Background: Childhood undernutrition remains a public health issue that can lead to unfavourable effects in later life. These effects tend to be more devastating among urban poor young children, especially in light of the recent COVID-19 pandemic. There is an immediate need to introduce interventions to reduce childhood undernutrition. This paper described the study protocol of a nutrition programme that was developed based on the positive deviance approach and the evaluation of the effectiveness of the programme among urban poor children aged 3 to 5 years old. Methods: This mixed-method study will be conducted in two phases at low-cost flats in Kuala Lumpur. Phase one will involve a focus group discussion with semi-structured interviews to explore maternal feeding practices and the types of food fed to the children. Phase two will involve a two-armed cluster randomised controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of a programme developed based on the positive deviance approach. The programme will consist of educational lessons with peer-led cooking demonstrations, rehabilitation, and growth monitoring sessions. Intervention group will participate in the programme conducted by the researcher for three months whereas the comparison group will only receive all the education materials and menus used in the programme after data collection has been completed. For both groups, data including height, weight, and dietary intake of children as well as the nutritional knowledge and food security status of mothers will be collected at baseline, immediate post-intervention, and 3-month post-intervention. Expected results: The positive deviance approach helps to recognise the common feeding practices and the local wisdom unique to the urban poor population. Through this programme, mothers may learn from and be empowered by their peers to adopt new feeding behaviours so that their children can achieve healthy weight gain.

Insufficient physical activity is a common problem for university students because they may engage in sedentary lifestyle owing to excessive time spent on their smartphones and social media use. This may result in problematic internet use (PIU) and nomophobia (fear of not having a mobile phone). Moreover, prior evidence shows that weight-related self-stigma is an important factor contributing to low physical activity. Therefore, the present study examined the associations between PIU, nomophobia, and physical activity among university students across mainland China, Taiwan, and Malaysia. Participants (3135 mainland Chinese, 600 Taiwanese, and 622 Malaysian) completed the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS), Smartphone Application-Based Addiction Scale (SABAS), Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMPQ), Weight Self-Stigma Questionnaire (WSSQ), and International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form (IPAQ-SF). The measurement invariance of the assessed questionnaires was supported across the three regions. The present findings analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling showed that (i) greater nomophobia was associated with higher levels of physical activity, (ii) greater weight-related self-stigma was associated with higher levels of physical activity, and (iii) greater nomophobia was associated with greater weight-related self-stigma. Although the present findings suggest the possibility that experiencing some level of nomophobia or weight-related self-stigma appears to help improve physical activity, it is not recommended that these be encouraged, but reducing PIU should be targeted as a means to improve physical activity.

Introduction: Obesity is recognized as a serious public health threat. Recent evidence has warned of the alarming rise in the prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity throughout the world. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity, and its associations with socio-demographic, behavioral, and psychosocial factors among school-going adolescents in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan. Methods: Cross-sectional study was conducted. A total of 2,221 adolescents were randomly selected from eight secondary schools. A questionnaire was administered to assess socio-demographic profiles, meal patterns, physical activity level, self-efficacy, self-esteem, body size satisfaction, perception of body weight status, depression, anxiety, stress, and nutrition knowledge. Bodyweight and height were measured and BMI-for-age z scores were computed to determine the body weight status. Bivariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression were used for the data analysis. Results: The prevalence of overweight among the participants in this study was 17.0%, while the prevalence of obesity was 14.9%. The significant predictors of overweight and obesity in this study were breakfast skipping, low physical activity level, low self-efficacy scores in terms of healthy eating, weight and physical activity, body dissatisfaction, and perception of large body size. Conclusion: The results emphasize the need to broaden the scope of nutrition guidelines, public health policies, and programs to address overweight and obesity among adolescents in Malaysia. The findings also suggest that health education programs should cover practical advice for modifying healthy eating behaviors, increasing physical activity, as well as matters on body image and body satisfaction.

Background: The microbiota plays a key role in early immunity maturation that affects infant health and is associated with the development of non-communicable diseases and allergies in later life. Objective: The MYBIOTA is a prospective mother-infant cohort study in Malaysia aiming to determine the association between gut microbiota with infant health (temperament, gastrointestinal disorders, eczema, asthma, and developmental delays) in Selangor, Malaysia. Methods: Pregnant mothers will be enrolled in their first trimester of pregnancy, and follow-ups will be done for infants during their first year of life. Maternal-infant biological samples (blood, feces, saliva, urine, and breast milk), anthropometric, dietary, and clinical information will be collected at different time points from early pregnancy to 12 months postpartum. Discussion: This study could provide a better understanding of the colonization and development of the gut microbiome during early life and its impact on infant health. The present study evaluated the psychometric properties of four instruments related to internet use, namely the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS), Smartphone Application-Based Addiction Scale (SABAS), (nine-item) Internet Gaming Disorder Scale Short Form (IGDS9-SF), and Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMPQ) as well as their associations with psychological distress among Malaysian university students. A total of 380 Malaysian university students (71.6% females, mean age 24.0 years) were recruited through convenience sampling and completed an online survey including questions concerning socio-demographic background, social media addiction, smartphone addiction, internet gaming disorder, and nomophobia. Confirmatory factor analysis and Rasch analysis were applied to evaluate the psychometric properties of the instruments and Cronbach’s alpha value and McDonald’s omega value were used to confirm the internal consistency reliability of the instruments. The unidimensional structure was confirmed for the BSMAS, SABAS, and IGDS9-SF while the four-factor structure was confirmed for NMPQ. All instruments showed good internal consistency reliability. Promising validity and reliability were confirmed for BSMAS, SABAS, IGDS9-SF, and NMPQ. Therefore, they are useful to assess different types of problematic internet use among university students in Malaysia. Furthermore, a significant association was observed between internet use and psychological distress. The present study is the first to investigate the validity and reliability of BSMAS, SABAS, IGDS9-SF, and NMPQ among Malaysian university students using rigorous psychometric testing methods (i.e., Rasch analysis).

The Lost Food Project (TLFP) is a non-profit organization who continuously working on their strategic plan in combating the food insecurity problem by distributing food surplus to low income households within Klang Valley. This cross-sectional study aims to determine the socioeconomic status, food security status and its coping strategies among TLFP recipients in Klang Valley during COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This study was conducted from April to June 2021. There were 88 respondents recruited through convenience sampling. A set of questionnaires regarding food assistance, nutrition knowledge, food security and its coping strategies was prepared, and the respondents were interviewed either by phone, face-to-face or self-administered questionnaire. Results: The prevalence of food insecurity among households in this study was 59.1%. Most of them have moderate (37.5%) to good (27.5%) nutrition knowledge. The coping strategy that most of the respondents applied was ‘using less expensive food’ (58.3%) with at least once per week within the past one month. Food insecure households tend to adopt more coping strategies compared to those food secure households (p<0.001). Moreover, households who rent their house (p<0.01), low household income (p<0.05) and high monthly food and drinks expenditure (p<0.01) were associated with the food insecurity among TLFP recipients. Conclusion: The study concluded that lower household income, higher food and drinks expenditure and those who rent the house have negative impacts on household’s food security status. Thus, the situation forced them to apply more food-related coping strategies in their daily life. Further research should be conducted on the effectiveness of TLFP in helping them to improve Malaysian’s food security status.
