Post-panamax cranes, the largest container gantry cranes, are now being used by ports in Japan, UK, Korea, Taiwan, US and China. Gantry cranes, which handle shipment of containers to smaller harbours, were upgraded to meet the requirement of post-panamax vessels. APL, which has a new container terminal in Los Angeles, CA, has acquired extra post-panamax capacity cranes. Post-panamax cranes, which have the longest span and operate faster, are becoming a standard in the crane industry.

The Massachusetts Port Authority intends to improve its Conley Terminal container cranes to improve its cargo handling capabilities. Crane heights will be augmented to allow their use during high tides. One crane has already been modified while work on a second will start on December 5 at a total cost of $2.8 million. The height of the cranes will be increased by 40 feet through the inclusion of twenty-foot steel inserts at each support.
