1. Identification of sex attractants for 6 North American click beetle species in 4 tribes of the Elateridae.

Abstract

We describe experiments that evaluated potential sex pheromone components for 6 North American click beetle species. In field trials in Illinois, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia, male beetles of 6 species were strongly attracted to geranyl butyrate (Agriotes insanus Candèze), 5-methylhexyl (Z)-4-decenoate (Elater abruptus Say), 11-dodecenyl butyrate (Melanotus ignobilis Melsheimer), and limoniic acid (Gambrinus griseus [Palisot de Beauvois], G. rudis [Brown], and G. plebejus [Say]). Collection of E. abruptus in South Carolina represents a new state record. For each species, capture rates varied geographically and temporally, possibly due to differences in local population densities and regional phenology, or the efficiency of different trap designs or trap placement. Structural similarities were observed between the tested attractants and previously identified pheromones of closely related species. For example, males of A. insanus were attracted to geranyl butyrate, analogous to the terpenoid ester pheromones of a number of European congeners. The attractant for E. abruptus, 5-methylhexyl (Z)-4-decenoate, is an analog of the pheromone of its European congener E. ferrugineus L., and the attractant for M. ignobilis, 11-dodecenyl butyrate, is an analog of attractants of European and Asian congeners. Attraction of the 3 Gambrinus species to limoniic acid parallels recent reports of attraction of the congeners G. seminudus (Van Dyke) and G. ursinus (Van Dyke) to this compound, which was originally identified from closely related species of Limonius. Full identifications of additional sex pheromones for elaterid species should provide a more complete picture of the diversities/similarities of the semiochemicals mediating reproductive behaviors of this biologically diverse and taxonomically complex group., (© The Author(s) 2024. Abstract

The goal of this master´s thesis is to analyse the perception of Gambrinus brand on the Czech beer market and on the basis of the analysis to formulate recommendations for the owners of the brand to maximize the brand value and improve the brand perception. The theoretical part of the thesis is to describe the brand in general, the strategic management of the brand and methods of the research. The practical part of the thesis is focused on the description of the Czech beer market with emphasis on Plzeňský Prazdroj group. In the next chapter Gambrinus brand is analysed in terms of values, marketing campaigns and the market position. The last chapter consists of quantitative and qualitative research with a goal of analysing the perception of Gambrinus brand on the Czech market. On the basis of the results of the research, the recommendations for the owners of the brand are made.

Abstract

This bachelors thesis concerns the marketing communication of the Gambrinus brand and is focused especially on consumer competitions between 2009-2010. With the help of the descriptive method this thesis is trying to show the look of the advertising campaigns of this brand, which has for a long time been holding first place in popularity and consumption in the Czech beer market. The introductory part shows the historical developments that contributed to building strong foundations of the brand, built on solid values and a progressive development of marketing activities. It introduces Gambrinus in terms of the portfolio of Plzeňský Prazdroj and shows its definition compared with the other brands, especially compared to the targeted groups. The core of this thesis introduces the consumer competitions, which took place during those 2 years. It shows their principles, gains and media campaigns that accompanied them. Lightly outlined the strengths and weaknesses of these competitions and it points out the fact that in principle all the competitions are the same. The conclusion of my thesis evaluates individual competitions and outlines which route Gambrinus should take, especially what could possibly be done to improve the competitions.
