. Within the auspices of the current food issues worldwide, this study provides a thorough view of the progress and key topics in crop yield gap research, contributing to the existing body of knowledge and providing guidance for researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders involved in agricultural productivity enhancement and sustainable food production. Amid the increasing trend in hunger worldwide over the past decade, we thus concluded that, by establishing appropriate benchmarks, re-prioritizing research needs, and focusing on transforming natural resources rather than inputs, the crop yield gap approach can be useful in terms of the clear inclusion of local contexts and socioeconomic constraints. Abstract

Structural and morphological controlled ZnS nanostructures were synthesized with solvothermal method by using the mixed solvent of ethylenediamine (En) and deionized water. ZnS nanowires were synthesized successfully. The mechanism of the morphological evolution of ZnS nanostructures was concluded by studying the influences of different synthetical conditions on the properties of ZnS nanowires, which included the volume ratios of En and deionized water, the mole ratios of two precursors, different zinc precursors, reaction temperatures and times. The optical properties of ZnS nanostructures were also examined by photoluminescence and absorption spectra.

Abstract

SnS is a promising material used in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting systems because of its proper optical band gap (1–1.6 eV) for solar energy conversion. In this paper, thickness tunable SnS nanosheets were synthesized with one-pot method by using SnCl 2 and 1-dodecanethiol as the precursors, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectra measurements confirmed the structural and phase purities of SnS nanosheets. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements characterized the morphological properties of the products. The photocurrent densities of SnS nanoparticles with different thicknesses were compared, which indicated that thick SnS nanosheets yielded stronger photocurrent density than thin ones under illumination of AM 1.5.

Abstract

Hexagonal SnS 2 /SnS nanosheets were synthesized facilely by one step method. The final products were mainly determined by reaction temperature and mole ratios of the precursors. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra, Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to analyze the phase purities and morphological properties of SnS 2 /SnS nanosheets. UV–vis absorption spectra were measured to confirm the bandgaps of SnS 2 /SnS nanosheets. Photoelectric characterizations revealed the good photovoltaic properties of SnS 2 /SnS nanosheets.

35. Carbon cycling from rice-duck mutual ecosystem during double cropping rice growth season

Abstract

Raising duck in paddy field is a traditional agricultural model in China.This model can increase the efficiency of using paddy field while rice plant is growing.Field experiments on C cycling from rice-duck mutual ecosystem were conducted from May to October in 2010 in the double cropping rice region in Hunan,and a conventional rice field was used as control.The Input-Output Analysis method was applied in this study to analyze C cycling in both rice-duck and conventional rice fields.Throughout the plant growing season,neither chemical pesticides nor herbicides were applied in rice-duck mutual ecosystems,and the surface water was maintained about 10 cm in depth during the period of raising ducks.Ducks of 22-day-old were introduced into the paddy field based on the holding capacity of 450 ducks per ha 24 days after seedling of early rice transplantation.Ducks of 30-day-old were introduced into the paddy field based on the holding capacity of 450 ducks per ha 10 days after seedling of late rice transplantation.These ducks were retrieved after the complete heading stage of rice in the experiments.During the early rice growth season,the recycled C from weed and insects in rice-duck mutual ecosystems were 60.53 kg/hm2 and 2.75 kg/hm2,respectively.The C inputs from urea,duckling,plant seedling and feed were 22.5 kg/hm2;15.79 kg/hm2;20.42 kg/hm2 and 630.56 kg/hm2,respectively.While the C outputs in the rice-duck mutual ecosystems consisted of 42.21% rice seed,38.42% rice straws,18.50%(CH4 and CO2)and 0.87% duck.During the late rice growth season,the recycled C from weed and insect in rice-duck mutual ecosystems were 3.64 kg/hm2 and 6.73 kg/hm2,respectively.The C inputs from urea,duckling,seedling and feed were 22.5 kg/hm2;15.93 kg/hm2;222.33 kg/hm2 and 966.85 kg/hm2,correspondingly.while the C outputs in rice-duck mutual ecosystems consisted of 53.80% rice seed,35.12% rice straws,8.67%(CH4 and CO2),1.07% duck.Throughout the double cropping rice season,Soil C sequestration was 2103.2 kg/hm2,and C sequestration by rice straws and rice seeds was 15109.96 kg/hm2,by rice root was 1261.34 kg/hm2.The feces C introduced by duck growth was 229.87 kg/hm2.The C inputs from feeds were very high in the duck sub-system,which was 1597.41 kg/hm2 during double cropping rice growth season.Analysis of C budget in double cropping rice-duck mutual ecosystems showed that rice-duck mutualism acted as a net CO2 sink and possessed a better carbon storage potential.

Abstract

In order to investigate high densities and planting methods of summer maize in north China,in 2010—2011,two varieties(Ludan 981,LD981,and Ludan 818,LD818) were selected and planted in two densities(6 0000 and 90000 plants/hm2) at two planting methods(single and double plants at one place).In this experiment,eight treatments were designed to study the effect of planting methods on root-shoot development and grain yield of summer maize under high densities.The results showed that vertical distribution of canopy resulted in a trend that dry matter weight increased with planting density increased;however,root vertical distribution resulted in a opposite trend.Under high density conditions,there were different competitive ability of root and shoot between different maize varieties.The canopy of LD981 was more sensitive to space,and its space competition of root was stronger than that of the canopy,hence,the yield limiting factor of LD981 was the kernel storage capacity;however,the root of LD818 was more sensitive to space,and its space competition of canopy was stronger than that of the root,hence,the yield limiting factor of LD818 was the spike number per unit.Under the condition of 60000 plants/hm2,the quality of canopy structure and function of LD981 was better,double plants at one place reduced competitive stress in the canopy,as a result,achieved root and shoot equilibrium.Hence,the population yield enhanced;under the condition of 90000 plants/hm2,the quality of canopy structure and function of LD818 was better,double plants at one place alleviated root competition,the quality of canopy structure and function improved partly,therefore,the root and shoot coordinated,which let to the yield increased.

40. Effects of changing assimilate supply on starch synthesis in maize kernels under high temperature stress

Abstract

High temperature stress (HT) significantly reduces maize yield by reducing the starch accumulation in kernels. However, the effect of HT on starch synthesis is controversial, whether by reducing the supply of assimilates or directly affecting the starch synthesis in the kernels. To clarify the potential mechanisms, a heat sensitive maize hybrid Xianyu 335 (XY) was subjected to 30/20°C (maximum/ minimum temperature, control) and 40/30°C for 7 consecutive days at the seed setting stage. Synchronous pollination (SP), apical pollination (AP) and shading treatments were adopted to change the inherent source-sink ratio in maize plant. Results showed that the weight of apical kernels reduced by 11.9% under 40°C in SP treatment. The 13C contents, starch accumulation and activity of cell wall invertase (CWIN) also decreased by 15.9, 36.7, and 16.4% respectively under HT. In shading treatment, 40/30°C caused even higher reduction in 13C contents, starch accumulation and CWIN activity because of the decreased assimilates supply. On the contrary, in AP treatment, starch contents and CWIN were increased 22.0 and 18.5% under 40/30°C, which caused similar weight and 13C contents with the kernels in SP and shading regardless of the temperature treatments. Consistent with the apical kernels in AP treatment, HT treatment did not have negative effects on the middle kernels both in the SP and shading treatments, which the kernel weight and starch content were not decreased under HT. All the kernels were exposed to the same environment with HT or control, but their responses to HT were different. The originally disturbed starch synthesis in the apical kernels under HT could be salvaged by increasing the carbon supply through AP treatment. The different performance between the middle kernels, apical kernels in AP and the apical kernels in SP or shading treatments meant that reduced carbon supply was a critical mechanism for the inhibited starch accumulation. Our findings provided a theoretical basis for further improving the understanding of kernel abortion under HT.

45. Impact of Bt Cotton on the Farmer's Livelihood System in China

Abstract

Dans le but d'analyser les impacts du coton-Bt sur la viabilité du système de production paysanne, nous avons interviewé 169 paysans ainsi que le personnel de vulgarisation dans la principale zone de production cotonnière de la province du Hebei au cours des campagnes 2002 et 2003. Une méthode intégrée a été utilisée en suivant une approche multidisciplinaire associant agronomie, économie et sociologie. Les résultats montrent que le coton-Bt a fait augmenter les surfaces cotonnières ainsi que les revenus. Pour 67% des paysans enquêtés indiquent avoir continuellement augmenté la surface consacrée depuis 1997. Le revenu du coton, en un seul cycle se révèle supérieur au revenu combiné d'un cycle de blé et d'un cycle de maïs. Le revenu issu du coton joue un rôle significatif en faveur de l'investissement pour l'éducation, loisir et soins médicaux. Les impacts socio-économiques ne sont néanmoins pas optimaux car ils sont encore limités par divers facteurs. Le manque de main-d'oeuvre et de terre en sont les principaux. La productivité est réduite par le prix élevé des semences de coton-Bt ce qui pousse les paysans à utiliser les semences de leur propre production (cas de 42% des paysans en 2002 et 2003). Les paysans manquent encore de maîtrise technique dans l'utilisation du coton-Bt : 78% des paysans l'admettent alors que 94% d'entre eux se plaignent ne pas obtenir d'information de la part des services techniques ou de vulgarisation. Un plus grand succès dans l'utilisation du coton-Bt suppose d'aller au-delà de la simple fourniture de semences et il interpelle pour une assistance continue en R&D, notamment pour parvenir à une connaissance complète des caractéristiques du coton-Bt pour pouvoir l'intégrer de manière optimale dans le système de production du paysan.

49. Comparison of ecological evaluation results on conservation tillage by different methods.

Abstract

Comprehensive evaluation on agricultural production technologies can provide scientific base for technology application for agriculture production. However, a good comprehensive evaluation on agricultural production system must integrate the economic, ecological and environmental aspects of a production system. Agricultural production should not only focus on the yield increasing, but also should avoid the degradation of ecosystem services and alleviate the negative environmental impacts. Therefore, when selecting an appropriate agricultural technology for a production system, a comprehensive evaluation is needed for decision-make process. In recent decades, many kinds of theories and methods in the ecological economic research have been developed and some are used widely, such as emergy, ecosystem services, ecosystem health, ecological footprint, life cycle assessment, etc. However, each method has its independent theory base and calculation process. In additional, single method is hard to meet the multi-aspect evaluation needs. Therefore, to compare the results of different ecological evaluation methods, three methods including emergy (EM), ecosystem services (ES) and life circle assessment (LCA) were used in this research to evaluate economic, ecological and environmental concerns of an agricultural production technology. Four kinds of conservation tillage (CT) patterns in Jilin province, northeastern of China were taken as case study. The four CT patterns include 'direct-seeding on ridge side and standing-stubble return' (CT1), 'wide/narrow row alternation planting and high stubble mulching' (CT2), 'stubble mulching and direct-seeding on ridge' (CT3) and 'cutting stubble combined ridge with subsoiling' (CT4). The results showed that four kinds of CT methods had a consistent trend of advantage of eco-ecological effects compared to the conventional tillage (CK). Based on evaluation result of EM, the average value of EYR (emergy yield ratio) of the four CT methods was 9.6% higher than that of CK. The ESI (emergy sustainability index) of the four CT methods was 7.0% higher than that of CK. The total average value of ES of the four CT methods was about 2.1 times higher than that of CK. For the results of LCA, as compared to CK, the potential environmental effect of the four CT methods in term of energy consumption, greenhouse gas emission, acidification and eutrophication were lower, which accounted for 14.62%, 82.82%, 15.37% and 15.28% respectively of the CK (100%). The results also showed that the ranking order for the four CT were different for each of the evaluating result of EM, ES and LCA. For the result of emergy, the ranking of the four conservation tillage was: CT3>CT4>CT2>CT1. However, the ranking order was CT2>CT1>CT3>CT4 for ES and CT2>CT3>CT4>CT1 for the LCA method. These results indicated that multiple methods were needed for holistic evaluating the eco-ecological effects of agricultural technology. From our results we found that the EM method was mainly suited for evaluating the energy use efficiency and economic benefit, the ES method was more on the ecologic functions of maintenances, the LCA was suited for assessing the environmental impacts. The three methods were recommended as an integrated evaluation for agricultural technologies. Finally, combining evaluation results from of EM, ES and LCA, the ranking of the four CT methods was CT2>CT3>CT4>CT1. 50. Organic waste recycling application increases N availability and mitigates N 2 O emission without crop yield penalty in the North China Plain.

Abstract

Introduction: Agricultural organic waste recycling can supply nutrients for crop production and partially replace chemical nitrogen fertilizers, which is beneficial for waste management and environmental protection. Nevertheless, comprehensive evaluation of the effects of different organic materials applications on crop yield and the environment is limited., Methods: Therefore, in this study, a comprehensive investigation of the synergistic effects of straw, pig manure, and biogas residue recycling on the wheat ( Triticum aestivum L. ) and maize ( Zea mays L. ) systems was carried out in the North China Plain. Field experiments were conducted from 2019 to 2021, comprising five treatments: straw (ST), pig manure (PM), and biogas residue (BR) partially replacing chemical nitrogen fertilizer, sole application of chemical nitrogen fertilizer (CF), and a control with no nitrogen application (WN)., Results and Discussion: The results showed that organic materials significantly increased soil total nitrogen (3.04%-9.10%) and N recovery efficiency (RE N ; 42.21%-44.99%), but pig manure was more beneficial in increasing crop yields (3.50%), especially wheat yields (8.72%), and RE N was significantly higher than that of the other treatments. Organic materials performed differently in wheat and maize seasons, and wheat yield could be improved by organic materials return. Organic materials stimulated N 2 O emission in wheat season (4.28%-32.20%), while biogas residue inhibited the N 2 O emission in maize season (47.47%). The negative effect of straw and biogas residue on yield decreased with increasing years of return, and pig manure continued to contribute to yield.
