13. Prevalence of Yersinia pestis among rodents captured in a semi-arid tropical ecosystem of south-western Zimbabwe

Abstract

This study assessed the prevalence of plague bacterium (Yersinia pestis) among rodents captured in Umzingwane and Nkayi districts, south-western Zimbabwe. A total of 44 rodents were captured on three consecutive days per trapping session in the study sites using a removal trapping method in April 2018. Captured rodents were euthanized, and blood samples were collected. The Giemsa stain method was used to detect plague bacteria. The trapping success was not significantly different (χ² = 1.50, df = 1, P = 0.221), 8.5% for the Nkayi district, while in the Umzingwane district, it was 8%. Overall, only one rodent species, i.e., Mastomys natalensis, tested positive for Y. pestis in the Umzingwane district, thus yielding a prevalence rate of 2.3% for the entire study area. This was the most important finding of a Y. pestis-positive rodent in a non-endemic wild area in the Umzingwane district. These results point to a low prevalence of Y. pestis in the study area and the importance of an active plague disease surveillance and monitoring system.

Abstract

Resolving human–carnivore conflict is crucial for the sustainable coexistence of humans and wildlife. Achieving this, however, requires a comprehensive understanding of the causes and complexities associated with the conflict. This study aimed to assess the nature, underlying causes and costs of human–carnivore conflict, as well as the conservation challenges and potential mitigation measures in and around Kafta Sheraro National Park, Ethiopia. In 2020, we conducted 210 questionnaire interviews with villagers surrounding the park. The surveys gathered data on respondents' reports of carnivore depredation, the extent and patterns of human–carnivore conflicts, incidents of carnivore killings, the economic impact of livestock depredation, threats to wildlife conservation, potential traditional mitigation measures for human–carnivore conflicts, and their socio‐economic characteristics. A logistic regression model was used to identify factors contributing to livestock depredation. Seventy‐one percent of respondents reported conflict with carnivore species in the 5 years preceding the study. A total of 1390 heads of stock were reported killed by carnivore species, resulting in an economic loss of US$ 170,741. Spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) were responsible for most livestock depredation (37.8%), followed by leopards (Panthera pardus) (29.5%), caracals (Felis caracal) (8%), and common jackals (Canis aureus) (7.3%). Spotted hyenas killed all types of livestock [cattle (Bos taurus), goat (Capra hircus), sheep (Ovis aries), and donkey (Equus asinus)] across all the studied villages, while leopards, caracals, and jackals primarily targeted goats and sheep. Our findings indicated that most livestock depredations occurred at night and during the dry season. Although villagers employed several mitigation measures to prevent carnivore attacks, vigilance and bush fences were reported as the most effective methods. The study also revealed that agricultural land expansion and human settlements are major threats to wildlife conservation. Approximately 75% of surveyed households admitted to retaliatory killings of carnivore species in direct response to livestock losses. The study suggests that effective conflict mitigation and community conservation education should incorporate strategies to promote sustainable wildlife conservation and rural development. Abstract

Apiculture has great potential to enhance food security in rural communities. Global hunger has increased, human population continues to grow and communal people are exposed to hunger and malnutrition. The main purpose of the study was to assess the extent and contribution of apiculture to the food security and livelihood of the beekeepers in the Nyamakate communal area. Purposive random sampling was used to select the 55 beekeepers and the face-to-face interview was carried out between March and December 2018. Results showed that farmers ventured into beekeeping to ensure food security (62%, n = 34) with (33%, n = 18) for income generation and (5%, n = 3) as a hobby. The majority of beekeepers (63%, n = 35) earn between US$1 to US$10 per month. There was no significant relationship observed between the number of honeybee colonies and farm size (ha) (χ2 = 3.29 d.f = 1, p =.070). The study concluded that there is a need to capacitate beekeepers and increase extension services on beekeeping to improve honey production. It is recommended that extension services need to be increased to encourage the adoption of new methods of beekeeping to increase honey production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study assessed the nature and local people's perceptions of human-crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) conflicts (HCCs) for the period 2007 to 2016 in Kariba town, northern Zimbabwe. A mixed-method approach was used with 150 local fish folks interviewed between July and October 2017 through face-to-face interviews and secondary data on HCC were retrieved from the wildlife authority's records. In contrast to the general perception from fish folks that there was an increase in HCC, secondary data analysis showed no significant trends of crocodile attacks on people for the period under study. HCC was mainly driven by fishing activities which exposed people to crocodile attacks. The study concludes that despite the recorded non-increasing trend in HCCs, HCC is a major conservation issue in Kariba town given enhanced human–wildlife interactions due to the economic needs for local livelihoods. Abstract

This study analysed the influence of coordinated wildlife-based tourism marketing mix strategies towards improving the tourism performance of Zimbabwe. The study used a positivism-based research design with a crosssectional survey and a quota sample size of 411 (137 stakeholders and 274 tourists). The results indicated that the top five (5) high-performance areas of coordinated wildlife-based tourism marketing mix strategies were product mix, place mix, physical evidence mix, people mix and price mix in order of strength. The results also showed that the coordinated wildlife-based tourism marketing mix strategies had a positive impact on various tourism variables. The study concluded that: (i) the coordinated wildlife-based tourism marketing mix strategies performed higher than the average level, and (ii) there was a strong relationship between tourists and stakeholders on their perceptions of the coordinated wildlife-based tourism marketing mix strategies of Zimbabwe. Wildlife industry organisations need to consider ensuring that the ranked marketing mix strategies are linked, networked, and coordinated with other players in the broad tourism in ways that attract, retain, and satisfy local and domestic tourists.
