Mais depuis quelques décades, l'impact croissant de l'homme a provoqué une telle dégradation des milieux naturels et des populations d'animaux sauvages que beaucoup de nos concitoyens ont du mal à comprendre et accepter les prélèvements de gibiers par la chasse. La question de la prédation mérite donc d'être analysée, expliquée et discutée. En s'appuyant sur son expérience de chasseur-écologiste, l'auteur propose quelques pistes à tous ceux qui tentent de concilier l'inévitable rôle de prédation avec le maintien de notre précieux patrimoine faunistique.

Abstract

For centuries, criminologists have looked for scientific ways to study, understand, and ultimately prevent crime. In this volume, a unique offense, poaching, is explored in various contexts to determine what opportunity structures favor this crime and how situational crime prevention may reduce its prevalence. The data sources used range from publically available secondary data about animal populations, to interviews with hunters, to actual law enforcement data collected inside protected areas. Various methods are utilized to look for patterns in poaching behaviour regarding where poachers strike, which species they target and their modus operandi. Collectively, the volume shows that principles of criminal opportunity theory and situational crime prevention are useful for studying and preventing poaching in a variety of contexts. The methods employed by each chapter are easily replicated and meant to stimulate empirical poaching research where data is available. While the theoretical grounding of this volume is drawn from criminology, it is written for a broad audience of academics, practitioners and those interested in wildlife conservation.

6. Measuring the impact of an entertainment‐education intervention to reduce demand for bushmeat.

Abstract

Abstract: The trade and consumption of bushmeat are a major threat to biodiversity across the tropics. Conservationists have traditionally advocated for stricter regulation and enforcement as a way to control these practices, with less attention given to consumers and the management of the demand. Yet, it is clear that without adequately tackling demand, it is impossible to effectively curb the bushmeat trade. In this paper, we describe an intervention to reduce demand for bushmeat in northern Tanzania. The intervention was centered around the 1‐h radio show My Wildlife – My Community which included 15‐min episodes of the radio drama Temboni. Each episode of the radio drama was accompanied by a 45‐min interactive call‐in show featuring interviews with experts and local information about available community resources. We evaluated this intervention using a Before‐After‐Control‐Impact framework based on longitudinal data from 168 respondents. To account for the fact that respondents volunteered to be exposed to the intervention, in this case the radio show, we used a matching algorithm together with regression to ensure that we could build a credible counterfactual group. Our analysis did not uncover any differences in outcomes between the treatment and control groups, and thus no evidence of the intervention achieving its initial goals. One potential causal mechanism that could have led to this outcome is the low audience penetration rate. Fewer than 40% of respondents listened to the show and among those who did, only about 20% listened to five of more episodes. This research highlights the challenges of implementing and evaluating interventions delivered through mass media in developing countries, and the importance of reporting on interventions even when there is no evidence that they achieved their initial goals. Only through robust evaluation of behavior change interventions and the sharing of lessons learned can conservationists successfully tackle complex issues such as the bushmeat trade. 7. Use of soil chemical analysis to detect commercial wildlife game baits.

Abstract

Hunters and poachers often use commercially available, nutrient-rich baits to attract wildlife game animals. We used atomic absorption spectroscopy and ion selective electrochemical analysis techniques to determine whether 2 common proprietary baits (Deer Cane and Acorn Rage) would leave detectable chemical signatures in soil (i.e., Na+, Cl-, and Ca+2). Our goal was to evaluate low-cost tests that could be replicated by wildlife conservation officers in the field. To complete the evaluation, we randomly placed 2 commercial baits on 3 sites in the Millersville University Biological Preserve in Millersville, Pennsylvania, USA. We collected soil samples from each site over the course of 35 days after bait placement to conduct our soil chemical analysis. We found that baited soils consistently exhibited higher concentrations of Na+ and Cl- compared to control soils. The levels of Na+ on baited soils for the first 3 weeks for both bait sites averaged 3,209 ppm and 4,056 ppm, and these levels were substantially higher than average and median concentrations of Na+ found on wild natural lick sites in North America. The simple low-cost techniques we used to test baited soils, NaCl Insta-TEST strips and acetic acid test, proved effective in detecting the higher concentrations of Na+ and Cl-. These inexpensive field tests may provide wildlife conservation officers with a simple tool to verify the use of commercial wildlife baits in areas under investigation for illegal baiting. We recommend that future evaluations of commercial wildlife baits in soils include data on heavy rainfall events, soil type, bait placement, and duration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article examines the role of gamekeeping in counter-insurgency in Kenya and Rhodesia from 1952 to 1980. The efforts of gamekeepers to combat insurgency are explored which include hunting insurgents, recruitment of skilled African trackers, and development of security force training institutions. Also discussed are African colonial states' establishment of embryonic wildlife departments, conservation of animals, and security force tracker training schools.

75 Abstract This diploma thesis deals with Legal Adjustment of Gamekeeping. Gamekeeping is perceived not only as a hobby, but it is a phenomenon which became a lifestyle of many people. The main purpose of hunting is to protect and maintain freely living game for the future generations but at the same time ensure the environment protection. According to the importance of the environment protection and the game there is no doubt, that this issue requires its own legal adjustment. The adjustment has evolved over years and these days it is influenced by the globalization, membership in multinational communities and organizations and many others. In the introduction the term Gamekeeping is presented together with the reasons which make this topic current. In the first chapter the history of hunting is analysed heading towards the development of gamekeeping including the role of poaching during over the years. The second chapter is an important part of the thesis, it processes sources of the gamekeeping legislation. The international legislation related to many international contracts focused on component aspects of the environment protection is mentioned first.It is also necessary to deal with the legislation of the European Union, of which the Czech Republic is a member, in which the legislation is included...
