7. Long-term monitoring of Jupiter's synchrotron radiation with the Nancay Radio Telescope including the collision with Comet P/Shoemaker-Levy 9

Abstract

The jovian synchrotron emission has been monitored with the Nancay radio telescope at 1410 MHz (21.3 cm), 1666 MHz (18.0 cm), and 3300 MHz (9.1 cm) from 1 April 1994 to 17 April 1995. Between 13 and 31 July 1994, the nonthermal flux density increases by 20, 25, and 55% respectively at 21.3, 18.0, and 9.1 cm, compared to the preencounter levels. The east-west diameter of the emitting region starts to broaden in early August 1994, most noticeably in the vertical polarization where the increase reaches 35% in early September. In April 1995, neither the flux nor the width has yet recovered its preencounter value. All our data favor a broadening of the pitch angle distribution and we suggest that the magnetic latitude of the impacts has played a major role in selecting the L shells where the radiation belts have been modified. Finally, one should not exclude the possibility of other types of variations, related or unrelated to the collision, like 'natural' variations of the jovian synchrotron emission, which can add to the overall swell of the radiation belts.
