5. Mid-Infrared ultra-high-Q resonators based on fluoride crystalline materials

Abstract

Decades ago, the losses of glasses in the near infrared (near-IR) were investigated in views of developments for optical telecommunications. Today, properties in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) are of interest for molecular spectroscopy applications. In particular, high-sensitivity spectroscopic techniques based on high-finesse mid-IR cavities hold high promise for medical applications. Due to exceptional purity and low losses, whispering gallery mode microresonators based on polished alkaline earth metal fluoride crystals (i.e the $\mathrm{XF_2}$ family, where X $=$ Ca, Mg, Ba, Sr,...) have attained ultra-high quality (Q) factor resonances (Q$>$10$^{8}$) in the near-IR and visible spectral ranges. Here we report for the first time ultra-high Q factors in the mid-IR using crystalline microresonators. Using an uncoated chalcogenide (ChG) tapered fiber, light from a continuous wave quantum cascade laser (QCL) is efficiently coupled to several crystalline microresonators at 4.4 $\mu$m wavelength. We measure the optical Q factor of fluoride crystals in the mid-IR using cavity ringdown technique. We observe that $\mathrm{MgF_2}$ microresonators feature quality factors that are very close to the fundamental absorption limit, as caused by the crystal's multiphonon absorption (Q$\sim$10$^{7}$), in contrast to near-IR measurements far away from these fundamental limits. Due to lower multiphonon absorption in $\mathrm{BaF_2}$ and $\mathrm{SrF_2}$, we show that ultra-high quality factors of Q $\geqslant$ 1.4 $\times 10^{8}$ can be reached at 4.4 $\mu$m. This corresponds to an optical finesse of $\mathcal{F}>$4$\cdot$ 10$^{4}$, the highest value achieved for any type of mid-IR resonator to date, and a more than 10-fold improvement over the state-of-the-art. Such compact ultra-high Q crystalline microresonators provide a route for narrow linewidth frequency-stabilized QCL or mid-IR Kerr comb generation., Comment: C. Lecaplain and C. Abstract

Recurrent gene fusions are common in salivary gland tumors including benign tumors, such as pleomorphic adenoma (PA) and myoepithelioma (ME). In cases where chromosomal rearrangement is identified in the pleomorphic adenoma gene 1 (PLAG1)gene, different gene partners are found. Oncocytic metaplasia, characterized by oncocytes with abundant eosinophilic granular cytoplasm and hyperchromatic nuclei, is a well-known phenomenon in salivary gland neoplasms. However, the pure oncocytic variant of PA/ME showed PLAG1gene rearrangements involving various gene partners at the molecular level, without any recurrent fusion being found. Our study includes 20 cases of PA/ME, with 11 females and 9 males. The age of patients ranged from 37 to 96 years, with a median age of 62.8 years. Most tumors originate from the parotid gland. The median size of the tumor was 26.5 mm (range: 13 to 60 mm). Among the 20 cases, 14 were a pure oncocytic variant of PA/ME, whereas 6 cases showed focal oncocytic or oncocytic-like aspects. Molecular studies on 20 cases of PA/ME were conducted. A novel recurrent ZBTB47-AS1::PLAG1fusion was identified in 6 of 12 cases with pure oncocytic metaplasia, whereas the other cases had PLAG1gene fusion with different gene partners. The transcriptomic analysis of the cases harboring ZBTB47-AS1::PLAG1fusion demonstrated that these tumors have a distinct molecular profile from conventional PA/ME. This study reveals a unique subset in the oncocytic PA/ME spectrum characterized by pure oncocytic morphology with larger oncocytic cells and recurrent ZBTB47-AS1::PLAG1fusion. It also highlights the transcriptomic distinctness of salivary gland adenomas with pure oncocytic metaplasia in the spectrum of salivary gland neoplasms. Further studies are needed to better understand the oncocytic variant of PA/ME and to determine the true nature of oncocytic cells in PA/ME.

Abstract

International audience; The Antarctica solar coronagraph –AntarctiCor– for the “Ex- treme Solar Coronagraphy Antarctic Program Experiment” –ESCAPE– comprises an internally-occulted coronagraph based on the externally-occulted ASPIICS coro- nagraph for the ESA formation-flying PROBA-3 mission. This paper describes the AntarctiCor design for ground-based observations from the DomeC Antarctica plateau of the polarized broad-band (591 nm ± 5 nm) K-corona and of the narrow- band (FWHM = 0.5 nm), polarized emission of the coronal green-line at 530.3 nm. The science goal of these observations is to map the topology and dynamics of the coronal magnetic field, addressing coronal heating and space weather questions.

Abstract

The French critical zone initiative, called OZCAR (Observatoires de la Zone Critique–Application et Recherche or Critical Zone Observatories–Application and Research) is a National Research Infrastructure (RI). OZCAR-RI is a network of instrumented sites, bringing together 21 pre-existing research observatories monitoring different compartments of the zone situated between “the rock and the sky,” the Earth’s skin or critical zone (CZ), over the long term. These observatories are regionally based and have specific initial scientific questions, monitoring strategies, databases, and modeling activities. The diversity of OZCAR-RI observatories and sites is well representative of the heterogeneity of the CZ and of the scientific communities studying it. Despite this diversity, all OZCAR-RI sites share a main overarching mandate, which is to monitor, understand, and predict (“earthcast”) the fluxes of water and matter of the Earth’s near surface and how they will change in response to the “new climatic regime.” The vision for OZCAR strategic development aims at designing an open infrastructure, building a national CZ community able to share a systemic representation of the CZ, and educating a new generation of scientists more apt to tackle the wicked problem of the Anthropocene. OZCAR articulates around: (i) a set of common scientific questions and cross-cutting scientific activities using the wealth of OZCAR-RI observatories, (ii) an ambitious instrumental development program, and (iii) a better interaction between data and models to integrate the different time and spatial scales. Internationally, OZCAR-RI aims at strengthening the CZ community by providing a model of organization for pre-existing observatories and by offering CZ instrumented sites. OZCAR is one of two French mirrors of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructure (eLTER-ESFRI) project. OZCAR-RI is supported by the French Ministry of Education and Research, through the Allenvi Alliance. Abstract

[Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [TR1_IRSTEA]ARCEAU [ADD1_IRSTEA]Hydrosystèmes et risques naturels; International audience; OZCAR (Critical Zone Observatories: Research and Applications) is a national distributed infrastructure associatingmost of the French observation sites dedicated to the observation and monitoring of the Critical zone, the thinouter veneer of Earth's continents extending from the top of the vegetation canopy down to groundwater. OZCAR includes more than 60 highly instrumented sites/observatories for long-term measurements of biological,chemical and physical parameters of groundwater, river water, glaciers, soils, and wetlands in France and overseas.Each observatory focuses on one or more components of the CZ but importantly OZCAR is covering most of thelateral and vertical compartments of the CZ from mountains to costal areas.These observatories have been set up formerly to answer a local/regional scientific issue (ie. flood event prediction,acid rain resilience. . . ) but they all share the overarching question issue of predicting the response of the CZ toperturbation ranging from the second to the millions of year.They all aim at seeking and understanding the dynamic architecture of the CZ, identifying the elementaryprocesses in order to determine mass and energy budgets, to be implemented in numerical predictive models.OZCAR's crosscutting scientific approach to sites and disciplines using the breadth and richness of its observatoriesfrom mountains to costal areas will allow:- Concepts and instruments to be exchanged- To test hypotheses- To construct realistic predictive models of Earth's surface evolution in response to global change at the localscale.Through environmental data portal and modeling platforms, OZCAR is not only a research infrastructure opento the scientific community, it is also aiming at advising policy makers and stakeholders on the water, soil, and biodiversity resource and the landscape scale.

Abstract

International audience; OZCAR (Critical Zone Observatories - Application and Research) is a national Research Infrastructure dedicated to providing an integrated understanding of the Earth's surface processes ranging from the subsurface to the lower atmosphere and from high mountains to coastal areas. It includes over 100 highly instrumented sites distributed among 21 observatories for long-term measurements of biological, chemical and physical parameters of groundwater, river water, glaciers, soils, and wetlands in France and overseas. Based on long-term observations at the landscape scale, OZCAR sites address specific environmental question of local societal relevance but all share the same overarching goal of better predicting the response of the Critical Zone to perturbations across a range of timescales. Diversity of OZCAR observation sites allows exploring laterally and vertically all compartments of the CZ from mountains to costal areas. This enables data acquisition on water, soils, agricultural practices and exchanges with the atmosphere. Thus, OZCAR proposes a great variety of models that ultimately will help reproducing observations and predict the evolution of the CZ. Through its wealth of environmental data portal and modelling platerforms, OZCAR aims at advising policy makers and stakeholers on the water, soil, and biodiversity resource. Recently, OZCAR integrated together with the French LTSER network (Zones Ateliers) the pan-European eLTER-ESFRI project.

Abstract

The mid-infrared (mid-IR) regime (typically the wavelength regime of $\lambda \sim 2.5-20 \ \mathrm{\mu m}$) is an important spectral range for spectroscopy as many molecules have their fundamental rotational-vibrational absorption in this band. Recently optical frequency combs based on optical microresonators ("Kerr" combs) at the onset of the mid-IR region have been generated using crystalline resonators and integrated planar silicon micro-resonators. Here we extend for the first time Kerr combs deep into the mid-IR i.e. the 'molecular fingerprint' region. This is achieved by combining an ultra high quality (Q) factor mid-IR microresonator based on crystalline $\mathrm{MgF_{2}}$ with the quantum cascade laser (QCL) technology. Using a tapered chalgogenide (ChG) fiber and a QCL continuous wave pump laser, frequency combs at $\lambda\sim 4.4\ \mathrm{\mu m}$ (i.e. 2270cm$^{-1}$) are generated, that span over 600nm (i.e. 300cm$^{-1}$) in bandwidth, with a mode spacing of 14.3GHz (0.5cm$^{-1}$), corresponding to more than 700 comb lines. Numerical simulations of the Kerr comb formation and the resonator dispersion predict that even larger bandwidth and coherent operation in the soliton regime may be achieved by dispersion engineering of the crystalline microresonator. The combination of ultra-high Q crystalline microresonators and CW QCL sources is a promising platform for broadband, compact sources of frequency combs in the mid-IR, that provides a route to compact mid-IR spectrometers., Comment: We retract this submission as further measurements revealed that the FTIR instrument used in experiments is subject to spectral artefacts, as a result of a modulated input laser signal (caused by coupling mid IR laser light to the crystalline resonator). The spectra in Figure 3 are attributed to this effect and are not actual mid IR combs. All other measurements are unaffected by this conclusion

Abstract

We present in this paper a synthesis of power amplifier linearization techniques. SSPA have to operate in their best capabilities for telecommunications applications. They have to present in the same time high efficiency PAE and low non-linearities. After a description and simulation results of the different families of linearization techniques, Cartesian Feedback experimental results are shown.
