Search

Massive star-forming regions exhibit a rich chemistry with complex gas distributions, especially on small scales. While surveys have yielded constraints on typical gas conditions, they often have coarse spatial resolution and limited bandwidths. Thus, to establish an interpretative framework for these efforts, detailed observations that simultaneously provide high sensitivity, spatial resolution, and large bandwidths for a subset of diverse sources are needed. Here, we present wideband (32 GHz) Submillimeter Array observations of four high-mass star-forming regions (G28.20-0.05, G20.08-0.14 N, G35.58-0.03, W33 Main) at subarcsecond resolution, where we detect and spatially-resolve 100s of lines from over 60 molecules, including many complex organic molecules (COMs). The chemical richness of our sample is consistent with an evolutionary sequence from the line-rich hot cores and HC HII regions of G28.20-0.05 and G20.08-0.14 N to the more chemically-modest UC HII regions in G35.58-0.03, followed by the molecule-poor HII region W33 Main. We detect lines across a range of excitation conditions (Eu=20 to >800 K) and from numerous isotopologues, which enables robust estimates of gas properties. We derive nearly constant COM column density ratios that agree with literature values in other low- and high-mass protostellar cores, supporting the idea that COM abundances are set during the pre-stellar phase. In all regions, we identify spatial offsets among different molecular families, due to a combination of source physical structure and chemistry. In particular, we find potential evidence of carbon grain sublimation in G28.20-0.05 and identify an elemental oxygen gradient and rich sulfur-chemistry in G35.58-0.03. We use the H$41\alpha$ recombination line to create templates of the millimeter free-free emission in the ALMA-IMF continuum maps, which allows to separate it from dust emission. This method complements spectral-index information and extrapolation from centimeter wavelength maps. We use the derived maps to estimate the properties of up to 34 HII regions across the ALMA-IMF protoclusters. The hydrogen ionizing-photon rate $Q_0$ and spectral types follow the evolutionary trend proposed by Motte et al. The youngest protoclusters lack detectable ionized gas, followed by protoclusters with increasing numbers of OB stars. The total $Q_0$ increases from $\sim 10^{45}$ s$^{-1}$ to $> 10^{49}$ s$^{-1}$. We used the adjacent He$41\alpha$ line to measure the relative number abundances of helium, finding values consistent with the Galactic interstellar medium, although a few outliers are discussed. A search for sites of maser amplification of the H$41\alpha$ line returned negative results. We looked for possible correlations between the electron densities ($n_e$), emission measures (EM), and $Q_0$ with HII region size $D$. The latter are the better correlated, with $Q_0 \propto D^{2.49\pm0.18}$. This favors interpretations where smaller ultracompact HII regions are not necessarily the less dynamically evolved versions of larger ones, but rather are ionized by less massive stars. Moderate correlations were found between dynamical width $\Delta V_\mathrm{dyn}$ with $D$ and $Q_0$. $\Delta V_\mathrm{dyn}$ increases from about one to two times the ionized-gas sound speed. Finally, an outlier HII region south of W43-MM2 is discussed. We suggest that this source could harbor an embedded stellar or disk wind., Comment: Accepted to AAS Journals (ApJS). Synthesized beam (PSF) synthetic observations with and without the antennas in Mexico are analyzed. For a simple continuum observing setup, we generated visibility files and their associated PSF images for a grid of parameters (robust weighting, tapering, and declination). The tests were done for both the MID and MID+Spiral+Core configurations and their cropped versions without antennas in Mexico. We show that the performance of the Array, in terms of the beam properties, is in general significantly better when both the MID array antennas are present in Northern Mexico and observations target southern sources. At a declination of -40 deg, there are increments in the ellipticity of at least ~1.3X and 1.2X for a tapering of 3.0 and 4.0 mas, if the antennas in Mexico are not included. For the parameter space tested, the changes in ellipticity of the MID and MID+Spiral+Core configurations differ by ~10%. Larger tapering values help to reduce the ellipticity for cropped configurations at all declinations, but it will impose more constraints in terms of angular resolution., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

Filamentary structures are ubiquitously found in high-mass star-forming clouds. To investigate the relationship between filaments and star formation, we carry out the INFANT (INvestigations of massive Filaments ANd sTar formation) survey, a multi-scale, multi-wavelength survey of massive filamentary clouds with ALMA band 3/band 6 and VLA K band. In this first paper, we present the ALMA band 6 continuum observations toward a sample of 8 high-mass star forming filaments. We covered each target with approximately rectangular mosaic field of view with two 12-m array configurations, achieving an angular resolution of $\sim$0.6" (2700 AU at 4.5 kpc) and a continuum rms of $\sim$0.1 mJy/beam ($\sim$0.06 Msun in gas mass assuming 15 K). We identify cores using the getsf and astrodendro and find the former is more robust in terms of both identification and measuring flux densities. We identify in total 183 dense cores (15--36 cores in each cloud) and classify their star formation states via outflow and warm gas tracers. The protostellar cores are statistically more massive than the prestellar cores, possibly indicating further accretion onto cores after formation of protostars. For the high-mass end ($M_\text{core}$ $>$ 1.5 Msun) of the core mass function (CMF) we derive a power-law index of $-$1.15 $\pm$ 0.12 for the whole sample, and $-$1.70 $\pm$ 0.25 for the prestellar population. We also find a steepening trend in CMF with cloud evolution ($-$0.89 $\pm$ 0.15 for the young group v.s. $-$1.44 $\pm$ 0.25 for the evolved group) and discuss its implication for cluster formation., Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures, accepted for ApJ

Variable accretion has been well studied in evolved stages of low-mass stars formation. However, the accretion history in the initial phases of star formation is still a seldom studied topic. The outflows and jets emerging from protostellar objects could shed some light onto their accretion history. We consider the recently studied case of W43-MM1, a protocluster containing 46 outflows driven by 27 protostellar cores. The outflow kinematics of the individual cores and associated knots in W43-MM1 indicate episodic protostellar ejection. We took the observed parameters of an individual core system (core #8) and performed 3D hydrodynamic simulations of such system including episodic changes in the velocity of the outflow. The simulations consist of a collimated jet emerging from a core taking into account one- and two-velocity modes in the variation of the ejection velocity of the jet. In addition, we investigated the effect of including the precession of the jet to the one- and two-velocity mode models. From the simulations, we constructed position-velocity diagrams and compared them with the observations. We find that including a second mode in the ejection velocity, as well as the precession, are required to explain the positions of the outflow knots and other position-velocity features observed in the outflow of core #8 in W43-MM1., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures. We present the combination of ALMA-IMF and single-dish continuum images from the Mustang-2 Galactic Plane Survey (MGPS90) at 3 millimeters and the Bolocam Galactic Plane Survey (BGPS) at 1 millimeter. Six and ten out of the fiffteen ALMA-IMF fields are combined with MGPS90 and BGPS, respectively. The combination is made via the feathering technique. We used the dendrogram algorithm throughout the combined images, and performed further analysis in the six fields with combination in both bands (G012.80, W43-MM1, W43-MM2, W43-MM3, W51-E, W51-IRS2). In these fields, we calculated spectral index maps and used them to separate regions dominated by dust or free-free emission, and then performed further structural analysis. We report the basic physical parameters of the dust-dominated (column densities, masses) and ionized (emission measures, hydrogen ionization photon rates) structures. We also searched for multi-scale relations in the dust-dominated structures across the analyzed fields, finding that the fraction of mass in dendrogram leaves (which we label as "Leaf Mass Eficiency", LME) as a function of molecular gas column density follows a similar trend: a rapid, exponential-like growth, with maximum values approaching 100% in most cases. The observed behaviour of the LME with gas column is tentatively interpreted as an indicator of large star formation activity within the ALMA-IMF protoclusters. The direct comparison between hydrodynamical simulations and observations is needed to improve the physics included in the former and test biases in the latter. Post-processing radiative transfer and synthetic observations are now the standard way to do this. We report on the first application of the \texttt{SKIRT} radiative transfer code to simulations of a star-forming cloud. The synthetic observations are then analyzed following traditional observational workflows. We find that in the early stages of the simulation, stellar radiation is inefficient in heating dust to the temperatures observed in Galactic clouds, thus the addition of an interstellar radiation field is necessary. The spectral energy distribution of the cloud settles rather quickly after $\sim3$ Myr of evolution from the onset of star formation, but its morphology continues to evolve for $\sim8$ Myr due to the expansion of \textsc{Hii} regions and the respective creation of cavities, filaments, and ridges. Modeling synthetic \textit{Herschel} fluxes with 1- or 2-component modified black bodies underestimates total dust masses by a factor of $\sim2$. Spatially-resolved fitting recovers up to about $70\%$ of the intrinsic value. This ``missing mass'' is located in a very cold dust component with temperatures below $10$ K, which does not contribute appreciably to the far-infrared flux. This effect could bias real observations if such dust exists in large amounts. Finally, we tested observational calibrations of the SFR based on infrared fluxes and concluded that they are in agreement when compared to the intrinsic SFR of the simulation averaged over $\sim100$ Myr.

We present ALMA observations with a 800 au resolution and radiative-transfer modelling of the inner part ($r\approx6000$ au) of the ionized accretion flow around a compact star cluster in formation at the center of the luminous ultra-compact (UC) HII region G10.6-0.4. We modeled the flow with an ionized Keplerian disk with and without radial motions in its outer part, or with an external Ulrich envelope. The MCMC fits to the data give total stellar masses $M_\star$ from 120 to $200~M_\odot$, with much smaller ionized-gas masses $M_\mathrm{ion-gas} = 0.2$ to $0.25~M_\odot$. The stellar mass is distributed within the gravitational radius $R_g\approx 1000$ to 1500 au, where the ionized gas is bound. The viewing inclination angle from the face-on orientation is $i = 49$ to $56~\deg$. Radial motions at radii $r > R_g$ converge to $v_{r,0} \approx 8.7$ km/s, or about the speed of sound of ionized gas, indicating that this gas is marginally unbound at most. From additional constraints on the ionizing-photon rate and far-IR luminosity of the region, we conclude that the stellar cluster consists of a few massive stars with $M_\mathrm{star} = 32$ to $60~M_\odot$, or one star in this range of masses accompanied by a population of lower-mass stars. Any active accretion of ionized gas onto the massive (proto)stars is residual. The inferred cluster density is very large, comparable to that reported at similar scales in the Galactic Center. We present Gemini-NIFS, VLT-SINFONI and Keck-OSIRIS observations of near-infrared [Fe II] emission associated with the well-studied jets from three active T Tauri stars; RW Aur A, RY Tau and DG Tau taken from 2012-2021. We primarily covered the redshifted jet from RW Aur A, and the blueshifted jets from RY Tau and DG Tau, to investigate long-term time variabilities potentially related to the activities of mass accretion and/or the stellar magnetic fields. All of these jets consist of several moving knots with tangential velocities of 70-240 km s-1, ejected from the star with different velocities and at irregular time intervals. Via comparison with literature, we identify significant differences in tangential velocities for the DG Tau jet between 1985-2008 and 2008-2021. The sizes of the individual knots appear to increase with time, and in turn, their peak brightnesses in the 1.644-micron emission decreased up to a factor of ~30 during the epochs of our observations. A variety of the decay timescales measured in the [Fe II] 1.644 micron emission can be attributed to different pre-shock conditions if the moving knots are unresolved shocks. However, our data do not exclude the possibility that these knots are due to non-uniform density/temperature distributions with another heating mechanism, or in some cases due to stationary shocks without proper motions. We report new VLA and e-MERLIN high resolution and sensitivity images of the Triple Radio continuum Source in the Serpens star forming region. These observations allowed us to perform a deep multi-frequency, multi-epoch study by exploring the innermost regions (<~100 au) of an intermediate-mass YSO for the first time, with a physical resolution of ~15 au. The kinematic analysis of knots recently ejected by the protostar indicates that the jet is undergoing episodic variations in velocity. In addition, our multi-frequency images reveal striking characteristics, e.g., a highly collimated ionized stream that would be launched at a radial distance of ~0.4 au from the protostar, and a narrow (~28 au wide) ionized cavity that would be excited by the interaction of a wide-angle component with the surrounding toroid of infalling material. In light of these results, we propose the scenario in which both a highly-collimated jet and a wide-angle wind coexist to be the most plausible to explain our observations, either launched by the X-wind or X- plus Disk-wind mechanism., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures. We present the core mass function (CMF) of the massive star-forming clump G33.92+0.11 using 1.3 mm observations obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). With a resolution of 1000 au, this is one of the highest resolution CMF measurements to date. The CMF is corrected by flux and number incompleteness to obtain a sample that is complete for gas masses $M\gtrsim2.0\ M_\odot$. The resulting CMF is well represented by a power-law function ($dN/d\log M\propto M^\Gamma$), whose slope is determined using two different approaches: $i)$ by least-squares fitting of power-law functions to the flux- and number-corrected CMF, and $ii)$ by comparing the observed CMF to simulated samples with similar incompleteness. We provide a prescription to quantify and correct a flattening bias affecting the slope fits in the first approach, which is caused by small-sample or edge effects when the data is represented by either classical histograms or a kernel density estimate, respectively. The resulting slopes from both approaches are in good agreement each other, with $\Gamma=-1.11_{-0.11}^{+0.12}$ being our adopted value. Although this slope appears to be slightly flatter than the Salpeter slope $\Gamma=-1.35$ for the stellar initial mass function (IMF), we find from Monte Carlo simulations that the CMF in G33.92+0.11 is statistically indistinguishable from the Salpeter representation of the stellar IMF. Our results are consistent with the idea that the form of the IMF is inherited from the CMF, at least at high masses and when the latter is observed at high-enough resolution., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Protostellar jets have a fundamental role at the earliest evolution of protostars of all masses. In the case of low-mass (<8 Msun) protostars, strong observational evidence exists that the launching and collimation is due to the X- and/or disk-wind mechanisms. In these models, it is the protostar/disk system that creates all the necessary conditions to launch and collimate the jets near the protostar via strong magnetic fields. The origin of jets from more massive protostars has been investigated much less, in part because of the difficulty of resolving the collimation zone in these more distant objects. Here we present the highest angular resolution observations of a jet powered by a massive protostar, the Cep A HW2 radio jet. We imaged the radio emission at projected distances of only ~20 au from the protostar, resolving the innermost 100 au of a massive protostellar jet for the first time. The morphology of the radio jet emission in this massive object is very different than what is usually observed in jets from low-mass protostars. We found that the outflowing material in HW2 has two components: a wide-angle wind launched from the protostar/disk system, and a highly collimated jet starting at 20-30 au from the protostar. We discuss two possible scenarios: an extension of the classical disk-wind to a massive protostar, or external collimation of a wide-angle wind. Massive star-forming regions exhibit an extremely rich and diverse chemistry, which in principle provides a wealth of molecular probes, as well as laboratories for interstellar prebiotic chemistry. Since the chemical structure of these sources displays substantial spatial variation among species on small scales (${\lesssim}10^4$ au), high angular resolution observations are needed to connect chemical structures to local environments and inform astrochemical models of massive star formation. To address this, we present ALMA 1.3 mm observations toward OB cluster-forming region G10.6-0.4 (hereafter "G10.6") at a resolution of 0.14$^{\prime\prime}$ (700 au). We find highly-structured emission from complex organic molecules (COMs) throughout the central 20,000 au, including two hot molecular cores and several shells or filaments. We present spatially-resolved rotational temperature and column density maps for a large sample of COMs and warm gas tracers. These maps reveal a range of gas substructure in both O- and N-bearing species. We identify several spatial correlations that can be explained by existing models of COM formation, including NH$_2$CHO/HNCO and CH$_3$OCHO/CH$_3$OCH$_3$, but also observe unexpected distributions and correlations which suggest that our current understanding of COM formation is far from complete. Importantly, complex chemistry is observed throughout G10.6, rather than being confined to hot cores. The COM composition appears to be different in the cores compared to the more extended structures, which illustrates the importance of high spatial resolution observations of molecular gas in elucidating the physical and chemical processes associated with massive star formation., Comment: 41 pages, 25 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The formation of filaments in molecular clouds is an important process in star formation. Hub-filament systems (HFSs) are a transition stage connecting parsec-scale filaments and proto-clusters. Understanding the origin of HFSs is crucial to reveal how star formation proceeds from clouds to cores. Here, we report JCMT POL-2 850 $\mu$m polarization and IRAM 30-m C$^{18}$O (2-1) line observations toward the massive HFS G33.92+0.11. The 850 $\mu$m continuum map reveals four major filaments converging to the center of G33.92+0.11 with numerous short filaments connecting to the major filaments at local intensity peaks. We estimate the local orientations of filaments, magnetic field, gravity, and velocity gradients from observations, and we examine their correlations based on their local properties. In the high-density areas, our analysis shows that the filaments tend to align with the magnetic field and local gravity. In the low-density areas, we find that the local velocity gradients tend to be perpendicular to both the magnetic field and local gravity, although the filaments still tend to align with local gravity. A global virial analysis suggests that the gravitational energy overall dominates the magnetic and kinematic energy. Combining local and global aspects, we conclude that the formation of G33.92+0.11 is predominantly driven by gravity, dragging and aligning the major filaments and magnetic field on the way to the inner dense center. Traced by local velocity gradients in the outer diffuse areas, ambient gas might be accreted onto the major filaments directly or via the short filaments., Comment: 32 pages, 23 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

For the active T-Taur star RW Aur A we have performed long-term (~10 yr) monitoring observations of (1) jet imaging in the [Fe II] 1.644-micron emission line using Gemini-NIFS and VLT-SINFONI; (2) optical high-resolution spectroscopy using CFHT-ESPaDOnS; and (3) V-band photometry using the CrAO 1.25-m telescope and AAVSO. The latter two observations confirm the correlation of time variabilities between (A) the Ca II 8542 A and O I 7772 A line profiles associated with magnetospheric accretion, and (B) optical continuum fluxes. The jet images and their proper motions show that four knot ejections occurred at the star over the past ~15 years with an irregular interval of 2-6 years. The time scale and irregularity of these intervals are similar to those of the dimming events seen in the optical photometry data. Our observations show a possible link between remarkable (Delta_V < -1 mag.) photometric rises and jet knot ejections. Observations over another few years may confirm or reject this trend. If confirmed, this would imply that the location of the jet launching region is very close to the star (r <<0.1 au) as predicted by some jet launching models. We present a detailed characterization of the population of compact radio-continuum sources in W51 A using subarcsecond VLA and ALMA observations. We analyzed their 2-cm continuum, the recombination lines (RL's) H77$\alpha$ and H30$\alpha$, and the lines of $\rm H_{2}CO(3_{0,3}-2_{0,2})$, $\rm H_{2}CO(3_{2,1}-2_{2,0})$, and $\rm SO(6_{5}-5_{4})$. We derive diameters for 10/20 sources in the range $D \sim 10^{-3}$ to $\sim 10^{-2}$ pc, thus placing them in the regime of hypercompact HII regions (HC HII's). Their continuum-derived electron densities are in the range $n_{\rm e} \sim 10^4$ to $10^5$ cm$^{-3}$, lower than typically considered for HC HII's. We combined the RL measurements and independently derived $n_{\rm e}$, finding the same range of values but significant offsets for individual measurements between the two methods. We found that most of the sources in our sample are ionized by early B-type stars, and a comparison of $n_{\rm e}$ vs $D$ shows that they follow the inverse relation previously derived for ultracompact (UC) and compact HII's. When determined, the ionized-gas kinematics is always (7/7) indicative of outflow. Similarly, 5 and 3 out of the 8 HC HII's still embedded in a compact core show evidence for expansion and infall motions in the molecular gas, respectively. We hypothesize that there could be two different types of $hypercompact$ ($D< 0.05$ pc) HII regions: those that essentially are smaller, expanding UC HII's; and those that are also $hyperdense$ ($n_{\rm e} > 10^6$ cm$^{-3}$), probably associated with O-type stars in a specific stage of their formation or early life., Comment: The Astrophysical Journal, in press. 23 pages, 9 figures

We report the results of a pilot program for a Green Bank Telescope (GBT) MUSTANG Galactic Plane survey at 3 mm (90 GHz), MGPS90. The survey achieves a typical $1\sigma$ depth of $1-2$ mJy beam$^{-1}$ with a 9" beam. We describe the survey parameters, quality assessment process, cataloging, and comparison with other data sets. We have identified 709 sources over seven observed fields selecting some of the most prominent millimeter-bright regions between $0\deg < \ell < 50\deg$ (total area $\approx 7.5 \deg^2$). The majority of these sources have counterparts at other wavelengths. By applying flux selection criteria to these sources, we successfully recovered several known hypercompact HII (HCHII) regions, but did not confirm any new ones. We identify 126 sources that have mm-wavelength counterparts but do not have cm-wavelength counterparts and are therefore candidate HCHII regions; of these, 10 are morphologically compact and are strong candidates for new HCHII regions. Given the limited number of candidates in the extended area in this survey compared to the relatively large numbers seen in protoclusters W51 and W49, it appears that most HCHII regions exist within dense protoclusters. Comparing the counts of HCHII to ultracompact HII (UCHII) regions, we infer the HCHII region lifetime is 16-46% that of the UCHII region lifetime. We additionally separated the 3 mm emission into dust and free-free emission by comparing with archival 870 $\mu$m and 20 cm data. We analyzed high angular resolution 45.5 GHz images of the W49 North massive star forming region obtained in 1998 and 2016 with the Very Large Array. Most of the ultracompact HII regions show no detectable changes over the time interval of the observations. However, subcomponents B1, B2, G2a and G2c have increased its peak flux densities by values in the range of 3.8 to 21.4 \%. Most interestingly, the cometary region C clearly shows proper motions that at the distance of the region are equivalent to a velocity of 76$\pm$6 km s$^{-1}$ in the plane of the sky. We interpret this region as the ionized bowshock produced by a runaway O6 ZAMS star that was ejected from the eastern edge of Welch's ring about 6,400 years ago., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures,to appear in ApJ

Understanding planet formation requires to discern how dust grows in protoplanetary disks. An important parameter to measure in disks is the maximum dust grain size present. This is usually estimated through measurements of the dust opacity at different millimeter wavelengths assuming optically thin emission and dust opacity dominated by absorption. However, ALMA observations have shown that these assumptions might not be correct in the case of protoplanetary disks, leading to overestimation of particle sizes and to underestimation of the disk's mass. Here, we present an analysis of high quality ALMA and VLA images of the HL Tau protoplanetary disk, covering a wide range of wavelengths, from 0.8 mm to 1 cm, and with a physical resolution of $\sim$7.35 au. We describe a procedure to analyze a set of millimeter images without any assumption about the optical depth of the emission, and including the effects of absorption and scattering in the dust opacity. This procedure allows us to obtain the dust temperature, the dust surface density and the maximum particle size at each radius. In the HL Tau disk, we found that particles have already grown up to a few millimeters in size. We detect differences in the dust properties between dark and bright rings, with dark rings containing low dust density and small dust particles. Different features in the HL Tau disk seem to have different origins. Planet-disk interactions can explain substructure at the external half of the disk, but the internal rings seem to be associated to the presence of snow lines of several molecules.

We report new Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Band 3 (86-100 GHz; $\sim$80 mas angular resolution) and Band 4 (146-160 GHz; $\sim$50 mas angular resolution) observations of the dust continuum emission towards the archetypal and ongoing accretion burst young stellar object FU Ori, which simultaneously covered its companion, FU Ori S. In addition, we present near-infrared (2-2.45 $\mu$m) observations of FU Ori taken with the General Relativity Analysis via VLT InTerferometrY (GRAVITY; $\sim$1 mas angular resolution) instrument on the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). We find that the emission in both FU Ori and FU Ori S at (sub)millimeter and near infrared bands is dominated by structures inward of $\sim$10 au radii. We detected closure phases close to zero from FU Ori with VLTI/GRAVITY, which indicate the source is approximately centrally symmetric and therefore is likely viewed nearly face-on. Our simple model to fit the GRAVITY data shows that the inner 0.4 au radii of the FU Ori disk has a triangular spectral shape at 2-2.45 $\mu$m, which is consistent with the H$_{2}$O and CO absorption features in a $\dot{M}\sim$10$^{-4}$ $M_{\odot}\,yr^{-1}$, viscously heated accretion disk. At larger ($\sim$0.4-10 au) radii, our analysis shows that viscous heating may also explain the observed (sub)millimeter and centimeter spectral energy distribution when we assume a constant, $\sim$10$^{-4}$ $M_{\odot}\,yr^{-1}$ mass inflow rate in this region. This explains how the inner 0.4 au disk is replenished with mass at a modest rate, such that it neither depletes nor accumulates significant masses over its short dynamic timescale. Finally, we tentatively detect evidence of vertical dust settling in the inner 10 au of the FU Ori disk, but confirmation requires more complete spectral sampling in the centimeter bands., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures; Accepted to ApJ

The filamentary infrared dark cloud L1287 is actively forming a dense cluster of low-mass YSOs at its inner $\sim$0.1 pc region. To help understand the origin of this low-mass YSO cluster, the present work aims at resolving the gas structures and kinematics. We have performed $\sim$1$"$ angular resolution ($\sim$930 AU) SMA observations at $\sim$1.3 mm. From a $\sim$2$"$ resolution 1.3 mm continuum image we identified six dense cores, namely SMA1-6 with masses in the range of $\sim0.4-4$ M$_\odot$. From a $\sim$1$"$ resolution 1.3 mm continuum image, we find a high fragmentation level, with 14 compact millimeter sources within 0.1 pc (two of them associated with the known accretion outburst YSOs RNO 1C and RNO 1B). The dense gas tracer DCN (3--2) traces well the dust continuum emission and shows a clear velocity gradient along the NW-SE direction centered at SMA3. There is another velocity gradient with opposite direction around the most luminous YSO IRAS 00338+6312. The fragmentation within 0.1 pc in L1287 is very high compared to other regions at the same spatial scales. The incoherent motions of dense gas flows are sometimes interpreted by being influenced by (proto)stellar feedback (e.g., outflows), which is not yet ruled out in this particular target source. The directions of the velocity gradients traced by DCN are approximately perpendicular to those of the dominant CO outflow(s). Therefore, we alternatively hypothesize that the velocity gradients revealed by DCN trace the convergence from the $\gtrsim$0.1 pc scales infalling motion towards the rotational motions around the more compact ($\sim0.02$ pc) sources. This global molecular gas converging flow may feed the formation of the dense low-mass YSO cluster. IRAS 00338+6312 is the most likely powering source of the dominant CO outflow. In this paper we explore the effects of self-obscuration in protostellar disks with a radially decreasing temperature gradient and a colder midplane. We are motivated by recent reports of resolved dark lanes (`hamburgers') and (sub)mm spectral indices systematically below the ISM value for optically thin dust $\alpha_{\rm ISM} =3.7$. We explore several model grids, scaling disk mass and varying inclination angle $i$ and observing frequency $\nu$ from the VLA Ka band ($\sim 37$ GHz) to ALMA Band 8 ($\sim 405$ GHz). We also consider the effects of decreasing the index of the (sub-)mm dust opacity power law $\beta$ from 1.7 to 1. We find that a distribution of disk masses in the range $M_{\rm disk} = 0.01-2~M_\odot$ is needed to reproduce the observed distribution of spectral indices, and that assuming a fixed $\beta =1.7$ gives better results than $\beta=1$. A wide distribution of disk masses is also needed to produce some cases with $\alpha <2$, as reported for some sources in the literature. Such extremely low spectral indices arise naturally when the selected observing frequencies sample the appropriate change in the temperature structure of the optically thick model disk. Our results show that protostellar disk masses could often be underestimated by $> \times10$, and are consistent with recent hydrodynamical simulations. Although we do not rule out the possibility of some grain growth occurring within the short protostellar timescales, we conclude that self-obscuration needs to be taken into account., Comment: Accepted to The Astrophysical Journal Supplement

We report new, $\sim$1000 AU spatial resolution observations of 225 GHz dust continuum emission towards the OB cluster-forming molecular clump G33.92+0.11. On parsec scales, this molecular clump presents a morphology with several arm-like dense gas structures surrounding the two central massive ($\gtrsim$100 $M_{\odot}$) cores. From the new, higher resolution observations, we identified 28 localized, spatially compact dust continuum emission sources, which may be candidates of young stellar objects. Only one of them is not embedded within known arm-like (or elongated) dense gas structures. The spatial separations of these compact sources can be very well explained by Jeans lengths. We found that G33.92+0.11 may be consistently described by a marginally centrifugally supported, Toomre unstable accretion flow which is approximately in a face-on projection. The arm-like overdensities are natural consequence of the Toomre instability, which can fragment to form young stellar objects in shorter time scales than the timescale of the global clump contraction. On our resolved spatial scales, there is not yet evidence that the fragmentation is halted by turbulence, magnetic field, or stellar feedback., Comment: 24 pages, 18 figures. In this contribution we explore the new science that a Next Generation Very Large Array (ngVLA) would be able to perform on the topics of the youngest HII regions and (proto)stellar jets. Free-free continuum and radio recombination line (RRL) emission are often the only way of peering into the dense envelopes surrounding (proto)stars of all masses, and trace their initial feedback in the form of `radio jets', `hypercompact HII regions', or photoevaporating, partially-ionized flows. Properly disentangling free-free from dust emission is also mandatory in studies of protoplanetary and accretion disks. Current VLA research has reached an impasse in which a population of faint ionized radio sources, probably corresponding to the above mentioned objects, is detected, but their nature is mostly unknown. The magnetic field plays an important role in every stage of the star-formation process from the collapse of the initial protostellar core to the star's arrival on the main sequence. Consequently, the goal of this science case is to explore a wide range of magnetic phenomena that can be investigated using the polarization capabilities of the Next Generation Very Large Array (ngVLA). These include (1) magnetic fields in protostellar cores via polarized emission from aligned dust grains, including in regions optically thick at wavelengths observable by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA); (2) magnetic fields in both protostellar cores and molecular outflows via spectral-line polarization from the Zeeman and Goldreich-Kylafis effects; (3) magnetic fields in protostellar jets via polarized synchrotron emission; and (4) gyrosynchrotron emission from magnetospheres around low-mass stars., Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures. In previous contributions, we have presented an analytical model describing the evolution of molecular clouds (MCs) undergoing hierarchical gravitational contraction. The cloud's evolution is characterized by an initial increase in its mass, density, and star formation rate (SFR) and efficiency (SFE) as it contracts, followed by a decrease of these quantities as newly formed massive stars begin to disrupt the cloud. The main parameter of the model is the maximum mass reached by the cloud during its evolution. Thus, specifying the instantaneous mass and some other variable completely determines the cloud's evolutionary stage. We apply the model to interpret the observed scatter in SFEs of the cloud sample compiled by Lada et al.\ as an evolutionary effect so that, although clouds such as California and Orion A have similar masses, they are in very different evolutionary stages, causing their very different observed SFRs and SFEs. The model predicts that the California cloud will eventually reach a significantly larger total mass than the Orion A cloud. Next, we apply the model to derive estimated ages of the clouds since the time when approximately 25\% of their mass had become molecular. We find ages from $\sim 1.5$ to 27 Myr, with the most inactive clouds being the youngest. Further predictions of the model are that clouds with very low SFEs should have massive atomic envelopes constituting the majority of their gravitational mass, and that low-mass clouds ($M \sim 10^3$-$10^4 \, M_\odot$) end their lives with a mini-burst of star formation, reaching SFRs $\sim 300$-$500\, M_\odot$ Myr$^{-1}$. We present a composite model and radiative transfer simulations of the massive star forming core W33A MM1. The model was tailored to reproduce the complex features observed with ALMA at $\approx 0.2$ arcsec resolution in CH$_3$CN and dust emission. The MM1 core is fragmented into six compact sources coexisting within $\sim 1000$ au. In our models, three of these compact sources are better represented as disc-envelope systems around a central (proto)star, two as envelopes with a central object, and one as a pure envelope. The model of the most prominent object (Main) contains the most massive (proto)star ($M_\star\approx7~M_\odot$) and disc+envelope ($M_\mathrm{gas}\approx0.4~M_\odot$), and is the most luminous ($L_\mathrm{Main} \sim 10^4~L_\odot$). The model discs are small (a few hundred au) for all sources. The composite model shows that the elongated spiral-like feature converging to the MM1 core can be convincingly interpreted as a filamentary accretion flow that feeds the rising stellar system. The kinematics of this filament is reproduced by a parabolic trajectory with focus at the center of mass of the region. Radial collapse and fragmentation within this filament, as well as smaller filamentary flows between pairs of sources are proposed to exist. Our modelling supports an interpretation where what was once considered as a single massive star with a $\sim 10^3$ au disc and envelope, is instead a forming stellar association which appears to be virialized and to form several low-mass stars per high-mass object., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables. We report ALMA observations with resolution $\approx0.5$" at 3 mm of the extended Sgr B2 cloud in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ). We detect 271 compact sources, most of which are smaller than 5000 AU. By ruling out alternative possibilities, we conclude that these sources consist of a mix of hypercompact HII regions and young stellar objects (YSOs). Most of the newly-detected sources are YSOs with gas envelopes which, based on their luminosities, must contain objects with stellar masses $M_*\gtrsim8$ M$_\odot$. Their spatial distribution spread over a $\sim12\times3$ pc region demonstrates that Sgr B2 is experiencing an extended star formation event, not just an isolated `starburst' within the protocluster regions. Using this new sample, we examine star formation thresholds and surface density relations in Sgr B2. While all of the YSOs reside in regions of high column density ($N(H_2)\gtrsim2\times10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$), not all regions of high column density contain YSOs. The observed column density threshold for star formation is substantially higher than that in solar vicinity clouds, implying either that high-mass star formation requires a higher column density or that any star formation threshold in the CMZ must be higher than in nearby clouds. The relation between the surface density of gas and stars is incompatible with extrapolations from local clouds, and instead stellar densities in Sgr B2 follow a linear $\Sigma_*-\Sigma_{gas}$ relation, shallower than that observed in local clouds. Young stellar objects (YSOs) may undergo periods of active accretion (outbursts), during which the protostellar accretion rate is temporarily enhanced by a few orders of magnitude. Whether or not these accretion outburst YSOs possess similar dust/gas reservoirs to each other, and whether or not their dust/gas reservoirs are similar as quiescent YSOs, are issues not yet clarified. The aim of this work is to characterize the millimeter thermal dust emission properties of a statistically significant sample of long and short duration accretion outburst YSOs (i.e., FUors and EXors) and the spectroscopically identified candidates of accretion outbursting YSOs (i.e., FUor-like objects). We have carried out extensive Submillimeter Array (SMA) observations mostly at $\sim$225 GHz (1.33 mm) and $\sim$272 GHz (1.10 mm), from 2008 to 2017. We covered accretion outburst YSOs located at $<$1 kpc distances from the solar system. We analyze all the existing SMA data of such objects, both published and unpublished, in a coherent way to present a millimeter interferometric database of 29 objects. We obtained 21 detections at $>$3-$\sigma$ significance. Detected sources except for the two cases of V883 Ori and NGC 2071 MM3 were observed with $\sim$1$"$ angular resolution. Overall our observed targets show a systematically higher millimeter luminosity distribution than those of the $M_{*}>$0.3 $M_{\odot}$ Class II YSOs in the nearby ($\lesssim$400 pc) low-mass star-forming molecular clouds (e.g., Taurus, Lupus, Upp Scorpio, and Chameleon I). In addition, at 1 mm our observed confirmed binaries or triple-system sources are systematically fainter than the rest of the sources even though their 1 mm fluxes are broadly distributed. We conducted a detailed radiative transfer modeling of the dust emission from the circumstellar disk around HL Tau. The goal of our study is to derive the surface density profile of the inner disk and its structure. In addition to the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array images at Band 3 (2.9mm), Band 6 (1.3mm), and Band 7 (0.87mm), the most recent Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) observations at 7mm were included in the analysis. A simulated annealing algorithm was invoked to search for the optimum model. The radiative transfer analysis demonstrates that most radial components (i.e., >6AU) of the disk become optically thin at a wavelength of 7mm, which allows us to constrain, for the first time, the dust density distribution in the inner region of the disk. We found that a homogeneous grain size distribution is not sufficient to explain the observed images at different wavelengths simultaneously, while models with a shallower grain size distribution in the inner disk work well. We found clear evidence that larger grains are trapped in the first bright ring. Our results imply that dust evolution has already taken place in the disk at a relatively young (i.e., ~1Myr) age. We compared the midplane temperature distribution, optical depth, and properties of various dust rings with those reported previously. We have modified the iterative procedure introduced by Lin et al. (2016), to systematically combine the submm images taken from ground based (e.g., CSO, JCMT, APEX) and space (e.g., Herschel, Planck) telescopes. We applied the updated procedure to observations of three well studied Infrared Dark Clouds (IRDCs): G11.11-0.12, G14.225-0.506 and G28.34+0.06, and then performed single-component, modified black-body fits to derive $\sim$10$"$ resolution dust temperature and column density maps. The derived column density maps show that these three IRDCs exhibit complex filamentary structures embedding with rich clumps/cores. We compared the column density probability distribution functions (N-PDFs) and two-point correlation (2PT) functions of the column density field between these IRDCs with several OB cluster-forming regions. Based on the observed correlation and measurements, and complementary hydrodynamical simulations for a 10$^{4}$ $\rm M_{\odot}$ molecular cloud, we hypothesize that cloud evolution can be better characterized by the evolution of the (column) density distribution function and the relative power of dense structures as a function of spatial scales, rather than merely based on the presence of star-forming activity. Based on the small analyzed sample, we propose four evolutionary stages, namely: {\it cloud integration, stellar assembly, cloud pre-dispersal and dispersed-cloud.} The initial {\it cloud integration} stage and the final {\it dispersed cloud} stage may be distinguished from the two intermediate stages by a steeper than $-$4 power-law index of the N-PDF. High-mass stars have generally been assumed to accrete most of their mass while already contracted onto the main sequence, but this hypothesis has not been observationally tested. We present ALMA observations of a 3 x 1.5 pc area in the W51 high-mass star-forming complex. We identify dust continuum sources and measure the gas and dust temperature through both rotational diagram modeling of CH3OH and brightness-temperature-based limits. The observed region contains three high-mass YSOs that appear to be at the earliest stages of their formation, with no signs of ionizing radiation from their central sources. The data reveal high gas and dust temperatures (T > 100 K) extending out to about 5000 AU from each of these sources. There are no clear signs of disks or rotating structures down to our 1000 AU resolution. The extended warm gas provides evidence that, during the process of forming, these high-mass stars heat a large volume and correspondingly large mass of gas in their surroundings, inhibiting fragmentation and therefore keeping a large reservoir available to feed from. By contrast, the more mature massive stars that illuminate compact H ii regions have little effect on their surrounding dense gas, suggesting that these main sequence stars have completed most or all of their accretion. The high luminosity of the massive protostars (L > 10^4 solar luminosities), combined with a lack of centimeter continuum emission from these sources, implies that they are not on the main sequence while they accrete the majority of their mass; instead, they may be bloated and cool., Comment: Accepted in ApJ. We resolved FU Ori at 29-37 GHz using the JVLA with $\sim$0$''$.07 resolution, and performed the complementary JVLA 8-10 GHz observations, the SMA 224 GHz and 272 GHz observations, and compared with archival ALMA 346 GHz observations to obtain the SEDs. Our 8-10 GHz observations do not find evidence for the presence of thermal radio jets, and constrain the radio jet/wind flux to at least 90 times lower than the expected value from the previously reported bolometric luminosity-radio luminosity correlation. The emission at $>$29 GHz may be dominated by the two spatially unresolved sources, which are located immediately around FU Ori and its companion FU Ori S, respectively. Their deconvolved radii at 33 GHz are only a few au. The 8-346 GHz SEDs of FU Ori and FU Ori S cannot be fit by constant spectral indices (over frequency). The more sophisticated models for SEDs suggest that the $>$29 GHz emission is contributed by a combination of free-free emission from ionized gas, and thermal emission from optically thick and optically thin dust components. We hypothesize that dust in the innermost parts of the disks ($\lesssim$0.1 au) has been sublimated, and thus the disks are no more well shielded against the ionizing photons. The estimated overall gas and dust mass based on SED modeling, can be as high as a fraction of a solar mass, which is adequate for developing disk gravitational instability. Our present explanation for the observational data is that the massive inflow of gas and dust due to disk gravitational instability or interaction with a companion/intruder, was piled up at the few au scale due to the development of a deadzone with negligible ionization. The piled up material subsequently triggered the thermal and the MRI instabilities when the ionization fraction in the inner sub-au scale region exceeded a threshold value, leading to the high protostellar accretion rate., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, referee reported received and replied

We have developed an iterative procedure to systematically combine the millimeter and submillimeter images of OB cluster-forming molecular clouds, which were taken by ground based (CSO, JCMT, APEX, IRAM-30m) and space telescopes (Herschel, Planck). For the seven luminous ($L$$>$10$^{6}$ $L_{\odot}$) Galactic OB cluster-forming molecular clouds selected for our analyses, namely W49A, W43-Main, W43-South, W33, G10.6-0.4, G10.2-0.3, G10.3-0.1, we have performed single-component, modified black-body fits to each pixel of the combined (sub)millimeter images, and the Herschel PACS and SPIRE images at shorter wavelengths. The $\sim$10$"$ resolution dust column density and temperature maps of these sources revealed dramatically different morphologies, indicating very different modes of OB cluster-formation, or parent molecular cloud structures in different evolutionary stages. The molecular clouds W49A, W33, and G10.6-0.4 show centrally concentrated massive molecular clumps that are connected with approximately radially orientated molecular gas filaments. The W43-Main and W43-South molecular cloud complexes, which are located at the intersection of the Galactic near 3-kpc (or Scutum) arm and the Galactic bar, show a widely scattered distribution of dense molecular clumps/cores over the observed $\sim$10 pc spatial scale. The relatively evolved sources G10.2-0.3 and G10.3-0.1 appear to be affected by stellar feedback, and show a complicated cloud morphology embedded with abundant dense molecular clumps/cores. We find that with the high angular resolution we achieved, our visual classification of cloud morphology can be linked to the systematically derived statistical quantities (i.e., the enclosed mass profile, the column density probability distribution function, the two-point correlation function of column density, and the probability distribution function of clump/core separations)., Comment: ApJ accepted, Some figures in appendix are omitted

We report the discovery of a dwarf protoplanetary disk around the star XZ Tau B that shows all the features of a classical transitional disk but on a much smaller scale. The disk has been imaged with the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA), revealing that its dust emission has a quite small radius of ~ 3.4 au and presents a central cavity of ~ 1.3 au in radius that we attribute to clearing by a compact system of orbiting (proto)planets. Given the very small radii involved, evolution is expected to be much faster in this disk (observable changes in a few months) than in classical disks (observable changes requiring decades) and easy to monitor with observations in the near future. Supermassive black holes in galaxy centres can grow by the accretion of gas, liberating energy that might regulate star formation on galaxy-wide scales. The nature of the gaseous fuel reservoirs that power black hole growth is nevertheless largely unconstrained by observations, and is instead routinely simplified as a smooth, spherical inflow of very hot gas. Recent theory and simulations instead predict that accretion can be dominated by a stochastic, clumpy distribution of very cold molecular clouds - a departure from the "hot mode" accretion model - although unambiguous observational support for this prediction remains elusive. Here we report observations that reveal a cold, clumpy accretion flow towards a supermassive black hole fuel reservoir in the nucleus of the Abell 2597 Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG), a nearby (redshift z=0.0821) giant elliptical galaxy surrounded by a dense halo of hot plasma. Under the right conditions, thermal instabilities can precipitate from this hot gas, producing a rain of cold clouds that fall toward the galaxy's centre, sustaining star formation amid a kiloparsec-scale molecular nebula that inhabits its core. The observations show that these cold clouds also fuel black hole accretion, revealing "shadows" cast by the molecular clouds as they move inward at about 300 kilometres per second towards the active supermassive black hole in the galaxy centre, which serves as a bright backlight. Corroborating evidence from prior observations of warmer atomic gas at extremely high spatial resolution, along with simple arguments based on geometry and probability, indicate that these clouds are within the innermost hundred parsecs of the black hole, and falling closer towards it., Comment: Published in the June 9th, 2016 issue of Nature

We present new JVLA observations of the high-mass cluster-forming region W51A from 2 to 16 GHz with resolution ${\theta}_{fwhm} \approx$ 0.3 - 0.5". The data reveal a wealth of observational results: (1) Currently-forming, very massive (proto-O) stars are traced by o-H2CO $2_{1,1}-2_{1,2}$ emission, suggesting that this line can be used efficiently as a massive protostar tracer. (2) There is a spatially distributed population of $\sim$mJy continuum sources, including hypercompact H ii regions and candidate colliding wind binaries, in and around the W51 proto-clusters. (3) There are two clearly detected protoclusters, W51e and W51 IRS2, that are gas-rich but may have most of their mass in stars within their inner $\sim$ 0.05 pc. The majority of the bolometric luminosity in W51 most likely comes from a third population of OB stars between these clusters. The presence of a substantial population of exposed O-stars coincident with a population of still-forming massive stars, along with a direct measurement of the low mass loss rate via ionized gas outflow from W51 IRS2, together imply that feedback is ineffective at halting star formation in massive protoclusters. Instead, feedback may shut off the large-scale accretion of diffuse gas onto the W51 protoclusters, implying that they are evolving towards a state of gas exhaustion rather than gas expulsion. Recent theoretical models predict gas exhaustion to be a necessary step in the formation of gravitationally bound stellar clusters, and our results provide an observational validation of this process., Comment: Accepted to A&A. The first long-baseline ALMA campaign resolved the disk around the young star HL Tau into a number of axisymmetric bright and dark rings. Despite the very young age of HL Tau these structures have been interpreted as signatures for the presence of (proto)planets. The ALMA images triggered numerous theoretical studies based on disk-planet interactions, magnetically driven disk structures, and grain evolution. Of special interest are the inner parts of disks, where terrestrial planets are expected to form. However, the emission from these regions in HL Tau turned out to be optically thick at all ALMA wavelengths, preventing the derivation of surface density profiles and grain size distributions. Here, we present the most sensitive images of HL Tau obtained to date with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array at 7.0 mm wavelength with a spatial resolution comparable to the ALMA images. At this long wavelength the dust emission from HL Tau is optically thin, allowing a comprehensive study of the inner disk. We obtain a total disk dust mass of 0.001 - 0.003 Msun, depending on the assumed opacity and disk temperature. Our optically thin data also indicate fast grain growth, fragmentation, and formation of dense clumps in the inner densest parts of the disk. Our results suggest that the HL Tau disk may be actually in a very early stage of planetary formation, with planets not already formed in the gaps but in the process of future formation in the bright rings., Comment: Accepted by The Astrophysical Journal Letters

We present monitoring observations of the active T Tauri star RW Aur, from 2010 October to 2015 January, using optical high-resolution (R>10000) spectroscopy with CFHT-ESPaDOnS. Optical photometry in the literature shows bright, stable fluxes over most of this period, with lower fluxes (by 2-3 mag.) in 2010 and 2014. In the bright period our spectra show clear photospheric absorption, complicated variation in the Ca II 8542 A emission}profile shapes, and a large variation in redshifted absorption in the O I 7772 and 8446 A and He I 5876 A lines, suggesting unstable mass accretion during this period. In contrast, these line profiles are relatively uniform during the faint periods, suggesting stable mass accretion. During the faint periods the photospheric absorption lines are absent or marginal, and the averaged Li I profile shows redshifted absorption due to an inflow. We discuss (1) occultation by circumstellar material or a companion and (2) changes in the activity of mass accretion to explain the above results, together with near-infrared and X-ray observations from 2011-2015. We report Submillimeter Array (SMA) 1.3 mm high angular resolution observations towards the four EXor type outbursting young stellar objects (YSOs) VY Tau, V1118 Ori, V1143 Ori, and NY Ori. The data mostly show low dust masses $M_{dust}$ in the associated circumstellar disks. Among the sources, NY Ori possesses a relatively massive disk with $M_{dust} \sim 9 \times 10^{-4}$ $M_{\odot}$. V1118 Ori has a marginal detection equivalent to $M_{dust} \sim 6 \times 10^{-5}$ $M_{\odot}$. V1143 Ori has a non-detection also equivalent to $M_{dust} < 6 \times 10^{-5}$ $M_{\odot}$. For the nearest source VY Tau, we get a surprising non-detection which provides a stringent upper limit $M_{dust} < 6 \times 10^{-6}$ $M_{\odot}$. We interpret our findings as suggesting that the gas and dust reservoirs that feed the short duration, repetitive optical outbursts seen in some EXors may be limited to the small scale, innermost region of their circumstellar disks. This hot dust may have escaped our detection limits. This paper discusses compelling science cases for a future long-baseline interferometer operating at millimeter and centimeter wavelengths, like the proposed Next Generation Vary Large Array (ngVLA). We report on the activities of the Cradle of Life science working group, which focused on the formation of low- and high-mass stars, the formation of planets and evolution of protoplanetary disks, the physical and compositional study of Solar System bodies, and the possible detection of radio signals from extraterrestrial civilizations. We propose 19 scientific projects based on the current specification of the ngVLA. Five of them are highlighted as possible Key Science Projects: (1) Resolving the density structure and dynamics of the youngest HII regions and high-mass protostellar jets, (2) Unveiling binary/multiple protostars at higher resolution, (3) Mapping planet formation regions in nearby disks on scales down to 1 AU, (4) Studying the formation of complex molecules, and (5) Deep atmospheric mapping of giant planets in the Solar System. For each of these projects, we discuss the scientific importance and feasibility. We present high angular resolution ($\sim$0.94$"$) $^{12}$CO(1-0) Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations obtained during the 2014 long baseline campaign from the eruptive bipolar flow from the multiple XZ Tau stellar system discovered by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). These observations reveal, for the first time, the kinematics of the molecular flow. The kinematics of the different ejections close to XZ Tau reveal a rotating and expanding structure with a southeast-northwest velocity gradient. The youngest eruptive bubbles unveiled in the optical HST images are inside of this molecular expanding structure. Additionally, we report a very compact and collimated bipolar outflow emanating from XZ Tau A, which indicates that the eruptive outflow is indeed originating from this object. The mass (3 $\times$ 10$^{-7}$ $M_\odot$) and energetics (E$_{kin}$ $=$ 3 $\times$ 10$^{37}$ ergs) for the collimated outflow are comparable with those found in molecular outflows associated with young brown dwarfs., Comment: Accepted to ApJ Letters

There is increasing evidence that episodic accretion is a common phenomenon in Young Stellar Objects (YSOs). Recently, the source HOPS 383 in Orion was reported to have a $\times 35$ mid-infrared -- and bolometric -- luminosity increase between 2004 and 2008, constituting the first clear example of a class 0 YSO (a protostar) with a large accretion burst. The usual assumption that in YSOs accretion and ejection follow each other in time needs to be tested. Radio jets at centimeter wavelengths are often the only way of tracing the jets from embedded protostars. We searched the Very Large Array archive for the available observations of the radio counterpart of HOPS 383. The data show that the radio flux of HOPS 383 varies only mildly from January 1998 to December 2014, staying at the level of $\sim 200$ to 300 $\mu$Jy in the X band ($\sim 9$ GHz), with a typical uncertainty of 10 to 20 $\mu$Jy in each measurement. We interpret the absence of a radio burst as suggesting that accretion and ejection enhancements do not follow each other in time, at least not within timescales shorter than a few years. Time monitoring of more objects and specific predictions from simulations are needed to clarify the details of the connection betwen accretion and jets/winds in YSOs., Comment: ApJ Letters, in press

How rapidly collapsing parsec-scale massive molecular clumps feed high-mass stars, and how they fragment to form OB clusters, have been outstanding questions in the field of star-formation. In this work, we report the resolved structures and kinematics of the approximately face-on, rotating massive molecular clump, G33.92+0.11. Our high resolution Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) images show that the spiral arm-like gas overdensities form in the eccentric gas accretion streams. First, we resolved that the dominant part of the $\sim$0.6 pc scale massive molecular clump (3.0$^{+2.8}_{-1.4}$$\cdot$10$^{3}$ $M_{\odot}$) G33.92+0.11 A is tangled with several 0.5-1 pc size molecular arms spiraling around it, which may be connected further to exterior gas accretion streams. Within G33.92+0.11 A, we resolved the $\sim$0.1 pc width gas mini-arms connecting with the two central massive (100-300 $M_{\odot}$) molecular cores. The kinematics of arms and cores elucidate a coherent accretion flow continuing from large to small scales. We demonstrate that the large molecular arms are indeed the cradles of dense cores, which are likely current or future sites of high-mass star formation. Since these deeply embedded massive molecular clumps preferentially form the highest mass stars in the clusters, we argue that dense cores fed by or formed within molecular arms play a key role in making the upper end of the stellar and core mass functions., Comment: 20 pages, formally published by ApJ

We present high angular resolution ($\sim$ 0.3$"$) submillimeter continuum (0.85 mm) and line observations of the O-type protostar IRAS 16547$-$4247 carried out with the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA). In the 0.85 mm continuum band, the observations revealed two compact sources (with a separation of 2$"$), one of them associated with IRAS 16547$-$4247, and the other one to the west. Both sources are well resolved angularly, revealing a clumpy structure. On the other hand, the line observations revealed a rich variety of molecular species related to both continuum sources. In particular, we found a large number of S-bearing molecules, such as the rare molecule methyl mercaptan (CH$_3$SH). At scales larger than 10,000 AU, molecules (e.g., SO$_2$ or OCS) mostly with low excitation temperatures in the upper states (E$_k$ $\lesssim$ 300 K) are present in both millimeter continuum sources, and show a southeast-northwest velocity gradient of 7 km s$^{-1}$ over 3$"$ (165 km s$^{-1}$ pc$^{-1}$). We suggest that this gradient probably is produced by the thermal (free-free) jet emerging from this object with a similar orientation at the base. At much smaller scales (about 1000 AU), molecules with high excitation temperatures (E$_k$ $\gtrsim$ 500 K) are tracing a rotating structure elongated perpendicular to the orientation of the thermal jet, which we interpret as a candidate disk surrounding IRAS 16547$-$4247. The dynamical mass corresponding to the velocity gradient of the candidate to disk is about 20 M$_\odot$, which is consistent with the bolometric luminosity of IRAS 16547$-$4247., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

Photoevaporation due to high-energy stellar photons is thought to be one of the main drivers of protoplanetary disk dispersal. The fully or partially ionized disk surface is expected to produce free-free continuum emission at centimeter (cm) wavelengths that can be routinely detected with interferometers such as the upgraded Very Large Array (VLA). We use deep (rms noise down to 8 $\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ in the field of view center) 3.5 cm maps of the nearby (130 pc) Corona Australis (CrA) star formation (SF) region to constrain disk photoevaporation models. We find that the radio emission from disk sources in CrA is surprisingly faint. Only 3 out of 10 sources within the field of view are detected, with flux densities of order $10^2$ $\mu$Jy. However, a significant fraction of their emission is non-thermal. Typical upper limits for non-detections are $3\sigma\sim 60~\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$. Assuming analytic expressions for the free-free emission from extreme-UV (EUV) irradiation, we derive stringent upper limits to the ionizing photon luminosity impinging on the disk surface $\Phi_\mathrm{EUV}<1-4\times10^{41}$ s$^{-1}$. These limits constrain $\Phi_\mathrm{EUV}$ to the low end of the values needed by EUV-driven photoevaporation models to clear protoplanetary disks in the observed few Myr timescale. Therefore, at least in CrA, EUV-driven photoevaporation is not likely to be the main agent of disk dispersal. We also compare the observed X-ray luminosities $L_X$ of disk sources with models in which photoevaporation is driven by such photons. Although predictions are less specific than for the EUV case, most of the observed fluxes (upper limits) are roughly consistent with the (scaled) predictions. We summarize our comprehensive gas surveys of some of the most luminous, deeply embedded (optically obscured) star formation regions in the Milky Way, which are the local cases of massive star clusters and/or associations in the making. Our approach emphasizes multi-scale, multi-resolution imaging in dust and free-free continuum, as well as in molecular- and hydrogen recombination lines, to trace the multiple gas components from 0.1 pc (core scale) all the way up to the scales of the entire giant molecular cloud (GMC), or $\sim 100$ pc. We highlight our results in W49A, the most luminous Galactic star formation region ($L\sim 10^7~L_\odot$), which appears to be forming a young massive cluster (or a binary star cluster) with $M_\star > 5\times10^4~M_\odot$ that may remain bound after gas dispersal. We report JVLA 8-10 GHz ($\lambda$=3.0-3.7 cm) monitoring observations toward the YSO cluster R Coronae Australis (R\,CrA), taken in 2012, from March 15 to September 12. These observations were planned to measure the radio flux variabilities in timescales from 0.5 hours to several days, to tens of days, and up to $\sim$200 days. We found that among the YSOs detectable in individual epochs, in general, the most reddened objects in the \textit{Spitzer} observations show the highest mean 3.5 cm Stokes \textit{I} emission, and the lowest fractional variabilities on $<$200-day timescales. The brightest radio flux emitters in our observations are the two reddest sources IRS7W and IRS7E. In addition, by comparing with observations taken in 1996-1998 and 2005, we found that the radio fluxes of these two sources have increased by a factor $\sim$1.5. The mean 3.5-cm fluxes of the three Class I/II sources IRSI, IRS2, and IRS6 appear to be correlated with their accretion rates derived by a previous near infrared line survey. The weakly accreting Class I/II YSOs, or those in later evolutionary stages, present radio flux variability on $<$0.5-hour timescales. Some YSOs were detected only during occasional flaring events. An international consortium is presently constructing a beamformer for the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile that will be available as a facility instrument. The beamformer will aggregate the entire collecting area of the array into a single, very large aperture. The extraordinary sensitivity of phased ALMA, combined with the extremely fine angular resolution available on baselines to the Northern Hemisphere, will enable transformational new very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations in Bands 6 and 7 (1.3 and 0.8 mm) and provide substantial improvements to existing VLBI arrays in Bands 1 and 3 (7 and 3 mm). The ALMA beamformer will have impact on a variety of scientific topics, including accretion and outflow processes around black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGN), tests of general relativity near black holes, jet launch and collimation from AGN and microquasars, pulsar and magnetar emission processes, the chemical history of the universe and the evolution of fundamental constants across cosmic time, maser science, and astrometry., Comment: The science case for the ALMA beamformer is a living document with input from a broad cross-section of the astronomical community. Compared to their centimeter-wavelength counterparts, millimeter recombination lines (RLs) are intrinsically brighter and are free of pressure broadening. We report observations of RLs (H30alpha at 231.9 GHz, H53alpha at 42.9 GHz) and the millimeter and centimeter continuum toward the Becklin-Neugebauer (BN) object in Orion, obtained from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Science Verification archive and the Very Large Array (VLA). The RL emission appears to be arising from the slowly-moving, dense (Ne=8.4x10^6 cm^-3) base of the ionized envelope around BN. This ionized gas has a relatively low electron temperature (Te<4900 K) and small (<<10 km s^-1) bulk motions. Comparing our continuum measurements with previous (non)detections, it is possible that BN has large flux variations in the millimeter. However, dedicated observations with a uniform setup are needed to confirm this.
