This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of water injection management practices for complex and impactful onshore and offshore carbonate reservoirs. It delves into the fundamental aspects of waterflooding design, surveillance techniques, and monitoring methods tailored for the unique challenges posed by carbonate formations. Two case studies from the Permian Basin in Texas and two from Lula Field offshore Brazil and Agbami Field offshore Nigeria are examined considering scientific principles into practice to provide insights into best practices, lessons learned, and strategies to maximize the benefits derived from real noteworthy waterflood operations. The paper underscores the significance of rigorous reservoir characterization, including understanding reservoir architecture, heterogeneities, fracture networks, fluid communication pathways, and rock–fluid interactions. It emphasizes the crucial role of integrated multidisciplinary teams involving geologists, reservoir engineers, production engineers, and field operators in ensuring successful waterflood design, implementation, and optimization. Through the case studies, the paper highlights the importance of designing pattern configurations, well placements, and injection/production strategies to the specific reservoir characteristics, continually optimizing these elements based on surveillance data. It also stresses the necessity of comprehensive data acquisition, advanced analytics, numerical simulations, and frequent model updates for effective reservoir management and decision-making. The paper is impactful in terms of the lessons learned from the actual case studies, and how can these be implemented in actual field projects. Different case studies documented in the paper provide the challenges facing them and how different authors have addressed their problems in unique ways. The paper distills the information and important findings from a variety of case studies and provides succinct information that is of immense value as a reference. Important findings of these case studies are connected using creativity and are innovative as they introduce unique techniques and establish successful ideas to create new value in terms of maximizing oil recovery. Most importantly, this paper explores the application of innovative technologies, such as intelligent completions, 4D seismic monitoring, and water–alternating gas (WAG) injection, which can significantly improve waterflood performance in complex carbonate reservoirs. In summary, the paper provides a thorough understanding of the factors contributing to the success and failure of waterfloods in carbonate reservoirs through case studies based on factually and technically sound operations. It documents guidelines for optimizing waterflood performance and reducing or eliminating the potential for failures, reinforcing positive results in these challenging yet invaluable hydrocarbon resources.

The urgent need to find mitigating pathways for limiting world CO2 emissions to net zero by 2050 has led to intense research on CO2 sequestration in deep saline reservoirs. This paper reviews key advancements in lab- and simulation-scale research on petrophysical, geochemical, and mineralogical changes during CO2–brine–rock interactions performed in the last 25 years. It delves into CO2 MPD (mineralization, precipitation, and dissolution) and explores alterations in petrophysical properties during core flooding and in static batch reactors. These properties include changes in wettability, CO2 and brine interfacial tension, diffusion, dispersion, CO2 storage capacity, and CO2 leakage in caprock and sedimentary rocks under reservoir conditions. The injection of supercritical CO2 into deep saline aquifers can lead to unforeseen geochemical and mineralogical changes, possibly jeopardizing the CCS (carbon capture and storage) process. There is a general lack of understanding of the reservoir’s interaction with the CO2 phase at the pore/grain scale. This research addresses the gap in predicting the long-term changes of the CO2–brine–rock interaction using various geochemical reactive transport simulators. Péclet and Damköhler numbers can contribute to a better understanding of geochemical interactions and reactive transport processes. Additionally, the dielectric constant requires further investigation, particularly for pre- and post-CO2–brine–rock interactions. For comprehensive modeling of CO2 storage over various timescales, the geochemical modeling software called the Geochemist’s Workbench was found to outperform others. Wettability alteration is another crucial aspect affecting CO2–brine–rock interactions under varying temperature, pressure, and salinity conditions, which is essential for ensuring long-term CO2 storage security and monitoring. Moreover, dual-energy CT scanning can provide deeper insights into geochemical interactions and their complexities.

The efficacy of cell-based therapies as an alternative to autologous bone grafts requires biomaterials to localize cells at the defect and drive osteogenic differentiation. Hydrogels are ideal cell delivery vehicles that can provide instructional cues via their composition or mechanical properties but commonly lack osteoconductive components that nucleate mineral. To address this challenge, we entrapped mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) in a composite hydrogel based on two naturally-derived polymers (alginate and hyaluronate) containing biomineralized polymeric microspheres. Mechanical properties of the hydrogels were dependent upon composition. The presentation of the adhesive tripeptide Arginine-Glycine-Aspartic Acid (RGD) from both polymers induced greater osteogenic differentiation of ovine MSCs in vitro compared to gels formed of RGD-alginate or RGD-alginate/hyaluronate alone. We then evaluated the capacity of this construct to stimulate bone healing when transplanting autologous, culture-expanded MSCs into a surgical induced, critical-sized ovine iliac crest bone defect. At 12 weeks post-implantation, defects treated with MSCs transplanted in composite gels exhibited significant increases in blood vessel density, osteoid formation, and bone formation compared to acellular gels or untreated defects. These findings demonstrate the capacity of osteoconductive hydrogels to promote bone formation with autologous MSCs in a large animal bone defect model and provide a promising vehicle for cell-based therapies of bone healing.

Soybean (Glycine max) is an economically important crop, ranking first among the edible oilseed crops in the world due to its oil content and nutritional value. Besides, it is used as a dietary supplement and a source of pharmaceuticals. The recent rapid climate changes and increasing global population have led to increasing demand for vegetable oil. In the recent past, advances in the field of plant biotechnology have revolutionized agricultural practices at a global level to enhance the yield of crops. This technology not only makes an impact on the agricultural market but also opens up new corridors for agriculture-related industrial applications of this important crop. Therefore, in the last two decades, soybean has gained attention for genetic improvement with remarkable developments in the manipulations of genes for the induction of desired characteristics. In this review, we introduced the transgenic approach as a promising tool for the improvement of soybean oilseed quality and productivity. Then, the enhancement of nutritional and pharmaceutical value together with biotic and abiotic stress-resistant ability was summarized and compared. The methods and strategies for achieving soybean crops with improved abiotic stress tolerance, productivity, and pharmaceutics are categorized to help with future research.

Background Paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity (PSH) is an understudied complication of traumatic brain injury (TBI). PSH usually presents with transient rise in sympathetic outflow, leading to increased blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, respiratory rate, sweating, and posturing activity. We retrospectively analyzed the incidence of PSH in TBI using PSH-assessment measure (PSH-AM) scale. Methods This single-center retrospective cohort study was conducted in traumatic head injury patients admitted in the intensive care unit from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2019 in a tertiary care center. The data was collected from the hospital database after obtaining approval from the hospital ethics committee. Results A total of 287 patients (18–65 years of age) were admitted to intensive care unit (ICU) with TBI out of which 227 patients were analyzed who had ICU stay for more than 14 days. PSH was diagnosed in 70 (30.8%) patients. Mean age of PSH positive patients was 40 ± 18 and 49 ± 11 years for PSH negative patients (p < 0.001). The age group between 40 and 50 years had a higher incidence of PSH. The age and Glasgow coma score (GCS) were significantly associated with the occurrence of PSH. The GCS score demonstrated good accuracy for predicting the occurrence of PSH with AUC 0.83, 95% CI of 0.775 to 0.886, and a p-value of 0.001. Conclusion We observed that the incidence of PSH was 30.8% in the patients with TBI. Age and GCS were found to have a significant association for predicting the occurrence of PSH. The patients who developed PSH had a longer length of hospital stay in ICU.

Abstract Using brain atlases to localize regions of interest is a requirement for making neuroscientifically valid statistical inferences. These atlases, represented in volumetric or surface coordinate spaces, can describe brain topology from a variety of perspectives. Although many human brain atlases have circulated the field over the past fifty years, limited effort has been devoted to their standardization. Standardization can facilitate consistency and transparency with respect to orientation, resolution, labeling scheme, file storage format, and coordinate space designation. Our group has worked to consolidate an extensive selection of popular human brain atlases into a single, curated, open-source library, where they are stored following a standardized protocol with accompanying metadata, which can serve as the basis for future atlases. Cesium (Cs) is a soil contaminant and toxic to the ecosystem, especially the plant species. In this study, we have assessed the potential of a halophyte Sesuvium portulacastrum for its Cs tolerance and accumulation. Thirty days old S. portulacastrum plants were subjected to different concentrations of Cs (0, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 150 mg·L−1 Cs) using cesium chloride. The biomass and photosynthetic pigments were not affected up to 25 mg·L−1 Cs treatment while a significant decline in pigment levels was observed at higher concentrations. The Cs treatments increased protein content at low concentrations while higher concentrations were inhibitory. Under Cs exposure, significant induction of antioxidant enzymes such as ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT), glutathione reductase (GR), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) was observed. The antioxidant enzyme activities were upregulated up to 50 mg·L−1 Cs but decreased significantly at 150 mg·L−1. The accumulation of Cs was dose and tissue-dependent as evidenced by a higher accumulation of Cs in leaves (536.10 μg·g−1) as compared to stem (413.74 μg·g−1) and roots (284.69 μg·g−1). The results suggest that S. portulacastrum is a hyper-accumulator of Cs and could be useful for the phytoremediation of Cs-contaminated soils.

Recombinant proteins and cytokines are under broad preclinical and clinical investigation to promote angiogenesis, but their success is limited by ineffective delivery, lack of long-term stability and excessive cost. Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSC) secrete bioactive trophic factors, and thus, may provide an effective alternative to address these challenges. Glycine-Histidine-Lysine (GHK) is a peptide fragment of osteonectin, a matricellular protein with reported proangiogenic potential. We examined the capacity of GHK to up-regulate secretion of proangiogenic factors from human MSC in culture and when covalently coupled to alginate hydrogels. GHK had no apparent cytotoxic effects on MSC in culture over a wide range of concentrations. We detected a dose-dependent increase in vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) concentration in media conditioned by GHK-treated MSC, which increased endothelial cell proliferation, migration and tubule formation. We covalently coupled GHK to alginate using carbodiimide chemistry, and human MSC were entrapped in alginate hydrogels to assess VEGF secretion. Similar to monolayer culture, MSC responded to GHK-modified gels by secreting increased concentrations of VEGF and basic fibroblast growth factor compared to unmodified gels. The pre-treatment of MSC with antibodies to α6 and β1 integrins prior to entrapment in GHK-modified gels abrogated VEGF secretion, suggesting that the proangiogenic response of MSC was integrin-mediated. These data demonstrate that the proangiogenic potential of MSC can be significantly increased by the presentation of GHK with a biodegradable carrier, therefore increasing their clinical potential when used for tissue repair.

Abstract Background Due to increased prevalence of H. pylori antimicrobial resistance worldwide and more importantly the resistance patterns vary between different geographical regions, it is important to survey local H. pylori antibiotic resistance profile to provide physicians with more informed drug choices to better treat H. pylori infection. To our knowledge, this is the first study to examine the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance of H. pylori in Karnataka state of South India. Results A total of 113 H. pylori strains were isolated from gastric biopsies and tested: 81.4% were resistant to metronidazole, 54.9% were resistant to levofloxacin, 20.4% were resistant to clarithromycin, 5.3% were resistant to tetracycline and 7.1% were resistant to amoxicillin. Multidrug resistance was detected in 59.3% of total isolated strains, among which 86.6% were resistant to at least both metronidazole and levofloxacin. In this study, 38 out of 113 H. pylori strains had been whole-genome sequenced. Based on the draft genomes, RdxA and/or FrxA inactivation mutations were found to present in 75% of metronidazole-resistant strains. Clarithromycin-resistant strains had mainly A2143G and G2224A mutations in the 23 rRNA gene. While 87.1% levofloxacin-resistant strains had amino acid substitution mutations occurring predominantly at N87 and D91 in GyrA, novel mutations in the same protein including an insertion of five amino acid residues (QDNSV), immediately after the start codon, and a substitution mutation at R295 were identified. Conclusion High primary resistance to metronidazole and levofloxacin, and a modest occurrence of clarithromycin resistance were revealed in H. pylori strains isolated from Karnataka patients. Therefore metronidazole-, levofloxacin- and clarithromycin-based triple therapies are not suitable as first-line treatment in Karnataka. Both amoxicillin and tetracycline can still be used to eradicate H. pylori infection in this region. We also revealed novel mutations in GyrA protein that possibly contribute to H. pylori resistance in levofloxacin, which merit further investigations.

Applying the optimum rate of fertilizer nitrogen (N) is a critical factor for field management. Multispectral information collected by active canopy sensors can potentially indicate the leaf N status and aid in predicting grain yield. Crop Circle multispectral data were acquired with the purpose of measuring the reflectance data to calculate vegetation indices (VIs) at different growth stages. Applying the optimum rate of fertilizer N can have a considerable impact on grain yield and profitability. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the reliability of a handheld Crop Circle ACS-430, to estimate corn leaf N concentration and predict grain yield of corn using machine learning (ML) models. The analysis was conducted using four ML models to identify the best prediction model for measurements acquired with a Crop Circle ACS-430 field sensor at three growth stages. Four fertilizer N levels from deficient to excessive in 50/50 spilt were applied to corn at 1–2 leaves, with visible leaf collars (V1–V2 stage) and at the V6–V7 stage to establish widely varying N nutritional status. Crop Circle spectral observations were used to derive 25 VIs for different growth stages (V4, V6, and VT) of corn at the W. B. Andrews Agricultural Systems farm of Mississippi State University. Multispectral raw data, along with Vis, were used to quantify leaf N status and predict the yield of corn. In addition, the accuracy of wavelength-based and VI-based models were compared to examine the best model inputs. Due to limited observed data, the stratification approach was used to split data to train and test set to obtain balanced data for each stage. Repeated cross validation (RCV) was then used to train the models. Results showed that the Simplified Canopy Chlorophyll Content Index (SCCCI) and Red-edge ratio vegetation index (RERVI) were the most effective VIs for estimating leaf N% and that SCCCI, Red-edge chlorophyll index (CIRE), RERVI, Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI), and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) were the most effective VIs for predicting corn grain yield. Additionally, among the four ML models utilized in this research, support vector regression (SVR) achieved the most accurate results for estimating leaf N concentration using either spectral bands or VIs as the model inputs.
