Abstract

International audience; Plastic pollution is a worldwide environmental issue, which affects all natural habitats, even in the most pristine areas. Recent workssuggest that rivers may act as temporary sinks for land-based plastic pollution while also serving as transport “highways” for plastic waste tothe ocean. Until now though, studies on airborne microplastics (MPs) have mainly been focused on urban areas, with much less attentiongiven towards remote and pristine systems. Further, studies have also stated that atmospheric circulation is responsible for the re-emissionand return of MP particles from marine environments back to terrestrial habitats. Here, we present the results derived from the cooperationbetween the PLASTICØPYR and ATMO-PLASTIC projects, both focused on the impact of plastic pollution in the Pyrenees under differentlevels of human activity. The PLASTICØPYR and ATMO-PLASTIC projects aim to quantify MPs in different river habitats and the emission ofMPs to the atmospheric compartment, respectively. Both projects aim to illustrate that MP pollution is not restricted uniquely to urban sites.The main goal of this collaboration is to acquire a holistic understanding of the link between human activity and plastic pollution in fluvialsystems and the atmospheric compartment, in order to identify the main sources of MP pollution in pristine areas of the Pyrenees, includingthe site of Bernadouze OHM Vicdessos. Our results will allow us to identify the most impacted areas, and potential MP pollution hotspots,which in turn will further our understanding of plastic dynamics between rivers and the atmosphere.; La pollution plastique est un problème environnemental mondial, qui affecte tous les habitats naturels, même les plus vierges. Desétudes récentes suggèrent que les rivières peuvent fonctionner comme des puits temporaires pour la pollution plastique terrestre et commeune voie d'entrée des déchets plastiques dans l'océan, cependant l’accumulation en milieu marin n'est peut-être pas la destination finale desparticules microplastiques. Les études sur les microplastiques (MPs) en suspension dans l'air se sont principalement centrées sur les zonesurbaines. D’autres études indiquent que la circulation atmosphérique est responsable du refoulement des particules de MPs des habitatsmarins vers les habitats terrestres. Le présent poster est le fruit de la collaboration des projets PLASTICØPYR et ATMO-PLASTIC, tousdeux axés sur l'impact de la pollution plastique dans les Pyrénées en relation avec différents niveaux d'activité humaine. L’objectif des projetsPLASTICØPYR et ATMO-PLASTIC est de quantifier les MPs dans différents habitats fluviaux et l'émission de MPs dans le compartimentatmosphérique, respectivement. Les deux projets visent à illustrer le fait que la pollution par les MPs n'est pas limitée uniquement aux sitesurbains. L'objectif principal de cette collaboration est d'acquérir une compréhension globale du lien entre l'activité humaine et la pollutionplastique dans les systèmes fluviaux et le compartiment atmosphérique, afin d'identifier les principales sources de pollution par les MPs dansdes zones vierges telles que les Pyrénées dont le site de Bernadouze OHM Vicdessos. Nos résultats nous permettront d'identifier les zonesles plus impactées et de comprendre la dynamique du plastique entre les rivières et l'atmosphère.

Abstract

The carbon balance of peatlands is predicted to shift from a sink to a source this century. However, peatland ecosystems are still omitted from the main Earth system models that are used for future climate change projections, and they are not considered in integrated assessment models that are used in impact and mitigation studies. By using evidence synthesized from the literature and an expert elicitation, we define and quantify the leading drivers of change that have impacted peatland carbon stocks during the Holocene and predict their effect during this century and in the far future. We also identify uncertainties and knowledge gaps in the scientific community and provide insight towards better integration of peatlands into modelling frameworks. Given the importance of the contribution by peatlands to the global carbon cycle, this study shows that peatland science is a critical research area and that we still have a long way to go to fully understand the peatland–carbon–climate nexus.

Abstract

The mineral reserves of mountain environments have been exploited since the beginning of metallurgy and legacy contamination from activities such as mining persist to this day. This is particularly the case in the soils of the European mountains where potential harmful trace elements (such as Pb, Sb, As, and Hg) of anthropogenic origin have accumulated since Antiquity. The French Pyrenees are no exception to this, as many mine sites in the region date back to the Bronze Age, resulting in landscape alternations and anthropogenic environmental impacts on a millennial scale. The mountain critical zone is sensitive both to human‐induced environmental changes (e.g., agriculture, mining, clear‐cutting) as well as to climate‐induced rapid environmental fluctuations. The legacy of trace metal contamination in other environments has been documented at individual sites in Europe and around the world, however, the fate of such legacy metals over time, in particular within mountainous regions, is poorly understood. This is despite the fact that a large proportion of metals was deposited and stored before 1800 CE in these areas. Using a case study from the Central French Pyrenees as a specific example, we here show that legacy metal (e.g., Pb) contamination in mountain environments is still persistent and a potential threat to mountain ecosystem health. We emphasize methods that aim to understand, in an interdisciplinary and coordinated way, the fate of legacy metals in the Central Pyrenees and beyond. We highlight the importance of research in the mountain critical zone for the whole of Europe, as mountains are the source of water and provide regional economic and socio‐ecological resources. The goal of this chapter is, therefore, to draw attention to and provide fellow researchers with, the background information and methodologies needed to address the problem of legacy metal accumulation, transport, storage, remobilization, and redeposition in mountain watersheds, as well as potential subsequent environmental impacts downstream.

Abstract

International audience; In the framework of climate changes, peatland ecosystems are compartments of the Critical Zone of growing importance for greenhouse gas (GHG) exchanges with the atmosphere. Peatlands contain about 30 % of the total organic soil carbon worldwide. Interactions of GHG between atmosphere and peatland are potentially controlled by organic matter production and degradation controlled by biotic functiuns, which are in turn influenced by diverse abiotic factors including (1) water saturation, (2) peat humification degree, and (3) water quality conditioning electron acceptor availability. Delineating the detailed roles of these mechanisms is therefore challenging for long-term peatland management, requiring a detailed spatio-temporal monitoring of a wide range of hydrological and biogeochemical parameters.The Frasne peatland (Jura mountains, eastern France), belonging to a regional natural reserve is an outstanding site for such studies as it is monitored since 2008 in the framework of the national observatory of peatlands (SNO Tourbières),and belongs to the Zones Ateliers (RZA) and French Critical Zone (OZCAR) networks supplying the Europe Long-Term Ecosystem Research (eLTER) database (DEIMS-SDR). The peatland took place in a periglacial context on groundmoraines covering a large-scale karstified synclinal structure. This complex geological setting is combined with eco-physical (peat thicknesses and maturity), and hydrological (water-table depth) heterogeneities at the peatland scale.Based on daily hydrometeorological data (P, T, potential evapotranspiration, groundwater level) and monthly monitoring (hydrochemistry; peat lability, GHG fluxes) in 25 piezometers, the goal of the CRITICAL PEAT project is to identify the hydrological and biogeochemical drivers controlling GHG exchanges between peatland and atmosphere. In this perspective, this contribution aims at presenting preliminary results on the hydroclimatic sensitivity of the system inferred from correlation analyses, and its relationships with water origin and chemistry.

Abstract

The French critical zone initiative, called OZCAR (Observatoires de la Zone Critique–Application et Recherche or Critical Zone Observatories–Application and Research) is a National Research Infrastructure (RI). OZCAR-RI is a network of instrumented sites, bringing together 21 pre-existing research observatories monitoring different compartments of the zone situated between “the rock and the sky,” the Earth’s skin or critical zone (CZ), over the long term. These observatories are regionally based and have specific initial scientific questions, monitoring strategies, databases, and modeling activities. The diversity of OZCAR-RI observatories and sites is well representative of the heterogeneity of the CZ and of the scientific communities studying it. Despite this diversity, all OZCAR-RI sites share a main overarching mandate, which is to monitor, understand, and predict (“earthcast”) the fluxes of water and matter of the Earth’s near surface and how they will change in response to the “new climatic regime.” The vision for OZCAR strategic development aims at designing an open infrastructure, building a national CZ community able to share a systemic representation of the CZ , and educating a new generation of scientists more apt to tackle the wicked problem of the Anthropocene. OZCAR articulates around: (i) a set of common scientific questions and cross-cutting scientific activities using the wealth of OZCAR-RI observatories, (ii) an ambitious instrumental development program, and (iii) a better interaction between data and models to integrate the different time and spatial scales. Internationally, OZCAR-RI aims at strengthening the CZ community by providing a model of organization for pre-existing observatories and by offering CZ instrumented sites. OZCAR is one of two French mirrors of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructure (eLTER-ESFRI) project.

Abstract

Glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) are membrane-spanning lipids from Bacteria and Archaea that are ubiquitous in a range of natural archives and especially abundant in peat. Previous work demonstrated that the distribution of bacterial branched GDGTs (brGDGTs) in mineral soils is correlated to environmental factors such as mean annual air temperature (MAAT) and soil pH. However, the influence of these parameters on brGDGT distributions in peat is largely unknown. Here we investigate the distribution of brGDGTs in 470 samples from 96 peatlands around the world with a broad mean annual air temperature (-8 to 27 degrees C) and pH (3-8) range and present the first peat-specific brGDGT-based temperature and pH calibrations. Our results demonstrate that the degree of cyclisation of brGDGTs in peat is positively correlated with pH, pH = 2.49 x CBTpeat + 8.07 (n = 51, R-2 = 0.58, RMSE = 0.8) and the degree of methylation of brGDGTs is positively correlated with MAAT, MAAT(peat) (degrees C) = 52.18 x MBT'(5me) - 23.05 (n = 96, R-2 = 0.76, RMSE = 4.7 degrees C). These peat-specific calibrations are distinct from the available mineral soil calibrations. In light of the error in the temperature calibration (similar to 4.7 degrees C), we urge caution in any application to reconstruct late Holocene climate variability, where the climatic signals are relatively small, and the duration of excursions could be brief. Instead, these proxies are well-suited to reconstruct large amplitude, longer-term shifts in climate such as deglacial transitions. Indeed, when applied to a peat deposit spanning the late glacial period (similar to 15.2 kyr), we demonstrate that MAAT(peat) yields absolute temperatures and relative temperature changes that are consistent with those from other proxies. In addition, the application of MAAT(peat) to fossil peat (i.e. lignites) has the potential to reconstruct terrestrial climate during the Cenozoic. We conclude that there is clear potential to us

Abstract

Mountain catchments provide for the livelihood of more than half of humankind, and have become a key destination for tourist and recreation activities globally. Mountain ecosystems are generally considered to be less complex and less species diverse due to the harsh environmental conditions. As such, they are also more sensitive to the various impacts of the Anthropocene. For this reason, mountain regions may serve as sentinels of change and provide ideal ecosystems for studying climate and global change impacts on biodiversity. We here review different facets of anthropogenic impacts on mountain freshwater ecosystems. We put particular focus on micropollutants and their distribution and redistribution due to hydrological extremes, their direct influence on water quality and their indirect influence on ecosystem health via changes of freshwater species and their interactions. We show that those changes may drive pathogen establishment in new environments with harmful consequences for freshwater species, but also for the human population. Based on the reviewed literature, we recommend reconstructing the recent past of anthropogenic impact through sediment analyses, to focus efforts on small, but highly productive waterbodies, and to collect data on the occurrence and variability of microorganisms, biofilms, plankton species and key species, such as amphibians due to their bioindicator value for ecosystem health and water quality. The newly gained knowledge can then be used to develop a comprehensive framework of indicators to robustly inform policy and decision making on current and future risks for ecosystem health and human well-being.

21. Impact of deforestation on solid and dissolved organic matter characteristics of tropical peat forests: implications for carbon release

Abstract

This study compares the organic chemistry of peat beneath one of last remaining pristine tropical peat forests in Southeast Asia with a neighbouring peat dome that has been deforested, but not intentionally drained, in the Belait district of Brunei Darussalam, Borneo. We characterized the solid and dissolved organic matter collected from the two domes, through a combination of methods including elemental analysis, phenolic content and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) investigation of solid peat, as well as optical characterisation (absorbance, fluorescence) of dissolved organic matter (DOM). The peat had a high content of lignin, consistent with its origin from the Shorea albida trees on the domes. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration in the pore water was significantly greater in the deforested site (79.9 ± 5.5 mg l[superscript −1]) than the pristine site (62.2 ± 2.2 mg l[superscript −1]). The dissolved organic matter was richer in nitrogen and phenolics in the deforested site. The optical properties (Fluorescence Index) indicated a modification of DOM cycling in the deforested site (enhanced decomposition of the peat and fresh litter). Comparison of the solid peat composition between the two sites also suggests effects of deforestation: sulphur, nitrogen and phenolic contents were higher in the deforested site. 34. Canopy influence on trace metal atmospheric inputs on forest ecosystems: Speciation in throughfall

Abstract

Trace Metal (TM: Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sb and Zn) atmospheric inputs have been studied on six forested sites. In order to evaluate canopy interaction with atmospheric inputs, TM have been measured in both Open Field Precipitation (OFP) and Throughfall (TF). Anthropogenic contribution to OFP composition is high for Zn, Cd and Sb, reflecting actual TM emissions trends. Canopy greatly influences precipitation composition, through different processes, including assimilation and leaching by canopy, complexation as well as accumulation/dissolution of dry deposition. TM and DOC physical fractionation between colloidal and truly dissolved phases was performed with ultrafiltration. Al, Fe, Pb and Cu are found in the colloidal fraction whereas Cd, Ni, Zn and Sb are mostly in the truly dissolved fraction. Chemical speciation predicted with WHAM-VI shows that complexation by DOC is the dominant speciation for TM in TF. Al, Fe, Pb and Cu are almost entirely complexed, whereas Ni, Cd and Zn are present in average 30% in the free metal ion form. TM speciation in TF provides new insights on processes occurring on the canopy. Elements (Cd, Ni, Zn) present in labile forms interact with canopy and are cycled in the ecosystem. Their concentration is slightly increased or even decreased in throughfall. Sb, Pb and Cu concentration are increased through canopy. Influence of dry deposition accumulation is expected.

Abstract

This study compares the organic chemistry of peat beneath one of last remaining pristine tropical peat forests in Southeast Asia with a neighbouring peat dome that has been deforested, but not intentionally drained, in the Belait district of Brunei Darussalam, Borneo. We characterized the solid and dissolved organic matter collected from the two domes, through a combination of methods including elemental analysis, phenolic content and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) investigation of solid peat, as well as optical characterisation (absorbance, fluorescence) of dissolved organic matter (DOM). The peat had a high content of lignin, consistent with its origin from the Shorea albida trees on the domes. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration in the pore water was significantly greater in the deforested site (79.9 ± 5.5 mg l[superscript −1]) than the pristine site (62.2 ± 2.2 mg l[superscript −1]). The dissolved organic matter was richer in nitrogen and phenolics in the deforested site. The optical properties (Fluorescence Index) indicated a modification of DOM cycling in the deforested site (enhanced decomposition of the peat and fresh litter). Comparison of the solid peat composition between the two sites also suggests effects of deforestation: sulphur, nitrogen and phenolic contents were higher in the deforested site. Abstract

Methane-cycling is becoming more important in high-latitude ecosystems as global warming makes permafrost organic carbon increasingly available. We explored 387 samples from three high-latitudes regions (Siberia, Alaska and Patagonia) focusing on mineral/organic soils (wetlands, peatlands, forest), lake/pond sediment and water. Physicochemical, climatic and geographic variables were integrated with 16S rDNA amplicon sequences to determine the structure of the overall microbial communities and of specific methanogenic and methanotrophic guilds. Physicochemistry (especially pH) explained the largest proportion of variation in guild composition, confirming species sorting (i.e., environmental filtering) as a key mechanism in microbial assembly. Geographic distance impacted more strongly beta diversity for (i) methanogens and methanotrophs than the overall prokaryotes and, (ii) the sediment habitat, suggesting that dispersal limitation contributed to shape the communities of methane-cycling microorganisms. Bioindicator taxa characterising different ecological niches (i.e., specific combinations of geographic, climatic and physicochemical variables) were identified, highlighting the importance of Methanoregula as generalist methanogens. Methylocystis and Methylocapsa were key methanotrophs in low pH niches while Methylobacter and Methylomonadaceae in neutral environments. This work gives insight into the present and projected distribution of methane-cycling microbes at high latitudes under climate change predictions, which is crucial for constraining their impact on greenhouse gas budgets., (© 2023 The Authors. Abstract

High latitudes are experiencing intense ecosystem changes with climate warming. The underlying methane (CH 4 ) cycling dynamics remain unresolved, despite its crucial climatic feedback. Atmospheric CH 4 emissions are heterogeneous, resulting from local geochemical drivers, global climatic factors, and microbial production/consumption balance. Holistic studies are mandatory to capture CH 4 cycling complexity. Here, we report a large set of integrated microbial and biogeochemical data from 387 samples, using a concerted sampling strategy and experimental protocols. The study followed international standards to ensure inter-comparisons of data amongst three high-latitude regions: Alaska, Siberia, and Patagonia. The dataset encompasses different representative environmental features (e.g. lake, wetland, tundra, forest soil) of these high-latitude sites and their respective heterogeneity (e.g. characteristic microtopographic patterns). The data included physicochemical parameters, greenhouse gas concentrations and emissions, organic matter characterization, trace elements and nutrients, isotopes, microbial quantification and composition. 47. Temperature differently affected methanogenic pathways and microbial communities in sub-Antarctic freshwater ecosystems.

Abstract

Freshwater ecosystems are responsible for an important part of the methane (CH 4 ) emissions which are likely to change with global warming. This study aims to evaluate temperature-induced (from 5 to 20 °C) changes on microbial community structure and methanogenic pathways in five sub-Antarctic lake sediments from Magallanes strait to Cape Horn, Chile. We combined in situ CH 4 flux measurements, CH 4 production rates (MPRs), gene abundance quantification and microbial community structure analysis (metabarcoding of the 16S rRNA gene). Under unamended conditions, a temperature increase of 5 °C doubled MPR while microbial community structure was not affected. Stimulation of methanogenesis by methanogenic precursors as acetate and H 2 /CO 2 , resulted in an increase of MPRs up to 127-fold and 19-fold, respectively, as well as an enrichment of mcrA-carriers strikingly stronger under acetate amendment. At low temperatures, H 2 /CO 2 -derived MPRs were considerably lower (down to 160-fold lower) than the acetate-derived MPRs, but the contribution of hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis increased with temperature. Temperature dependence of MPRs was significantly higher in incubations spiked with H 2 /CO 2 (c. 1.9 eV) compared to incubations spiked with acetate or unamended (c. 0.8 eV). Temperature was not found to shape the total microbial community structure, that rather exhibited a site-specific variability among the studied lakes. However, the methanogenic archaeal community structure was driven by amended methanogenic precursors with a dominance of Methanobacterium in H 2 /CO 2 -based incubations and Methanosarcina in acetate-based incubations. We also suggested the importance of acetogenic H 2 -production outcompeting hydrogenotrohic methanogenesis especially at low temperatures, further supported by homoacetogen proportion in the microcosm communities. The combination of in situ-, and laboratory-based measurements and molecular approaches indicates that the hydrogenotrophic pathway may become more important with increasing temperatures than the acetoclastic pathway. Arctic lakes emit methane (CH 4 ) to the atmosphere. The magnitude of this flux could increase with permafrost thaw but might also be mitigated by microbial CH 4 oxidation. Methane oxidation in oxic water has been extensively studied, while the contribution of anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) to CH 4 mitigation is not fully understood. We have investigated four Northern Siberian stratified lakes in an area of discontinuous permafrost nearby Igarka, Russia. Analyses of CH 4 concentrations in the water column demonstrated that 60 to 100% of upward diffusing CH 4 was oxidized in the anoxic layers of the four lakes. A combination of pmoA and mcrA gene qPCR and 16S rRNA gene metabarcoding showed that the same taxa, all within Methylomonadaceae and including the predominant genus Methylobacter as well as Crenothrix, could be the major methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) in the anoxic water of the four lakes. Correlation between Methylomonadaceae and OTUs within Methylotenera, Geothrix and Geobacter genera indicated that AOM might occur in an interaction between MOB, denitrifiers and iron-cycling partners. We conclude that MOB within Methylomonadaceae could have a crucial impact on CH 4 cycling in these Siberian Arctic lakes by mitigating the majority of produced CH 4 before it leaves the anoxic zone. 49. Sub-oxycline methane oxidation can fully uptake CH 4 produced in sediments: case study of a lake in Siberia.

Abstract

It is commonly assumed that methane (CH 4 ) released by lakes into the atmosphere is mainly produced in anoxic sediment and transported by diffusion or ebullition through the water column to the surface of the lake. In contrast to that prevailing idea, it has been gradually established that the epilimnetic CH 4 does not originate exclusively from sediments but is also locally produced or laterally transported from the littoral zone. Therefore, CH 4 cycling in the epilimnion and the hypolimnion might not be as closely linked as previously thought. We utilized a high-resolution method used to determine dissolved CH 4 concentration to analyze a Siberian lake in which epilimnetic and hypolimnetic CH 4 cycles were fully segregated by a section of the water column where CH 4 was not detected. This layer, with no detected CH 4 , was well below the oxycline and the photic zone and thus assumed to be anaerobic. However, on the basis of a diffusion-reaction model, molecular biology, and stable isotope analyses, we determined that this layer takes up all the CH 4 produced in the sediments and the deepest section of the hypolimnion. We concluded that there was no CH 4 exchange between the hypolimnion (dominated by methanotrophy and methanogenesis) and the epilimnion (dominated by methane lateral transport and/or oxic production), resulting in a vertically segregated lake internal CH 4 cycle.

Abstract

Permafrost peatlands are important carbon stocks currently experiencing rapid evolution after permafrost thaw. Following thaw, dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a potentially important pathway for the release of permafrost carbon. This study investigates the origin and composition of DOM across sites at different stages of thaw in a discontinuous permafrost area of North Siberia. We determine the optical properties, molecular composition, and stable isotopic (δ 13 C) and radiocarbon ( 14 C) contents of DOM. Early stages of thaw are characterized by high DOC concentrations, high aromaticity, contribution of vegetation-derived DOM, and a high contribution of permafrost carbon. In contrast, in later stages, the microbial contribution to DOM increases, and only modern carbon is detected. This work links DOM composition with its radiocarbon content in permafrost peatlands. It shows that DOM originating from previously frozen permafrost peatlands is highly aromatic and previously processed. It highlights the variability of post-thaw carbon dynamics in boreal and arctic ecosystems.
