The unfrozen water content (UWC) is a crucial parameter that affects the strength and thermal properties of rocks in relation to engineering construction and geological disasters in cold regions. In this study, three different methods were employed to test and estimate the UWC of saturated sandstones, including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), and ultrasonic methods. The NMR method enabled the direct measurement of the UWC of sandstones using the free induction decay (FID). The MIP method was used to analyze the pore structures of sandstones, with the UWC subsequently calculated based on pore ice crystallization. Therefore, the MIP test constituted an indirect measurement method. Furthermore, a correlation was established between the P-wave velocity and the UWC of these sandstones based on the mixture theory, which could be employed to estimate the UWC as an empirical method. All methods demonstrated that the UWC initially exhibited a rapid decrease from 0 °C to −5 °C and then generally became constant beyond −20 °C. However, these test methods had different characteristics. The NMR method was used to directly and accurately calculate the UWC in the laboratory. However, the cost and complexity of NMR equipment have precluded its use in the field. The UWC can be effectively estimated by the MIP test, but the estimation accuracy is influenced by the ice crystallization process and the pore size distribution. The P-wave velocity has been demonstrated to be a straightforward and practical empirical parameter and was utilized to estimate the UWC based on the mixture theory. This method may be more suitable in the field. All methods confirmed the existence of a hysteresis phenomenon in the freezing-thawing process. The average hysteresis coefficient was approximately 0.538, thus validating the Gibbs–Thomson equation. This study not only presents alternative methodologies for estimating the UWC of saturated sandstones but also contribute to our understanding of the freezing-thawing process of pore water.

Abstract Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are produced by bacterial fermentation in the colon and are thought to be protective against gastrointestinal disease. SCFAs such as acetate, propionate and butyrate are important metabolites in the maintenance of intestinal homeostasis and have been shown to be beneficial in colorectal cancer (CRC). SCFAs are responsible for maintaining a normal intestinal barrier and exhibit numerous immunomodulatory functions. In this review article, we will discuss the metabolism and mechanism of action of SCFAs and their effects on the CRC, with particular emphasis on dietary fiber treatment and the clinical research progress.

Abstract Primordial germ cells (PGCs) are vital for producing sperm and eggs and are crucial for conserving chicken germplasm and creating genetically modified chickens. However, efforts to use PGCs for preserving native chicken germplasm and genetic modification via CRISPR/Cas9 are limited. Here we show that we established 289 PGC lines from eight Chinese chicken populations with an 81.6% success rate. We regenerated Piao chickens by repropagating cryopreserved PGCs and transplanting them into recipient chickens, achieving a 12.7% efficiency rate. These regenerated chickens carried mitochondrial DNA from female donor PGC and the rumplessness mutation from both male and female donors. Additionally, we created the TYRP1 (tyrosinase-related protein 1) knockout (KO) PGC lines via CRISPR/Cas9. Transplanting KO cells into male recipients and mating them with wild-type hens produced four TYRP1 KO chickens with brown plumage due to reduced eumelanin production. Our work demonstrates efficient PGC culture, cryopreservation, regeneration, and gene editing in chickens.

Abstract The study of hydrogen concentration distribution law of hydrogen-doped methane pipeline is directly related to the safety and stability of hydrogen-doped methane pipeline network. Based on the theory of fluid dynamics, this paper established a model of hydrogen-doped methane pipeline and simulated the operation and shutdown status of hydrogen-doped methane pipeline by adopting the computational fluid dynamics method and selecting the mixture multiphase model and standard k - ε turbulence model. This paper investigates the hydrogen concentration distribution law in hydrogen-doped methane pipelines as well as the influence law of different hydrogen-doping ratios, operating flow velocities, operating pressures, shutdown time and gas usage on the hydrogen concentration distribution in gas pipeline. The results show that: under the operation condition, there is a weak uneven distribution of hydrogen in the pipeline, the hydrogen-doping ratio, flow velocity, pressure on the hydrogen volume fraction of the change in the 0.9% or less, the effect can be ignored; in the shutdown status, there is a clear stratification phenomenon, the hydrogen-doping ratio increased from 10 to 25%, the change in the volume fraction of hydrogen in the 11.2% or less, a positive correlation; with the extension of the shutdown time to 900s, the pipeline firstly appeared obvious stratification phenomenon in the branch pipe, the thickness of the gas with hydrogen volume fraction above 40% on the upper wall surface of the branch pipe increased to 0.7 mm, and after the shutdown time was extended to 10 h, obvious stratification phenomenon appeared in the main pipeline, and the volume fraction of hydrogen near the top of the main pipe of about 16.5 mm was above 30%, which was positively correlated; In the shutdown status, the shutdown time has the greatest effect on the stratification phenomenon in the pipe, followed by the hydrogen-doping ratio, and the gas usage has the least effect.

Abstract Background China has undergone a significant socioeconomic transformation over the past few decades due to the implementation of family planning policies. These societal changes have resulted in an increased susceptibility among females to developing cardiometabolic diseases (CMD). Unfortunately, studies investigating the correlation between family planning policies in China and the incidence of CMD remain scarce. Methods Data from 1,226 females, aged 30 years or older with ≥ 1 live birth, undergoing routine physical examinations between January 2018 and December 2021 were collected, and they were grouped by number of live births 1, 2, and ≥ 3. A binary logistic regression model was employed to examine the association between the number of live births with CMD. Furthermore, the subgroup analysis was performed to elucidate the impact of the implementation of family planning policies with CMD. Abstract Sulfur deposition can result in an increase in the wall thickness of high-sulfur natural gas gathering pipelines, leading to issues like unstable pipeline flow. It is crucial to reveal the aggregation of sulfur particles at key locations of high-sulfur natural gas gathering pipelines to predict the location and amount of sulfur deposition in the pipelines. In this paper, the Euler–PBM (Population balance model) coupling is used to establish a numerical simulation model of gas–solid two-phase pipe flow accompanied by sulfur particle agglomeration in the pipe bends, focusing on the influence of sulfur particle volume fraction, pipe inclination angle and inlet flow velocity on sulfur particles agglomeration behavior. The results show that the sulfur particles have a significant agglomeration effect at the bend of the collecting pipeline, and the agglomeration growth occurs to different degrees throughout the bend, and the main area of sulfur particles agglomeration is near the top wall of the pipeline, followed by other areas near the wall of the pipeline. When the inlet volume fraction of sulfur particles was increased from 0.05 to 0.25%, and the inclination angle of the pipe was increased from 30° to 90°, the distribution range of sulfur particle size after agglomeration became wider, and the maximum size of sulfur particles was 187.56 μm, and the effect of sulfur particle agglomeration was enhanced; the inlet flow rate was increased from 3.0 to 9.0 m/s, and the reduction range of sulfur particle size after agglomeration was 5.68–9.87 μm. The maximum particle size of sulfur particles also decreased, and the effect of sulfur particle agglomeration was weakened.

Abstract Background Nursing students are faced with multiple challenges and have a higher probability of suffering from anxiety. The current study aims to explore the relation between empathy and anxiety, examining the mediation and moderation effects of insomnia and self-compassion, respectively. Methods This study employed a convenient sampling method, recruiting 1,161 nursing students (female = 923, male = 238, Meanage = 18.37, SDage = 2.38) from three universities in China. These students completed the questionnaires online, including General Anxiety Disorder -7 (GAD-7), Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy-Nursing student (JSPE-NS), Youth Self-rating Insomnia Scale -8 (YSIS-8), and Self-Compassion Scale (SCS). The study employed latent variable structural equation models to analyze the relation and mechanisms between empathy and anxiety. Then, the mediated role of insomnia and the moderated role of self-compassion were examined. Results The prevalence rates of anxiety and insomnia in the current sample are 18.24% and 26.76%, respectively. Abstract Sodium is crucial for maintaining cardiovascular health, especially in relation to heart failure. The impact of baseline serum sodium concentrations on the outcomes of newly diagnosed coronary heart disease (CHD) without heart failure remains unclear. This prospective cohort study included 681 patients who were newly diagnosed with CHD. Cox proportional hazards models and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis were used to assess the relationship between serum sodium concentrations and major adverse cardiovascular events. The improvement in traditional prediction models by the addition of serum sodium concentrations was assessed using changes in the C-statistic, net reclassification improvement (NRI), and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI). During a median follow-up of 51.04 months (IQR: 40.88–53.80 months), 131 events were recorded. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards models showed that the L2 group (136–138.9 mmol/L) had the highest MACE risk. Compared to L2, the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the L1 (130–135.9 mmol/L), L3 (139–140.9 mmol/L), L4 (141–142.9 mmol/L), and L5 (143–147.0 mmol/L) groups were 0.31 (0.14–0.70, P = 0.005), 0.48 (030–0.78, P = 0.003), 0.56 (0.34–0.92, P = 0.022), and 0.37 (0.22–0.64, P

Abstract The Montreal Protocol has been successful in safeguarding the ozone layer and curbing climate change. However, accurately estimating and reducing the time-lagged emissions of ozone-depleting substances or their substitutes, such as produced but not-yet-emitted fluorocarbon banks, remains a significant challenge. Here, we use a dynamic material flow analysis model to characterize the global stocks and flows of two fluorocarbon categories, hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), from 1986 to 2060. We assess emission pathways, time-lagged emission sizes, and potential abatement measures throughout different life cycle stages while focusing on the role of banked fluorocarbons in global and regional decarbonization efforts in the post-Kigali Amendment era. Although fluorocarbon releases are expected to decline, the cumulative global warming potential (GWP)-weighted emissions of HCFCs and HFCs are significant; these will be 6.4 (±1.2) and 14.8 (±2.5) gigatons CO2-equivalent, respectively, in 2022–2060 in our business-as-usual (BAU) scenario. Scenario analysis demonstrates that implementing currently available best environmental practices in developed economies can reduce cumulative GWP-weighted emissions by up to 45% compared with the BAU scenario.

Abstract Introduction Anxiety and depression often co-occur in adolescents, with factors from family and school playing a significant role in the comorbidity. However, network analysis has not examined and clarified the detailed bridge and central symptoms of this comorbidity caused by online learning and perceived parental relationships across different COVID-19 times. Methods Over four months, 2,356 secondary school students completed the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale-7. Participants were divided into harmonious and disharmonious groups based on their answers to a question about parental conflicts. Results The results indicated that adolescents perceiving more parental conflicts showed a denser comorbidity network after four months of online learning. Significant bridge symptoms decreased from three to two across two waves in the harmonious group, while in the disharmonious group, they increased from two to three. The number of central symptoms increased from one in wave 1 to three in wave 2 for the harmonious group, while four in wave 1 decreased to two in wave 2 for the disharmonious group. Furthermore, the CLPN analysis revealed that the strongest positive cross-lagged edge intensity between symptoms was anhedonia—energy in the harmonious group, with anhedonia being the most trigger symptom. In contrast, for the disharmonious group, guilt—suicide and trouble relaxing—excessive worry were the strongest cross-lagged edge, and trouble relaxing was the most trigger symptom. Conclusion These findings may have implications for interventions designed to promote adolescent mental health in the context of online learning and parental conflicts.

Abstract Objectives The main goal of presurgical evaluation in drug‐resistant focal epilepsy is to identify a seizure onset zone (SOZ). Of the noninvasive, yet resource‐intensive tests available, ictal single‐photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) aids SOZ localization by measuring focal increases in blood flow within the SOZ via intravenous peri‐ictal radionuclide administration. Recent studies indicate that geographic and center‐specific factors impact utilization of these diagnostic procedures. Our study analyzed successful ictal SPECT acquisition (defined as peri‐ictal injection during inpatient admission) using surgery‐related data from the Pediatric Epilepsy Research Consortium (PERC) surgery database. We hypothesized that a high seizure burden, longer duration of video EEG monitoring (VEEG), and more center‐specific hours of SPECT availability would increase the likelihood of successful ictal SPECT. Methods We identified study participants (≤18 years of age) who underwent SPECT as part of their phase 1 VEEG from January 2018 to June 2022. We assessed association between ictal SPECT outcomes (success vs. failure) and variables including patient demographics, epilepsy history, and center‐specific SPECT practices. Results Phase 1 VEEG monitoring with ictal SPECT injection was planned in 297 participants and successful in 255 participants (85.86%). Abstract Background To understand the clinical characteristics and prognosis of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)-related encephalopathy in children. Methods A retrospective analysis of the data of children who were diagnosed with RSV-related encephalopathy and admitted to the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) of Beijing Children’s Hospital between November 2016 and November 2023 was performed. Results Four hundred and sixty-four children with RSV infection were treated in the PICU, and eight of these patients (1.7%) were diagnosed with RSV-related encephalopathy. The mean age of the patients was 24.89 (5.92 ∼ 36.86) months. Two patients had underlying diseases. The time from the onset of illness to impaired consciousness was 3 (1.88–3.75) days. Five patients had convulsions, and three patients had an epileptic status. The serum procalcitonin (PCT) level was 1.63 (0.24, 39.85) ng/ml for the eight patients, and the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) protein level was 232 (163 ∼ 848) g/L. Among the 8 patients, four patients underwent electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring or examination. One patient showed continuous low-voltage, nonresponsive activity, and another patient displayed persistent slow waves, the remaining two patients had negative results. One patient had a combination of acute necrotizing encephalopathy (ANE) and acute encephalopathy with biphasic seizures and late reduced diffusion (AESD). Additionally, one patient had ANE, and another had acute brain swelling (ABS). One patient died in the hospital, and the other seven patients were discharged with improvement. Routine follow-up was conducted for 4.58(0.5 ∼ 6.50) years, and all patients fully recovered. Conclusions RSV-related encephalopathy could have varying clinical manifestations, and some types, such as ANE and ABS, are dangerous and can lead to death.

Abstract By implementing a high-frequency intelligent network of sensors, this work explores continuous monitoring and alerting for dynamic changes in water quality. Life depends on water, yet pollution is a greater menace. For this reason, precautions and careful observation are necessary. Typically, the focus on conventional water quality system monitoring is too much on data collection and needs more on analysis and extraction, limiting its capacity to offer thorough solutions. Making informed decisions becomes more complicated when there are discrepancies like damaged data, loss from power outages, or transmission issues. The proposed High-Frequency Intelligent Sensing Network (HFISN) monitoring system uses cloud computing, IoT and Big data technologies for intelligent sensing. Researchers developed it to address various challenges. Researchers recommend Nephelometric Turbidity Unit (NTU) Sensor installation to enhance the system’s performance and facilitate better monitoring of sedimentation, particle issues, and water purity. This sensor makes it possible to make more informed decisions by expanding the platform’s dataset. The solution not only resolves data cleaning and analysis issues but also includes intelligent early-warning capabilities for timely alerts. Quantum Cloud (QC) technology is employed to enhance security and accessibility. Test findings confirm its robustness with extra features and a built-in turbidity sensor. Because the platform ensures data accuracy and dependability, it provides decision-makers with a solid foundation to protect water resources.

Abstract Background Data on pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) of children in China have been limited. We aimed to summarize the clinical feather, microbiological characteristics, management, and outcome of PLA in children. Method We retrospectively reviewed PLA cases from January 2008 to June 2023 at Beijing Children’s Hospital. Clinical characteristics, pathogens and management were analyzed. Results We diagnosed 57 PLA patients in our center. The median onset age was 4.5 years and the male-to-female ratio was 1.6:1. The median diagnostic time was nine days and the median length of stay was 22 days. Twenty-eight patients (49.1%) had predisposing factors, around 71.4% of the patients had malignant hematology and primary immunodeficiency disease. Abstract Background Leishmaniasis, caused by Leishmania spp. parasites, is an important zoonotic disease globally, posing severe threats to humans and animals. In the absence of effective vaccines, reliable serological diagnostic methods are critical for disease control. However, the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunochromatographic assay have limitations due to complexity, time required and/or sensitivity. Therefore, our objective was to develop an accurate, rapid and user-friendly detection method of canine leishmania antibody based on double-antigen sandwich homogeneous chemical luminescence. Methods Homogeneous chemiluminescent technology was employed, and expressed recombinant fusion proteins containing full-length K9, K39 and K26 repeat sequences were used as diagnostic antigens. To establish a dual-antigen sandwich serological assay capable of detecting various antibody types, a factorial design was used to optimize concentrations of diagnostic antigen-receptor microspheres and of biotinylated diagnostic antigens, as well as of reaction solution composition and reaction duration. To evaluate and validate this newly developed method, we collected 41 Leishmania-positive serum samples, 30 Leishmania-negative control serum samples and 78 clinical serum samples for which no diagnostic information was available. Comparative analyses were performed using parasitological testing and an indirect ELISA as reference methods, focusing on diagnostic sensitivity and specificity. Results Sodium dodecyl sulfate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis confirmed the purification of the diagnostic antigens, which exhibited clear bands without impurities. Based on results from the 41 Leishmania-positive samples and 30 Leishmania-negative samples, there was sufficient sensitivity to detect samples diluted up to 256-fold, with analytical specificity of 100%. Overall diagnostic sensitivity was 100% and diagnostic specificity was 93.3%. Diagnostic performance was highly consistent between the newly developed method and the indirect ELISA (Kappa = 0.82, P

Abstract Objective Acute acromioclavicular (AC) joint dislocation is a common orthopedic injury that can significantly impair shoulder function and reduce quality of life. Effective treatment methods are essential to restore function and alleviate pain. To investigate the short-term clinical efficacy of the minimally invasive closed-loop double endobutton fixation assisted by orthopaedic surgery robot positioning system (TiRobot) in the treatment of AC joint dislocation, and to evaluate its feasibility and safety. Methods The clinical data of 19 patients with AC joint dislocation who underwent treatment with closed-loop double Endobutton fixation assisted by TiRobot between May 2020 and December 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. Visual Analog Scale (VAS) pain scores, the Constant Murley Score (CMS), and shoulder abduction range of motion were assessed and compared preoperatively and at the last follow-up. Computed tomography (CT) parameters of the acromioclavicular joint, including acromioclavicular distance (ACD), the distance between the upper and lower Endobutton (DED), the horizontal distance between the anterior edge of the distal clavicle and the anterior edge of the acromion (DACC), the diameter of the clavicular tunnel (DCT), and coracoid tunnel diameter (DC), were compared at 2 days, and 1 month after surgery, as well as at the last follow-up, along with the evaluation of intraoperative and postoperative complications. Results The postoperative VAS, CMS, and shoulder-abduction range of motion were significantly improved compared with the preoperative (all, P0.05). Comparisons of DCT and DC revealed statistically significant differences between the last follow-up and 1 month after surgery (P0.05). There were no complications such as infection or vascular or neurological damage, no cases of rostral or clavicle fractures, loss of reduction, heterotopic ossification, shoulder stiffness, and no loosening or breaking of internal fixations. Conclusion Closed-loop double endobutton internal fixation assisted by TiRobot is an ideal method for the treatment of acute acromioclavicular (AC) joint dislocation. This method has the advantages of relatively simple operation, more accurate localization of bone tunnel during operation, less surgical trauma, and good recovery of shoulder function.

Abstract Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is the most common mesenchymal original tumor in gastrointestinal (GI) tract and is considered to have varying malignant potential. With the advancement of computer science, radiomics technology and deep learning had been applied in medical researches. It’s vital to construct a more accurate and reliable multimodal predictive model for recurrence-free survival (RFS) aiding for clinical decision-making. A total of 254 patients underwent surgery and pathologically diagnosed with GIST in The First Hospital of China Medical University from 2019 to 2022 were included in the study. Preoperative contrast enhanced computerized tomography (CE-CT) and hematoxylin/eosin (H&E) stained whole slide images (WSI) were acquired for analysis. In the present study, we constructed a sum of 11 models while the multimodal model (average C-index of 0.917 on validation set in 10-fold cross validation) performed the best on external validation cohort with an average C-index of 0.864. The multimodal model also reached statistical significance when validated in the external validation cohort (n = 42) with a p-value of 0.0088 which pertained to the recurrence-free survival (RFS) comparison between the high and low groups using the optimal threshold on the predictive score. We also explored the biological significance of radiomics and pathomics features by visualization and quantitative analysis. In the present study, we constructed a multimodal model predicting RFS of GIST which was prior over unimodal models. We also proposed hypothesis on the correlation between morphology of tumor cell and prognosis.

Abstract Objectives To explore the impact of hallux valgus (HV) on lower limb neuromuscular control strategies during the sit-to-stand (STS) movement, and to evaluate the effects of Kinesio taping (KT) intervention on these control strategies in HV patients. Methods We included 14 young healthy controls (HY), 13 patients in the HV group (HV), and 11 patients in the HV group (HVI) who underwent a Kinesio taping (KT) intervention during sit-to-stand (STS) motions. We extracted muscle and kinematic synergies from EMG and motion capture data using non-negative matrix factorization (NNMF). In addition, we calculated the center of pressure (COP) and ground reaction forces (GRF) to assess balance performance. Results There were no significant differences in the numbers of muscle and kinematic synergies between groups. In the HV group, knee flexors and ankle plantar flexors were abnormally activated, and muscle synergy D was differentiated. Muscle synergy D was not differentiated in the HVI group. Conclusion Abnormal activation of knee flexors and plantar flexors led to the differentiation of module D in HV patients, which can be used as an indicator of the progress of HV rehabilitation. KT intervention improved motor control mechanisms in HV patients.

Abstract Soil salinization poses a serious threat to crop growth. The selection of appropriate soil modifiers and water-soluble fertilizers for saline soils represents a crucial method for enhancing crop yields. The modifiers and medium-element water-soluble fertilizers were prepared using hydrochar derived from rice straw. Two distinct experiments were designed to study the effect of modifiers and water-soluble fertilizers on saline soils. The first experiment, designated as the “Soil Cultivation Experiment” , sought to investigate the impact of various modifiers on soil quality. The second experiment, designated as the “Method of Field Micro-Area Experiment”, aimed to assess the influence of water-soluble fertilizers on saline soils. The results showed that the application of modifiers and water-soluble fertilizers significantly enhanced comprehensive soil physical and chemical properties, crop growth, soil enzyme activity, and other key indicators in saline and alkaline soils. The optimal dosage of the modifier was 20 g/kg, which reduced the pH value from 8.62 to 8.21 and the decreased alkalinity by 8.26%. Furthermore, their application effectively boosted nutrient levels, including organic matter, and increased soil enzyme activity. The biomass of alfalfa showed enhancements of 63.01% and 20.87% and the biomass of leymus chinensis increased by 29.39% and 9.02% for the two batches, respectively. Notably, the application of water-soluble fertilizer yielded achieved superior results. This study also provided a theoretical basis for their future application in soda saline–alkali soil.

Abstract A method based on Gabor spectral mode transmissibility functions (GSMTFs) is proposed to detect local damage in a cantilevered structure under nonstationary ambient excitations. Gabor transformation and singular value decomposition are used to reduce the influences of other vibration modes on Gabor spectral mode transmissibility functions and process nonstationary structural responses, respectively. A new state characteristic based on the fundamental structure frequency is formulated on the basis of the GSMTFs, eventually leading to the development of a new damage indicator. The probability density functions of the damage indicator for healthy and damaged states can be estimated from the measured data, and the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve derived from these probability distributions and the corresponding area under the ROC curve (AUC) are used to determine the damage location. A six-degree-of-freedom system and a typical transmission tower are numerically studied, and the results show that the proposed method can estimate the structural damage location under nonstationary random loads. The proposed method is further validated with a planar frame in the laboratory, which exhibits multiple damage elements via random force hammer excitations. The results show that the AUC values computed for certain parts of the structure containing the damaged elements are greater than those for other parts of the structure, indicating the effectiveness of the proposed method. Moreover, the proposed method is compared with the dot product difference (DPD) index, and the results from the laboratory planar frame demonstrate that the proposed method can better identify damage.

Abstract Erectile dysfunction (ED) is related to nutritional and inflammatory factors. The hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte, and platelet score (HALP), a new index reflecting the nutritional and inflammatory status, has been associated with a higher risk of diabetic retinopathy, particularly at lower values (≤ 42.9). However, studies focusing on the relationship between HALP and ED risk are scarce. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the association between HALP and ED. Data were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 2001 and 2004. Based on self-reported data, participants were classified into either the ED group or the non-ED group. Next, the HALP score was categorized into four quartiles (Q1–4). Weighted multivariate regression analysis was performed to assess the relationship between categorical HALP and ED risk. Additionally, restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis was conducted to examine the association between continuous HALP scores and ED risk. Furthermore, subgroup analyses were conducted to examine the association between categorical HALP and the risk of ED based on age, as well as the status of hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Finally, a mediation analysis was carried out to investigate the mediating effect of HALP and related parameters on the association between urinary cobalt levels and ED. Initially, the data of 21,161 participants were collected. After implementing the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 3406 participants were included in the final analyses. Weighted multivariate regression analysis demonstrated that the Q4 HALP group was associated with a lower risk of ED (OR 0.96, 95% confidence intervals 0.92–1.00, P = 0.037). Meanwhile, RCS analysis showed that HALP was nonlinearly associated with the risk of ED. In addition, subgroup analyses demonstrated that participants in the Q3/4 HALP group had a significantly lower ED risk than those in the Q1 group among patients aged ≥ 50 years, as well as those with hypertension and diabetes. Lastly, mediation analysis revealed that HALP and its associated parameters had a marginal average causal mediation effect on the relationship between urinary cobalt levels and ED risk (P > 0.05). In US adults, high HALP scores were correlated with a lower risk of ED. The relationship was more pronounced in participants aged ≥ 50 years with hypertension and diabetes. Furthermore, HALP and its parameters may not mediate the association between urinary cobalt levels and ED risk.

Abstract Objective Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is associated with antithrombotic therapy in terms of postoperative adverse events; however, it is still unknown whether the early use of such drugs after CABG is safe and effective. In this study, we aim to evaluate the relationship between different postoperative antithrombotic strategies and in-hospital adverse events in patients undergoing isolated coronary artery bypass grafting surgery. Methods This was a single-center, retrospective cohort analysis of patients undergoing isolated CABG due to coronary artery disease (CAD) between 2001 and 2012. Data were extracted from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care III database. The patients involved were divided into the ASA (aspirin 81 mg per day only) or DAPT (aspirin plus clopidogrel 75 mg per day) group according to the antiplatelet strategy. Patients were also stratified into subgroups based on the type of anticoagulation. The in-hospital risk of bleeding and adverse events was investigated and compared between groups. Propensity score matching (PSM) was performed to reduce the potential effects of a selection bias. Results A total of 3274 patients were included in this study, with 2358 in the ASA group and 889 in the DAPT group. Following the PSM, no significant difference was seen in the risk of major bleeding between the two groups according to the PLATO, TIMI or GUSTO criteria. There was no difference in the postoperative mortality. In subgroup analysis, patients given anticoagulant therapy had an increased incidence of bleeding-related events. Multivariable analysis revealed that postoperative anticoagulant therapy and the early use of heparin, but not DAPT, were independent predictors of bleeding-related events. Conclusions Postoperative DAPT was not associated with an increased occurrence of bleeding-related events in patients undergoing isolated CABG and appears to be a safe antiplatelet therapy. The addition of anticoagulants to antiplatelet therapy increased the risk of bleeding and should be considered cautiously in clinical practice.

On September 5, 2022, the Luding M6.8 earthquake occurred in the Moxi-Shimian segment of the Xianshuihe fault, coinciding with the historical ruptured zone of the 1786 Moxi earthquake. Its seismogenic environment provides a foundation for comprehending the mechanism of the earthquake and its future hazard. In the Moxi-Shimian segment, we establish a series of near-field Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) stations to enhance the spatial resolution of observational data for the inversion of the interseismic kinematic parameters. In this study, with an elastic screw dislocation model constrained by GNSS observations, the slip rate of the Moxi-Shimian segment is estimated to be 10.9 ± 1.0 mm/yr, while the locking depth is 15.7 ± 6.2 km. Additionally, we utilize a block-dislocation model to invert the interseismic fault coupling along the Kangding-Moxi-Shimian segment. The result indicates a gradual deepening of the locking depth along the section from Kangding to Shimian. The coseismic rupture of the 2022 event occurred within the high coupling regions in the Kangding-Moxi-Shimian segment, which indicates that the rupture kinematics in this event might be controlled by the interseismic deformation. The seismic moment accumulated within the ruptured zone of the Luding earthquake since 1786 ranges in [1.42–3.40] × 1019 N·m, which is significantly greater than the seismic moment released during the 2022 event. As a result, we infer that the Luding earthquake released only a portion of the accumulated energy within the original rupture zone since 1786, indicating that the 2022 event has not caused a complete rupture in the Moxi-Shimian segment. Consequently, there remains a substantial seismic hazard in this area.

To date, the exploration of multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) has rarely ventured into the realm of hexagonal close-packed (HCP) structures. In this research, we embarked on a pioneering systematic comparison between a single-phase Ti-Zr-Hf HCP-MPEA and Ti regarding their dislocation activities and mesoscale deformation homogeneity. Through large-area high-resolution quasi-in-situ slip trace analysis and crystal plasticity finite element modeling, we identified HCP-MPEA’s significantly enhanced pyramidal slip activities—resulted from minimized disparities among different deformation modes—notably improve the material’s intragranular deformation homogeneity. Alongside MPEA’s intrinsically high slip resistance, it renders HCP-MPEA an outstanding strength-toughness combination relative to its conventional HCP counterparts.

This paper addressed the challenging problem of distributed optimization for nonlinear singular perturbation multi-agent systems. The main focus lies in steering the system outputs toward the optimal points of a globally objective function, which was formed by the combination of several local functions. To achieve this objective, the singular perturbation multi-agent system was initially decomposed into fast and slow subsystems. Compared to traditional methods, robustness in reference-tracking signals was ensured through the design of fast-slow sliding mode controllers. Additionally, our method ensured robustness against errors between reference signals and optimal values by employing a distributed optimizer to generate precise reference signals. Furthermore, the stability of the entire closed-loop system was rigorously guaranteed through the application of the small-gain theorem. To demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approach, a numerical example was presented, providing empirical validation of its effectiveness in practical scenarios.

The first pandemic wave of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) induced a considerable increase in several antivirals and antibiotics in surface water. The common symptoms of COVID-19 are viral and bacterial infections, while comorbidities (e.g., hypertension and diabetes) and mental shock (e.g., insomnia and anxiety) are nonnegligible. Nevertheless, little is known about the long-term impacts of comorbidities and mental shock on organic micropollutants (OMPs) in surface waters. Herein, we monitored 114 OMPs in surface water and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Wuhan, China, between 2019 and 2021. The pandemic-induced OMP pollution in surface water was confirmed by significant increases in 26 OMP concentrations. Significant increases in four antihypertensives and one diabetic drug suggest that the treatment of comorbidities may induce OMP pollution. Notably, cotinine (a metabolite of nicotine) increased 155 times to 187 ng·L−1, which might be associated with increased smoking. Additionally, the increases in zolpidem and sulpiride might be the result of worsened insomnia and depression. Hence, it is reasonable to note that mental-health protecting drugs/behavior also contributed to OMP pollution. Among the observed OMPs, telmisartan, lopinavir, and ritonavir were associated with significantly higher ecological risks because of their limited WWTP-removal rate and high ecotoxicity. This study provides new insights into the effects of comorbidities and mental shock on OMPs in surface water during a pandemic and highlights the need to monitor the fate of related pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment and to improve their removal efficiencies in WWTPs.

Abstract Introduction The safety and efficacy of CRS + HIPEC combined with urinary tract resection and reconstruction are controversial. This study aims to summarize the clinicopathological features and to evaluate the safety and survival prognosis of CRS + HIPEC combined with urinary tract resection and reconstruction. Methods The patients who underwent urinary tract resection and reconstruction as part of CRS surgery were retrospectively selected from our disease-specific database for analysis. The clinicopathological characteristics, treatment-related variables, perioperative adverse events (AEs), and survival outcomes were studied using a descriptive approach and the K-M analysis with log-rank comparison. Results Forty-nine patients were enrolled. Perioperative serious AEs (SAEs) were observed in 11 patients (22.4%), with urinary SAEs occurring in 3 patients (6.1%). Additionally, there were 23 cases (46.8%) involving urinary adverse events (UAEs). The median overall survival (OS) in the entire cohort was 59.2 (95%CI: 42.1–76.4) months. The median OS of the UAE group and No-UAE group were 59.2 months (95%CI not reached), and 50.5 (95%CI: 11.5 to 89.6) months, respectively, with no significant difference (P = 0.475). Furthermore, there were no significant differences in OS based on the grade of UAEs or the number of UAEs (P = 0.562 and P = 0.622, respectively). Conclusion The combination of CRS + HIPEC with urinary tract resection and reconstruction is associated with a high incidence of Grade I-II UAEs, which do not have an impact on OS. The safety profile of this combined technique is acceptable. However, this is a retrospective single-center single-arm analysis, with limitations of generalizability and potential selection bias. The findings need high-level validation.

Abstract As the complexity of power systems increases, accurate load forecasting becomes crucial. This paper proposes a method for short-term electrical load forecasting that integrates fuzzy rough set (FRS) theory and multi-kernel extreme learning machine (MKELM) to improve both the accuracy and reliability of load predictions. First, we introduce the FRS theory for pre-selecting features. Next, we use correlation analysis (CA) to get rid of redundant features and choose the most important ones as prediction targets. Second, we introduce a novel prediction model based on the multi-kernel extreme learning machine (MKELM), utilizing an enhanced differential evolution algorithm (DEA) to optimize the kernel function’s parameters and the model’s weights. This approach allows for effective adaptation to various feature subsets. Experimental results on actual power load data demonstrate that our approach achieves high accuracy and reliability in short-term load forecasting. Moreover, comparative evaluations reveal that the proposed method outperforms alternative prediction models on key metrics. ANOVA and multiple comparisons further validate the statistical significance and superiority of the proposed method.

Abstract Background EEG reactivity is a predictor for neurological outcome in comatose patients after cardiac arrest (CA); however, its application is limited by variability in stimulus types and visual assessment. We aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of the quantitative analysis of EEG reactivity induced by standardized electrical stimulation and for early prognostication in this population. Methods This prospective observational study recruited post-CA comatose patients in Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University (Beijing, China) between January 2016 and June 2023. EEG reactivity to electrical or traditional pain stimulation was randomly performed via visual and quantitative analysis. Neurological outcome within 6 months was dichotomized as good (Cerebral Performance Categories, CPC 1–2) or poor (CPC 3–5). Results Fifty-eight post-CA comatose patients were admitted, and 52 patients were included in the final analysis, of which 19 (36.5%) had good outcomes. EEG reactivity induced with the electrical stimulation had superior performance to the traditional pain stimulation for good outcome prediction (quantitative analysis: AUC 0.932 vs. 0.849, p = 0.048). When using the electrical stimulation, the AUC of EEG reactivity to predict good outcome by visual analysis was 0.838, increasing to 0.932 by quantitative analysis (p = 0.039). Comparing to the traditional pain stimulation by visual analysis, the AUC of EEG reactivity for good prognostication by the electrical stimulation with quantitative analysis was significantly improved (0.932 vs. 0.770, p = 0.004). Conclusions EEG reactivity induced by the standardized electrical stimulation in combination with quantitative analysis is a promising formula for post-CA comatose patients, with increased predictive accuracy.

Abstract Background Bergeyella porcorum is a newly identified bacterium that has an ambiguous relationship with pneumonia in pigs. However, few studies have adequately characterized this species. Results In this study, we analyzed the morphological, physiological, and genomic characteristics of the newly identified B. porcorum sp. nov. strain QD2021 isolated from pigs. The complete genome sequence of the B. porcorum QD2021 strain consists of a single circular chromosome (2,271,736 bp, 38.51% G + C content), which encodes 2,578 genes. One plasmid with a size of 70,040 bp was detected. A total of 121 scattered repeat sequences, 319 tandem repeat sequences, 4 genomic islands, 5 prophages, 3 CRISPR sequences, and 51 ncRNAs were predicted. The coding genes of the B. porcorum genome were successfully annotated across eight databases (NR, GO, KEGG, COG, TCDB, Pfam, Swiss-Prot and CAZy) and four pathogenicity-related databases (PHI, CARD, VFDB and ARDB). In addition, a comparative genome analysis was performed to explore the evolutionary relationships of B. porcorum QD2021. Conclusions To our knowledge, this is the first study to provide fundamental phenotypic and whole-genome sequences for B. porcorum. Our results extensively expand the current knowledge and could serve as a valuable genomic resource for future research on B. porcorum.

Weaning is a critical transitional point in the life cycle of piglets. Early weaning can lead to post-weaning syndrome, destroy the intestinal barrier function and microbiota homeostasis, cause diarrhea and threaten the health of piglets. The nutritional components of milk and solid foods consumed by newborn animals can affect the diversity and structure of their intestinal microbiota, and regulate post-weaning diarrhea in piglets. Therefore, this paper reviews the effects and mechanisms of different nutrients, including protein, dietary fiber, dietary fatty acids and dietary electrolyte balance, on diarrhea and health of piglets by regulating intestinal function. Protein is an essential nutrient for the growth of piglets; however, excessive intake will cause many harmful effects, such as allergic reactions, intestinal barrier dysfunction and pathogenic growth, eventually aggravating piglet diarrhea. Dietary fiber is a nutrient that alleviates post-weaning diarrhea in piglets, which is related to its promotion of intestinal epithelial integrity, microbial homeostasis and the production of short-chain fatty acids. In addition, dietary fatty acids and dietary electrolyte balance can also facilitate the growth, function and health of piglets by regulating intestinal epithelial function, immune system and microbiota. Thus, a targeted control of dietary components to promote the establishment of a healthy bacterial community is a significant method for preventing nutritional diarrhea in weaned piglets.

Objective Jining Grey goat is a local Chinese goat breed that is well known for its high fertility and excellent meat quality but shows low meat production performance. Numerous studies have focused on revealing the genetic mechanism of its high fertility, but its highlighting meat quality and muscle growth mechanism still need to be studied. Methods In this research, an integrative analysis of the genomics and transcriptomics of Jining Grey goats compared with Boer goats was performed to identify candidate genes and pathways related to the mechanisms of meat quality and muscle development. Results Our results overlap among five genes (ABHD2, FN1, PGM2L1, PRKAG3, RAVER2) and detected a set of candidate genes associated with fatty acid metabolism (PRKAG3, HADHB, FASN, ACADM), amino acid metabolism (KMT2C, PLOD3, NSD2, SETDB1, STT3B, MAN1A2, BCKDHB, NAT8L, P4HA3) and muscle development (MSTN, PPARGC1A, ANKRD2). Several pathways have also been detected, such as the FoxO signaling pathway and Apelin signaling pathway that play roles in lipid metabolism, lysine degradation, N-glycan biosynthesis, valine, leucine and isoleucine degradation that involving with amino acid metabolism. Conclusion The comparative genomic and transcriptomic analysis of Jining Grey goat and Boer goat revealed the mechanisms underlying the meat quality and meat productive performance of goats. These results provide valuable information for future breeding of goats.

Magnetic powder is regarded as an effective and economical tracer for estimating soil erosion. However, the principle and application for using magnetic powder to estimate soil erosion are still not fully developed. In this study, magnetic powders with mean diameters of both 30 and 1 μm were mixed into three soils at different mass proportion. The relationship between magnetic susceptibility and the mass proportion of the introduced magnetic powder in the tagged soil, and the binding ability of magnetic powder to soil particles after both dry and wet sieving were investigated. The accuracy of tracking soil loss by using magnetic powder as a tracer was assessed. The results showed that there was a significant linear relationship between the magnetic susceptibility and the mass proportion of the introduced magnetic powder in the tagged soil. The relationship between the amount of soil captured by a magnet and the mass proportion of magnetic powder in the tagged soil indicated that soils were readily magnetized by magnetic powder, especially fine fractions. The magnetic susceptibility of magnetic powder in different sizes of soil aggregates was variable. A majority of magnetic powder of both 30 and 1 μm diameters was strongly bound with fine particles

The disposal of agricultural waste ash is a great ecological challenge. This study analyzed the basic properties of corn straw ash and soybean straw ash, encompassing the identification of key oxides, the assessment of particle size distribution, and the performance of thermogravimetric analysis. This study also evaluated the potential of corn straw ash and soybean straw ash to replace cement in mortar and concrete through laboratory tests. The findings indicated that the strength activity index of corn straw ash was higher than soybean straw ash. Furthermore, when these ashes were used as cement replacements, the compressive strength of concrete decreased. Notably, concrete containing corn straw ash exhibited greater strength than concrete with the same substitution amount of soybean straw ash. Specifically, at a 5% substitution level, the compressive strengths of corn straw ash concrete and soybean straw ash concrete were 31.5 and 30.5 MPa, respectively. Additionally, soybean straw ash concrete demonstrated superior resistance to water penetration compared to corn straw ash concrete. Both corn straw ash and soybean straw ash exhibited the potential to enhance the early crack resistance of concrete.

In order to achieve rapid bridge construction, on-site wet joint joining techniques for prefabricated bridge decks are commonly used. The primary method involves mainly lap welding, but this form poses some drawbacks such as difficult lap jointing of two steel bars and a hefty welding workload. To address these issues, this study conducts model experiments on the unwelded structure of loop joints. We compare and analyze the displacement, crack distribution, crack development process, and strain variability of loop joints across three different overlap lengths, along with one type of straight bar lap-welded wet joints. It is observed that, despite the comparable ultimate tensile capacity of loop joints with the main rib to that of the welded wet joint with the main rib, the failure mode varies, and the crack direction changes with the overlap length. From a structural stress perspective, if the U-bar of the loop joint meets a specific overlap length, the wet joint adequately fulfills stress requirements and can be applied in practical engineering.

Abstract Background Accumulating neuroimaging evidence indicates that patients with cervical dystonia (CD) have changes in the cortico-subcortical white matter (WM) bundle. However, whether these patients’ WM structural networks undergo reorganization remains largely unclear. We aimed to investigate topological changes in large-scale WM structural networks in patients with CD compared to healthy controls (HCs), and explore the network changes associated with clinical manifestations. Methods Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) was conducted in 30 patients with CD and 30 HCs, and WM network construction was based on the BNA-246 atlas and deterministic tractography. Based on the graph theoretical analysis, global and local topological properties were calculated and compared between patients with CD and HCs. Then, the AAL-90 atlas was used for the reproducibility analyses. In addition, the relationship between abnormal topological properties and clinical characteristics was analyzed. Results Compared with HCs, patients with CD showed changes in network segregation and resilience, characterized by increased local efficiency and assortativity, respectively. In addition, a significant decrease of network strength was also found in patients with CD relative to HCs. Validation analyses using the AAL-90 atlas similarly showed increased assortativity and network strength in patients with CD. No significant correlations were found between altered network properties and clinical characteristics in patients with CD. Conclusion Our findings show that reorganization of the large-scale WM structural network exists in patients with CD. However, this reorganization is attributed to dystonia-specific abnormalities or hyperkinetic movements that need further identification.

Abstract Corneal neovascularization (CNV) is one of the common blinding factors worldwide, leading to reduced vision or even blindness. However, current treatments such as surgical intervention and anti-VEGF agent therapy still have some shortcomings or evoke some adverse effects. Recently, SU6668, an inhibitor targeting angiogenic tyrosine kinases, has demonstrated growth inhibition of neovascularization. But the hydrophobicity and low ocular bioavailability limit its application in cornea. Hereby, we proposed the preparation of SU6668 pure nanoparticles (NanoSU6668; size ~135 nm) using a super-stable pure-nanomedicine formulation technology (SPFT), which possessed uniform particle size and excellent aqueous dispersion at 1 mg/mL. Furthermore, mesenchymal stem cell membrane vesicle (MSCm) was coated on the surface of NanoSU6668, and then conjugated with TAT cell penetrating peptide, preparing multifunctional TAT-MSCm@NanoSU6668 (T-MNS). The T-MNS at a concentration of 200 µg/mL was treated for CNV via eye drops, and accumulated in blood vessels with a high targeting performance, resulting in elimination of blood vessels and recovery of cornea transparency after 4 days of treatment. Meanwhile, drug safety test confirmed that T-MNS did not cause any damage to cornea, retina and other eye tissues. In conclusion, the T-MNS eye drop had the potential to treat CNV effectively and safely in a low dosing frequency, which broke new ground for CNV theranostics.

Abstract Background The thalamus has a central role in the pathophysiology of idiopathic cervical dystonia (iCD); however, the nature of alterations occurring within this structure remain largely elusive. Using a structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) approach, we examined whether abnormalities differ across thalamic subregions/nuclei in patients with iCD. Methods Structural MRI data were collected from 37 patients with iCD and 37 healthy controls (HCs). Automatic parcellation of 25 thalamic nuclei in each hemisphere was performed based on the FreeSurfer program. Differences in thalamic nuclei volumes between groups and their relationships with clinical information were analysed in patients with iCD. Results Compared to HCs, a significant reduction in thalamic nuclei volume primarily in central medial, centromedian, lateral geniculate, medial geniculate, medial ventral, paracentral, parafascicular, paratenial, and ventromedial nuclei was found in patients with iCD (P

Abstract Background Unreduced gamete formation during meiosis plays a critical role in natural polyploidization. However, the unreduced gamete formation mechanisms in Triticum turgidum–Aegilops umbellulata triploid F1 hybrid crosses and the chromsome numbers and compostions in T. turgidum–Ae. umbellulata F2 still not known. Results In this study, 11 T.turgidum–Ae. umbellulata triploid F1 hybrid crosses were produced by distant hybridization. All of the triploid F1 hybrids had 21 chromosomes and two basic pathways of meiotic restitution, namely first-division restitution (FDR) and single-division meiosis (SDM). Only FDR was found in six of the 11 crosses, while both FDR and SDM occurred in the remaining five crosses. The chromosome numbers in the 127 selfed F2 seeds from the triploid F1 hybrid plants of 10 crosses (no F2 seeds for STU 16) varied from 35 to 43, and the proportions of euploid and aneuploid F2 plants were 49.61% and 50.39%, respectively. In the aneuploid F2 plants, the frequency of chromosome loss/gain varied among genomes. The chromosome loss of the U genome was the highest (26.77%) among the three genomes, followed by that of the B (22.83%) and A (11.81%) genomes, and the chromosome gain for the A, B, and U genomes was 3.94%, 3.94%, and 1.57%, respectively. Of the 21 chromosomes, 7U (16.54%), 5 A (3.94%), and 1B (9.45%) had the highest loss frequency among the U, A, and B genomes. In addition to chromosome loss, seven chromosomes, namely 1 A, 3 A, 5 A, 6 A, 1B, 1U, and 6U, were gained in the aneuploids. Conclusion In the aneuploid F2 plants, the frequency of chromosome loss/gain varied among genomes, chromsomes, and crosses. In addition to variations in chromosome numbers, three types of chromosome translocations including 3UL·2AS, 6UL·1AL, and 4US·6AL were identified in the F2 plants. Furthermore, polymorphic fluorescence in situ hybridization karyotypes for all the U chromosomes were also identified in the F2 plants when compared with the Ae. umbellulata parents. These results provide useful information for our understanding the naturally occurred T. turgidum–Ae. umbellulata amphidiploids.

Abstract Molybdenum and its alloys are known for their superior strength among body-centered cubic materials. However, their widespread application is hindered by a significant decrease in ductility at lower temperatures. In this study, we demonstrate the achievement of exceptional ductility in a Mo alloy containing rare-earth La2O3 nanoparticles through rotary-swaging, a rarity in Mo-based materials. Our analysis reveals that the large ductility originates from substantial variations in the electronic density of states, a characteristic intrinsic to rare-earth elements. This characteristic can accelerate the generation of oxygen vacancies, facilitating the amorphization of the oxide-matrix interface. This process promotes vacancy absorption and modification of dislocation configurations. Furthermore, by inducing irregular shapes in the La2O3 nanoparticles through rotary-swaging, incoming dislocations interact with them, creating multiple dislocation sources near the interface. These dislocation sources act as potent initiators at even reduced temperatures, fostering diverse dislocation types and intricate networks, ultimately enhancing dislocation plasticity.

Abstract Background Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is a natural focal disease transmitted mainly by tick bites, and the causative agent is SFTS virus (SFTSV). SFTS can rapidly progress to severe disease, with multiple-organ failure (MOF) manifestations such as shock, respiratory failure, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and death, but cases of SFTS patients with central nervous system (CNS) symptoms onset and marked persistent involuntary shaking of the perioral area and limbs have rarely been reported. Case presentation A 69-year-old woman with fever and persistent involuntary shaking of the perioral area and limbs was diagnosed with SFTS with CNS symptom onset after metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and peripheral blood identified SFTSV. The patient developed a cytokine storm and MOF during the course of the disease, and after aggressive antiviral, glucocorticoid, and gamma globulin treatments, her clinical symptoms improved, her laboratory indices returned to normal, and she had a good prognosis. Conclusion This case gives us great insight that when patients with CNS symptoms similar to those of viral encephalitis combined with thrombocytopenia and leukopenia are encountered in the clinic, it is necessary to consider the possibility of SFTS involving the CNS. Testing for SFTSV nucleic acid in CSF and blood (mNGS or polymerase chain reaction (PCR)) should be carried out, especially in critically ill patients, and treatment should be given accordingly.

Abstract Background Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) causes significant morbidity in children worldwide; however, the disease burden of children hospitalized with viral gastroenteritis in China has been rarely described. Through this study, we analyzed the data of hospitalized children with viral gastroenteritis to explore the changes in the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of viral gastroenteritis in the mainland of China. Methods Data were extracted from Futang Children's Medical Development Research Center (FRCPD), between 2016 and 2020, across 27 hospitals in 7 regions. The demographics, geographic distribution, pathogenic examination results, complications, hospital admission date, length of hospital stays, hospitalization charges and outcomes were collected and analyzed. Results Viral etiological agents included rotavirus (RV), adenovirus (ADV), norovirus (NV) and coxsackievirus (CV) that were detected in 25,274 (89.6%), 1,047 (3.7%), 441 (1.5%) and 83 (0.3%) cases. There was a higher prevalence of RV and NV infection among children younger than 3 years of age. RV and NV had the highest detection rates in winter, while ADV in summer. Children with viral gastroenteritis were often accompanied by other diseases, such as myocardial diseases (10.98–31.04%), upper respiratory tract diseases (1.20–20.15%), and seizures (2.41–14.51%). Among those cases, the co-infection rate with other pathogens was 6.28%, with Mycoplasma pneumoniae (M. pneumoniae), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and influenza virus (FLU) being the most common pathogens. The median length of stay was 5 days, and the median cost of hospitalization corresponded to587 US dollars. Conclusions This finding suggests that viral gastroenteritis, especially those caused by RV, is a prevalent illness among younger children. Co-infections and the presence of other diseases are common. The seasonality and regional variation of viral etiological agents highlight the need for targeted prevention and control measures. Although viral gastroenteritis rarely leads to death, it also results in a significant economic burden on healthcare systems.

To investigate the quality characteristics of different varieties of blueberry, the quality differences on appearance, physicochemical properties, and sugar and acid composition were analyzed. At the same time, correlation analysis was employed to analyze the correlation of different indexes and principal component analysis was employed to evaluate the quality characteristics of 9 varieties of blueberry. The results showed that different varieties of blueberry exhibited rich diversity in appearance, physicochemical properties, and sugar and acid composition. There was a high correlation between multiple indicators such as glucose and fructose (r=0.93), FRAP and DPPH (r=0.755). PCA results indicated that citric acid, pH, b*, total phenol, DPPH, flavonoid and juice yield were key indicators for evaluating the quality of blueberry, and the quality characteristics of 'Canlan', 'Laigexi' and 'Shuangfeng' were excellent fruit shape index (>0.73), good solid to acid ratio of 6.12~9.57 and suitable for fresh consumption. The quality characteristics of 'Baerdewen', 'Duke' and 'Weisan' included the high in sugar, acid and antioxidant capacity, suitable for juice and wine and other products development. The flavonoid contents of 'Weisan' and 'Duke' were 1.95 and 1.62 mg/g, and the total phenol contents were 1.34 and 1.38 mg/g, respectively. The quality characteristics of 'Weisan' and 'Duke' were high content of total phenol and flavonoid, suitable for functional product development. The results above will serve an important reference to screen blueberry varieties for different purposes.

Defects, boundaries, textures, tensile properties, fractographies, sub-grains, nano-oxide particles, and deformation twins in selective laser melted 316L stainless steel (SLM316LSS) were systematically characterized as functions of laser energy density. The defects, boundaries, textures of the as-built SLM316LSS were shown to depend largely on the applied laser power. The porosity of the SLM316LSS significantly decreased with the increase laser power from 70 to 140 W (corresponding to the laser energy density from 116.7 to 233.3 J/mm3), while exhibiting a slight increase in the laser power range of 140–280 W (the laser energy density of 233.3–466.7 J/mm3). Additionally, the SLM316LSS specimen at a laser power of 140 W reached the hardness of ∼252 HV, the yield strength of ∼605 MPa and the ultimate tensile strength of ∼710 MPa, along with the elongation to fracture of ∼32.5%, respectively, due to the lowest defect concentration and the presence of twin boundaries and textures, combined with SiO2 nano-oxide particles and deformation twinning. However, the crack appeared in the SLM316LSS within the laser power range from 210 to 280 W (the laser energy density from 350.0 to 466.7 J/mm3), and the mean crystallite size was more than 50 μm, which insignificantly affected the mechanical properties of the steel compared with a laser power of 140 W.

The effects of solid solution temperature, aging temperature and aging cooling rate on the microstructure evolution of forged Ti-22.5Al-24.7Nb (at. %) alloy were investigated. With the increasing solid solution temperature, the number of equiaxed microstructure first increases and then decreases, reaching the maximum at 900 °C. Lamellar microstructure solubilizes in the matrix or gradually becomes coarser and shorter, and transforms into equiaxed microstructure. When the solution temperature is 1000 °C, equiaxed α2 phase gradually changes to be lath-shaped and concave. During the aging process, some α2 phase transforms into O phase, and the aging temperature affects the shape of equiaxed microstructure and the spacing between the needle-like microstructure. With the increasing aging temperature, the number of equiaxed microstructure increases linearly, and the proportion of fine secondary O phase decreases while the thickness increases. The lamellar morphology of O phase can be retained at a faster cooling rate, while a portion of lamellar O phase is converted to the B2 phase after furnace cooling. Through heat treatment, the volume fraction and the size of lamellar O phase could be well controlled.

Titanium alloys have excellent properties and are widely used in aerospace, medicine, chemical industry, and other fields. With the rapid development of the powder metallurgy and 3D printing industries, the demand for ultra-fine titanium alloy powders has increased significantly. It should be noted that the particle size of titanium alloy powders determines the application process. However, the high melting point of titanium and titanium alloys and the limitation of many factors, such as the prepared powders being easily contaminated by secondary pollution, make the preparation cost higher, which restricts their promotion and application. In this study, the research progress of micro and nano titanium alloy powder preparation process is described, and the existing problems of various processes are analyzed and discussed, and it is proposed that the direct reduction in TiO2 to obtain micro and nano titanium alloy powder is the key research direction in the future. In particular, the preparation of micro and nano titanium alloy powder by “calciothermic self-propagation process” has great industrial potential.

Abstract Introduction Intravitreal injections of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) drugs have been widely used in patients with macular edema (ME) secondary to retinal vein occlusion (RVO); however, recurrence is a major concern. This study aims to observe the clinical effects of atorvastatin and intravitreal therapy in the treatment of patients with branch or central RVO-ME and coexistent carotid plaques (CP). Methods and analysis A prospective randomized controlled clinical trial will be conducted. Sixty-four patients diagnosed with branch or central RVO-ME and coexistent CP will be enrolled and randomly allocated in a 1:1 ratio to the control and experimental groups. The control group will be treated with intravitreal conbercept monthly for 3 months, followed by monthly evaluation and injection of pro re nata (PRN) for 12 months, while the experimental group will be treated with oral atorvastatin 20 mg daily combined with the control group treatment. If a drop of best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) is more than five Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) letters (one line) or an increment in central subfield thickness (CSFT) of 100 μm (or a 10% increment from the previous visit), intravitreal re-treatment will be performed. Outcome measurements include CSFT, BCVA, number of injections, and incidence of adverse events during the 12-month follow-up period. Differences between groups will be evaluated using Student’s t-test, and comparisons between groups will be evaluated using repeated-measures analysis of variance. Ethics and dissemination The study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board of Nanjing Lishui People’s Hospital, Nanjing, China (approval number 2023KY0418-12, dated 18 April 2023), and has been registered on chictr.org.cn. Written informed consent will be collected from each patient and the results of this trial will be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal.
