Abstract

We compare the morphological modifications in gelatin films, induced with an 800nm femtosecond amplifier, in subject of the number of input pulses and the input pulse duration. Foam is formed in all cases, but only under certain conditions the desirable structures that mimic the native subcellular matrix are formed. The number of input pulses significantly changes the foam structure, allowing a well-defined nano-structuring for optimal tissue-engineering.

7. Assessment of campus community readiness for tailoring implementation of evidence-based online programs to prevent risky substance use among university students in Germany.

Abstract

Research suggests that online interventions preventing risky substance use can improve student health. There is an increasing interest in transferring evidence-based online programs into university health promotion practice. However, little is known about how to best tailor the implementation process to capacities and context of individual universities. The purpose of this study was to assess the level of readiness (capacity) of German universities concerning the implementation of evidence-based online programs for risky substance use prevention employing an adapted Community Readiness Assessment (CRA) and to develop tailored action plans for implementation. The CRA involved 43 semi-structured interviews with key persons at 10 German universities. The interviews addressed five dimensions (knowledge of efforts, leadership, community climate, knowledge of the issue, and resources) at nine possible readiness stages (no awareness—ownership) and additional contextual factors. Overall, readiness for implementing online interventions across universities was rather low. Universities readiness levels ranged between the denial stage with a score of 2.1 and the preplanning stage with a score of 4.4. University-specific readiness was very heterogeneous. On the basis of the results of the CRA, universities received feedback and options for training on how to take the necessary steps to increase readiness and to prepare program implementation. The adapted version of the CRA was well suited to inform future implementation of evidence-based online programs for the prevention of risky substance use at participating universities. 18. Few-cycle high- energy pulse compression at MHz repetition rate

Abstract

We demonstrate a simple method for spectral broadening and compression of laser pulses at megahertz repetition rates by self-phase modulation in a large mode area (LMA) fiber. In order to avoid the currently limiting factor of damage by self-focusing, we positively chirp the input pulse, which allows coupling of significantly more energy into the fiber, while maintaining the same spectral bandwidth and compression as compared to the Fourier-limited case at lower energy. Using a commercial chirped pulse Ti:Sa oscillator (Femtolasers, Femtosource XL) with 55fs, 400nJ pulses at 5MHz and an LMA fiber with 25m core diameter, we generate 16fs, 350nJ pulses, which is a factor of 4 more energy than possible with unchirped input pulses. Good stability has been measured over at least 1 hour for the chirped case and unchirped case. Furthermore, with a 5m core diameter LMA fiber we generated compressed pulses with 6fs and 18nJ output energy. This would allow a carrier-to-envelope phase stabilization of the laser system by external selfstabilization via acoustic difference-frequency modulation. The compact size and its simplicity makes the combination of a chirped pulse oscillator with chirped-fiber-broadening an attractive option for ultrafast spectroscopy at MHz repetition rate.

Abstract

Purpose: This report examines cognitive complaints and neuropsychological (NP) testing outcomes in patients with early-stage breast cancer after the initiation of endocrine therapy (ET) to determine whether this therapy plays any role in post-treatment cognitive complaints., Patients and Methods: One hundred seventy-three participants from the Mind Body Study (MBS) observational cohort provided data from self-report questionnaires and NP testing obtained at enrollment (T1, before initiation of ET), and 6 months later (T2). Bivariate analyses compared demographic and treatment variables, cognitive complaints, depressive symptoms, quality of life, and NP functioning between those who received ET versus not. Multivariable linear regression models examined predictors of cognitive complaints at T2, including selected demographic variables, depressive symptoms, ET use, and other medical variables, along with NP domains that were identified in bivariate analyses., Results: Seventy percent of the 173 MBS participants initiated ET, evenly distributed between tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitors. ET-treated participants reported significantly increased language and communication (LC) cognitive complaints at T2 (P = .003), but no significant differences in NP test performance. Multivariable regression on LC at T2 found higher LC complaints significantly associated with T1 LC score (P < .001), ET at T2 (P = .004), interaction between ET and past hormone therapy (HT) (P < .001), and diminished improvement in NP psychomotor function (P = .05). Depressive symptoms were not significant (P = .10)., Conclusion: Higher LC complaints are significantly associated with ET 6 months after starting treatment and reflect diminished improvements in some NP tests.
