Introduction: We investigated Quality of Life (QOL) in a sample of individuals (n = 341) who experienced different consequences in terms of displacement from their house after earthquake. Methods: Three groups were studied: those who had been displaced but are no longer so, those still displaced, and those who were never displaced. QOL for four time points was assessed: pre-earthquake, during displacement, at the time of the survey, and in ten years. Results: Different trajectories of QOL were observed in the three groups: not displaced individuals showed no significant variation, those who were displaced had a significant decline in QOL after the earthquake but a significant recovery after the displacement experience, and those who were still displaced at the time of the survey reported lowest QOL both after the earthquake and in the future, with no recovery. Predictors of perceived QOL decline were quality and type of temporary accommodation, place attachment, and perceived health impairment. Subsequent QOL perceived improvement was predicted by quality and type of temporary accommodation, risk awareness, and emotional well-being. Discussion: Our findings highlight the importance of minimizing the duration of temporary displacement and providing high-quality temporary accommodations, considering individual needs in the local contexts and communities.

Oxidation processes in mitochondria and different environmental insults contribute to unwarranted accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). These, in turn, rapidly damage intracellular lipids, proteins, and DNA, ultimately causing aging and several human diseases. Cells have developed different and very effective systems to control ROS levels. Among these, removal of excessive amounts is guaranteed by upregulated expression of various antioxidant enzymes, through activation of the NF-E2-Related Factor 2 (NRF2) protein. Here, we show that Mitogen Activated Protein Kinase 15 (MAPK15) controls the transactivating potential of NRF2 and, in turn, the expression of its downstream target genes. Specifically, upon oxidative stress, MAPK15 is necessary to increase NRF2 expression and nuclear translocation, by inducing its activating phosphorylation, ultimately supporting transactivation of cytoprotective antioxidant genes.Lungs are continuously exposed to oxidative damages induced by environmental insults such as air pollutants and cigarette smoke. Interestingly, we demonstrate that MAPK15 is very effective in supporting NRF2-dependent antioxidant transcriptional response to cigarette smoke of epithelial lung cells. Oxidative damage induced by cigarette smoke indeed represents a leading cause of disability and death worldwide by contributing to the pathogenesis of different chronic respiratory diseases and lung cancer. Therefore, the development of novel therapeutic strategies able to modulate cellular responses to oxidative stress would be highly beneficial. Our data contribute to the necessary understanding of the molecular mechanisms behind such responses and identify new potentially actionable targets.

Abstract The Brazilian Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery, through the Guidelines Project, presents new Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Guidelines, on the subject of care for abdominal aortic aneurysm patients. Its development prioritized descriptive guidelines, using the EMBASE, LILACS, and PubMed databases. References include randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and cohort studies. Quality of evidence was evaluated by a pair of coordinators, aided by the RoB 2 Cochrane tool and the Newcastle Ottawa Scale forms. The subjects include juxtarenal aneurysms, infected aneurysms, and new therapeutic techniques, especially endovascular procedures. The current version of the guidelines include important recommendations for the primary topics involving diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up for abdominal aortic aneurysm patients, providing an objective guide for medical practice, based on scientific evidence and widely available throughout Brazil.

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the management and care of onco-hematological patients, particularly those with lymphoproliferative disorders who are at higher risk for COVID-19 associated bacterial and fungal superinfections.Case presentationWe present the successful treatment of a 44-year-old male patient with refractory mantle cell lymphoma treated with chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cell therapy, despite concurrent COVID-19 infection. The patient developed grade II cytokine release syndrome, requiring admission to the intensive care unit. The CAR-T cells expanded effectively, and the patient achieved complete metabolic remission. During the treatment course, the patient experienced complications including COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis and a co-infection with Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and the SARS-CoV-2 omicron variant. Prompt antifungal and antibacterial therapy, along with appropriate COVID-19 treatment, led to the resolution of these infections. Dexamethasone was also administered to reduce inflammation and aid hematologic recovery. Despite the presence of multiple infections, the patient achieved complete remission of lymphoma, highlighting the effectiveness of CAR-T cell therapy in this high-risk patient.ConclusionDespite the challenges posed by concurrent infections, the decision to proceed with CAR-T cell therapy in this patient proved to be successful, resulting in complete remission of lymphoma. Early initiation of supportive therapies and the use of dexamethasone contributed to the resolution of complications. This case underscores the importance of individualized decision-making and the potential benefits of CAR-T cell therapy in similar high-risk patients.

Abstract Identifying factors that influence problematic beliefs and behaviors related to pharmacotherapy may be useful for clinicians to improve the patients’ adherence. The study aims to assess patients’ beliefs about the necessity and concerns regarding pharmacotherapy in rheumatic diseases and attitude styles, and to investigate the association between clinical factors and negative beliefs about medication. A sample of 712 patients affected by Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis was enrolled. They were assessed using the Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaires-Specific (BMQ), the Simplified Disease Activity Index (SDAI), the Visual Analogue Scale for pain (VAS), the Chalder Fatigue Scale (CFQ) and the Health Assessment Questionnaire-Disability Index (HAQ-DI). The balance between benefits and costs in the BMQ-Specific was positive in the 79.4% of patients, negative in the 12.1% and equal in the 8.6%. SDAI, taking more than 5 medications, taking anti interleukin 6 (Anti-IL6) or biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs), or targeted synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (tsDMARDs), pain, and fatigue were significantly associated to higher Concerns. Having a longer disease duration was significantly associated with a higher Necessity, together with the current pharmacological treatments and the disability. The multivariate regression models estimated that higher pain and fatigue were associated to higher Concerns (p

Objective: To document the recovery of vascular services in Europe following the first COVID-19 pandemic peak. Methods: An online structured vascular service survey with repeated data entry between 23 March and 9 August 2020 was carried out. Unit level data were collected using repeated questionnaires addressing modifications to vascular services during the first peak (March – May 2020, “period 1”), and then again between May and June (“period 2”) and June and July 2020 (“period 3”). The duration of each period was similar. From 2 June, as reductions in cases began to be reported, centres were first asked if they were in a region still affected by rising cases, or if they had passed the peak of the first wave. These centres were asked additional questions about adaptations made to their standard pathways to permit elective surgery to resume. Results: The impact of the pandemic continued to be felt well after countries’ first peak was thought to have passed in 2020. Aneurysm screening had not returned to normal in 21.7% of centres. Carotid surgery was still offered on a case by case basis in 33.8% of centres, and only 52.9% of centres had returned to their normal aneurysm threshold for surgery. Half of centres (49.4%) believed their management of lower limb ischaemia continued to be negatively affected by the pandemic. Reduced operating theatre capacity continued in 45.5% of centres. Twenty per cent of responding centres documented a backlog of at least 20 aortic repairs. At least one negative swab and 14 days of isolation were the most common strategies used for permitting safe elective surgery to recommence. Conclusion: Centres reported a broad return of services approaching pre-pandemic “normal” by July 2020. Many introduced protocols to manage peri-operative COVID-19 risk. Backlogs in cases were reported for all major vascular surgeries.

This visual paper provides an account of Jababacoa, a project by the artist collective C.A.S.I.T.A (Loreto Alonso, Eduardo Galvagni and Diego del Pozo) + Luis Gárciga. The project started with the mounting of a textile manufacturing workshop in the History Museum of Guanabacoa in Havana, Cuba. With modern sewing machines and every necessary material, former workers of the textile workshop, who could be found in Guanabacoa until the 90s, were convened. It was about the creation of a space, but also about the reconstruction of these women’s oral history. Additionally, it was an opportunity to share standpoints and questions about production methods and new imaginaries. With documentary material and the ideas that came up during the collaboration, we created an audiovisual installation with video mapping projections that was exhibited in the Visual Arts Development Center for the 13th Havana Biennial in 2019. Collectively remembering women’s practices in these former sewing workshops is the starting point from which we unfolded very different paths of analysis and creation, such as theindustrial and the handcrafted, their implications in production models, local identity and patrimony, the emotional production linked to the working conditions, and the ways to reconcile private and work life, especially how women manage to be workers, housekeepers, mothers, daughters, etc. It is about reactivating a collective memory that we want to inscribe in the context of a history museum. To do that, we transformed one of its rooms into a textile workshop. The jabas or bags we manufactured are both objects and tales of an oral transmission process of collective memory fragments that share a feminist perspective and orbit around life experiences in the 90s, when semi industrial textile workshops began to close or to be transformed as a consequence of the fall of the socialist bloc in Eastern Europe. The resulting materials and the documentation of the experience were introduced in the History Museum of Guanabacoa, where we also organized a talk with specialists in industrial patrimony and the town’s history as part of the Biennial’s public activities program. Regarding symbolic elements, we have kept in mind the need to transmit not only the contents of a history of labor and production, but also the emotional footprint that the workshop experience left on its workers, as well as the mark left by the workshop dismantling from an economic and, more importantly, a human perspective. The installation reflects some symbolic elements and highlights the constant change in the scale between the individual and the global, or the local and the universal. Jababacoa sets out to add Guanabacoa’s laboring past as an industrial production center to its historical and cultural identity, which is frequently associated with Afro-Cuban religious practices. Through conversations among the participants and the creation of situations, we addressed the concept of labor beyond its monetary side, raising awareness about its implications on identity and emotions, and the processes of subjectification and interrelationality. With this identification as a starting point, we worked on these issues together with the public to be able to get common reference points for possible futures.

Background: Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) is a severe complication of SARS-CoV-2 infection caused by hyperactivation of the immune system. Methods: this is a retrospective analysis of clinical data, biochemical parameters, and immune cell subsets in 40 MIS-C patients from hospital admission to outpatient long-term follow-up. Results: MIS-C patients had elevated inflammatory markers, associated with T- and NK-cell lymphopenia, a profound depletion of dendritic cells, and altered monocyte phenotype at disease onset, while the subacute phase of the disease was characterized by a significant increase in T- and B-cell counts and a rapid decline in activated T cells and terminally differentiated B cells. Most of the immunological parameters returned to values close to the normal range during the remission phase (20–60 days after hospital admission). Nevertheless, we observed a significantly reduced ratio between recently generated and more differentiated CD8+ T- and B-cell subsets, which partially settled at longer-term follow-up determinations. Conclusions: The characterization of lymphocyte distribution in different phases of MIS-C may help to understand the course of diseases that are associated with dysregulated immune responses and to calibrate prompt and targeted treatments.

The transmembrane glycoprotein CD93 has been identified as a potential new target to inhibit tumor angiogenesis. Recently, Multimerin-2 (MMRN2), a pan-endothelial extracellular matrix protein, has been identified as a ligand for CD93, but the interaction mechanism between these two proteins is yet to be studied. In this article, we aim to investigate the structural and functional effects of induced mutations on the binding domain of CD93 to MMRN2. Starting from experimental data, we assessed how specific mutations in the C-type lectin-like domain (CTLD) affect the binding interaction profile. We described a four-step workflow in order to predict the effects of variations on the inter-residue interaction network at the PPI, based on evolutionary information, complex network metrics, and energetic affinity. We showed that the application of computational approaches, combined with experimental data, allowed us to gain more in-depth molecular insights into the CD93–MMRN2 interaction, offering a platform for developing innovative therapeutics able to target these molecules and block their interaction. This comprehensive molecular insight might prove useful in drug design in cancer therapy.

- Abstract
Evaluation of B-cell clonality can be challenging in the interpretation of lymphoid infiltrates on tissue sections. Clonality testing based on IG gene rearrangements analysis by PCR (IG-PCR) is the gold standard. Alternatively, B-cell clonality can be assessed by the recognition of immunoglobulin light chain (IgLC) restriction, by immunohistochemistry (IHC), chromogenic in situ hybridization (ISH) or flow cytometry (FC). IG-PCR requires molecular facilities, and FC requires cell suspensions, both not widely available in routine pathology units. This study evaluates the performance of B-cell clonality detection by IgLC-RNAscope® (RNAsc) in a group of 216 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded samples including 185 non-Hodgkin B-cell lymphomas, 11 Hodgkin lymphomas (HL) and 20 reactive samples. IgLC-RNAsc, performed in parallel with FC in 53 cases, demonstrated better performances (93% vs 83%), particularly in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (98% vs 71%) and follicular lymphoma (93% vs 83%) diagnosis. IgLC-RNAsc was also superior to IHC and ISH especially in samples with limited tumor cell content, where IG-PCR was not informative. Performed for the first time on mediastinal lymphomas, IgLC-RNAsc identified monotypic IgLC transcripts in 69% of primary mediastinal large B-cell lymphoma (PMBCL) and 67% of mediastinal gray zone lymphomas (MGZL). IGK/L double-negative cells were detected in 1 PMBCL, 2 MGZL, and all classical HL, while monotypic IgLC expression appeared to be a hallmark in nodular lymphocyte-predominant HL. IgLC-RNAsc demonstrates to be a powerful tool in B-cell lymphoma diagnosis, above all in challenging cases with limited tumor cell content, ensuring in situ investigations on mechanisms of Ig regulation across lymphoma entities. Astrophysics - Earth and Planetary Astrophysics - Abstract
Although it is fairly established that Gravitational Instability (GI) should occur in the early phases of the evolution of a protoplanetary disk, the fate of the clumps resulting from disk fragmentation and their role in planet formation is still unclear. In the present study we investigate semi-analytically their evolution following the contraction of a synthetic population of clumps with varied initial structure and orbits coupled with the surrounding disk and the central star. Our model is based on recently published state-of-the-art 3D collapse simulations of clumps with varied thermodynamics. Various evolutionary mechanisms are taken into account, and their effect is explored both individually and in combination with others: migration and tidal disruption, mass accretion, gap opening and disk viscosity. It is found that, in general, at least 50% of the initial clumps survive tides, leaving behind potential gas giant progenitors after ~10^5 yr of evolution in the disk. The rest might be either disrupted or produce super-Earths and other low mass planets provided that a solid core can be assembled on a sufficiently short timescale, a possibility that we do not address in this paper. Extrapolating to million year timescales, all our surviving protoplanets would lead to close-in gas giants. This outcome might in part reflect the limitations of the migration model adopted, and is reminiscent of the analogous result found in core-accretion models in absence of fine-tuning of the migration rate. Yet it suggests that a significant fraction of the clumps formed by gravitational instability could be the precursors of Hot Jupiters.

We perform coagulation & fragmentation simulations to understand grain growth in T Tauri & brown dwarf discs. We present a physically-motivated approach using a probability distribution function for the collision velocities and separating the deterministic & stochastic velocities. We find growth to larger sizes compared to other models. Furthermore, if brown dwarf discs are scaled-down versions of T Tauri discs (in terms of stellar & disc mass, and disc radius), growth at the same location with respect to the outer edge occurs to similar sizes in both discs., Comment: Submitted to the conference proceedings of the IAU Symposium 299 - Exploring the formation and evolution of planetary systems. 2 pages; 2 figures

We perform coagulation and fragmentation simulations using the new physically-motivated model by Garaud et al. (2013) to determine growth locally in brown dwarf disks. We show that large grains can grow and that if brown dwarf disks are scaled down versions of T Tauri disks (in terms of stellar mass, disk mass and disk radius) growth at an equivalent location with respect to the disk truncation radius can occur to the same size in both disks. We show that similar growth occurs because the collisional timescales in the two disks are comparable. Our model may therefore potentially explain the recent observations of grain growth to millimetre sizes in brown dwarf disks, as seen in T Tauri disks., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted by ApJL

621 - Abstract
Worldwide, BP operates many thousand kilometres of pipelines carrying valuable yet toxic and corrosive fluids. The structural integrity of these pipelines is crucial, as any failure may result in environmental damage, economic losses and injuries to personnel. Convention- ally, pipeline integrity is assessed on a time basis. This inherently limits the amount of infor- mation available about its structural health, as any damage which develops in unexpected circumstances or while the pipeline is not being inspected may remain undetected. Such lack of information hinders the reliability of any prognosis and of Risk-Based Inspection and Maintenance strategies, increases the risk of unexpected critical damage development and pipeline failure, and forces the use of costly time-based maintenance, following the safe-life design approach. Conversely, if sufficient information about pipeline integrity were avail- able to produce reliable prognoses, then it would become possible to dramatically reduce the risk of unexpected failures and to utilise cost-efficient condition-based maintenance, which prescribes the replacement of a pipeline only when it is about to suffer critical dam- age and has therefore reached the actual end of its operational life. In this way, pipeline networks would become safer and more reliable while at the same time more productive and less costly. This thesis introduces and demonstrates a Structural Health Monitoring ap- proach that has the potential to fill the integrity information gap and ultimately enable the use of condition-based pipeline maintenance. This approach, embodied by a practical au- tomated pipeline damage detection procedure, complements permanently installed guided wave sensors to create a complete pipeline health monitoring solution. Utilising experimen- tal data from a permanently installed guided wave sensor installed on a purpose-built NPS 8 Schedule 40 pipe loop facility at BP's Naperville Campus, it is shown that the procedure is very effective at detecting and quantifying actual damage, thereby achieving the intended aim of this thesis.

Astrophysics - Earth and Planetary Astrophysics - Abstract
We present 3D smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations of the collapse of clumps formed through gravitational instability in the outer part of a protoplanetary disc. The initial conditions are taken directly from a global disc simulation, and a realistic equation of state is used to follow the clumps as they contract over several orders of magnitude in density, approaching the molecular hydrogen dissociation stage. The effects of clump rotation, asymmetries, and radiative cooling are studied. Rotation provides support against fast collapse, but non-axisymmetric modes develop and efficiently transport angular momentum outward, forming a circumplanetary disc. This transport helps the clump reach the dynamical collapse phase, resulting from molecular hydrogen dissociation, on a thousand-year timescale, which is smaller than timescales predicted by some previous spherical 1D collapse models. Extrapolation to the threshold of the runaway hydrogen dissociation indicates that the collapse timescales can be shorter than inward migration timescales, suggesting that clumps could survive tidal disruption and deliver a proto-gas giant to distances of even a few AU from the central star., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS
