We report the discovery of eight new recurrent changing-look (CL) active galactic nuclei (AGNs), including seven re-brightening turn-off AGNs and one fading turn-on AGN. These systems are valuable for placing constraints on the duration of dim and bright states, which may be linked to the AGN duty cycle or disk instability. Long-term optical light curve analysis reveals that many objects in our sample exhibit a prolonged plateau during the dim states lasting 4 to 7 years, with gradual turn-on/off process. We observe no significant difference between the turn-on and turn-off timescales, and this timescale is broadly consistent with the heating/cooling front propagation timescale. The comparison between optical and infrared variations supports that these transitions are driven by changes in accretion disk emission rather than dust obscuration. Our discovery significantly increases the previously identified recurrent CL AGN sample from eleven objects to nineteen, demonstrating that some AGNs can enter dormancy and reawaken on timescales of a few years, which provides useful information for understanding AGN episodic accretion., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures; submitted

Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) can grow through both accretion and mergers. It is still unclear how SMBHs evolve under these two channels from high redshifts to the SMBH population we observe in the local universe. Observations can directly constrain the accretion channel but cannot effectively constrain mergers yet, while cosmological simulations provide galaxy merger information but can hardly return accretion properties consistent with observations. In this work, we combine the observed accretion channel and the simulated merger channel, taking advantage of both observations and cosmological simulations, to depict a realistic evolution pattern of the SMBH population. With this methodology, we can derive the scaling relation between the black-hole mass ($M_\mathrm{BH}$) and host-galaxy stellar mass ($M_\star$) and the local black-hole mass function (BHMF). Our scaling relation is lower than those based on dynamically measured $M_\mathrm{BH}$, supporting the claim that dynamically measured SMBH samples may be biased. We show that the scaling relation has little redshift evolution. The BHMF steadily increases from $z=4$ to $z=1$ and remains largely unchanged from $z=1$ to $z=0$. The overall SMBH growth is generally dominated by the accretion channel, with possible exceptions at high mass ($M_\mathrm{BH}\gtrsim10^{8}~M_\odot$ or $M_\star\gtrsim10^{11}~M_\odot$) and low redshift ($z\lesssim1$). We also predict that around 25% of the total SMBH mass budget in the local universe may be locked within long-lived, wandering SMBHs, and the wandering mass fraction and wandering SMBH counts increase with $M_\star$., Comment: 29 pages, 22 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

The supermassive black holes ($M_{\rm BH} \sim 10^{6}$$-$$10^{10}~M_\odot$) that power luminous active galactic nuclei (AGNs), i.e., quasars, generally show a correlation between thermal disk emission in the ultraviolet (UV) and coronal emission in hard X-rays. In contrast, some "massive" black holes (mBHs; $M_{\rm BH} \sim 10^{5}$$-$$10^{6}~M_\odot$) in low-mass galaxies present curious X-ray properties with coronal radiative output up to 100$\times$ weaker than expected. To examine this issue, we present a pilot study incorporating Very Large Array radio observations of a sample of 18 high-accretion-rate (Eddington ratios $L_{\rm bol}/L_{\rm Edd} > 0.1$), mBH-powered AGNs ($M_{\rm BH} \sim 10^{6}~M_\odot$) with Chandra X-ray coverage. Empirical correlations previously revealed in samples of radio-quiet, high-Eddington AGNs indicate that the radio$-$X-ray luminosity ratio, $L_{\rm R}/L_{\rm X}$, is approximately constant. Through multiwavelength analysis, we instead find that the X-ray-weaker mBHs in our sample tend toward larger values of $L_{\rm R}/L_{\rm X}$ even though they remain radio-quiet per their optical$-$UV properties. This trend results in a tentative but highly intriguing correlation between $L_{\rm R}/L_{\rm X}$ and X-ray weakness, which we argue is consistent with a scenario in which X-rays may be preferentially obscured from our line of sight by a "slim" accretion disk. We compare this observation to weak emission-line quasars (AGNs with exceptionally weak broad-line emission and a significant X-ray-weak fraction) and conclude by suggesting that our results may offer a new observational signature for finding high-accretion-rate AGNs., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 26 pages, 8 figures, 6 tables

Changing-look (CL) Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), characterized by appearance/disappearance of broad emission lines in the span of a few years, present a challenge for the AGN unified model, whereby the Type 1 vs. Type 2 dichotomy results from orientation effects alone. We present a systematic study of a large sample of spectroscopically classified AGNs, using optical variability data from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) as well as follow-up spectroscopy data. We demonstrate that Type 1 vs. 2 AGN can be neatly separated on the basis of the variability metric $\sigma_{\rm QSO}$, which quantifies the resemblance of a light curve to a damp random walk model. For a small sub-sample, however, the ZTF light curves are inconsistent with their previous classification, suggesting the occurrence of a CL event. Specifically, we identify 35 (12) turn-on (turn-off) CL AGN candidates at $z < 0.35$. Based on follow-up spectroscopy, we confirm 17 (4) turn-on (turn-off) CL AGNs out of 21 (5) candidates, presenting a high success rate of our method. Our results suggest that the occurrence rate of CL AGNs is $\sim$0.3% over timescales of 5 to 20 years, and confirm that the CL transition typically occurs at the Eddington ratio of $\leq 0.01$., Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures. Motivated by the recent surge in interest concerning white dwarf (WD) planets, this work presents the first numerical exploration of WD-driven atmospheric escape, whereby the high-energy radiation from a hot/young WD can trigger the outflow of the hydrogen-helium envelope for close-in planets. As a pilot investigation, we focus on two specific cases: a gas giant and a sub-Neptune-sized planet, both orbiting a rapidly cooling WD with mass $M_\ast$ = 0.6 \msun\ and separation $a$ = 0.02 AU. In both cases, the ensuing mass outflow rates exceed $10^{14}$ g sec$^{-1}$ for WD temperatures greater than $T_{\rm WD} \simeq$ 50,000 K. At $T_{\rm WD} \simeq$ 18,000 K [/22,000 K], the sub-Neptune [/gas giant] mass outflow rate approaches $10^{12}$ g sec$^{-1}$, i.e., comparable to the strongest outflows expected from close-in planets around late main-sequence stars. Whereas the gas giant remains virtually unaffected from an evolutionary standpoint, atmospheric escape may have sizable effects for the sub-Neptune, depending on its dynamical history, e.g., assuming that the hydrogen-helium envelope makes up 1 [/4] per cent of the planet mass, the entire envelope would be evaporated away so long as the planet reaches 0.02 AU within the first 230 [/130] Myr of the WD formation. We discuss how these results can be generalized to eccentric orbits with effective semi-major axis $a'=a/(1-e^2)^{1/4}$, which receive the same orbit-averaged irradiation. Extended to a much broader parameter space, this approach can be exploited to model the expected demographics of WD planets as a function of their initial mass, composition and migration history, as well as their potential for habitability., Comment: ApJ Letters, in press

Black hole X-ray binaries (BH XRBs) are ideal targets to study the connection between accretion inflow and jet outflow. Here we present quasi-simultaneous, multi-wavelength observations of the Galactic black hole system MAXI J1820+070, throughout its 2018-2019 outburst. Our data set includes coverage from the radio through X-ray bands from 17 different instruments/telescopes, and encompasses 19 epochs over a 7 month time period, resulting in one of the most well-sampled multi-wavelength data sets of a BH XRB outburst to date. With our data, we compile and model the broad-band spectra of this source using a phenomenological model that includes emission from the jet, companion star, and accretion flow. This modeling allows us to track the evolution of the spectral break in the jet spectrum, a key observable that samples the jet launching region. We find that the spectral break location changes over at least $\approx3$ orders of magnitude in electromagnetic frequency over this period. Using these spectral break measurements, we link the full cycle of jet behavior, including the rising, quenching, and re-ignition, to the changing accretion flow properties as the source evolves through its different accretion states. Our analyses show a consistent jet behavior with other sources in similar phases of their outbursts, reinforcing that the jet quenching and recovery may be a global feature of BH XRB systems in outburst. One of the key research themes identified by the Astro2020 decadal survey is Worlds and Suns in Context. The Advanced X-ray Imaging Satellite (AXIS) is a proposed NASA APEX mission that will become the prime high-energy instrument for studying star-planet connections from birth to death. This work explores the major advances in this broad domain of research that will be enabled by the AXIS mission, through X-ray observations of stars in clusters spanning a broad range of ages, flaring M-dwarf stars known to host exoplanets, and young stars exhibiting accretion interactions with their protoplanetary disks. Absorption of stellar X-ray and Extreme Ultraviolet radiation in the upper atmosphere of close-in exoplanets can give rise to hydrodynamic outflows, which may lead to the gradual shedding of their primordial, light element envelopes. Excess absorption by neutral helium atoms in the metastable state has recently emerged as a viable diagnostic of atmospheric escape. Here we present a public module to the 1D photo-ionization hydrodynamic code ATES, designed to calculate the HeI triplet transmission probability for a broad range of planetary parameters. By relaxing the isothermal outflow assumption, the code enables a self-consistent assessment of the HeI triplet absorption depth along with the atmospheric mass loss rate and the outflow temperature profile, which strongly affects the recombination rate of HeII into HeI triplet. We investigate how the transit signal can be expected to depend upon known system parameters, including host spectral type, orbital distance, as well as planet gravity. At variance with previous studies, which identified K-type stars as favorable hosts, we conclude that late M-dwarfs with Neptune-sized planets orbiting at ~0.05-0.1 AU can be expected to yield the strongest transit signal well in excess of 30% for near-cosmological He/H abundances. More generally, we show that the physics which regulates the population and depletion of the metastable state, combined with geometrical effects, can yield somewhat counter-intuitive results, such as a non-monotonic dependence of the transit depth on orbital distance. These are compounded by a strong degeneracy between the stellar EUV flux intensity and the atmospheric He/H abundance, both of which are highly uncertain. Compared against spectroscopy data our modelling suggests that either a large fraction of the targets have helium depleted envelopes, or, that the input stellar EUV spectra are systematically overestimated., Comment: A&A accepted. We conduct one of the largest systematic investigations of bright X-ray binaries (XRBs) in both young star clusters and ancient globular clusters (GCs) using a sample of six nearby, star-forming galaxies. Combining complete CXO X-ray source catalogs with optical PHANGS-HST cluster catalogs, we identify a population of 33 XRBs within or near their parent clusters. We find that GCs that host XRBs in spiral galaxies appear to be brighter, more compact, denser, and more massive than the general GC population. However, these XRB hosts do not appear preferentially redder or more metal-rich, pointing to a possible absence of the metallicity-boosted formation of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) that is observed in the GCs of older galaxies. We also find that a smaller fraction of LMXBs is found in spiral GC systems when compared with those in early-type galaxies: between 8 and 50%, or an average of 20% across galaxies in our sample. Although there is a non-negligible probability of a chance superposition between an XRB and an unrelated young cluster, we find that among clusters younger than 10 Myr, which most likely host high-mass XRBs, the fraction of clusters associated with an XRB increases at higher cluster masses and densities. The X-ray luminosity of XRBs appears to increase with the mass of the cluster host for clusters younger than ~400 Myr, while the inverse relation is found for XRBs in GCs., Comment: 17 pages of text, 6 tables, 6 figures

The broad line region (BLR) size-luminosity relation has paramount importance for estimating the mass of black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Traditionally, the size of the H$\beta$ BLR is often estimated from the optical continuum luminosity at 5100\angstrom{} , while the size of the H$\alpha$ BLR and its correlation with the luminosity is much less constrained. As a part of the Seoul National University AGN Monitoring Project (SAMP) which provides six-year photometric and spectroscopic monitoring data, we present our measurements of the H$\alpha$ lags of 6 high-luminosity AGNs. Combined with the measurements for 42 AGNs from the literature, we derive the size-luminosity relations of H$\alpha$ BLR against broad H$\alpha$ and 5100\angstrom{} continuum luminosities. We find the slope of the relations to be $0.61\pm0.04$ and $0.59\pm0.04$, respectively, which are consistent with the \hb{} size-luminosity relation. Moreover, we find a linear relation between the 5100\angstrom{} continuum luminosity and the broad H$\alpha$ luminosity across 7 orders of magnitude. Using these results, we propose a new virial mass estimator based on the H$\alpha$ broad emission line, finding that the previous mass estimates based on the scaling relations in the literature are overestimated by up to 0.7 dex at masses lower than $10^7$~M$_{\odot}$., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ (Jun. 25th, 2023). 21 pages, 12 figures

Owing to their quiet evolutionary histories, nearby dwarf galaxies (stellar masses $M_\star \lesssim 3 \times 10^9 M_\odot$) have the potential to teach us about the mechanism(s) that 'seeded' the growth of supermassive black holes, and also how the first stellar mass black holes formed and interacted with their environments. Here, we present high spatial-resolution observations of three dwarf galaxies in the X-ray (Chandra), the optical/near-infrared (Hubble Space Telescope), and the radio (Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array). These three galaxies were previously identified as hosting candidate active galactic nuclei on the basis of lower resolution X-ray imaging. With our new observations, we find that X-ray sources in two galaxies (SDSS J121326.01+543631.6 and SDSS J122111.29+173819.1) are off nuclear and lack corresponding radio emission, implying they are likely luminous X-ray binaries. The third galaxy (Mrk 1434) contains two X-ray sources (each with $L_{\rm X} \approx 10^{40}$ erg s$^{-1}$) separated by 2".8, has a low metallicity (12 + log (O/H) = 7.8), and emits nebular \ion{He}{II} $\lambda$4686 line emission. The northern source has spatially coincident point-like radio emission at 9.0 GHz and extended radio emission at 5.5 GHz. We discuss X-ray binary interpretations (where an ultraluminous X-ray source blows a 'radio bubble') and active galactic nucleus interpretations (where a $\approx 4\times10^5 M_\odot$ black hole launches a jet). Weakly accreting black hole X-ray binaries launch compact radio jets that persist even in the quiescent spectral state, at X-ray luminosities <1e-5 of the Eddington luminosity. However, radio continuum emission has been detected from only a few of these quiescent systems, and little is known about their radio variability. Jet variability can lead to misclassification of accreting compact objects in quiescence, and affects the detectability of black hole X-ray binaries in next-generation radio surveys. Here we present the results of a radio monitoring campaign of A0620-00, one of the best-studied and least-luminous known quiescent black hole X-ray binaries. We observed A0620-00 at 9.8 GHz using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array on 31 epochs from 2017 to 2020, detecting the source ~75% of the time. We see significant variability over all timescales sampled, and the observed flux densities follow a lognormal distribution with a mean of 12.5 uJy and standard deviation of 0.22 dex. In no epoch was A0620-00 as bright as in 2005 (51 +/- 7 uJy), implying either that this original detection was obtained during an unusually bright flare, or that the system is fading in the radio over time. We present tentative evidence that the quiescent radio emission from A0620-00 is less variable than that of V404 Cyg, the only other black hole binary with comparable data. Given that V404 Cyg has a jet radio luminosity ~20 times higher than A0620-00, this comparison could suggest that less luminous jets are less variable in quiescence., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We characterize the optical counterparts to the compact X-ray source population within the nearby spiral galaxy M81 using multi-band Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging data. By comparing the optical luminosities and colors measured for candidate donor stars and host clusters to stellar and cluster evolutionary models, respectively, we estimate the likely masses and upper age limits of the field and cluster X-ray binaries. We identify 15 low-mass X-ray binaries (i.e. donor star mass $\leq$ 3 solar masses) within ancient globular clusters, as well as 42 candidate high-mass X-ray binaries (i.e. donor star mass $\geq$ 8 solar masses). To estimate the likelihood of misclassifications, we inject 4,000 artificial sources into the HST mosaic image and conclude that our classifications of globular clusters and high-mass X-ray binaries are reliable at the >90% level. We find that globular clusters that host X-ray binaries are on average more massive and more compact than globular clusters that do not. However, there is no apparent correlation between the X-ray brightness of the clusters and their masses or densities, nor are X-ray binary hosts more X-ray luminous than the general field population of low-mass X-ray binaries. We present a detailed study of the evolution of the Galactic black hole transient GRS 1716-249 during its 2016-2017 outburst at optical (Las Cumbres Observatory), mid-infrared (Very Large Telescope), near-infrared (Rapid Eye Mount telescope), and ultraviolet (the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope) wavelengths, along with archival radio and X-ray data. We show that the optical/near-infrared and UV emission of the source mainly originates from a multi-temperature accretion disk, while the mid-infrared and radio emission are dominated by synchrotron emission from a compact jet. The optical/UV flux density is correlated with the X-ray emission when the source is in the hard state, consistent with an X-ray irradiated accretion disk with an additional contribution from the viscous disk during the outburst fade. We also report the long-term optical light curve of the source and find that the quiescent i-band magnitude is 21.39$\pm$0.15 mag. Furthermore, we discuss how previous estimates of the system parameters of the source are based on various incorrect assumptions, and so are likely to be inaccurate. By comparing our GRS 1716-249 dataset to those of other outbursting black hole X-ray binaries, we find that while GRS 1716-249 shows similar X-ray behaviour, it is noticeably optically fainter, if the literature distance of 2.4 kpc is adopted. Using several lines of reasoning, we argue that the source distance is further than previously assumed in the literature, likely within 4-17 kpc, with a most likely range of $\sim$4-8 kpc., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We present ultraviolet spectroscopy covering the Ly$\alpha$ + N V complex of six candidate low-redshift ($0.9 < z < 1.5$) weak emission-line quasars (WLQs) based on observations with the Hubble Space Telescope. The original systematic searches for these puzzling Type 1 quasars with intrinsically weak broad emission lines revealed an $N \approx 100$ WLQ population from optical spectroscopy of high-redshift ($z > 3$) quasars, defined by a Ly$\alpha$ + N V rest-frame equivalent width (EW) threshold $< 15.4$ \r{A}. Identification of lower-redshift ($z < 3$) WLQ candidates, however, has relied primarily on optical spectroscopy of weak broad emission lines at longer rest-frame wavelengths. With these new observations expanding existing optical coverage into the ultraviolet, we explore unifying the low- and high-$z$ WLQ populations via EW[Ly$\alpha$+NV]. Two objects in the sample unify with high-$z$ WLQs, three others appear consistent with the intermediate portion of the population connecting WLQs and normal quasars, and the final object is consistent with typical quasars. The expanded wavelength coverage improves the number of available line diagnostics for our individual targets, allowing a better understanding of the shapes of their ionizing continua. The ratio of EW[Ly$\alpha$+NV] to EW[MgII] in our sample is generally small but varied, favoring a soft ionizing continuum scenario for WLQs, and we find a lack of correlation between EW[Ly$\alpha$+NV] and the X-ray properties of our targets, consistent with a "slim-disk" shielding gas model. We also find indications that weak absorption may be a more significant contaminant in low-$z$ WLQ populations than previously thought., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables. We analyze Chandra X-ray Observatory imaging of 108 galaxies hosting nuclear star clusters (NSCs) to search for signatures of massive black holes (BHs). NSCs are extremely dense stellar environments with conditions that can theoretically facilitate massive BH formation. Recent work by Stone et al. (2017) finds that sufficiently dense NSCs should be unstable to the runaway growth of a stellar mass BH into a massive BH via tidal captures. Furthermore, there is a velocity dispersion threshold ($40\;\rm{km\;s^{-1}}$) above which NSCs should inevitably form a massive BH. To provide an observational test of these theories, we measure X-ray emission from NSCs and compare to the measured velocity dispersion and tidal capture runaway timescale. We find that NSCs above the $40\;\rm{km\;s^{-1}}$ threshold are X-ray detected at roughly twice the rate of those below (after accounting for contamination from X-ray binaries). These results are consistent with a scenario in which dense, high-velocity NSCs can form massive BHs, providing a formation pathway that does not rely on conditions found only at high redshift., Comment: Resubmitted to AAS Journals on March 1, 2022

We present a sample of intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) candidates based on the detection of a broad H$\alpha$ emission line and variability, which are selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7. By performing spectral decomposition of emission lines as well as visual inspection, we initially identified 131 targets with a broad H$\alpha$ line among a large sample of emission-line galaxies. We further selected 25 IMBH candidates, whose estimated black hole mass (M$_{\rm BH}$) is less than $10^6 \rm M_{\odot}$. To constrain the nature of these candidates, we analyzed X-ray properties and performed an intra-night variability monitoring with optical telescopes. Based on the optical variability analysis, we report a sample of 11 targets with detected intra-night variability as the best IMBH candidates, which are suitable for follow-up observations for accurate M$_{\rm BH}$ determination such as reverberation mapping campaigns., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ (Dec. 4th, 2021). 24 pages, 7 figures

Making use of the publicly available 1D photoionization hydrodynamics code ATES we set out to investigate the combined effects of planetary gravitational potential energy ($\phi_p\equiv GM_p/R_p$) and stellar X-ray and Extreme Ultraviolet (XUV) irradiation ($F_{\rm XUV}$) on the evaporation efficiency ($\eta$) of moderately-to-highly irradiated gaseous planets, from sub-Neptunes through hot Jupiters. We show that the (known) existence of a threshold potential above which energy-limited escape (i.e., $\eta\simeq 1$) is unattainable can be inferred analytically. For $\log \phi_p\gtrsim \log \phi_p^{\rm thr}\approx [12.9-13.2]$ (in cgs units), most of the energy absorption occurs where the average kinetic energy acquired by the ions through photo-electron collisions is insufficient for escape. This causes the evaporation efficiency to plummet with increasing $\phi_p$,. Whether or not planets with $\phi_p\lesssim \phi_p^{\rm thr}$ exhibit energy-limited outflows is regulated primarily by the stellar irradiation level. Specifically, for low-gravity planets, above $F_{\rm XUV}\simeq 10^{4-5}$ erg cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ Ly$\alpha$ losses overtake adiabatic and advective cooling and the evaporation efficiency of low-gravity planets drops below the energy-limited approximation, albeit remaining largely independent of $\phi_p$Further, we show that whereas $\eta$ increases as $F_{\rm XUV}$ increases for planets above $\phi^{\rm thr}_p$, the opposite is true for low-gravity planets. This behavior can be understood by examining the relative fractional contributions of advective and radiative losses as a function of atmospheric temperature. We present the results of a high-cadence spectroscopic and imaging monitoring campaign of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) of NGC 4395. High signal-to-noise-ratio spectra were obtained at the Gemini-N 8 m telescope using the GMOS integral field spectrograph (IFS) on 2019 March 7, and at the Keck-I 10 m telescope using the Low-Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (LRIS) with slitmasks on 2019 March 3 and April 2. Photometric data were obtained with a number of 1 m-class telescopes during the same nights. The narrow-line region (NLR) is spatially resolved; therefore, its variable contributions to the slit spectra make the standard procedure of relative flux calibration impractical. We demonstrate that spatially-resolved data from the IFS can be effectively used to correct the slit-mask spectral light curves. While we obtained no reliable lag owing to the lack of strong variability pattern in the light curves, we constrain the broad line time lag to be less than 3 hr, consistent with the photometric lag of $\sim80$ min reported by Woo et al. (2019). By exploiting the high-quality spectra, we measure the second moment of the broad component of the H$\alpha$ emission line to be $586\pm19$ km s$^{-1}$, superseding the lower value reported by Woo et al. (2019). Intense X-ray and ultraviolet stellar irradiation can heat and inflate the atmospheres of closely orbiting exoplanets, driving mass outflows that may be significant enough to evaporate a sizable fraction of the planet atmosphere over the system lifetime. The recent surge in the number of known exoplanets, together with the imminent deployment of new ground and space-based facilities for exoplanet discovery and characterization, requires a prompt and efficient assessment of the most promising targets for intensive spectroscopic follow-ups. To this purpose, we developed ATES (ATmospheric EScape); a new hydrodynamics code that is specifically designed to compute the temperature, density, velocity and ionization fraction profiles of highly irradiated planetary atmospheres, along with the current, steady-state mass loss rate. ATES solves the one-dimensional Euler, mass and energy conservation equations in radial coordinates through a finite-volume scheme. The hydrodynamics module is paired with a photoionization equilibrium solver that includes cooling via bremsstrahlung, recombination and collisional excitation/ionization for the case of a primordial atmosphere entirely composed of atomic hydrogen and helium, whilst also accounting for advection of the different ion species. Compared against the results of 14 moderately-to-highly irradiated planets simulated with The PLUTO-CLOUDY Interface (TPCI), ATES yields remarkably good agreement at a significantly smaller fraction of the computational time. A convergence study shows that ATES recovers stable, steady-state hydrodynamic solutions for systems with $\log(-\phi_p) \lesssim 12.9 + 0.17\log F_{\rm XUV}$. Incidentally, atmospheres of systems above this threshold are generally thought to be undergoing Jeans escape. We present a definitive assessment of the role of Inverse Compton scattering of Cosmic Microwave Background photons (IC/CMB) in the context of radio galaxies. Owing to the steep increase of the CMB radiation energy density, IC/CMB is supposed to become progressively more important with respect to radio synchrotron cooling as the redshift increases. For typical energies at play, this process will up-scatter the CMB photons into the X-ray band, and is thus expected to yield a redshift-dependent, concurrent X-ray brightening and radio dimming of the jet-powered structures. Here we show how a conclusive proof of this effect hinges on high-resolution imaging data in which the extended lobes can be distinguished from the compact hot spots where synchrotron-self-Compton dominates the X-ray emission regardless of redshift. We analyze Chandra and Very Large Array data of 11 radio galaxies between 1.33 radio galaxies below <1 mJy, IC/CMB alone can not be responsible for a deficit in high-z, radio-loud AGN if--as we argue--such AGN typically have bright, compact hot spots., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, 5 tables. Building on recent work by Chandar et al. (2020), we construct X-ray luminosity functions (XLFs) for different classes of X-ray binary (XRB) donors in the nearby star-forming galaxy M83 through a novel methodology: rather than classifying low- vs. high-mass XRBs based on the scaling of the number of X-ray sources with stellar mass and star formation rate, respectively, we utilize multi-band Hubble Space Telescope imaging data to classify each Chandra-detected compact X-ray source as a low-mass (i.e. donor mass <~ 3 solar masses), high-mass (donor mass >~ 8 solar masses) or intermediate-mass XRB based on either the location of its candidate counterpart on optical color-magnitude diagrams or the age of its host star cluster. In addition to the the standard (single and/or truncated) power-law functional shape, we approximate the resulting XLFs with a Schechter function. We identify a marginally significant (at the 1-to-2 sigma level) exponential downturn for the high-mass XRB XLF, at logLx ~ 38.48^{+0.52}_{-0.33} (in log CGS units). In contrast, the low- and intermediate-mass XRB XLFs, as well as the total XLF of M83, are formally consistent with sampling statistics from a single power-law. Our method suggests a non-negligible contribution from low- and possibly intermediate-mass XRBs to the total XRB XLF of M83, i.e. between 20 and 50%, in broad agreement with X-ray based XLFs. HIRES will be the high-resolution spectrograph of the European Extremely Large Telescope at optical and near-infrared wavelengths. It consists of three fibre-fed spectrographs providing a wavelength coverage of 0.4-1.8 mic (goal 0.35-1.8 mic) at a spectral resolution of ~100,000. The fibre-feeding allows HIRES to have several, interchangeable observing modes including a SCAO module and a small diffraction-limited IFU in the NIR. Therefore, it will be able to operate both in seeing and diffraction-limited modes. ELT-HIRES has a wide range of science cases spanning nearly all areas of research in astrophysics and even fundamental physics. Some of the top science cases will be the detection of bio signatures from exoplanet atmospheres, finding the fingerprints of the first generation of stars (PopIII), tests on the stability of Nature's fundamental couplings, and the direct detection of the cosmic acceleration. We report on deep Chandra X-ray Telescope imaging observations of 4C 63.20, one of the few known radio galaxies at z>3.5. The X-ray counterpart is resolved into a core plus two off-nuclear sources that (combined) account for close to 30% of the total X-ray flux. Their morphology and orientation are consistent with a diffuse, lobe-like nature, albeit compact hotspots cannot be ruled out. The broadband spectral energy distribution of 4C 63.20 can be reproduced with a jet model where the majority of the radio flux can be ascribed to synchrotron emission from the hotspots, whereas the (non-nuclear) X-ray emission is produced via Inverse Compton (IC) off of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) photons within the extended lobes. This scenario is broadly consistent with the expectation from highly magnetized lobes in a hotter CMB, and supports the view that IC/CMB may quench less extreme radio lobes at high redshifts., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, accepted to MNRAS

Many ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) have been discovered in the Coma cluster, and there is evidence that some, notably Dragonfly 44, have Milky Way-like dynamical masses despite dwarf-like stellar masses. We used X-ray, UV, and optical data to investigate the star formation and nuclear activity in the Coma UDGs, and we obtained deep UV and X-ray data (Swift and XMM-Newton) for Dragonfly 44 to search for low-level star formation, hot circumgalactic gas, and the integrated emission from X-ray binaries. Among the Coma UDGs, we find UV luminosities consistent with quiescence but NUV$-r$ colors indicating star formation in the past Gyr. This indicates that the UDGs were recently quenched. The $r$-band luminosity declines with projected distance from the Coma core. The Dragonfly 44 UV luminosity is also consistent with quiescence, with SFR$<6\times 10^{-4} M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, and no X-rays are detected down to a sensitivity of $10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$. This rules out a hot corona with a $M > 10^8 M_{\odot}$ within the virial radius, which would normally be expected for a dynamically massive galaxy. The absence of bright, low mass X-ray binaries is consistent with the expectation from the galaxy total stellar mass, but it is unlikely if most low-mass X-ray binaries form in globular clusters, as Dragonfly 44 has a very large population. Based on the UV and X-ray analysis, the Coma UDGs are consistent with quenched dwarf galaxies, although we cannot rule out a dynamically massive population., Comment: 12 pages, 5 tables, 7 figures. About half of nearby galaxies have a central surface brightness >1 magnitude below that of the sky. The overall properties of these low-surface-brightness galaxies (LSBGs) remain understudied, and in particular we know very little about their massive black hole population. This gap must be closed to determine the frequency of massive black holes at z=0 as well as to understand their role in regulating galaxy evolution. Here we investigate the incidence and intensity of nuclear, accretion-powered X-ray emission in a sample of 32 nearby LSBGs with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. A nuclear X-ray source is detected in 4 galaxies (12.5%). Based on an X-ray binary contamination assessment technique developed for normal galaxies, we conclude that the detected X-ray nuclei indicate low-level accretion from massive black holes. The active fraction is consistent with that expected from the stellar mass distribution of the LSBGs, but not their total baryonic mass, when using a scaling relation from an unbiased X-ray survey of normal galaxies. This suggests that their black holes co-evolved with their stellar population. In addition, the apparent agreement nearly doubles the number of galaxies available within ~100 Mpc for which a measurement of nuclear activity can efficiently constrain the frequency of black holes as a function of stellar mass. We conclude by discussing the feasibility of measuring this occupation fraction to a few percent precision below 1e10 solar masses with high-resolution, wide-field X-ray missions currently under consideration., Comment: 17 pages, accepted by ApJ

Exoplanets residing close to their stars can experience evolution of both their physical structures and their orbits due to the influence of their host stars. In this work, we present a coupled analysis of dynamical tidal dissipation and atmospheric mass loss for exoplanets in XUV irradiated environments. As our primary application, we use this model to study the TRAPPIST-1 system, and place constraints on the interior structure and orbital evolution of the planets. We start by reporting on a UV continuum flux measurement (centered around $\sim1900$ Angstroms) for the star TRAPPIST-1, based on 300 ks of Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory data, and which enables an estimate of the XUV-driven thermal escape arising from XUV photo-dissociation for each planet. We find that the X-ray flaring luminosity, measured from our X-ray detections, of TRAPPIST-1 is 5.6 $\times$10$^{-4} L_{*}$, while the full flux including non-flaring periods is 6.1 $\times$10$^{-5} L_{*}$, when $L_{*}$ is TRAPPIST-1's bolometric luminosity. We then construct a model that includes both atmospheric mass-loss and tidal evolution, and requires the planets to attain their present-day orbital elements during this coupled evolution. We use this model to constrain the ratio $Q'=3Q/2k_{2}$ for each planet. Finally, we use additional numerical models implemented with the Virtual Planet Simulator \texttt{VPLanet} to study ocean retention for these planets using our derived system parameters., Comment: accepted to AJ. The black hole MAXI J1820+070 was discovered during its 2018 outburst and was extensively monitored across the electromagnetic spectrum. Following the detection of relativistic radio jets, we obtained four Chandra X-ray observations taken between 2018 November and 2019 May, along with radio observations conducted with the VLA and MeerKAT arrays. We report the discovery of X-ray sources associated with the radio jets moving at relativistic velocities with a possible deceleration at late times. The broadband spectra of the jets are consistent with synchrotron radiation from particles accelerated up to very high energies (>10 TeV) by shocks produced by the jets interacting with the interstellar medium. The minimal internal energy estimated from the X-ray observations for the jets is $\sim 10^{41}$ erg, significantly larger than the energy calculated from the radio flare alone, suggesting most of the energy is possibly not radiated at small scales but released through late-time interactions., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

We present the variability study of the lowest-luminosity Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4395 based on the photometric monitoring campaigns in 2017 and 2018. Using 22 ground-based and space telescopes, we monitored NGC 4395 with a $\sim$5 minute cadence during a period of 10 days and obtained light curves in the UV, V, J, H, and K/Ks bands as well as the H$\alpha$ narrow-band. The RMS variability is $\sim$0.13 mag on \emph{Swift}-UVM2 and V filter light curves, decreasing down to $\sim$0.01 mag on K filter. After correcting for continuum contribution to the H$\alpha$ narrow-band, we measured the time lag of the H$\alpha$ emission line with respect to the V-band continuum as ${55}^{+27}_{-31}$ to ${122}^{+33}_{-67}$ min. in 2017 and ${49}^{+15}_{-14}$ to ${83}^{+13}_{-14}$ min. in 2018, depending on the assumption on the continuum variability amplitude in the H$\alpha$ narrow-band. We obtained no reliable measurements for the continuum-to-continuum lag between UV and V bands and among near-IR bands, due to the large flux uncertainty of UV observations and the limited time baseline. We determined the AGN monochromatic luminosity at 5100\AA\ $\lambda L_\lambda = \left(5.75\pm0.40\right)\times 10^{39}\,\mathrm{erg\,s^{-1}}$, after subtracting the contribution of the nuclear star cluster. While the optical luminosity of NGC 4395 is two orders of magnitude lower than that of other reverberation-mapped AGNs, NGC 4395 follows the size-luminosity relation, albeit with an offset of 0.48 dex ($\geq$2.5$\sigma$) from the previous best-fit relation of Bentz et al. Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) show a correlation between the size of the broad line region (BLR) and the monochromatic continuum luminosity at 5100 \AA, allowing black hole mass estimation based on single-epoch spectra. However, the validity of the correlation is yet to be clearly tested for high-luminosity AGNs. We present the first reverberation-mapping results of the Seoul National University AGN monitoring program (SAMP), which is designed to focus on luminous AGNs for probing the high end of the size-luminosity relation. We report time lag measurements of two AGNs, namely, 2MASS J10261389+5237510 and SDSS J161911.24+501109.2, using the light curves obtained over a $\sim$1000 day period with an average cadence of $\sim$10 and $\sim$20 days, respectively for photometry and spectroscopy monitoring. Based on a cross-correlation analysis and H$\beta$ line width measurements, we determine the H$\beta$ lag as $41.8^{+4.9}_{-6.0}$ and $52.6^{+17.6}_{-14.7}$ days in the observed-frame, and black hole mass as $3.65^{+0.49}_{-0.57} \times 10^7 M_{\odot}$ and $23.02^{+7.81}_{-6.56} \times 10^7 M_{\odot}$, respectively for 2MASS J1026 and SDSS J1619., Comment: 14 pages; accepted by ApJ

The local black hole mass function (BHMF) is of great interest to a variety of astrophysical problems, ranging from black hole binary merger rates to an indirect census of the dominant seeding mechanism of supermassive black holes. In this Letter, we combine the latest galaxy stellar mass function from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey with X-ray-based constraints to the local black hole occupation fraction to probe the BHMF below $10^6$ $M_{\odot}$. Notwithstanding the large uncertainties inherent to the choice of a reliable observational proxy for black hole mass, the resulting range of BHMFs yields a combined normalization uncertainty of $\lesssim$1 dex over the $[10^5-10^6]$ $M_{\odot}$ range, where upcoming, space-based gravitational wave detectors are designed to be most sensitive., Comment: Accepted by ApJ as a Letter

We report on ALMA continuum observations of the black hole X-ray binary A0620-00, at an X-ray luminosity nine orders of magnitude sub-Eddington. The system was significantly detected at 98 GHz (at $44 \pm 7~\mu{\rm Jy}$) and only marginally at 233 GHz ($20 \pm 8~\mu{\rm Jy}$), about 40 days later. These results suggest either an optically thin sub-mm synchrotron spectrum, or highly variable sub-mm jet emission on month timescales. Although the latter appears more likely, we note that, at the time of the ALMA observations, A0620-00 was in a somewhat less active optical-IR state than during all published multi-wavelength campaigns when a flat-spectrum, partially self-absorbed jet has been suggested to extend from the radio to the mid-IR regime. Either interpretation is viable in the context of an internal shock model, where the jet's spectral shape and variability are set by the power density spectrum of the shells' Lorentz factor fluctuations. While strictly simultaneous radio-mm-IR observations are necessary to draw definitive conclusions for A0620-00, the data presented here, in combination with recent radio and sub-mm results from higher luminosity systems, demonstrate that jets from black hole X-ray binaries exhibit a high level of variability - either in flux density or intrinsic spectral shape, or both - across a wide spectrum of Eddington ratios. This is not in contrast with expectations from an internal shock model, where lower jet power systems can be expected to exhibit larger fractional variability owing to an overall decrease in synchrotron absorption., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

The motions of gas and stars in the nuclei of nearby large galaxies have demonstrated that massive black holes are common and that their masses strongly correlate with the stellar velocity dispersion $\sigma_{\star}$ of the bulge. This correlation suggests that massive black holes and galaxies influence each other's growth. Dynamical measurements are less reliable when the sphere of influence is unresolved, thus it remains unknown whether this correlation exists in galaxies much smaller than the Milky Way, as well as what fraction of these galaxies have central black holes. Light echoes from photoionized clouds around accreting black holes, in combination with the velocity of these clouds, yield a direct mass measurement that circumvents this difficulty. Here we report an exceptionally low reverberation delay of $83\pm14$ minutes between variability in the accretion disk and high velocity H$\alpha$ emission from the nucleus of the bulgeless dwarf galaxy NGC~4395. Combined with the H$\alpha$ line-of-sight velocity dispersion $\sigma_{\rm line}=426\pm1$~km~s$^{-1}$, this lag determines a mass of about 10,000~$M_{\odot}$ for the black hole. This mass is among the smallest central black hole masses reported, near the low end of expected masses for heavy "seeds", and the best direct mass measurement for a galaxy of this size. Despite the lack of a bulge, NGC~4395 is consistent with the $M_{\rm BH} - \sigma_{\star}$ relation when $\sigma_{\star}$ is measured from the central region. Over the last two decades, the discovery of exoplanets has fundamentally changed our perception of the universe and humanity's place within it. Recent work indicates that a solar system's X-ray and high energy particle environment is of fundamental importance to the formation and development of the atmospheres of close-in planets such as hot Jupiters, and Earth-like planets around M stars. X-ray imaging and spectroscopy provide powerful and unique windows into the high energy flux that an exoplanet experiences, and X-ray photons also serve as proxies for potentially transfigurative coronal mass ejections. Finally, if the host star is a bright enough X-ray source, transit measurements akin to those in the optical and infrared are possible and allow for direct characterization of the upper atmospheres of exoplanets. It is now recognized that energetic stellar photon and particle radiation evaporates and erodes planetary atmospheres and controls upper atmospheric chemistry. Key exoplanet host stars will be too faint at X-ray wavelengths for accurate characterization using existing generation and future slated X-ray telescopes. Observation of stellar coronal mass ejections and winds are also beyond current instrumentation. In line with theCommittee on an Exoplanet Science Strategy recognition that holistic observational approaches are needed, we point out here that a full understanding of exoplanet atmospheres, their evolution and determination of habitability requires a powerful high-resolution X-ray imaging and spectroscopic observatory. We have compelling evidence for stellar-mass black holes (BHs) of ~5-80 M_sun that form through the death of massive stars. We also have compelling evidence for so-called supermassive BHs (10^5-10^10 M_sun) that are predominantly found in the centers of galaxies. We have very good reason to believe there must be BHs with masses in the gap between these ranges: the first ~10^9 M_sun BHs are observed only hundreds of millions of years after the Big Bang, and all theoretically viable paths to making supermassive BHs require a stage of "intermediate" mass. However, no BHs have yet been reliably detected in the 100-10}^5 M_sun mass range. Uncovering these intermediate-mass BHs of 10^3-10^5 M_sun is within reach in the coming decade. Massive 10^6-10^10 Msun black holes (BHs) are ubiquitous in local galactic nuclei. They were common by the time the Universe is several Gyr old, and many of them were in place within the first 1~Gyr after the Big Bang. Their quick assembly has been attributed to mechanisms such as the rapid collapse of gas into the nuclei of early protogalaxies, accretion and mergers of stellar-mass BHs accompanying structure formation at early times, and the runaway collapse of early, ultra-dense stellar clusters. The origin of the early massive BHs remains an intriguing and long-standing unsolved puzzle in astrophysics. Here we discuss strategies for discerning between BH seeding models using electromagnetic observations. We argue that the most direct answers will be obtained through detection of BHs with masses M<10^5 Msun at redshifts z>10, where we expect them to first form. Reaching out to these redshifts and down to these masses is crucial, because BHs are expected to lose the memory of their initial assembly by the time they grow well above 10^5 Msun and are incorporated into higher-mass galaxies. The best way to detect 10^4-10^5 Msun BHs at high redshifts is by a sensitive X-ray survey. Critical constraining power is augmented by establishing the properties and the environments of their host galaxies in deep optical/IR imaging surveys. Required OIR data can be obtained with the JWST and WFIRST missions. The required X-ray flux limits (down to 10^{-19} erg/s/cm^2) are accessible only with a next-generation X-ray observatory which has both high (sub-1") angular resolution and high throughput. A combination of deep X-ray and OIR surveys will be capable of probing several generic markers of the BH seed scenarios, and resolving the long-stanging puzzle of their origin. This document illustrates the feasibility of a few per cent level measurement of the local black hole occupation fraction in low mass galaxies through wide-field, high angular resolution X-ray imaging observations of local volume galaxies. The occupation fraction, particularly at the low end of the galaxy luminosity function, is a key benchmark for any model which aims to reproduce the formation and growth of super-massive black holes and their host galaxies. Much of the baryonic matter in the Universe, including the most active and luminous sources, are best studied in the X-ray band. Key advances in X-ray optics and detectors have paved the way for the Advanced X-ray Imaging Satellite (AXIS), a Probe-class mission that is a major improvement over Chandra, which has generated a steady stream of important discoveries for the past 2 decades. AXIS can be launched in the late 2020s and will transform our understanding in several major areas of astrophysics, including the growth and fueling of supermassive black holes, galaxy formation and evolution, the microphysics of cosmic plasmas, the time-variable universe, and a wide variety of cutting-edge studies. Relative to Chandra, the AXIS PSF is nearly twice as sharp on-axis; its field of view for subarcsecond imaging 70 times larger by area; its effective area at 1 keV is 10 times larger. The low-Earth orbit ensures a low and stable detector background, resulting in 50 times greater sensitivity than Chandra for extended sources. AXIS has a rapid repointing response with operations similar to Swift, but is 100 times more sensitive for time-domain science. These capabilities open up a vast discovery space and complement the next generation of astronomical observatories. A high-spectral-resolution mission (Athena) operating at the same time as a high-angular-resolution mission (AXIS) greatly increases the range of scientific discovery. AXIS will use lightweight X-ray optics made of thin single-crystal silicon mirrors developed at NASA Goddard. The detector array builds on a long legacy of X-ray CCD and provides improved photon localization, much faster readout time, and broader energy band. We characterize the incidence and intensity of low-level super-massive black hole activity within the Fornax cluster, through X-ray observations of the nuclei of 29 quiescent early-type galaxies. Using the \textit{Chandra X-ray Telescope}, we target 17 galaxies from the HST Fornax Cluster Survey, down to a uniform (3$\sigma$) limiting X-ray luminosity threshold of $5\cdot10^{38}$ergs$^{-1}$, which we combine with deeper, archival observations for an additional 12 galaxies. A nuclear X-ray point-source is detected in 11 out of 29 targets. After accounting for the low mass X-ray binary contamination to the nuclear X-ray signal, the X-ray active fraction is measured at $26.6\% \pm 9.6\%$. The results from this analysis are compared to similar investigations targeting quiescent early types in the Virgo cluster, as well as the field. After correcting for the different mass distributions, the measured Fornax active fraction is less than the field fraction, at more than 3$\sigma$, confirming that the funneling of gas to the nuclear regions of cluster members is inhibited compared to those galaxies in the field. At the same time, we find no statistically significant difference between Fornax and Virgo galaxies, with only marginal evidence for a lower active fraction in Fornax (1 $\sigma$); if real, owing to Fornax's higher galaxy number density, this could indicate that galaxy-galaxy interactions are more effective at gas removal than galaxy-gas effects., Comment: Accepted by ApJ

As an evolutionary phase of galaxies, active galactic nuclei (AGN) over a large range of redshift have been utilized for understanding cosmic evolution. In particular, the population and evolution of AGNs have been investigated through the study of the cosmic X-ray background in various fields. As one of the deep fields observed by Chandra with a total of 2.8 Msec exposures, Abell 133 is a special region to investigate AGNs, providing a testbed for probing the environmental effect on AGN trigger, since cluster environments can be different from field environments. The achieved flux limit of data at 50% completeness level of 6.95x10^(-16), 1.43x10^(-16), and 1.57x10^(-15) ergs cm^(-2) in 0.5-8, 0.5-2, and 2-8 keV. Using the wavdetect and no-source binomial probability (i.e., p<0.007), we analyze the combined \textit{Chandra} image, detecting 1617 (in 0.5-8 keV), 1324 (in 0.5-2 keV), and 1028 (in 2-8 keV), X-ray point sources in the Abell 133 region. Here, we present the X-ray point source catalogue with the source fluxes, which can be combined with multiwavelength data for future works. We find that the number count distribution of the X-ray point sources is well reproduced with a broken power-law model while the best-fit model parameters are sensitive to the fitting range of the number count distribution. Finally, we find an excess of the number density (decrease of AGN fraction) at the central region of the cluster, which reflects the effect of dense environments on AGN trigger, as similarly found in studies of other galaxy clusters., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 11 pages, 12 figures

Motivated by the large body of literature around the phenomenological properties of accreting black hole (BH) and neutron star (NS) X-ray binaries in the radio:X-ray luminosity plane, we carry out a comparative regression analysis on 36 BHs and 41 NSs in hard X-ray states, with data over 7 dex in X-ray luminosity for both. The BHs follow a radio to X-ray (logarithmic) luminosity relation with slope $\beta=0.59\pm0.02$, consistent with the NSs' slope ($\beta=0.44^{+0.05}_{-0.04}$) within 2.5$\sigma$. The best-fitting intercept for the BHs significantly exceeds that for the NSs, cementing BHs as more radio loud, by a factor $\sim$22. \This discrepancy can not be fully accounted for by the mass or bolometric correction gap, nor by the NS boundary layer contribution to the X-rays, and is likely to reflect physical differences in the accretion flow efficiency, or the jet powering mechanism. Once importance sampling is implemented to account for the different luminosity distributions, the slopes of the non-pulsating and pulsating NS subsamples are formally inconsistent ($>3\sigma$), unless the transitional millisecond pulsars (whose incoherent radio emission mechanism is not firmly established) are excluded from the analysis. RGG 118 (SDSS 1523+1145) is a nearby ($z=0.0243$), dwarf disk galaxy ($M_{\ast}\approx2\times10^{9} M_{\odot}$) found to host an active $\sim50,000$ solar mass black hole at its core (Baldassare et al. 2015). RGG 118 is one of a growing collective sample of dwarf galaxies known to contain active galactic nuclei -- a group which, until recently, contained only a handful of objects. Here, we report on new \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} Wide Field Camera 3 UVIS and IR imaging of RGG 118, with the main goal of analyzing its structure. Using 2-D parametric modeling, we find that the morphology of RGG 118 is best described by an outer spiral disk, inner component consistent with a pseudobulge, and central PSF. The luminosity of the PSF is consistent with the central point source being dominated by the AGN. We measure the luminosity and mass of the "pseudobulge" and confirm that the central black hole in RGG 118 is under-massive with respect to the $M_{BH}-M_{\rm bulge}$ and $M_{BH}-L_{\rm bulge}$ relations. Motivated by theoretical expectations that Nuclear Star Clusters (NSCs) in galactic centers may provide a favorable environment for super-massive black holes to form and/or efficiently grow, we set out to measure the fraction of nearby nucleated galaxies that also host an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN). We targeted a distance-limited sample of 98 objects with the Chandra X-ray Telescope, down to a uniform X-ray luminosity threshold of $\sim$10$^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The sample is composed of 47 late-types and 51 early-types, enabling us to further investigate the active fraction as a function of galactic morphology. After correcting for contamination to the nuclear X-ray signal from bright X-ray binaries, we measure an active fraction $f$=11.2$\%^{+7.4}_{-4.9}$ (1$\sigma$ C.L.) across the whole sample, in agreement with previous estimates based on an heterogeneous combination of optical, X-ray and radio diagnostics, by Seth et al. (2008). After accounting for the different stellar mass distributions in our samples, we find no statistically significant difference in the active fraction of early- vs. late-type nucleated galaxies, with $f$=10.6$\%^{+11.9}_{-4.9}$ and 10.8$\%^{+11.3}_{-6.3}$, respectively. For the early-type nucleated galaxies, we are able to carry out a controlled comparison with a parent sample of non-nucleated galaxies covering the same stellar mass range, finding again no statistically significant difference in the active fraction. Taken at face value, our findings suggest that the presence of a NSC does not facilitate nor enhance accretion-powered emission from a nuclear super-massive black hole.
