Introduction. The determination of the facial biotype and smile arc, is part of the orthodontic diagnosis, and both are important in the treatment plan. The human body is a set of proportions, so it is necessary to know the relationship between the characteristics of the smile and the facial pattern, since these factors should be considered at the time of restoring the anterior sector, in addition the facial biotype will determine the plan of the restorative treatment. Objective. The study determined the relationship between the type of smile arc and facial biotype in university students. Methods. It was considered a probabilistic sample of 191 students who met the selection criteria. Two frontal photographs were used, one where the patient had to smile and another without smiling. The qualitative data were analyzed using the Chi square test to determine significant differences between the smile arc and the facial biotype. Results. According to the smile arc, 41% (n = 79) of the students presented an arc of a consonant smile, and 59% (n = 112) a non-consonant smile arc. According to the facial biotype it was found that 33% (n = 63) of the students presented a brachifacial biotype, 38% (n = 72) a mesofacial biotype, and 29% (n = 56) a dolichofacial biotype. With respect to the relationship between the smile arc and the facial biotype in students, it was concluded that in the brachifacial biotype, 46% presented an arc of consonant smile and 54% no consonant, in the mesofacial biotype 38% an arc of consonant smile and 62% non-consonant, and in the dolichofacial biotype 41% an arc of a consonant smile and a 59% non-consonant. Conclusions. There is no statistically significant relationship between the smile arc and the facial biotype (p = 5.991). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
