BackgroundWork-life balance is associated with health behaviors. In the face of digitalization, understanding this link requires a theory-based investigation of problematic internet use and perceived stress, which are so far unknown. ObjectiveOn the basis of the compensatory carry-over action model, this study aimed to determine whether problematic internet use and perceived stress mediate the relationship between health behaviors and work-life balance in two groups of internet users from different environments (residents in Germany and China). We also investigated whether the place of residence was a moderator. MethodsAn online questionnaire (N=877) was administered to residents from Germany (n=374) and China (n=503) in 3 languages (German, English, and Chinese). Moderated mediation analyses were run with health behaviors as the independent variable, work-life balance as the dependent variable, problematic internet use and perceived stress as the mediator variables, and place of residence as a potential moderator. ResultsOn a mean level, individuals in Germany reported less problematic internet use and more health behaviors than individuals in China; however, they also had lower work-life balance and higher perceived stress. Results showed that health behaviors seem to be directly related to work-life balance in both groups. Among the residents of Germany, a partial mediation was revealed (β=.13; P=.01), whereas among the residents of China, a full mediation was found (β=.02; P=.61). The mediator role of perceived stress was compared with problematic internet use in all the serial models and the parallel model. To explore the curvilinear relationship between early stressful life events and future-oriented coping and whether the "HOMER1" (rs7713917) polymorphism can moderate the relationship between early life stress and two types of future-oriented coping, 14,675 Han Chinese people were surveyed. The relationship between the number of early stressful life events and future-oriented coping adhered to a quadratic curve. "HOMER1" polymorphisms moderated the relationship between the impact of early life stress and preventive coping ([beta] = -0.02, 95% CI [-0.03, -0.01], p = 0.010), which was different from that of proactive coping ([beta] = -0.01, 95% CI [-0.02, 0.01], p = 0.073). Individuals with the AA genotype who experienced a high impact of early life stress were more likely to use preventive coping compared with those who experienced a low level of early life stress, but they showed no difference in their proactive coping strategies. In contrast, individuals with the GA/GG genotype displayed higher vulnerability to environmental changes.

The present study examined whether future orientation can regulate emotions and benefit performance among employees and students and tested the mediation effect of planning in certain processes. In Study 1, a 3-wave assessment of future orientation, job burnout, and job engagement was conducted with 180 participants. Results showed that future orientation is positively related to job engagement, but negatively related to job burnout. In addition, planning serves as a mediator in the relationship between future orientation and job engagement and between future orientation and job burnout. In Study 2, 193 participants completed scales measuring the effects of future orientation, planning, task completion, and mood. Results showed that planning serves as a mediator in the relationship between future orientation and positive affect, between future orientation and negative affect, and between future orientation and academic performance. This research provides evidence that future orientation prepares individuals to successfully cope with stress through problem-solving strategies. Future orientation tends to prevent engagement in risk behaviours and results in good academic performance among adolescents. Our study aimed to establish whether genetic factors contributed to future orientation among Chinese adolescents. We recruited 988 pairs of twins from Beijing. By constructing a high-order A (additive genetic variance) C (common environmental variance) E (unique environmental variance) model, we found that heritability and a common environment contributed significantly to the development of future orientation among adolescents. Moreover, this study did not detect significant heritability differences in future orientation between girls and boys. In addition, there was a negative relationship between age and heritability of future orientation but a positive relationship between age and non-shared environmental effect on the development of future orientation. Our findings provide empirical evidence for the heritability of future orientation, suggesting that both genetics and common environment influence its development.

Evaluating interventions to improve the mental health among university students in China is a critical priority. Depression, compared to other psychological problems, is one of the most commonly occurring disorders and is associated with school-related impairment and risk of suicide. The aim of the current study is to obtain estimates for design of future definitive trial and obtain preliminary evidence of the effect of a computerized positive mental imagery training intervention, which consisted of 8 sessions delivered across 4 weeks. Participants use ambiguous cues to generate positive scenarios repeatedly from a first-person perspective. In the current study, the BDI-II, PANAS, and RRS were measured at baseline, post-training, and 4-week follow-up. Forty-one participants were non-randomly assigned to either the intervention training group (n = 22) or wait-list (n = 19). Results showed an attrition rate for interventional group was 20%. In addition, group x time interaction for depressive symptoms, positive and negative affect, and rumination, with the intervention group demonstrated better outcomes than controls across time. The largest treatment gains and clinically significant improvements were observed at follow-up. Positive mental imagery training was successfully tested with an acceptable attrition rate. Preliminary results showed that it improved Chinese university students' depressive symptoms, mood, and maladaptive thinking style. Lacustrine groundwater discharge (LGD) is a vital water and solute source for lakes. However, the understanding of the long‐term temporal variability of LGD remains limited owing to insufficient insights into driving mechanisms, such as climatic and hydrologic changes. In this study, we examined the oxbow lake group in the central Yangtze River (YR) and assessed the LGD rates from 2000 to 2022 using 222Rn combined with meteorological and hydrological data. The findings revealed that groundwater was recharged during the wet season and discharged to the lakes during the dry season. We established a mathematical model to link the LGD rates to the meteorological and hydrological factors of the lakes, which accounted for 98.70% of the LGD rate variance. Using a predictive model combined with meteorological and hydrological data to assess the LGD rate over the past two decades, it was found that in wet years with higher precipitation and higher average YR water levels, the LGD rate was higher. The gradual increase in precipitation during the rising water and wet seasons, along with a slow rise in the YR water levels, will cause the LGD rate to exhibit a slightly increasing trend with fluctuations in the future. This study proposed an innovative approach to investigate the long‐term temporal variation in LGD and identify the weather and hydrological influences on LGD. However, long‐term temporal variability of LGD is poorly understood due to limited knowledge of driving mechanisms such as climatic and hydrologic change. In this study, we focused on the oxbow lake group within central Yangtze River, and estimated LGD rates from 2000 to 2022 with meteorological and hydrological data. A mathematical model is established to correlate the LGD rates with meteorological and hydrological factors of the lakes. The simulated LGD rates in 2000–2022 show that the years with higher precipitation and higher water levels in the Yangtze River correspond to larger LGD rates. Additionally, future prediction suggests continuously increasing LGD rates. This study introduces an innovative approach to explore LGD's long‐term temporal variability and identifies the regulation of weather and hydrology on LGD.
