1. Who Are We Measuring? Teacher Effects in Gifted and Talented Teacher Rating Scales

Abstract

Teacher rating scales (TRS) often play a part in service eligibility decisions for gifted services. Although schools regularly use TRS to identify gifted students either as part of an informal nomination process or through behavioral rating scales, there is little research documenting the between-teacher variance in teacher ratings and the consequences of such rater dependence. To evaluate the possible benefits or disadvantages of using TRS as part of a gifted identification process, we examined the student-, teacher-, and school-level variance in TRS, controlling for student ability and achievement to determine the unique information, consistency, and potential bias in TRS. Between 10% and 25% of a students' TRS score can be attributed to the teacher doing the rating, and between-teacher standard deviations represent an effect size of one-third to one-half standard deviation. Our results suggest that TRS are not easily comparable across teachers, making it impossible to set a cut score for admission into a program (or for further screening) that functions equitably across teachers.

We develop further the theory of monoidal bicategories by introducing and studying bicategorical counterparts of the notions of a linear explonential comonad, as considered in the study of linear logic, and of a codereliction transformation, introduced to study differential linear logic via differential categories. 3. Rotating metrics and new multipole moments from scattering amplitudes in arbitrary dimensions

Abstract

We compute the vacuum metric generated by a generic rotating object in arbitrary dimensions up to third post-Minkowskian order by computing the classical contribution of scattering amplitudes describing the graviton emission by massive spin-1 particles up to two loops. The solution depends on the mass, angular momenta, and on up to two parameters related to generic quadrupole moments. In $D=4$ spacetime dimensions, we recover the vacuum Hartle-Thorne solution describing a generic spinning object to second order in the angular momentum, of which the Kerr metric is a particular case obtained for a specific mass quadrupole moment dictated by the uniqueness theorem. At the level of the effective action, the case of minimal couplings corresponds to the Kerr black hole, while any other mass quadrupole moment requires non-minimal couplings. In $D>4$, the absence of black-hole uniqueness theorems implies that there are multiple spinning black hole solutions with different topology. Using scattering amplitudes, we find a generic solution depending on the mass, angular momenta, the mass quadrupole moment, and a new stress quadrupole moment which does not exist in $D=4$. As special cases, we recover the Myers-Perry and the single-angular-momentum black ring solutions, to third and first post-Minkowksian order, respectively. Interestingly, at variance with the four dimensional case, none of these solutions corresponds to the minimal coupling in the effective action. Abstract

We introduce a text-to-speech (TTS) model called BASE TTS, which stands for $\textbf{B}$ig $\textbf{A}$daptive $\textbf{S}$treamable TTS with $\textbf{E}$mergent abilities. BASE TTS is the largest TTS model to-date, trained on 100K hours of public domain speech data, achieving a new state-of-the-art in speech naturalness. It deploys a 1-billion-parameter autoregressive Transformer that converts raw texts into discrete codes ("speechcodes") followed by a convolution-based decoder which converts these speechcodes into waveforms in an incremental, streamable manner. Further, our speechcodes are built using a novel speech tokenization technique that features speaker ID disentanglement and compression with byte-pair encoding. Echoing the widely-reported "emergent abilities" of large language models when trained on increasing volume of data, we show that BASE TTS variants built with 10K+ hours and 500M+ parameters begin to demonstrate natural prosody on textually complex sentences. We design and share a specialized dataset to measure these emergent abilities for text-to-speech. We showcase state-of-the-art naturalness of BASE TTS by evaluating against baselines that include publicly available large-scale text-to-speech systems: YourTTS, Bark and TortoiseTTS. 7. On the study of inclusive semileptonic decays of $B_s$-meson from lattice QCD

Abstract

In this contribution we describe a recent study focused on the lattice calculation of inclusive decay rates of heavy mesons. We show how the inclusive calculation can be achieved starting from four-point lattice correlation functions normalised appropriately. The correlators used in this project come from gauge ensembles provided by the JLQCD and ETM collaborations. An essential point of this method is the extraction of spectral densities from lattice correlators which is obtained using two of the most recent approaches in the literature. Our results are in remarkable agreement with analytical predictions from the operator-product expansion. Abstract

Background and Objective: In recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and in particular Deep Neural Networks (DNN) became a relevant research topic in biomedical image segmentation due to the availability of more and more data sets along with the establishment of well known competitions. Despite the popularity of DNN based segmentation on the research side, these techniques are almost unused in the daily clinical practice even if they could support effectively the physician during the diagnostic process. Apart from the issues related to the explainability of the predictions of a neural model, such systems are not integrated in the diagnostic workflow, and a standardization of their use is needed to achieve this goal. Methods: This paper presents IODeep a new DICOM Information Object Definition (IOD) aimed at storing both the weights and the architecture of a DNN already trained on a particular image dataset that is labeled as regards the acquisition modality, the anatomical region, and the disease under investigation. Results: The IOD architecture is presented along with a DNN selection algorithm from the PACS server based on the labels outlined above, and a simple PACS viewer purposely designed for demonstrating the effectiveness of the DICOM integration, while no modifications are required on the PACS server side. Also a service based architecture in support of the entire workflow has been implemented. Conclusion: IODeep ensures full integration of a trained AI model in a DICOM infrastructure, and it is also enables a scenario where a trained model can be either fine-tuned with hospital data or trained in a federated learning scheme shared by different hospitals. In this way AI models can be tailored to the real data produced by a Radiology ward thus improving the physician decision making process. 9. Effects of W alloying on the electronic structure, phase stability and thermoelectric power factor in epitaxial CrN thin films

Abstract

CrN-based alloy thin films are of interest as thermoelectric materials for energy harvesting. Ab initio calculations show that dilute alloying of CrN with 3 at.% W substituting Cr, induce flat electronic bands and push the Fermi level EF into the conduction band, while retaining dispersive Cr 3d bands. These features are conducive for both high electrical conductivity \sigma and high Seebeck coefficient \alpha, and hence the thermoelectric power factor {\alpha}^2\sigma. To investigate this possibility, epitaxial CrWxNz films were grown on c-plane sapphire by dc-magnetron sputtering. However, even films with the lowest W concentration (x = 0.03) in our study contained metallic h-Cr2N, which is not conducive for a high \alpha. Nevertheless, the films exhibit a sizeable power factor of {\alpha}^2\sigma ~ 4.7 x 10-4 Wm-1K-2 due to high \sigma ~ 700 Scm-1, and a moderate \alpha ~ -25 ~{^^^^00b5}V/K. Increasing h-Cr2N fractions in the 0.03 < x \le 0.19 range monotonically increases \sigma, but severely diminishes \alpha leading to two orders of magnitude decrease in {\alpha}^2\sigma. This trend continues with x > 0.19 due to W precipitation. These findings indicate that dilute W additions below its solubility limit in CrN is important for realizing high thermoelectric power factor in CrWxNz alloy films.

10. The $q^2$ moments in inclusive semileptonic $B$ decays

Abstract

We compute the first moments of the $q^2$ distribution in inclusive semileptonic $B$ decays as functions of the lower cut on $q^2$, confirming a number of results given in the literature and adding the $O(\alpha_s^2\beta_0)$ BLM contributions. We then include the $q^2$-moments recently measured by Belle and Belle II in a global fit to the moments. The new data are compatible with the other measurements and slightly decrease the uncertainty on the nonperturbative parameters and on $|V_{cb}|$. 11. QED effects in inclusive semi-leptonic $B$ decays

Abstract

We analyse in detail the QED corrections to the total decay width and the moments of the electron energy spectrum of the inclusive semi-leptonic $B \to X_c e \nu$ decay. Our calculation includes short-distance electroweak corrections, the complete ${\cal O}(\alpha)$ partonic terms and leading-logarithmic QED effects up to ${\cal O}(\Lambda^3_{\rm QCD}/m_b^3)$. A comprehensive numerical comparison of our results against those obtained with the Monte Carlo (MC) tool PHOTOS is presented. While the comparison indicates good overall agreement, our computation contains QED effects not included in PHOTOS and should therefore better describe photon radiation to $B \to X_c e \nu$ as measured by the $B$-factories. 15. An Exploration of the Relationship between PBIS and Discipline Outcomes for Students with Disabilities

Abstract

To support all students, including students with disabilities, many schools have adopted a positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) framework. Although rigorous research documents the beneficial effects of Tier 1 PBIS for all students and emerging research extends these findings to students with disabilities, there has not been a national U.S. study focused on PBIS and discipline outcomes for students with disabilities. In this exploratory study, we combine existing national data sets to explore the relationship between (a) known PBIS exposure (i.e., being in the PBIS data set) and fidelity (i.e., meeting the criterion on an established fidelity measure of Tier 1 PBIS) and (b) exclusionary discipline for students with disabilities. Using two-part path analysis, we document that PBIS may be associated with decreased use of suspension; however, findings are less consistent for other discipline outcomes. This study highlights the critical need for more accurate data on discipline outcomes and further research on effective intervention.

16. A Scoping Review of Measures Examining the Environments of Persons with Neurodevelopmental Disorders in a Supported Housing Setting

Abstract

Introduction: Having a neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD) can impact the abilities of an individual in many areas of life, including the ability to live independently. The environment of an individual impacts their day-to-day life throughout their lifespan. To improve supported housing experiences, it is important to map the evidence, especially relating to quality and satisfaction with the environment (as defined by the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework). This has been exacerbated by COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, therefore more insight is needed in measuring this. Objective and methods: This scoping review searched 5 health and social science databases with the objective to identify and examine the outcome measures that integrate aspects of the environment that examine supported housing in individuals with NDD. Results and discussion: Fifteen studies met the inclusion criteria. We found that most measures targeted the satisfaction of individuals about their environment, with the ICF Support and Relationships factor of the environment assessed most. Measures were most often completed by a proxy through an interview. This work enhances our understanding of aspects of the environments of supported housing that are currently measured, laying an essential base for future research to improve the lives of individuals with NDDs.

17. A Rutherford-like formula for scattering off Kerr-Newman BHs and subleading corrections

Abstract

By exploiting the Kerr-Schild gauge, we study the scattering of a massive (charged) scalar off a Kerr-Newman black hole. In this gauge, the interactions between the probe and the target involve only tri-linear vertices. We manage to write down the tree-level scattering amplitudes in analytic form, from which we can construct an expression for the eikonal phase which is exact in the spin of the black hole at arbitrary order in the Post-Minkowskian expansion. We compute the classical contribution to the cross-section and deflection angle at leading order for a Kerr black hole for arbitrary orientation of the spin. Finally, we test our method by reproducing the classical amplitude for a Schwarzschild black hole at second Post-Minkowskian order and outline how to extend the analysis to the Kerr-Newman case., Comment: 36 pages, 7 figures. v2: typos corrected and refs added. Abstract

Abstract Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) core biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), including amyloid peptide beta-42 (Aβ42), Aβ42/40 ratio, and phosphorylated tau (pTau), are precious tools for supporting AD diagnosis. However, their use in clinical practice is limited due to the invasiveness of CSF collection. Thus, there is intensive research to find alternative, noninvasive, and widely accessible biological matrices to measure AD core biomarkers. In this study, we measured AD core biomarkers in saliva and plasma by a fully automated platform. We enrolled all consecutive patients with cognitive decline. For each patient, we measured Aβ42, Aβ40, and pTau levels in CSF, saliva, and plasma by Lumipulse G1200 (Fujirebio). We included forty-two patients, of whom 27 had AD. Levels of all biomarkers significantly differed in the three biofluids, with saliva having the lowest and CSF the highest levels of Aβ42, Aβ40, and pTau. A positive correlation of pTau, Aβ42/40 ratio, and pTau/Aβ42 ratio levels in CSF and plasma was detected, while no correlation between any biomarker in CSF and saliva was found. Our findings suggest that plasma but not saliva could represent a surrogate biofluid for measuring core AD biomarkers. Specifically, plasma Aβ42/40 ratio, pTau/Aβ42 ratio, and pTau could serve as surrogates of the corresponding CSF biomarkers.

This paper presents a comprehensive review of both the theory and experimental successes of Quantum Chromodynamics, starting with its emergence as a well defined theory in 1972-73 and following developments and results up to the present day. Topics include a review of the earliest theoretical and experimental foundations; the fundamental constants of QCD; an introductory discussion of lattice QCD, the only known method for obtaining exact predictions from QCD; methods for approximating QCD, with special focus on effective field theories; QCD under extreme conditions; measurements and predictions of meson and baryon states; a special discussion of the structure of the nucleon; techniques for study of QCD at high energy, including treatment of jets and showers; measurements at colliders; weak decays and quark mixing; and a section on the future, which discusses new experimental facilities or upgrades currently funded. Abstract

The Accreting Millisecond X-ray Pulsar IGR J17591-2342 is a LMXB system that went in outburst on August 2018 and it was monitored by the NICER observatory and partially by other facilities. We aim to study how the spectral emission of this source evolved during the outburst, by exploiting the whole X-ray data repository of simultaneous observations. The continuum emission of the combined broad-band spectra is on average well described by an absorbed Comptonisation component scattering black-body-distributed photons peaking at (0.8+/-0.5) keV, by a moderately optically thick corona (tau=2.3+/-0.5) with temperature of (34+/-9) keV. A black-body component with temperature and radial size of (0.8+/-0.2) keV and (3.3+/-1.5) km respectively is required by some of the spectra and suggests that part of the central emission, possibly a fraction of the neutron star surface, is not efficiently scattered by the corona. The continuum at low energies is characterised by significant residuals suggesting the presence of an absorption edge of O VIII and of emission lines of Ne IX ions. Moreover, broad Fe I and Fe XXV K-alpha emission lines are detected at different times of the outburst, suggesting the presence of reflection in the system., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication on MNRAS

Abstract

Olipudase alfa is indicated for the non-central nervous system manifestations of Acid sphingomyelinase deficiency (ASMD). Anaphylaxis is a very rare and life-threatening adverse reaction described for this drug. Here, we report the case of a 2-year-old boy affected by chronic neurovisceral ASMD who experienced signs of hypersensitivity reactions to olipudase alfa since the administered dose of 1 mg/kg during dose escalation and a proper anaphylactic reaction during the second administration of the target therapeutic dose of 3 mg/kg. The treatment was stopped for 15 weeks and then a 7-step desensitization protocol with the infused dose of 0.03 mg/kg was applied. Subsequent gradual dose escalation was resumed, successfully reaching the dose of 0.3 mg/kg. Moreover, biochemical, and radiological disease indexes, which were increased during treatment discontinuation, have gradually improved since the restart of treatment. However, at the second administration of the dose of 0.6 mg/kg, the patient experienced another adverse drug reaction with facial urticarial rash and bronchospasm, requiring the administration of adrenaline, methylprednisolone, and inhaled salbutamol. This case report highlights the need to customize the olipudase alfa desensitization protocol according to individual tolerance and raises the issue of achieving the established therapeutic target in the most sensitive children. Synopsis: We report a case of anaphylaxis to olipudase alfa in a child affected by chronic neurovisceral Acid sphingomyelinase deficiency (ASMD) and describe a 7-step desensitization procedure. This procedure, with the total administered dose of 0.03 mg/kg, followed by gradual dose escalation, allowed to reach the dose of 0.3 mg/kg without adverse reactions; however, at the second administration of the dose of 0.6 mg/kg our patient presented another adverse reaction suggesting the need of a different desensitization strategy.

Abstract

We present the lattice QCD calculation of inclusive semileptonic $B_s$-meson decays. We follow a recently proposed method, which is based on the extraction of smeared spectral densities from Euclidean correlation functions and on the numerical reconstruction of the integration kernel relevant for the inclusive decay rate calculation. We compute four-point Euclidean correlation functions using JLQCD and ETM gauge ensembles with unphysically light $b$-quark masses, and apply two different methods for the integration kernel reconstruction. Finally, we show that the lattice results obtained in this work are in good agreement with the analytic predictions of the operator-product-expansion. 35. Phase stability of Fe from first-principles: atomistic spin dynamics coupled with ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and thermodynamic integration

Abstract

The calculation of free energies from first principles in materials is a formidable task which enables the prediction of phase stability with high accuracy; these calculations are complicated in magnetic materials by the interplay of electronic, magnetic, and vibrational degrees of freedom. In this work, we show the feasibility and accuracy of the calculation of phase stability in magnetic systems with ab initio methods and thermodynamic integration by sampling the magnetic and vibrational phase space with coupled atomistic spin dynamics-ab initio molecular dynamics (ASD-AIMD) simulations [Stockem et al., PRL 121, 125902 (2018)], where energies and interatomic forces are calculated with density functional theory (DFT). We employ the method to calculate the phase stability of Fe at ambient pressure from 800 K up to 1800 K. The Gibbs free energy difference between fcc and bcc Fe at zero pressure as a function of temperature is calculated carrying out thermodynamic integration over temperature on the energies at the DFT level from ASD-AIMD, using a reference free energy difference calculated in the paramagnetic state at temperatures much higher than the magnetic transition temperatures with thermodynamic integration over stress-strain variables with disordered local moment (DLM)-AIMD simulations. We show the importance of the magnetic ordering temperature of bcc Fe on the $\alpha$ to $\gamma$ structural transition temperature, whereas the $\gamma$ to $\delta$ transition is well reproduced independently of the exchange interactions. The Gibbs free energy difference between the two structures is within 5 meV/atom from the CALPHAD estimate, and both transition temperatures are reproduced within 150 K. The present work paves the way to free energy calculations in magnetic materials from first principles with accuracy in the order of 1 meV/atom.

Abstract

It is known that the canonical quantization of general relativity leads to a non-renormalizable theory, which however with the modern tools of effective field theories it is possible to make well-defined at low energies. What is emerging nowadays is that recovering general relativity from the classical limit of scattering amplitudes seems more efficient than actually solve the Einstein equations. The thesis then aims to explore the state-of-the-art strategies to recover classical gravitational observables from quantum computations and apply them in order to reconstruct the Reissner-Nordstr\"om-Tangherlini solution, which is the generalization to arbitrary dimensions of the Reissner-Nordstr\"om one, from the classical limit of scattering amplitudes of charged scalars. In the first part of the thesis, we recover the most generic energy-ordered effective action which is compatible with the symmetries of the theory, and then we discuss the classical limit from which it is possible to obtain back classical gravitational observables out of quantum computations. The state-of-the-art techniques to extract the classical contributions out of graviton emission amplitudes are reviewed, and they are applied to the context of a theory which is also coupled to the electromagnetic field. Since divergences arise in four and five dimensions it is crucial to define non-minimal couplings with the purpose of canceling such singularities and obtaining finite results. In the end, the considerations employed in the metric case are used to recover the electromagnetic potential associated to the black hole solution through the classical limit of photon emission processes. Also in this case there appear divergences that have to be renormalized. Abstract

We present a non-perturbative computation of inclusive rates of semileptonic decays of heavy mesons from lattice QCD simulations. The calculation is based on the extraction of smeared spectral functions obtained from four-point Euclidean correlation functions computed on configuration ensembles of the JLQCD and ETM collaborations. We compare our results for the inclusive decay rates with analytical predictions from the operator-product expansion, finding a good agreement for the calculation of the inclusive decay rate. Since 1996, this network has been integrated with a long-base fluid tiltmeter installed in two 80 m long connected tunnels at the high-altitude (2850 m a.s.l.) volcanological observatory of Pizzi Deneri (PDN) located on the volcano’s summit. The instrumentation was devised with an innovative configuration composed of mercury, free to move along the entire length of the tiltmeter in response to the ground tilt, and laser sensors to measure the changes in the mercury levels. In this study, for the first time, we present the entire 25-year series of data recorded by this instrumentation. During this long interval, the Etna volcano was characterized by numerous major eruptions due to dyke intrusions. The tilt variations recorded in the short-term during the rapid intrusive phases are presented and discussed. These signals contributed both to the modeling of eruptive processes, and in particular in the case of the 2002–2003 eruption, to the real-time understanding of the ongoing eruptive phenomenon, supporting the correct hazard assessment. In the medium-long term (years to decades), we show and discuss that the PDN signal is mainly related to the marked sliding of the entire eastern sector of the volcano. Graphical Abstract

Abstract

Abstract Background Literature suggests colonic resection and primary anastomosis (RPA) instead of Hartmann’s procedure (HP) for the treatment of left-sided colonic emergencies. We aim to evaluate the surgical options globally used to treat patients with acute left-sided colonic emergencies and the factors that leading to the choice of treatment, comparing HP and RPA. Methods This is a prospective, international, multicenter, observational study registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. A total 1215 patients with left-sided colonic emergencies who required surgery were included from 204 centers during the period of March 1, 2020, to May 31, 2020. with a 1-year follow-up. Results 564 patients (43.1%) were females. The mean age was 65.9 ± 15.6 years. HP was performed in 697 (57.3%) patients and RPA in 384 (31.6%) cases. Complicated acute diverticulitis was the most common cause of left-sided colonic emergencies (40.2%), followed by colorectal malignancy (36.6%). Abstract Background Anthracyclines can cause left ventricular (LV) dysfunction. There is little data about right ventricular (RV) damage during chemotherapy. Aim This study aimed to investigate the toxic effects of chemotherapy, analyzing its impact on right ventricular function. Material and Methods A prospective study was conducted, enrolling 83 female patients (55 ± 11 years old) affected by breast cancer treated with anthracyclines. Cardiological evaluation, HFA risk score assessment and comprehensive echocardiogram, including speckle tracking analysis and 3D analysis, were performed before starting chemotherapy (T0) and at 3 (T1), 6 (T2) and 12 months (T3) after beginning treatment. RV function was assessed with tricuspid annular plane excursion (TAPSE), S’ wave of the tricuspid annulus, fractional area change (FAC), RV global longitudinal strain (RV-GLS), free wall strain (RV-FWLS) and RV 3D ejection fraction (RV-3DEF). Abstract

Abstract Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is an incurable B-cell malignancy characterized by a high clinical variability. Therefore, there is a critical need to define parameters that identify high-risk patients for aggressive disease and therapy resistance. B-cell receptor (BCR) signaling is crucial for MCL initiation and progression and is a target for therapeutic intervention. We interrogated BCR signaling proteins (SYK, LCK, BTK, PLCγ2, p38, AKT, NF-κB p65, and STAT5) in 30 primary MCL samples using phospho-specific flow cytometry. Anti-IgM modulation induced heterogeneous BCR signaling responses among samples allowing the identification of two clusters with differential responses. The cluster with higher response was associated with shorter progression free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Moreover, higher constitutive AKT activity was predictive of inferior response to the Bruton's tyrosine kinase inhibitor (BTKi) ibrutinib. Time-to-event analyses showed that MCL international prognostic index (MIPI) high-risk category and higher STAT5 response were predictors of shorter PFS and OS whilst MIPI high-risk category and high SYK response predicted shorter OS. In conclusion, we identified BCR signaling properties associated with poor clinical outcome and resistance to ibrutinib, thus highlighting the prognostic and predictive significance of BCR activity and advancing our understanding of signaling heterogeneity underlying clinical behavior of MCL.

Abstract

Countless processes in nature and industry, from rain droplet nucleation to plankton interaction in the ocean, are intimately related to turbulent fluctuations of local concentrations of advected matter. These fluctuations can be described by considering the change of the separation between particle pairs, known as pair dispersion, which is believed to obey a cubic in time growth according to Richardson's theory. Our work reveals a universal, scale-invariant alignment between the relative velocity and position vectors of dispersing particles at a mean angle that we show to be a universal constant of turbulence. We connect the value of this mean angle to Richardson's traditional theory and find agreement with data from a numerical simulation and a laboratory experiment. While the Richardson's cubic regime has been observed for small initial particle separations only, the constancy of the mean angle manifests throughout the entire inertial range of turbulence. Thus, our work reveals the universal nature of turbulent pair dispersion through a geometrical paradigm whose validity goes beyond the classical theory, and provides a novel framework for understanding and modeling transport and mixing processes., Comment: 20 pages, three figures

The metric and the electromagnetic potential generated by a static, spherically symmetric charged massive object in any dimension are given by the Reissner-Nordstr\"om-Tangherlini solution. We derive the expansion of this solution up to third post-Minkowskian order by computing the classical contribution of scattering amplitudes describing the emission of either a graviton or a photon from a massive charged scalar field up to two loops. In four and five dimensions these amplitudes develop ultraviolet divergences that are cancelled by higher-derivative counterterms in a way that generalises what was recently shown to happen in the chargeless case. Abstract

Liquid electrolytes are currently state-of-the-art for commercial Li-ion batteries. However, their use implicates inherent challenges, including safety concerns associated with flammability, limited thermal stability, and susceptibility to dendrite formation on the lithium metal anode, that can compromise the battery lifespan. Solid-state polymer electrolytes offer an alternative to conventional liquid electrolytes, aiming to mitigate safety, stability, and performance drawbacks. This study investigates the preparation and the comprehensive characterization of polyethylene oxide (PEO) and polycarbonate (PC) blends obtained through extrusion process. The process is solvent-free and easily scalable at the industrial level; it grants the efficient dispersion and mixing of PEO and PC. Blends at different ratios of PEO (Mw of 4 × 105 and 4 × 106 g mol˗1) and two types of PCs (namely, polyethylene and polypropylene carbonate) including lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) are prepared. Optimization and investigation of the relative effects between the application of different PCs and the variable ratios of PEO/PCs on the mechanical, morphologic and electrochemical properties of the final polymeric membranes is carried out for future applications of these systems, as efficient electrolytes in all-solid-state lithium batteries.

Abstract

Background'Nebbiolo' is a grapevine cultivar typical of north-western Italy, appreciated for producing high-quality red wines. Grapevine cultivars are characterized by possessing highly heterozygous genomes, including a great incidence of genomic rearrangements larger than 50 bp, so called structural variations (SVs). Even though abundant, SVs are an under-explored source of genetic variation mainly due to methodological limitations at their detection.ResultsWe employed a multiple platform approach to produce long-range genomic data for two different 'Nebbiolo' clones, namely: optical mapping, long-reads and linked-reads. We performed a haplotype-resolved de novo assembly for cultivar 'Nebbiolo' (clone CVT 71) and used an ab-initio strategy to annotate it. The annotated assembly enhanced our ability to detect SVs, enabling the study of genomic regions not present in the grapevines' reference genome and accounting for their functional implications. We performed variant calling analyses at three different organizational levels: i) between haplotypes of clone CVT 71 (primary assembly vs haplotigs), ii) between 'Nebbiolo' and 'Cabernet Sauvignon' assemblies and iii) between clones CVT 71 and CVT 185, representing different 'Nebbiolo' biotypes. The cumulative size of non-redundant merged SVs indicated a total of 79.6 Mbp for the first comparison and 136.1 Mbp for the second one, while no SVs were detected for the third comparison. Interestingly, SVs differentiating cultivars and haplotypes affected similar numbers of coding genes.ConclusionsOur results suggest that SVs accumulation rate and their functional implications in 'Nebbiolo' genome are highly-dependent on the organizational level under study. SVs are abundant when comparing 'Nebbiolo' to a different cultivar or the two haplotypes of the same individual, while they turned absent between the two analysed clones.

Abstract

Multifunctional productive systems based on native species management, a new paradigm that counters colonial worldviews, offer sustainable sources of food and materials while preserving biodiversity. Despite extensive discussions in herbaceous and agricultural systems, applying this concept to native forests in Northern Patagonia remains unclear. Multifunctional system implementation can be approached from a fractal perspective, with evaluations at the stand level being essential for understanding ecological processes across scales. Here, we exemplify research and management for multiple native species, integrating results from 10 years of field experiments on the impacts of biomass harvesting intensity (HI) on nine Nature's Contributions to People (NCPs), including habitat creation, pollination, soil formation, hazard regulation, prevention of invasions, and provision of energy, food, materials, and options. Our findings reveal that some regulating NCPs peak with null HI, while certain material and regulating NCPs maximize at the highest HI. Low to intermediate HI (30–50%) show a more balanced provision of all NCPs. Our results suggest that some biomass extraction is necessary to enhance most NCPs, emphasizing the importance of balancing material provisioning and biodiversity conservation in management schemes. We propose future directions for designing multifunctional forest systems, advocating for low-density plantation of native tree species with high wood quality within the natural forest matrix. This approach may yield higher NCPs levels over time compared to the current cattle breeding and wood extraction system, with implications beyond Patagonia, considering historical associations of such practices with colonial worldviews globally.
