Abstract

While it is well accepted that climate change and growing water needs affect long-term sustainable water resources management, performing accurate simulations of water cycle and energy balance dynamics at regional scale remains a challenging task.Traditional Soil-Vegetation-Atmosphere-Transfer (SVAT) models are used for numerical surface water and energy simulations. These models, by conception, do not account for the groundwater lower boundary that permits a full hydrosystem representation. Conversely, while addressing important features such as subsurface heterogeneity and river–aquifer exchanges, groundwater models often integrate overly simplified upper boundary conditions ignoring soil heating and the impacts of vegetation processes on radiation fluxes and root-zone uptakes. In this paper, one of the first attempts to jointly model water and energy fluxes with a special focus on both surface and groundwater at the regional scale is proposed on the Seine hydrosystem (78,650 km$^{2}$), which overlays one of the main multi-aquifer systems of Europe.This study couples the SVAT model ORCHIDEE and the process-based hydrological–hydrogeological model CaWaQS, which describes water fluxes, via a one-way coupling approach from ORCHIDEE toward CaWaQS based on the blueprint published by [de Marsily et al., 1978]. An original transport library based on the resolution of the diffusion/advection transport equation was developed in order to simulate heat transfer in both 1D-river networks and pseudo-3D aquifer systems. In addition, an analytical solution is used to simulate heat transport through aquitards and streambeds. Simulated ORCHIDEE surface water and energy fluxes feed fast surface runoff and slow recharge respectively and then is used as CaWaQS forcings to compute river discharges, hydraulic heads and temperature dynamics through space and time, within each of the hydrosystem compartments. The tool makes it possible to establish a fully consistent water and energy budget over a period of 17 years. It also simulates temperature evolution in each aquifer and evaluates that river thermal regulation mostly relies by order of importance on short wave radiations (109.3 W${\cdot }$m$^{-2}$), groundwater fluxes (48.1 W${\cdot }$m$^{-2}$) and surface runoff (22.7 W${\cdot }$m$^{-2}$).

Abstract

Environmental pollution is one of the main challenges faced by humanity. By their ubiquity and vast range of metabolic capabilities, microorganisms are affected by pollution with consequences on their host organisms and on the functioning of their environment and also play key roles in the fate of pollutants through the degradation, transformation and transfer of organic or inorganic compounds. They are thus crucial for the development of nature-based solutions to reduce pollution and of bio-based solutions for environmental risk assessment of chemicals. At the intersection between microbial ecology, toxicology and biogeochemistry, microbial ecotoxicology is a fast-expanding research area aiming to decipher the interactions between pollutants and microorganisms. This perspective paper gives an overview of the main research challenges identified by the Ecotoxicomic network within the emerging One Health framework and in the light of ongoing interest in biological approaches to environmental remediation and of the current state of the art in microbial ecology. We highlight prevailing knowledge gaps and pitfalls in exploring complex interactions among microorganisms and their environment in the context of chemical pollution and pinpoint areas of research where future efforts are needed.

Conversely, groundwater models for saturated and unsaturated water flow, while addressing important features such as subsurface heterogeneity and stream-aquifer exchanges, often have overly simplified upper boundary conditions that ignore soil heating, vegetation processes on radiation fluxes, and root-zone uptake. One of the first attempts of jointly modeling water and energy fluxes with a special focus on both surface and groundwater at the regional scale is demonstrated on the Seine basin ( 78,650 km² ), which overlays the main aquifer system of Europe. The tool couples the SVAT model ORCHIDEE and the process-based hydrological–hydrogeological model CaWaQS. An original transport library based on the resolution of the diffusion/advection transport equation was written to simulate heat transfer in both 1D river networks, and pseudo-3D aquifer systems. Water and energy fluxes fractionated into fast surface run-off and slow infiltration towards the aquifer system are calculated by ORCHIDEE. The model allows us to establish the first fully consistent water and energy budget over a pluriannual period of time, for which the hydrological variables are stationary. It also simulates temperature evolution in each aquifer and evaluates river thermal regulation by groundwater along the river network. Finally, climate change impacts on the Seine basin hydrological and thermal functioning are investigated using the calibrated model.

Abstract

As a common good, water is essential for many uses related to human activities : domestic needs (including drinking water supply), agricultural usages, industrial applications, energy requirements and recreational uses. Urbanization, which concentrates a high population density, as well as the economic activities of the Seine basin generate an increase in water and energy needs. In addition, climate change has an impact on the sustainable management of resources in the long term. A precise understanding of water and energy fluxes at the basin scale is therefore becoming a strategic necessity in order to adapt resource management. In this context, the PIREN-Seine teams are developing an integrated modelling tool to simulate water and heat exchanges between the atmosphere and the surface (soil, river and lake) and aquifer systems via the interfaces (unsaturated zone, stream-aquifer interface and aquitard). These developments have resulted in the coupling between ORCHIDEE (developed by IPSL) including water and energy transfers from the atmosphere to the unsaturated zone and CaWaQS (developed by Mines Paris-PSL), which simulates the hydrodynamics of rivers and aquifer systems. An original transport numerical tool based on the resolution of the diffusion/advection transport equation has been developed to simulate heat transfer in river networks and aquifer systems in pseudo-3D. An analytical solution is used to simulate heat transport through aquitards and the stream-aquifer interface. The tool allows us to establish a first water and heat balance of the Seine hydrosystem, which estimates the temperature evolution in each compartment of the hydrosystem and evaluates the heat balance of the rivers. The rivers' heat balance is mainly based on air exchanges and solar radiation (109.3 W m$^{−2}$), and then water-river exchange flows (48.1 W m$^{−2}$) and surface runoff (22.7 W m$^{−2}$).; Véritable bien commun, l’eau est indispensable à de nombreux usages liés aux activités développées par l’homme : les besoins domestiques (dont l’alimentation en eau potable), les usages agricoles, les usages industriels, les usages énergétiques et les usages liés aux loisirs. L’urbanisation, qui concentre une forte densité de population, ainsi que les activités économiques du bassin de la Seine engendrent une augmentation des besoins en eau et en énergie. De plus, le changement climatique a une incidence sur la gestion durable des ressources à long terme. La compréhension précise des flux d’eau et d’énergie à l’échelle du bassin devient ainsi une nécessité stratégique afin d’adapter la gestion des ressources.Dans ce cadre, les équipes du PIREN-Seine ont développé un outil de modélisation intégrée visant à simuler des échanges d’eau et de chaleur entre l’atmosphère et la surface (sol, rivière et lac) et les systèmes aquifères en passant par les interfaces (zone non saturée, interface nappe-rivière et aquitard). Ces développements ont permis le couplage entre ORCHIDEE (développé par l’IPSL) incluant les transferts d’eau et d’énergie depuis l’atmosphère jusqu’à la zone non saturée et CaWaQS (développé par Mines Paris - PSL) simulant l’hydrodynamisme des rivières et du système aquifère.Un outil de transport originale basée sur la résolution de l’équation de transport de diffusion/advection a été développée afin de simuler le transfert de chaleur dans les réseaux hydrographiques et les systèmes aquifères en pseudo-3D. Une solution analytique est utilisée pour simuler le transport de chaleur à travers les aquitards et l’interface nappe-rivière. L’outil permet d’établir un premier bilan d’eau et de chaleur de l’hydrosystème de la Seine. Les résultats permettent d’estimer l’évolution de la température dans chaque compartiment de l’hydrosystème et d’évaluer le bilanthermique des rivières qui repose principalement sur les échanges avec l’atmosphère (109,3 W m$^{−2}$ ), puis les flux d’échange nappe-rivière (48,1 W m$^{−2}$ ) et le ruissellement de surface (22,7 W m$^{−2}$ ).
