Significant variability is available in the F2 population of brinjal. Top crosses of brinjal Biliudda badane × mullu badane produced from F1 generation were in augmented design at ZARS Shimogga in Kharif 2017. They have several characteristics of plant breeding significance with sufficient scope for added improvement to growing conditions. The F2 study showed significant variation for nine quantitative traits. Close estimates between GCV and PCV values indicated lesser influence of environmental factors on the expression of traits under study. In this investigation, the proportion of genetic contribution of high GCV, PCV coupled with high broad sense heritability and genetic advance to the overall phenotypic expression of the studied traits like number of fruits per plant, number primary branches, number of flowers per plant was high, indicating predominant control of additive genes, and these traits could be improved upon by selection without progeny testing. High magnitude of heritability for most of the characters suggested the progress of improvement in yield and its components. Differences in mean values of parents for various characters indicated involvement of diverse parents in the crosses studied. The F2 plants exceeded either of the parents for most of the characters, which seems to be due to transgressive segregation.

Prolonging the keeping quality of tomatoes is very essential for reduction of great losses in quality and quantity. Fruit shelf life is ripening-associated complex trait affected by many quantitative fruit quality traits. In this study, 30 tomato germplasm lines were characterized for very important less pursued shelf life and its contributing traits. Shelf life ranged from 10.50 to 34.43 days. Slower dehydration rate noticed in tender fruit tissues in turning stage. Slow pace in rate of change in physiological losses in fruit weight led to high shelf life. Fruit firmness ranged from 2.49 to 5.76 kg/cm2 and pericarp thickness from 1.33 to 6.70 mm. High shelf life germplasm lines contained 6.98–19.29 mg/100g and 8.64–13.38 mg/100g of fruit calcium and magnesium content respectively. The fruit epicuticular wax content varied from 34.64 to 96.77 µg/cm2. Calcium, magnesium, and epicuticular wax decrease respiration rate, maintain firmness, delay senescence, reduces incidence of physiological disorders and extend fruit storage life. Higher shelf life in germplasm lines P-4, L-00191, L-03686, AR-23, PKM-1, and Bony best are contributed by higher firmness and epicuticular wax content and high shelf life in Red ball is due to higher firmness, pericarp thickness, calcium, magnesium and epicuticular wax content.

One hundred linseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) genotypes and four checks were evaluated during rabi, 2017-18 for fifteen traits to examine the nature and magnitude of variability, heritability (h2=broad sense) and genetic advance. Analysis of variance revealed that the differences among genotypes were significant for all the characters studied. Knowledge of selection effect on positive or negative changes of a character under improvement is of paramount importance for the success of any plant breeding programme and helps the selection of desirable breeding methods. Heritability and genetic advance are important selection parameters and selection success is a reflectance of selection response. High PCV and GCV values exhibited for number of branches per plant, number of capsules per plant, yield per plant, palmitic acid and linoleic acid indicating wide range of variability with substantial environmental influence on the expression of these traits and provide better opportunity for improvement of these traits through selection. Small differences between GCV and PCV were recorded for all the characters studied which indicated less influence of environment on these characters. High heritability coupled with high Genetic advance as per cent of Mean (GAM >20%) observed for plant height, technical plant height, number of branches per plant, number of capsules per plant, yield per plant, palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid and linolenic acid indicated that these characters are highly heritable.

Knowledge on heterosis, and combining ability is pre requisite for breeding high yielding and good shelf life heterotic hybrids. An investigation was undertaken with each of 3 lines, testers, and 9 hybrids to identify desirable parents and crosses for 20 fruit biochemical, morpho-physiological, and yield traits and to elucidate nature of gene action for shelf life and its contributing traits through Line × Tester analysis. The lines contributed to most of hybrids variability than testers and fruit quality traits had higher degree of SCA variance as compared to GCA variance. pH, ascorbic acid, fruit firmness, and plant height governed by additive gene action. Lycopene, titratable acidity, TSS, calcium, magnesium, pericarp thickness, pulp content, locule number, fruit length, diameter, weight, shelf life, number of branches, number of clusters, number of fruit/cluster, and yield/plant were under the control of non-additive gene action. All the lines and Arka Saurabh were best general combiners and IIHR 2349 × Arka Vikas, IIHR 2349 × Arka Saurabh, IIHR 2358 × Arka Ahuti and IIHR 2357 × Arka Ahuti were the best specific combiner in producing heterotic hybrids. IIHR 2349 × Arka Vikas and IIHR 2349 × Arka Saurabh were promising hybrids for high yield and shelf life. The crosses involved both parents with high, one parent with high and other with low and both parents with low good overall general combining ability status respectively indicated the additive, non-additive and epistatic gene action in fruit quality and yield traits inheritance.
