2. Synthesis of Ni decorated MoOx nanorod catalysts for efficient overall urea–water splitting.

Abstract

Substituting slow oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with thermodynamically favorable urea oxidation reaction (UOR) is considered as one of the feasible strategies for achieving energy-saving hydrogen production. Herein, a uniform layer of NiMoO4 nanorods was grown on nickel foam by a hydrothermal method. Then, a series of Ni-MoOx/NF-X nanorod catalysts comprising Ni/NiO and MoOx (MoO2/MoO3) were prepared through regulating annealing atmosphere and reduction temperature. The optimized Ni-MoOx/NF-3 with a large accessible specific area can act as a bifunctional catalyst for electrocatalytic anodic UOR and cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). At a current density of 100 mA cm−2, the introduction of urea can significantly reduce the overpotential of Ni-MoOx/NF-3 by 210 mV compared to OER. In addition, Ni-MoOx/NF-3 has a higher intrinsic activity than other catalysts. It only requires −0.21 and 1.38 V to reach 100 mA cm−2 in HER and UOR, respectively. Such an excellent performance can be attributed to the synergistic function between Ni and MoOx. The presence of metallic Ni and reduced MoOx in pairs is beneficial for improving the electrical conductivity and modulating the electronic structure, resulting in enhancing the electrocatalytic performance. When assembling Ni-MoOx/NF-3 into an overall urea–water splitting system, it can achieve energy-saving hydrogen production and effective removal of urea-rich wastewater. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In bulk semiconductor materials, the insulator-metal transition (IMT) is governed by the concentration of conduction electrons. Meanwhile, even when fabricated from metallic building blocks, nanocrystal films are often insulating with inter-nanocrystal contacts acting as electron transport bottlenecks. Using a library of transparent conducting tin-doped indium oxide nanocrystal films with varied electron concentration, size, and contact area, we test candidate criteria for the IMT and establish a phase diagram for electron transport behavior. From variable temperature conductivity measurements, we learn that both the IMT and a subsequent crossover to conventional metallic behavior near room temperature are governed by the conductance of the inter-nanocrystal contacts. To cross the IMT, inter-nanocrystal coupling must be sufficient to overcome the charging energy of a nanocrystal, while conventional metallic behavior requires contact conductance to reach the conductance of a nanocrystal. Abstract

The potential of public parks being able to promote mental and physical health of the public is widely discussed in recent years. However, the report for public park issues becomes a norm too. One of the issues being debated is the maintenance drawback in Malaysian public parks, implicating underutilisation of the parks. To address the issue, this paper aims to examine the maintenance priority towards public park’s features and facilities in Malaysia by considering the park visitors’ expectation and demand. A questionnaire survey was distributed to the park users and visitors with 1658 valid questionnaire responses. A mean analysis was performed to rank the maintenance of park features and facilities in both visitors’ perspective and actual experience. Subsequently, Wilcoxon signed-rank test was deployed to examine the difference between visitors’ perspective and actual experience towards maintenance of the park features and facilities. The findings determine ten park features and facilities that should be prioritised in respect to their maintenance. Furthermore, it is proven that significant difference occurs between visitors’ perspective and actual experience towards all park features and facilities. As a result, the study confirms the need of improving the park maintenance process and recommends the introduction of maintenance prioritisation towards the park features and facilities.

17. The optimization design of Piled raft foundation for substation building in US code

Abstract

In order to get a more safety and economic foundation, finite element method was performed for a piled mat cap and piled strip cap by the software of STAAD. Through the finite element analysis, plate distribution region of bending moment and shear stress were researched; meanwhile, considering the compatibility of deformation of element plate, how to chose the design value of plate stress was researched. The result showed that: single plate value is not representative, average of value of 9 plates (3x3 array) is close to the fact. Strip cap is better than mat cap both from the moment value and shear value of plate element in this project; strip cap was recommended due to its remarkable economic benefit.

Abstract

Background 'Gold Finger' is a grape cultivar with a finger-like shape and a milk flavor. The process by which its aroma profile evolves during ripening is unclear. Thus, changes in the free and bound volatile compounds present in 'Gold Finger' grapes during ripening were investigated using headspace sampling-solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (HS-SPME-GC-MS). Results A total of 83 volatile aroma components were identified in the grapes, with aldehydes, esters, acids, and alcohols being the main components. The total aroma compound content exhibited significant differences between the bound and free forms. The total content of bound volatile compounds did not change significantly during fruit development, although the free aroma compound content was significantly higher than the bound content. The total content of free aldehydes, free alcohols, bound norisoprenoids, and ketones gradually increased for up to 70 days after flowering (DAF), while the total free ester, terpene, and acid content decreased. The characteristic aroma compounds of 'Gold Finger' grapes were identified as hexanal, (E)-2-hexenal, and ethyl hexanoate. Conclusions These results give a foundation for the further development of 'Gold Finger' grapes and provide a theoretical basis for the selection and breeding of novel aromatic grape varieties. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

30. Understanding the Emergence, Tunability, and Performance of Plasmonic Copper Selenide Semiconductor Nanoparticles

Abstract

The phenomena of localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) has been broadly studied and is a property of nanomaterials that can be used to enhance or enable a wide variety of technologies including cancer treatment, light-driven catalysis, and ultrasensitive detection. While most widely-observed and studied in noble metal nanomaterials, there is significant interest in earth-abundant plasmonic materials. However, whether or not their performance can match or even surpass their noble metal counterparts remains to be established. An important first step in determining the extent of their versatility is to understand basic aspects of their plasmonic features. We first synthesize and demonstrate the LSPR energy tunability of air-stable degenerately doped copper selenide (Cu2Se) NPs (Chapter 2.0). We quantitatively access the LSPR and correlate its spectral features with changes in the nanoparticle structure that can be controlled chemically. Our next step is to understand the surface chemistry of Cu2Se NPs, which clarifies the site of potential catalytic behavior (Chapter 3.0). We then establish their molar extinction coefficient, which is an important readout for the LSPR intensity and showcases our ability to control such intensity with NP size (Chapter 4.0). Importantly, we determine that size-dependent increases in molar extinction coefficients behave much like their noble metal analogues, as the trend mimics the Mie theory predictions. In Chapter 5.0, we demonstrate the first plasmon-driven chemical conversion on the surface of this new plasmonic material class. Finally, we establish a reaction-insensitive, material-specific design rule to prepare multicomponent nanostructures starting from Cu2Se (Chapter 6.0). Taken together, these results give a promising outlook towards rational designs and implementations of technology-relevant and earth-abundant materials.

49. Genome sequence and annotation of <italic>Sporolactobacillus pectinivorans</italic> GD201205 T, a lactic acid-producing bacterium.

Abstract

The novel species Sporolactobacillus pectinivorans GD201205T can produce lactic acid and aromatic compounds such as isoamyl acetate and phenethyl acetate. To characterize this strain, we sequenced the whole genome of S. pectinivorans GD201205T and determined that it contains a 3,926,837-bp chromosome with a GC content of 44.27%, 4320 genes, 64 tRNAs, 14 rRNAs, and four sRNAs. The identification of the gene sequence of S. pectinivorans GD201205T provides a basis for understanding its molecular genetics and features, which in turn will facilitate its potential application as a starter culture in the food processing industry.
