- Abstract
Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) have recently emerged as valuable candidates for the realization of aesthetically pleasing solar windows for near-zero-energy consumption buildings. The growing demand by the building-integrated photovoltaic sector is urging the development of sustainable production methods that minimize the use of polluting organic solvents and hazardous materials, while still enabling industrial-grade LSCs. Here, we introduce a new class of benzothieno-benzothiophene (BTBT) derivatives as highly efficient reabsorption-free emitters for transparent LSCs featuring high stability and a solvent-free chemical access with sustainability factor as low as 21, 10 to 50 times lower than conventional LSC emitters. By embedding our BTBT emitters in optical-grade polymeric waveguides, we produced large-area (40 cm × 40 cm) LSCs with optical power efficiency as high as 3% (corresponding to an optical quantum efficiency of 54%). These results represent an important advancement toward sustainable solar glazing systems for green architecture. The growing demand for building-integrated photovoltaic technologies for near-zero-energy buildings is motivating the scientific community to develop devices that meet the functional, energetic, and aesthetic needs for sustainable architecture. Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) are emerging as valuable solutions to realize aesthetically pleasing semitransparent photovoltaic windows capable of converting urban buildings into energy generators. In this work, we report on efficient, transparent LSCs based on a novel class of reabsorption-free derivatives synthesized through a solvent-free route that massively improves the sustainability factor with respect to the state of the art. Optical-grade polymeric LSCs are produced via industrial methods with an optical power efficiency as high as 3% despite their transparency in the visible region. - Abstract
Lead halide perovskites, owing to their flexible, scalable chemistry and promising physical properties are attracting increasing attention for solution-processed optoelectronic and photonic technologies. Despite their well-known 'defect tolerant' electronic structure, studies highlighted the active role of shallow and deep defect states, as well as of oxidative environmental conditions, on the optical and electrical behavior of perovskite nanocubes, films and single bulk crystals. To date, however, no in-depth systematic study of the surface trap-mediated processes in perovskite materials of different dimensionality has been conducted. In this work, we aim to bridge this gap by using O 2 as a molecular probe for the effects of surface states on the exciton recombination processes of nanocubes (NCs), nanowires (NWs), nanosheets (NSs) and bulk single crystals (SCs) of CsPbBr 3 perovskite. Continuous wave and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) experiments in a controlled O 2 atmosphere reveal the opposite optical response of NCs with respect to higher dimensional perovskites directly deriving from the different nature of the material surfaces. Specifically, O 2 passivates surface hole-traps in NWs, NSs and SCs, leading to PL brightening with unaltered recombination dynamics. Conversely, NCs appear to be free from such surface hole-traps and exposure to O 2 leads to direct extraction of photogenerated electrons that competes with radiative exciton recombination, leading to dimmed PL efficiency in atmospheric conditions. This opposite oxygen PL response demystifies the critical role of surface passivation in perovskite NCs in stark contrast to higher dimensional nanostructures and single crystals.

Lysine-specific methyltransferase 2A (KMT2A) is responsible for methylation of histone H3 (K4H3me) and contributes to chromatin remodeling, acting as “writer” of the epigenetic machinery. Mutations in KMT2A were first reported in Wiedemann–Steiner syndrome (WDSTS). More recently, KMT2A variants have been described in probands with a specific clinical diagnosis comprised in the so-called chromatinopathies. Such conditions, including WDSTS, are a group of overlapping disorders caused by mutations in genes coding for the epigenetic machinery. Among them, Rubinstein–Taybi syndrome (RSTS) is mainly caused by heterozygous pathogenic variants in CREBBP or EP300. In this work, we used next generation sequencing (either by custom-made panel or by whole exome) to identify alternative causative genes in individuals with a RSTS-like phenotype negative to CREBBP and EP300 mutational screening. In six patients we identified different novel unreported variants in KMT2A gene. The identified variants are de novo in at least four out of six tested individuals and all of them display some typical RSTS phenotypic features but also WDSTS specific signs. This study reinforces the concept that germline variants affecting the epigenetic machinery lead to a shared molecular effect (alteration of the chromatin state) determining superimposable clinical conditions.

- Abstract
Background: Socio-economic inequalities in mortality are well established, yet the contribution of intermediate risk factors that may underlie these relationships remains unclear. We evaluated the role of multiple modifiable intermediate risk factors underlying socio- economic-associated mortality and quantified the potential impact of reducing early allcause mortality by hypothetically altering socio-economic risk factors. Method(s): Data were from seven cohort studies participating in the LIFEPATH Consortium (total n 179 090). Using both socio-economic position (SEP) (based on occupation) and education, we estimated the natural direct effect on all-cause mortality and the natural indirect effect via the joint mediating role of smoking, alcohol intake, dietary patterns, physical activity, body mass index, hypertension, diabetes and coronary artery disease. Hazard ratios (HRs) were estimated, using counterfactual natural effect models under different hypothetical actions of either lower or higher SEP or education. Result(s): Lower SEP and education were associated with an increase in all-cause mortality within an average follow-up time of 17.5 years. Mortality was reduced via modelled hypothetical actions of increasing SEP or education. Through higher education, the HR was 0.85 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.84, 0.86] for women and 0.71 (95% CI 0.70, 0.74) for men, compared with lower education. In addition, 34% and 38% of the effect was jointly mediated for women and men, respectively. The benefits from altering SEP were slightly more modest. Conclusion(s): These observational findings support policies to reduce mortality both through improving socio-economic circumstances and increasing education, and by altering intermediaries, such as lifestyle behaviours and morbidities.Copyright © The Author(s) 2019.

Summary: Background: Intestinal pathologies caused by adhesions or fibrous bands in the absence of previous abdominal surgery have been reported in humans but rarely in horses. Objectives: To describe the clinical and surgical features of acute colic in horses caused by adhesions or fibrous bands in the absence of previous abdominal surgery. Study design: Retrospective case series. Methods: Records of horses that underwent exploratory laparotomy at the University of Turin VTH between 2012 and 2019 were reviewed. Clinical and surgical features of cases diagnosed with adhesions or fibrous bands as the primary cause of colic were retrieved, excluding those that had a history of previous abdominal surgery, either for gastrointestinal or urogenital problems. Results: Nine out of 293 horses which underwent exploratory laparotomy between 2012 and 2019 met the inclusion criteria for the study. In three cases, the adhesion involved the omentum (and the caecal apex, mesojejunum or mesocolon). In one case, a fibrous band 3–4 cm long running across the mesojejunum parallel to the small intestine strangled a loop of small intestine. In the remaining cases, the adhesion involved the left colon. Of these, two were geldings and the adhesion involved the internal inguinal ring region. Both had funiculitis after castration. The others were mares, and in one of them the adhesion was at the level of a small hernia in the left lateral abdominal wall. Main limitations: Small number of cases. Conclusions: This is the first case series of surgical colic caused by adhesions in a virgin abdomen. In horses, abdominal adhesions in the absence of previous abdominal trauma may be a cause of colic. Parturition, colon displacement and castration may be predisposing factors for the formation of intra‐abdominal adhesions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Ternary I-III-VI2 nanocrystals (NCs), such as CuInS2, are receiving attention as heavy-metals-free materials for solar cells, luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs), LEDs, and bio-imaging. The origin of the optical properties of CuInS2 NCs are however not fully understood. A recent theoretical model suggests that their characteristic Stokes-shifted and long-lived luminescence arises from the structure of the valence band (VB) and predicts distinctive optical behaviours in defect-free NCs: the quadratic dependence of the radiative decay rate and the Stokes shift on the NC radius. If confirmed, this would have crucial implications for LSCs as the solar spectral coverage ensured by low-bandgap NCs would be accompanied by increased re-absorption losses. Here, by studying stoichiometric CuInS2 NCs, it is revealed for the first time the spectroscopic signatures predicted for the free band-edge exciton, thus supporting the VB-structure model. At very low temperatures, the NCs also show dark-state emission likely originating from enhanced electron-hole spin interaction. The impact of the observed optical behaviours on LSCs is evaluated by Monte Carlo ray-tracing simulations. Based on the emerging device design guidelines, optical-grade large-area (30×30 cm2) LSCs with optical power efficiency (OPE) as high as 6.8% are fabricated, corresponding to the highest value reported to date for large-area devices.

This study is part of the health surveillance system set up with the construction of a waste-to-energy (WTE) plant in Turin (Italy). Circulatory and respiratory diseases in emergency room (ER) accesses and first hospital admissions were considered. Main concerns of population living in the area near WTE were to know whether single and repeated peaks in emissions would correspond to adverse health effects. We tackle this issue using spatio-temporal analyses, comparing an exposed group (EXP) living near the WTE with a reference group (NOEXP). Age-standardized rates of ER accesses between EXP and NOEXP were temporally compared, testing whether there have been significantly different changes over time. We also examined the relationship between emission peaks and ER accesses in the following days. Finally, with time-series analysis, we investigated variations in ER accesses and pollutants before and after WTE start-up. No significant relationship has been found for the outcome considered. Summary: The current hypothesis proposed for strangulation of small intestine by a pedunculated lipoma in horses involves movement of the lipoma around the small intestine until it loops through its own pedicle. This mechanism is difficult to demonstrate during surgical correction. The objective was to examine an alternative explanation for strangulation by pedunculated lipomas that is logical and consistent with intraoperative findings by the analysis of the anatomical features of 11 cases of lipoma strangulation in horses. In the proposed hypothesis, the stalk of the lipoma is tensed by the weight of the lipoma alone or by external forces on it from adjacent intestine. This produces a slit‐like aperture formed by the stalk and the contiguous mesentery. One or more loops of intestine pass across the lateral edge of the stalk before turning into this aperture, either because of lack of space in the abdominal cavity or through the effects of peristalsis. The weight of the intestine itself causes the loop to 'fall' into the aperture and become entrapped. This creates a half‐hitch knot in which the loop of intestine uses the lipoma pedicle as a 'post' around which it becomes strangulated. It was concluded that the proposed hypothesis differs from the existing one by requiring intestinal movement to create the strangulation, which is more plausible than the current proposal that the strangulation is caused by movement of the lipoma itself. It is also more consistent with surgical findings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Source at https://doi.org/10.18632/aging.101900. Differences in health status by socioeconomic position (SEP) tend to be more evident at older ages, suggesting the involvement of a biological mechanism responsive to the accumulation of deleterious exposures across the lifespan. DNA methylation (DNAm) has been proposed as a biomarker of biological aging that conserves memory of endogenous and exogenous stress during life. We examined the association of education level, as an indicator of SEP, and lifestyle-related variables with four biomarkers of age-dependent DNAm dysregulation: the total number of stochastic epigenetic mutations (SEMs) and three epigenetic clocks (Horvath, Hannum and Levine), in 18 cohorts spanning 12 countries. The four biological aging biomarkers were associated with education and different sets of risk factors independently, and the magnitude of the effects differed depending on the biomarker and the predictor. On average, the effect of low education on epigenetic aging was comparable with those of other lifestyle-related risk factors (obesity, alcohol intake), with the exception of smoking, which had a significantly stronger effect. Our study shows that low education is an independent predictor of accelerated biological (epigenetic) aging and that epigenetic clocks appear to be good candidates for disentangling the biological pathways underlying social inequalities in healthy aging and longevity.

Background: Evidence on the association between short-term exposure to desert dust and health outcomes is controversial. Objectives: We aimed to estimate the short-term effects of particulate matter ≤ 10 μm (PM10) on mortality and hospital admissions in 13 Southern European cities, distinguishing between PM10 originating from the desert and from other sources. Methods: We identified desert dust advection days in multiple Mediterranean areas for 2001–2010 by combining modeling tools, back-trajectories, and satellite data. For each advection day, we estimated PM10 concentrations originating from desert, and computed PM10 from other sources by difference. We fitted city-specific Poisson regression models to estimate the association between PM from different sources (desert and non-desert) and daily mortality and emergency hospitalizations. Finally, we pooled city-specific results in a random-effects meta-analysis. Results: On average, 15% of days were affected by desert dust at ground level (desert PM10 > 0 μg/m3). Most episodes occurred in spring–summer, with increasing gradient of both frequency and intensity north–south and west–east of the Mediterranean basin. We found significant associations of both PM10 concentrations with mortality. Increases of 10 μg/m3 in non-desert and desert PM10 (lag 0–1 days) were associated with increases in natural mortality of 0.55% (95% CI: 0.24, 0.87%) and 0.65% (95% CI: 0.24, 1.06%), respectively. Similar associations were estimated for cardio-respiratory mortality and hospital admissions. Conclusions: PM10 originating from the desert was positively associated with mortality and hospitalizations in Southern Europe. Policy measures should aim at reducing population exposure to anthropogenic airborne particles even in areas with large contribution from desert dust advections. © 2016, Public Health Services, US Dept of Health and Human Services. - Abstract
BACKGROUND: Social inequalities in the prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity are well-established, but less is known about when the social gradient first emerges and how it evolves across childhood and adolescence. OBJECTIVE: This study examines maternal education differentials in children's body mass trajectories in infancy, childhood and adolescence using data from four contemporary European child cohorts. METHODS: Prospective data on children's body mass index (BMI) were obtained from four cohort studies-Generation XXI (G21-Portugal), Growing Up in Ireland (GUI) infant and child cohorts, and the Millennium Cohort Study (MCS-UK)-involving a total sample of 41,399 children and 120,140 observations. Children's BMI trajectories were modelled by maternal education level using mixed-effect models. RESULTS: Maternal educational inequalities in children's BMI were evident as early as three years of age. Children from lower maternal educational backgrounds were characterised by accelerated BMI growth, and the extent of the disparity was such that boys from primary-educated backgrounds measured 0.42 kg/m2 (95% CI 0.24, 0.60) heavier at 7 years of age in G21, 0.90 kg/m2 (95% CI 0.60, 1.19) heavier at 13 years of age in GUI and 0.75 kg/m2 (95% CI 0.52, 0.97) heavier in MCS at 14 years of age. The corresponding figures for girls were 0.71 kg/m2 (95% CI 0.50, 0.91), 1.31 kg/m2 (95% CI 1.00, 1.62) and 0.76 kg/m2 (95% CI 0.53, 1.00) in G21, GUI and MCS, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Maternal education is a strong predictor of BMI across European nations. Socio-economic differentials emerge early and widen across childhood, highlighting the need for early intervention.
