Abstract

The Q&U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology (QUBIC) is a novel kind of polarimeter optimized for the measurement of the B-mode polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Back-ground (CMB), which is one of the major challenges of observational cosmology. The signal is expected to be of the order of a few tens of nK, prone to instrumental systematic effects and polluted by various astrophysical foregrounds which can only be controlled through multichroic observations. Abstract

A prototype version of the Q & U bolometric interferometer for cosmology (QUBIC) underwent a campaign of testing in the laboratory at Astroparticle Physics and Cosmology laboratory in Paris (APC). The detection chain is currently made of 256 NbSi transition edge sensors (TES) cooled to 320 mK. The readout system is a 128:1 time domain multiplexing scheme based on 128 SQUIDs cooled at 1 K that are controlled and amplified by an SiGe application specific integrated circuit at 40 K. We report the performance of this readout chain and the characterization of the TES. The readout system has been functionally tested and characterized in the lab and in QUBIC. The low noise amplifier demonstrated a white noise level of 0.3 nV.Hz^-0.5. Characterizations of the QUBIC detectors and readout electronics includes the measurement of I-V curves, time constant and the noise equivalent power. The QUBIC TES bolometer array has approximately 80% detectors within operational parameters. It demonstrated a thermal decoupling compatible with a phonon noise of about 5.10^-17 W.Hz^-0.5 at 410 mK critical temperature. While still limited by microphonics from the pulse tubes and noise aliasing from readout system, the instrument noise equivalent power is about 2.10^-16 W.Hz^-0.5, enough for the demonstration of bolometric interferometry., Comment: Accepted for publication in JCAP

Abstract

The Q $\&$ U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology (QUBIC) is a novel kind of polarimeter optimized for the measurement of the B-mode polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), which is one of the major challenges of observational cosmology. The signal is expected to be of the order of a few tens of nK, prone to instrumental systematic effects and polluted by various astrophysical foregrounds which can only be controlled through multichroic observations. QUBIC is designed to address these observational issues with a novel approach that combines the advantages of interferometry in terms of control of instrumental systematic effects with those of bolometric detectors in terms of wide-band, background-limited sensitivity. The QUBIC synthesized beam has a frequency-dependent shape that results in the ability to produce maps of the CMB polarization in multiple sub-bands within the two physical bands of the instrument (150 and 220 GHz). These features make QUBIC complementary to other instruments and makes it particularly well suited to characterize and remove Galactic foreground contamination. In this article, first of a series of eight, we give an overview of the QUBIC instrument design, the main results of the calibration campaign, and present the scientific program of QUBIC including not only the measurement of primordial B-modes, but also the measurement of Galactic foregrounds. We give forecasts for typical observations and measurements: with three years of integration on the sky and assuming perfect foreground removal as well as stable atmospheric conditions from our site in Argentina, our simulations show that we can achieve a statistical sensitivity to the effective tensor-to-scalar ratio (including primordial and foreground B-modes) $\sigma(r)=0.015$., Comment: 34 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication by JCAP. Abstract

Bolometric interferometry is a novel technique that has the ability to perform spectral imaging. A bolometric interferometer observes the sky in a wide frequency band and can reconstruct sky maps in several sub-bands within the physical band in post-processing of the data. This provides a powerful spectral method to discriminate between the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and astrophysical foregrounds. In this paper, the methodology is illustrated with examples based on the Q \& U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology (QUBIC) which is a ground-based instrument designed to measure the B-mode polarization of the sky at millimeter wavelengths. We consider the specific cases of point source reconstruction and Galactic dust mapping and we characterize the point spread function as a function of frequency. We study the noise properties of spectral imaging, especially the correlations between sub-bands, using end-to-end simulations together with a fast noise simulator. We conclude showing that spectral imaging performance are nearly optimal up to five sub-bands in the case of QUBIC., Comment: 27 pages, 18 figures. Accepted by JCAP on July 6, 2021. Abstract

We present the design, manufacturing and performance of the horn-switch system developed for the technological demonstrator of QUBIC (the $Q$\&$U$ Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology). This system is constituted of 64 back-to-back dual-band (150\,GHz and 220\,GHz) corrugated feed-horns interspersed with mechanical switches used to select desired baselines during the instrument self-calibration. We manufactured the horns in aluminum platelets milled by photo-chemical etching and mechanically tightened with screws. The switches are based on steel blades that open and close the wave-guide between the back-to-back horns and are operated by miniaturized electromagnets. We also show the current development status of the feedhorn-switch system for the QUBIC full instrument, based on an array of 400 horn-switch assemblies., Comment: 30 pages, 28 figures. Abstract

Current experiments aimed at measuring the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) use cryogenic detector arrays and cold optical systems to boost the mapping speed of the sky survey. For these reasons, large volume cryogenic systems, with large optical windows, working continuously for years, are needed. Here we report on the cryogenic system of the QUBIC (Q and U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology) experiment: we describe its design, fabrication, experimental optimization and validation in the Technological Demonstrator configuration. The QUBIC cryogenic system is based on a large volume cryostat, using two pulse-tube refrigerators to cool at ~3K a large (~1 m^3) volume, heavy (~165kg) instrument, including the cryogenic polarization modulator, the corrugated feedhorns array, and the lower temperature stages; a 4He evaporator cooling at ~1K the interferometer beam combiner; a 3He evaporator cooling at ~0.3K the focal-plane detector arrays. The cryogenic system has been tested and validated for more than 6 months of continuous operation. The detector arrays have reached a stable operating temperature of 0.33K, while the polarization modulator has been operated from a ~10K base temperature. The system has been tilted to cover the boresight elevation range 20 deg -90 deg without significant temperature variations. Abstract

Inflation Gravity Waves B-Modes polarization detection is the ultimate goal of modern large angular scale cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments around the world. A big effort is undergoing with the deployment of many ground-based, balloon-borne and satellite experiments using different methods to separate this faint polarized component from the incoming radiation. One of the largely used technique is the Stokes Polarimetry that uses a rotating half-wave plate (HWP) and a linear polarizer to separate and modulate the polarization components with low residual cross-polarization. This paper describes the QUBIC Stokes Polarimeter highlighting its design features and its performances. A common systematic with these devices is the generation of large spurious signals synchronous with the rotation and proportional to the emissivity of the optical elements. A key feature of the QUBIC Stokes Polarimeter is to operate at cryogenic temperature in order to minimize this unwanted component. Moving efficiently this large optical element at low temperature constitutes a big engineering challenge in order to reduce friction power dissipation. Big attention has been given during the designing phase to minimize the differential thermal contractions between parts. The rotation is driven by a stepper motor placed outside the cryostat to avoid thermal load dissipation at cryogenic temperature. The tests and the results presented in this work show that the QUBIC polarimeter can easily achieve a precision below 0.1{\deg} in positioning simply using the stepper motor precision and the optical absolute encoder. Abstract

The Q and U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology (QUBIC) is a ground-based experiment that aims to detect B-mode polarisation anisotropies in the CMB at angular scales around the l=100 recombination peak. Systematic errors make ground-based observations of B modes at millimetre wavelengths very challenging and QUBIC mitigates these problems in a somewhat complementary way to other existing or planned experiments using the novel technique of bolometric interferometry. This technique takes advantage of the sensitivity of an imager and the systematic error control of an interferometer. A cold reflective optical combiner superimposes there-emitted beams from 400 aperture feedhorns on two focal planes. A shielding system composedof a fixed groundshield, and a forebaffle that moves with the instrument, limits the impact of local contaminants. Abstract

A prototype version of the Q & U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology (QUBIC) underwent a campaign of testing in the laboratory at Astroparticle Physics and Cosmology in Paris. We report the results of this Technological Demonstrator which successfully shows the feasibility of the principle of Bolometric Interferometry. Characterization of QUBIC includes the measurement of the synthesized beam, the measurement of interference fringes, and the measurement of polarization performance. A modulated and frequency tunable millimetre-wave source in the telescope far-field is used to simulate a point source. The QUBIC pointing is scanned across the point source to produce beam maps. Polarization modulation is measured using a rotating Half Wave Plate. The measured beam matches well to the theoretical simulations and gives QUBIC the ability to do spectro imaging. The polarization performance is excellent with less than 0.5\% cross-polarization rejection. Abstract

The Hydrogen Intensity and Real-time Analysis eXperiment (HIRAX) is a new 400-800MHz radio interferometer under development for deployment in South Africa. HIRAX will comprise 1024 six meter parabolic dishes on a compact grid and will map most of the southern sky over the course of four years. HIRAX has two primary science goals: to constrain Dark Energy and measure structure at high redshift, and to study radio transients and pulsars. HIRAX will observe unresolved sources of neutral hydrogen via their redshifted 21-cm emission line (`hydrogen intensity mapping'). The resulting maps of large-scale structure at redshifts 0.8-2.5 will be used to measure Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO). HIRAX will improve upon current BAO measurements from galaxy surveys by observing a larger cosmological volume (larger in both survey area and redshift range) and by measuring BAO at higher redshift when the expansion of the universe transitioned to Dark Energy domination. HIRAX will complement CHIME, a hydrogen intensity mapping experiment in the Northern Hemisphere, by completing the sky coverage in the same redshift range. HIRAX's location in the Southern Hemisphere also allows a variety of cross-correlation measurements with large-scale structure surveys at many wavelengths. Daily maps of a few thousand square degrees of the Southern Hemisphere, encompassing much of the Milky Way galaxy, will also open new opportunities for discovering and monitoring radio transients. The HIRAX correlator will have the ability to rapidly and eXperimentciently detect transient events. This new data will shed light on the poorly understood nature of fast radio bursts (FRBs), enable pulsar monitoring to enhance long-wavelength gravitational wave searches, and provide a rich data set for new radio transient phenomena searches. Abstract

The physical properties of galactic cirrus emission are not well characterized. BOOMERanG is a balloon-borne experiment designed to study the cosmic microwave background at high angular resolution in the millimeter range. The BOOMERanG 245 and 345GHz channels are sensitive to interstellar signals, in a spectral range intermediate between FIR and microwave frequencies. We look for physical characteristics of cirrus structures in a region at high galactic latitudes (b~-40{\deg}) where BOOMERanG performed its deepest integration, combining the BOOMERanG data with other available datasets at different wavelengths. We have detected eight emission patches in the 345 GHz map, consistent with cirrus dust in the Infrared Astronomical Satellite maps. The analysis technique we have developed allows to identify the location and the shape of cirrus clouds, and to extract the flux from observations with different instruments at different wavelengths and angular resolutions. We study the integrated flux emitted from these cirrus clouds using data from Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS), DIRBE, BOOMERanG and Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) in the frequency range 23-3000 GHz (13 mm 100 micron wavelength). We fit the measured spectral energy distributions with a combination of a grey body and a power-law spectra considering two models for the thermal emission. The temperature of the thermal dust component varies in the 7 - 20 K range and its emissivity spectral index is in the 1 - 5 range. We identified a physical relation between temperature and spectral index as had been proposed in previous works. Abstract

The Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect is the inverse Compton-scattering of cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons by hot electrons in the intervening gas throughout the universe. The effect has a distinct spectral signature that allows its separation from other signals in multifrequency CMB datasets. Using CMB anisotropies measured at three frequencies by the BOOMERanG 2003 flight we constrain SZ fluctuations in the 10 arcmin to 1 deg angular range. Propagating errors and potential systematic effects through simulations, we obtain an overall upper limit of 15.3 uK (2 sigma) for rms SZ fluctuations in a broad bin between multipoles of of 250 and 1200 at the Rayleigh-Jeans (RJ) end of the spectrum. When combined with other CMB anisotropy and SZ measurements, we find that the local universe normalization of the density perturbations is sigma-8(SZ) < 0.96 at the 95% confidence level, consistent with sigma-8 determined from primordial perturbations., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ. Abstract

We present new measurements of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect from clusters of galaxies using the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Infrared Experiment (SuZIE II). We combine these new measurements with previous cluster observations with the SuZIE instrument to form a sample of 15 clusters of galaxies. For this sample we calculate the central Comptonization, y, and the integrated SZ flux decrement, S, for each of our clusters. We find that the integrated SZ flux is a more robust observable derived from our measurements than the central Comptonization due to inadequacies in the spatial modelling of the intra-cluster gas with a standard Beta model. This is highlighted by comparing our central Comptonization results with values calculated from measurements using the BIMA and OVRO interferometers. On average, the SuZIE calculated central Comptonizations are approximately 60% higher in the cooling flow clusters than the interferometric values, compared to only approximately 12% higher in the non-cooling flow clusters. We believe this discrepancy to be in large part due to the spatial modelling of the intra-cluster gas. From our cluster sample we construct y-T and S-T scaling relations. The y-T scaling relation is inconsistent with what we would expect for self-similar clusters; however this result is questionable because of the large systematic uncertainty in the central Comptonization. The S-T scaling relation has a slope and redshift evolution consistent with what we expect for self-similar clusters with a characteristic density that scales with the mean density of the universe. Abstract

We investigate the science goals achievable with the upcoming generation of ground-based Cosmic Microwave Background polarization experiments and calculate the optimal sky coverage for such an experiment including the effects of foregrounds. We find that with current technology an E-mode measurement will be sample-limited, while a B-mode measurement will be detector-noise-limited. We conclude that a 300 sq deg survey is an optimal compromise for a two-year experiment to measure both E and B-modes, and that ground-based polarization experiments can make an important contribution to B-mode surveys. Focusing on one particular experiment, QUaD, a proposed bolometric polarimeter operating from the South Pole, we find that a ground-based experiment can make a high significance measurement of the acoustic peaks in the E-mode spectrum, and will be able to detect the gravitational lensing signal in the B-mode spectrum. Such an experiment could also directly detect the gravitational wave component of the B-mode spectrum if the amplitude of the signal is close to current upper limits. We also investigate how a ground-based experiment can improve constraints on the cosmological parameters. We estimate that by combining two years of QUaD data with the four-year WMAP data, an optimized ground-based polarization experiment can improve constraints on cosmological parameters by a factor of two. Abstract

We have made measurements of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect in six galaxy clusters at z > 0.2 using the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Infrared Experiment (SuZIE II) in three frequency bands between 150 and 350 GHz. Simultaneous multi-frequency measurements have been used to distinguish between thermal and kinematic components of the SZ effect, and to significantly reduce the effects of variations in atmospheric emission which can otherwise dominate the noise. We have set limits to the peculiar velocities of each cluster with respect to the Hubble flow, and have used the cluster sample to set a 95% confidence limit of < 1410 km/s to the bulk flow of the intermediate-redshift universe in the direction of the CMB dipole. This is the first time that SZ measurements have been used to constrain bulk flows. We show that systematic uncertainties in peculiar velocity determinations from the SZ effect are likely to be dominated by submillimeter point sources and we discuss the level of this contamination., Comment: Submitted to Astrophysical Journal. 32 pages, 13 tables, 9 figures

Abstract

We describe BOOMERANG; a balloon-borne microwave telescope designed to map the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) at a resolution of 10' from the Long Duration Balloon (LDB) platform. The millimeter-wave receiver employs new technology in bolometers, readout electronics, cold re-imaging optics, millimeter-wave filters, and cryogenics to obtain high sensitivity to CMB anisotropy. Sixteen detectors observe in 4 spectral bands centered at 90, 150, 240 and 410 GHz. The wide frequency coverage, the long duration flight, the optical design and the observing strategy provide strong rejection of systematic effects. Abstract

We present a Monte-Carlo technique to probe the cosmic Infrared background radiation (CIB) with faint source confusion in deep, wide-field 4 micron images. We report a detection of surface brightness fluctuations using an ensemble of 5000 pixels. The brightness fluctuations do not show correlated structure and appear to be dominated by galaxies. Abstract

We present a correlation between the ACME/SP94 CMB anisotropy data at 25 to 45 GHz with the IRAS/DIRBE data and the Haslam 408 MHz data. We find a marginal correlation between the dust and the Q-band CMB data but none between the CMB data and the Haslam map. While the amplitude of the correlation with the dust is larger than that expected from naive models of dust emission it does not dominate the sky emission., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

We present limits to anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) at angular scales of a few arcminutes. The observations were made at a frequency of 142 GHz using a 6-element bolometer array (the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Infrared Experiment) at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory. Two patches of sky, each approximately 36'x4' and free of known sources, were observed for a total of 6-8 hours each, resulting in approximately 80 independent 1.7' full-width half-maximum pixels. Each pixel is observed with both a dual-beam and a triple-beam chop, with a sensitivity per pixel of 90-150 uK in each chop. These data have been analyzed using maximum likelihood techniques by assuming a gaussian autocorrelation function for the distribution of CMB fluctuations on the sky. We set an upper limit of Delta T/T <= 2.1 x 10^{-5} (95% confidence) for a coherence angle to the fluctuations of 1.1. These limits are comparable to the best limits obtained from centimeter-wavelength observations on similar angular scales but have the advantage that the contribution from known point sources is negligible at these frequencies. They are the most sensitive millimeter-wavelength limits for coherence angles <= 3'. Abstract

This In this paper we briefly describe QUBIC, the Q & U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology, a novel ground-based instrument designed to measure the extremely faint polarization anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background at intermediate angular scales. In particular we will describe simulations of the optical combiner and feedhorn array used to generate synthesized beam patterns for each detector on our focal plane. A QUBIC technical demonstrator has been built and is being installed in the observing site at Alto Chorrillos, Argentina with first light expected in 2022.

Abstract

The Q & U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology (QUBIC) is a cosmology experiment that aims to measure the B-mode polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Measurements of the primordial B-mode pattern of the CMB polarization are in fact among the most exciting goals in cosmology as it would allow testing of the inflationary paradigm. Many experiments are attempting to measure the B-modes, from the ground and the stratosphere, using imaging Stokes polarimeters. The QUBIC collaboration developed an innovative concept to measure CMB polarization using bolometric interferometry. This approach mixes the high sensitivity of bolometric detectors with the accurate control of systematics due to the interferometric layout of the instrument. We present the calibration results for the Technological Demonstrator, before its commissioning in the Argentinian observing site and preparation for first light.

Abstract

The Q & U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology (QUBIC) is a cosmology experiment that aims to measure the B-mode polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Measurements of the primordial B-mode pattern of the CMB polarization are in fact among the most exciting goals in cosmology as it would allow testing of the inflationary paradigm. Many experiments are attempting to measure the B-modes, from the ground and the stratosphere, using imaging Stokes polarimeters. The QUBIC collaboration developed an innovative concept to measure CMB polarization using bolometric interferometry. This approach mixes the high sensitivity of bolometric detectors with the accurate control of systematics due to the interferometric layout of the instrument. We present the calibration results for the Technological Demonstrator, before its commissioning in the Argentinian observing site and preparation for first light.

Abstract

QUBIC (Q and U bolometric interferometer for cosmology) is an international ground-based experiment dedicated to the measurement of the polarized fluctuations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). It is based on bolometric interferometry, an original detection technique which combines the immunity to systematic effects of an interferometer with the sensitivity of low temperature incoherent detectors. QUBIC will be deployed in Argentina, at the Alto Chorrillos mountain site near San Antonio de los Cobres, in the Salta province. The QUBIC detection chain consists of 2048 NbSi transition edge sensors (TESs) cooled to 320 mK. The voltage-biased TESs are read out with time domain multiplexing based on superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) at 1 K and a novel SiGe application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) at 60 K allowing an unprecedented multiplexing (MUX) factor equal to 128 to be reached. The current QUBIC version is based on a reduced number of detectors (1/4) in order to validate the detection technique. The QUBIC experiment is currently being validated in the lab in Salta (Argentina) before going to the site for observations. This paper presents the main results of the characterization phase with a focus on the detectors and readout system.

Abstract

We report on an extensive test campaign of a prototype version of the QUBIC (Q & U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology) instrument, carried out at Astroparticle Physics and Cosmology (APC) in Paris. Exploiting the novel concept called bolometric interferometry, QUBIC is designed to measure the CMB polarization at 150 and 220 GHz from a high altitude site at Alto Chorillo, Argentina. The prototype model called QUBIC Technological Demonstrator (QUBIC-TD) operates in a single frequency band (150 GHz) and with a reduced number of baselines, but it contains all the elements of the QUBIC instrument in its final configuration. The test campaign included measurements of the synthesized beam and of the polarization performance, as well as a verification of the interference fringe pattern. A modulated, frequency-tunable millimetre-wave source was placed in the telescope far-field and was used to simulate a point source. The QUBIC-TD field of view was scanned across the source to produce beam maps. Our measurements confirm the frequency-dependent behaviour of the beam profile, which gives QUBIC the possibility to do spectral imaging. The measured polarization performance indicates a cross-polarization leakage less than 0.6%. We also successfully tested the polarization modulation system, which is provided by a rotating half wave plate. We demonstrate the full mapmaking pipeline using data from this measurement campaign, effectively giving an end-to-end checkout of the entire QUBIC system, including all hardware subsystems, their interfaces, and the software to operate the whole system and run the analysis. Our results confirm the viability of bolometric interferometry for measurements of the CMB polarization.

Abstract

Bolometric interferometry is a novel technique that has the ability to perform spectral imaging. A bolometric interferometer observes the sky in a wide frequency band and can reconstruct sky maps in several sub-bands within the physical band in post-processing of the data. This provides a powerful spectral method to discriminate between the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and astrophysical foregrounds. In this paper, the methodology is illustrated with examples based on the Q & U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology (QUBIC) which is a ground-based instrument designed to measure the B-mode polarization of the sky at millimeter wavelengths. We consider the specific cases of point source reconstruction and Galactic dust mapping and we characterize the point spread function as a function of frequency. We study the noise properties of spectral imaging, especially the correlations between sub-bands, using end-to-end simulations together with a fast noise simulator. We conclude showing that spectral imaging performance are nearly optimal up to five sub-bands in the case of QUBIC.

Abstract

A prototype version of the Q & U bolometric interferometer for cosmology (QUBIC) underwent a campaign of testing in the laboratory at Astroparticle Physics and Cosmology laboratory in Paris (APC). The detection chain is currently made of 256 NbSi transition edge sensors (TES) cooled to 320 mK. The readout system is a 128:1 time domain multiplexing scheme based on 128 SQUIDs cooled at 1 K that are controlled and amplified by a SiGe application specific integrated circuit at 40 K. We report the performance of this readout chain and the characterization of the TES. The readout system has been functionally tested and characterized in the lab and in QUBIC. The low noise amplifier demonstrated a white noise level of 0.3 nV/√Hz. Characterizations of the QUBIC detectors and readout electronics includes the measurement of I-V curves, time constant and the noise equivalent power. The QUBIC TES bolometer array has approximately 80% detectors within operational parameters. It demonstrated a thermal decoupling compatible with a phonon noise of about 5 × 10-17 W/√Hz at 410 mK critical temperature. While still limited by microphonics from the pulse tubes and noise aliasing from readout system, the instrument noise equivalent power is about 2 × 10-16 W/√Hz, enough for the demonstration of bolometric interferometry.

Abstract

Current experiments aimed at measuring the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) use cryogenic detector arrays with cold optical systems to boost their mapping speed. For this reason, large volume cryogenic systems with large optical windows, working continuously for years, are needed. The cryogenic system of the QUBIC (Q & U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology) experiment solves a combination of simultaneous requirements: very large optical throughput (1/440 cm2sr), large volume (1/41 m3) and large mass (1/4165 kg) of the cryogenic instrument. Here we describe its design, fabrication, experimental optimization and validation in the Technological Demonstrator configuration. The QUBIC cryogenic system is based on a large volume cryostat that uses two pulse-tube refrigerators to cool the instrument to 1/43 K. The instrument includes the cryogenic polarization modulator, the corrugated feedhorn array, and the lower temperature stages: a 4He evaporator cooling the interferometer beam combiner to 1/41 K and a 3He evaporator cooling the focal-plane detector arrays to 1/40.3 K. The cryogenic system has been tested and validated for more than 6 months of continuous operation. The detector arrays have reached a stable operating temperature of 0.33 K, while the polarization modulator has operated at a 1/410 K base temperature. The system has been tilted to cover the boresight elevation range 20°-90° without significant temperature variations. The instrument is now ready for deployment to the high Argentinean Andes.

Abstract

The Q and U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology (QUBIC) is a ground-based experiment that aims to detect B-mode polarization anisotropies [1] in the CMB at angular scales around the â.,"≃100 recombination peak. Systematic errors make ground-based observations of B modes at millimetre wavelengths very challenging and QUBIC mitigates these problems in a somewhat complementary way to other existing or planned experiments using the novel technique of bolometric interferometry. This technique takes advantage of the sensitivity of an imager and the systematic error control of an interferometer. A cold reflective optical combiner superimposes the re-emitted beams from 400 aperture feedhorns on two focal planes. A shielding system composed of a fixed groundshield, and a forebaffle that moves with the instrument, limits the impact of local contaminants. The modelling, design, manufacturing and preliminary measurements of the optical components are described in this paper.

Abstract

The Q $\&$ U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology (QUBIC) is a novel kind of polarimeter optimized for the measurement of the B-mode polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), which is one of the major challenges of observational cosmology. The signal is expected to be of the order of a few tens of nK, prone to instrumental systematic effects and polluted by various astrophysical foregrounds which can only be controlled through multichroic observations. QUBIC is designed to address these observational issues with a novel approach that combines the advantages of interferometry in terms of control of instrumental systematic effects with those of bolometric detectors in terms of wide-band, background-limited sensitivity. The QUBIC synthesized beam has a frequency-dependent shape that results in the ability to produce maps of the CMB polarization in multiple sub-bands within the two physical bands of the instrument (150 and 220 GHz). These features make QUBIC complementary to other instruments and makes it particularly well suited to characterize and remove Galactic foreground contamination. In this article, first of a series of eight, we give an overview of the QUBIC instrument design, the main results of the calibration campaign, and present the scientific program of QUBIC including not only the measurement of primordial B-modes, but also the measurement of Galactic foregrounds. We give forecasts for typical observations and measurements: with three years of integration on the sky and assuming perfect foreground removal as well as stable atmospheric conditions from our site in Argentina, our simulations show that we can achieve a statistical sensitivity to the effective tensor-to-scalar ratio (including primordial and foreground B-modes) $\sigma(r)=0.015$., Comment: 34 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication by JCAP. Abstract

We present a correlation between the ACME/SP94 CMB anisotropy data at 25 to 45 GHz with the IRAS/DIRBE data and the Haslam 408 MHz data. We find a marginal correlation between the dust and the Q-band CMB data but none between the CMB data and the Haslam map. While the amplitude of the correlation with the dust is larger than that expected from naive models of dust emission, it does not dominate the sky emission.

Abstract

We look at anticipated science results achievable with QUaD, a ground-based experiment to measure the polarization of the CMB from the South Pole, and describe the features that will enable it to measure this weak polarized signal. We show that QUaD can make a high resolution measurement of the polarization signals on small angular scales. This will lead to tighter constraints on the key cosmological parameters and could also put new limits on the inflationary model.
