Motivated by the increasing abundance of data describing real-world networks that exhibit dynamical features, we propose an extension of the exponential random graph models (ERGMs) that accommodates the time variation of its parameters. Inspired by the fast-growing literature on dynamic conditional score models, each parameter evolves according to an updating rule driven by the score of the ERGM distribution. We demonstrate the flexibility of score-driven ERGMs (SD-ERGMs) as data-generating processes and filters and show the advantages of the dynamic version over the static one. We discuss two applications to temporal networks from financial and political systems. First, we consider the prediction of future links in the Italian interbank credit network. Second, we show that the SD-ERGM allows discriminating between static or time-varying parameters when used to model the U.S. Congress co-voting network dynamics., (© 2024 Author(s). Targeting the PD1/PD-L1 immune checkpoint pathway has rapidly become a therapeutic strategy for melanoma patients. Indeed, the quantification of PD-L1 expression by immunohistochemistry (IHC) in melanoma samples is already required, in some contexts, to allow access to anti-PD-1/PD-L1 immunotherapy. Despite a rising demand for PD-L1 testing, paralleling increasing cumulative experience in its assessment and quantification, it is fair to recognize that PD-L1 evaluation in melanoma samples still presents some critical issues. The aim of this technical report is to develop and validate a multiplex double staining protocol for PD-L1/SOX10 in Ventana Benchmark Ultra for routine practice. Our results show that double labeling provides the necessary tools to identify PD-L1 + melanoma cells clearly. The simultaneous visualization of 2 different proteins targets allows the topographical relationship between the 2 labeling to be evaluated within the context of the tissue morphology. Objectives: In comparison to conventional combustible cigarettes, Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) including both e-cigarettes (ECs) and heated tobacco products (HTPs) significantly reduce exposure to toxic chemical emissions. However, their impact on dental plaque remains unclear. This study measures dental plaque in ENDS (ECs and HTPs) users using quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF) technology, comparing them with current, former, and never smokers., Methods: This cross-sectional study compared dental plaque measurements using QLF technology (Q-ray cam™ Pro) among current smokers (≥10 cigarettes/day), former smokers (quit ≥6 months), never smokers, and exclusive ENDS users (quit ≥6 months). Dental plaque measurements were expressed as ΔR30 (total area of mature dental plaque) and ΔR120 (greater plaque thickness/maturation-calculus). The Simple Oral Hygiene (SOH) score was calculated by the QLF proprietary software. Statistical analyses including ANCOVA was performed by R version (4.2.3) with p < 0.05., Results: A total 30 smokers, 24 former smokers, 29 never smokers, and 53 ENDS users were included. Current smokers had significantly higher ΔR30 and ΔR120 values compared to other groups (p < 0.001). ENDS users showed plaque levels similar to never and former smokers (p > 0.05) but significantly lower than current smokers (p < 0.01). Although ENDS users showed a lower SOH score than smokers, this difference was not statistically significant. Daily toothbrushing and mouthwash usage were significant covariates., Conclusion: ENDS users exhibited reduced accumulation of dental plaque and calculus compared with current smokers., Clinical Significance: Exclusive ENDS use could less impact dental plaque accumulation compared to cigarette smoking. Purpose: Developmental assessment is part of a comprehensive autism evaluation. During in-person evaluations, developmental assessment is completed via direct testing by an examiner. In telehealth evaluations, developmental assessment relies on caregiver-report instruments. This study examined correspondence between caregiver report and direct testing of developmental skills., Methods: Participants were 93 children, aged 18-42 months, undergoing evaluation for possible autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Caregivers were interviewed with the Developmental Profile, 4th edition (DP-4) via telehealth platform and children were tested in person 2-4 weeks later using the Mullen Scales of Early Learning (MSEL)., Results: Correlations between the DP-4 and MSEL were high (ranging from 0.50 to 0.82) across standard scores, age equivalents, and functional categories, as well as across individual subtests and overall composite scores., Conclusion: The high convergent validity found in this study suggests that the DP-4 provides a suitable proxy for direct developmental testing using the MSEL in the context of telehealth evaluations for ASD in young children, delivering a good estimate of both developmental functioning and presence of delays., Trial Registration: Data were obtained from registered clinical trial NCT05047224, date of registration 2021-09-07., (© 2024. NAVIGATOR is an Italian regional project boosting precision medicine in oncology with the aim of making it more predictive, preventive, and personalised by advancing translational research based on quantitative imaging and integrative omics analyses. The project's goal is to develop an open imaging biobank for the collection and preservation of a large amount of standardised imaging multimodal datasets, including computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography data, together with the corresponding patient-related and omics-related relevant information extracted from regional healthcare services using an adapted privacy-preserving model. The project is based on an open-source imaging biobank and an open-science oriented virtual research environment (VRE). Available integrative omics and multi-imaging data of three use cases (prostate cancer, rectal cancer, and gastric cancer) will be collected. All data confined in NAVIGATOR (i.e., standard and novel imaging biomarkers, non-imaging data, health agency data) will be used to create a digital patient model, to support the reliable prediction of the disease phenotype and risk stratification. The VRE that relies on a well-established infrastructure, called D4Science.org, will further provide a multiset infrastructure for processing the integrative omics data, extracting specific radiomic signatures, and for identification and testing of novel imaging biomarkers through big data analytics and artificial intelligence., (© 2022. In a large South American Reservoir (750 km 2 , limit between Uruguay and Argentina), we characterized the environmental risk posed by cyanobacteria proxies (abundance, toxin concentration, chlorophyll-a) and Escherichia coli abundances, integrating field (six sites, summers 2011-2015) and satellite (750 km 2 , summers 2011-2017) monitoring. We further assessed how well field cyanobacteria quantitative proxies (abundance, toxin concentration, chlorophyll-a and scum formation) used to build a local risk communication system for recreational (bathing) use of waters named "cyano-traffic-light", ongoing since 2011, reflected its outcome. Cyanobacteria abundance in the field ranged from moderate (>20,000 to <100,000 cells mL -1 ) to high-risk (>100,000 cells mL -1 ), and its abundance was positively related to toxin (microcystin) concentration. Mean microcystin concentrations was within the low (≤2 μg L -1 , 50% sites) or moderate (>2 < 10 μg L -1 , 50% sites) risk categories. On rare occasions, toxin concentration posed a high-risk for human health. E. coli abundance was within the high-risk category (>126 CFU 100 mL -1 ) for human health, mostly in the northern part of the reservoir. Cyanobacteria proxies (abundance and toxins) and E. coli abundance were, however, unrelated. The predictive model showed that, out of the four cyanobacteria proxies used to construct the cyano-traffic-light only cyanobacteria abundance (p < 0.05) explained the outcome of the reports, yet with low explanatory power (41%). The satellite monitoring allowed delimiting the extent and magnitude of the environmental risk posed by cyanobacteria at landscape scale (highest risk in the meander parts of the Argentinean side of the reservoir) and producing risk maps that can be used by water management agencies. We examined the relationship between video-based media viewing (screen time), behavioral outcomes, and language development in 120 36-month-old children with a family history of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or no family history of either condition. Participants were classified into one of three diagnostic groups: ASD (n = 20), ADHD Concerns (children with elevated ADHD symptoms; n = 14), or Comparison (n = 86). Children in the ADHD Concerns group spent more time viewing screen media than Comparison children. Increased screen time was associated with lower receptive and expressive language scores across groups. Background: Signs of autism are present in the first 2 years of life, but the average age of diagnosis lags far behind. Instruments that improve detection of autism risk in infancy are needed. This study developed and tested the psychometric properties of a novel video-based approach to detecting ASD in infancy., Methods: A prospective longitudinal study of children at elevated or lower risk for autism spectrum disorder was conducted. Participants were 76 infants with an older sibling with ASD and 37 infants with no known family history of autism. The Video-referenced Infant Rating System for Autism (VIRSA) is a web-based application that presents pairs of videos of parents and infants playing together and requires forced-choice judgments of which video is most similar to the child being rated. Parents rated participants on the VIRSA at 6, 9, 12, and 18 months of age. We examined split-half and test-retest reliability; convergent and discriminant validity; and sensitivity, specificity, and negative and positive predictive value for concurrent and 36-month ASD diagnoses., Results: The VIRSA demonstrated satisfactory reliability and convergent and discriminant validity. VIRSA ratings were significantly lower for children ultimately diagnosed with ASD than children with typical development by 12 months of age. VIRSA scores at 18 months identified all children diagnosed with ASD at that age, as well as 78% of children diagnosed at 36 months., Conclusions: This study represents an initial step in the development of a novel video-based approach to detection of ASD in infancy. The VIRSA's psychometric properties were promising when used by parents with an older affected child, but still must be tested in community samples with no family history of ASD. While previous studies suggested that regressive forms of onset were not common in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), more recent investigations suggest that the rates are quite high and may be under-reported using certain methods. The current study undertook a systematic investigation of how rates of regression differed by measurement method. Infants with (n = 147) and without a family history of ASD (n = 83) were seen prospectively for up to 7 visits in the first three years of life. Reports of symptom onset were collected using four measures that systematically varied the informant (examiner vs. parent), the decision type (categorical [regression absent or present] vs. dimensional [frequency of social behaviors]), and the timing of the assessment (retrospective vs. prospective). Latent class growth models were used to classify individual trajectories to see whether regressive onset patterns were infrequent or widespread within the ASD group. A majority of the sample was classified as having a regressive onset using either examiner (88%) or parent (69%) prospective dimensional ratings. Rates of regression were much lower using retrospective or categorical measures (from 29 to 47%). Agreement among different measurement methods was low. Declining trajectories of development, consistent with a regressive onset pattern, are common in children with ASD and may be more the rule than the exception. The accuracy of widely used methods of measuring onset is questionable and the present findings argue against their widespread use. Many high-profile societal problems involve an individual or group repeatedly attacking another - from child-parent disputes, sexual violence against women, civil unrest, violent conflicts and acts of terror, to current cyber-attacks on national infrastructure and ultrafast cyber-trades attacking stockholders. There is an urgent need to quantify the likely severity and timing of such future acts, shed light on likely perpetrators, and identify intervention strategies. Here we present a combined analysis of multiple datasets across all these domains which account for >100,000 events, and show that a simple mathematical law can benchmark them all. We derive this benchmark and interpret it, using a minimal mechanistic model grounded by state-of-the-art fieldwork. Our findings provide quantitative predictions concerning future attacks; a tool to help detect common perpetrators and abnormal behaviors; insight into the trajectory of a 'lone wolf'; identification of a critical threshold for spreading a message or idea among perpetrators; an intervention strategy to erode the most lethal clusters; and more broadly, a quantitative starting point for cross-disciplinary theorizing about human aggression at the individual and group level, in both real and online worlds.

Introduction: The Neonatal Network of Public Hospitals in the city of Buenos Aires closely monitors the progress of newborn infants with a birth weight less than 1500 g (very low birth weight, VLBW) because it largely contributes to neonatal morbidity and mortality., Objective: To analyze the morbidity and mortality of VLBW infants and determine their riskadjusted mortality using the score of the South American Neonatal Network (Red Neonatal de los países del Conosur de América, NEOCOSUR)., Material and Methods: Live infants born in the network hospitals with a birth weight of 500-1499 g between 2008 and 2010 were included in the study. Data was recorded prospectively using a standardized methodology. Mortality, morbidity and risk-adjusted mortality rates according to the NEOCOSUR score were estimated. Results. There were 92,698 infants born during the study period. Of them, 1.26% weighed less than 1500 g at birth. Only 40.4% of these received a full course of antenatal corticosteroids. A total of 62.7% of these developed respiratory distress syndrome, 5.4% enterocolitis, 10.1% intracranial hemorrhage, and 13.4% severe retinopathy. Early sepsis was observed in 5.6%, and late sepsis in 9.6%. Bronchopulmonary dysplasia was present in 10.7% of the cases. Neonatal mortality was 29.2%, and the adjusted mortality with no major malformations was 25.4%. Survival of infants with a birth weight of =750 g and a gestational age of =26 weeks was 50%. The observed/expected mortality ratio was 1.04, with a large variability., Conclusions: The percentage of VLBW infants who received antenatal corticosteroids was low. The incidence of sepsis and the rate of infants with severe retinopathy of prematurity are high. The risk-adjusted mortality is higher than expected.
