Abstract

Aim of this work was to investigate the wettability of natural fibres reinforced epoxy composites, subjected to aging tests performed on two different laminates. The first laminate was constituted by stacking ten layers of bidirectional flax fabrics. The second one was produced by replacing two external flax layers with two layers of basalt mat, for each side of the laminate. Both laminates were exposed to salt-fog environmental conditions, according to ASTM B 117 standard, for 60 days. The results of wettability were compared with those of the water uptake test. Moreover, an analysis of variance was performed in order to evaluate the significance of the parameters that influence the wettability of the structures and their interaction.

21. Three-Point Flexural Properties of Bonded Reinforcement Elements for Pleasure Craft Decks.

Abstract

The aim of this work was both to study the performances of pleasure craft reinforced components, bonded using a structural adhesive, and to compare them with those obtained using over-lamination as joining system, typically employed in the shipbuilding. With such aim, two different lots of components were prepared: in the first lot, the reinforcement structures were laminated directly on the investigated composite components and, in the second one; they were made separately in a mould and, then, bonded to the composite components. This last method allowed to evaluate the introduction of a product/process innovation in a field typically unwilling to innovation, still tied to craft, and non-standardized procedures. The results of bending tests, performed in order to evaluate the mechanical behaviour of the reinforced components, evidenced the goodness of this innovative design choice. Abstract

Polymeric materials can be welded by the laser transmission welding technique in order to join two or more sheets. At the interface of the polymer sheets, the released energy induces melting that is assisted by pressure, producing a fast and resistant welding. In this research, single-lap polymeric joints of biomedical ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene sheets were realized; one of the two polymer sheets was doped, at different concentrations, with carbon nanomaterials as a laser absorbent filler. A pulsed neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet laser operating in the wavelength of 532 nm and of 1064 nm with an intensity of the order of 109 W/cm2 was employed to obtain a joint at the interface between the transparent polymer and the absorbent one. The mechanical shear resistance of the prepared joints was related to the optical absorption feature of the polymeric materials. Besides, surface analyses such as hardness, roughness and wettability in different inorganic and organic fluids were presented and discussed. The result of characterization analyses indicated the best filler amount in order to have a mechanically resistant joint with surface properties also suitable for the biomedical employment. Abstract

The purpose of this research is to estimate the causal and/or pre-existing causal influence of some working factors, such as the standing (position) in pelvic pain syndrome, in relation to the reduction in working performance.The research was carried out by means of an inclusive questionnaire, the purpose being to analyse anamnestic and working information. The questionnaire was proposed to a group of female sanitary staff selected in relation to their working activity.Examination of the questionnaire shows prominently the association between pelvic pain and orthostatic working activity, kept not below 4-6 hours each duty. In fact, 70% of the people selected have reported this mutual relationship.Working activities in the orthostatic position can produce pelvic pain, whose origin and intensity seem to be related to extended orthostatic working activity. The mechanism by which the upright position can produce an outbreak of pelvic pain in women seems to be linked to the compression on abdominal vessels, with slowing-down and reduction of the hematic uterine discharge.
