Abstract

Today, in a global level, the health sector and social services need alternatives to traditional medical treatment, therapy, rehabilitation, and work training. Green care is the use of agricultural farms and the biotic and abiotic elements of nature for health and therapy-promoting interventions as a base for promoting human mental and physical health, as well as quality of life. Animals, plants, crops, gardens, forests, and the landscape are used in recreational or work-related activities for: Psychiatric patients, mentally disabled persons, people with learning disabilities, depression and burnout problems, or a drug and alcohol addiction history, including youth and elderly people, young offenders, prisoners, people effected by natural disasters, and social service clients. Green care practices may be also useful for everyone who wants to maintain a health and quality life, and for students for on farm education. “Green care” as a base for promoting mental and physical health, through normal farming activity and is a growing movement to provide health, social or educational benefits through farming for a wide range of people. Provide services on a regular basis for participants who attend the farm or the forest activities regularly as part of a structured care, rehabilitation, therapeutic or educational programme. Green care provides “care”. Green care is a new multidisciplinary science. Besides science and practice, Green Care is a Global Innovative Movement with health, care, social, economical, educational, and political dimensions. This book presents up-to-data scientific knowledge in Green care, its definitions and theories, and findings to show the beneficial effects of Green care on human health and well being. 21. Pathways to health through Australian woodlands and forests: 'Sign-posts' from recent research and practice

Abstract

Health is inherently 'ecological' and the natural environment plays a crucial role in human health and well-being. Yet we do not necessarily design, manage or market such areas in ways that acknowledge this link. This paper draws on recent research by a Deakin University team exploring the links between use of and involvement in the maintenance of forests/woodlands, and health and well-being outcomes. Qualitative and quantitative methods have been used to collect data from forest/woodland users and tram volunteers contributing to management and maintenance of such areas, concerning their perceptions of the impacts of the experience on their health and well-being. In two of the projects, samples of 'users' and 'volunteers' were compared with samples 'non-users' and 'non-volunteers'. Several of the studies included the use of scales of self-rated health, social cohesion, and frequency of use of medical services.The studies have identified a range of perceived physical, mental and social health benefits resulting from use of and/or engagement with forests/woodlands. Study findings have implications for design, management and marketing of such areas, since they identity factors influencing use of and engagement with such areas, and have the potential to promote more widespread recognition of the value of such areas and more commitment to them by individuals, communities and governments. The challenge for us is to build on this research base to more clearly Signpost the mutually beneficial links between forest and woodland ecosystems and human health and well-being, creating new and better pathways to a healthy future.

26. Body composition and obesity among Greek forest workers and researchers.

Abstract

Objective: The main objective of this study was to investigate the body composition and obesity of forest workers, a high work physical activity group, and researchers, a sedentary work activity group, and to find if their workplace activities affect body composition and obesity. Methods: Twenty-two male forest workers and 22 male researchers were enrolled. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) measurements were used for body composition analysis by following the ESPEN guidelines. Anthropometric measurements including body weight and height were recorded. Participation was voluntary and participants provided oral informed consent. Results: Approximately 45.6% of the forest workers demonstrated normal body mass index (BMI) as compared with 13.0% for researchers. The majority of the researchers (43.5%) had a BMI indicative of obesity. When body fat (BF) was compared, 54.6% of the forest workers and 8.7% of the researchers had a normal level of %BF while 9.0% and 60.9% demonstrated very high values, respectively. Researchers were more likely to have high and very high values for body fat mass index (BFMI), while the forest workers demonstrated increased odds (OR:2.051, CI:1.199-3.511) for having normal body weight according to the BMI cut-offs. Conclusion: The results suggest that the sedentary workplace activities of researchers may be the cause of the high prevalence of overweight and obesity, while very physically active at workplace forest workers had more normal body composition. These findings may provide support for the idea of fighting sedentary habits among researchers by introducing more physical activities into their workplace daily duties and into their daily lives in general. 27. Linear Regression Models to Predict Special Post Production from Logs of Deresinated Aleppo Pine (Pinus halepensisMill.) Trees

Abstract

The goal of this study was to develop model equations to predict the production of special posts from aleppo pine (Pinus halepensisMill.) deresinated trees. Resin tapping causes some changes in the wood structure around the applied tapped area as a result of the resination of wood cells. Local communities have started to use timber from deresinated aleppo pine trees to produce small-sized posts for agriculture and green house use. The experimental sample consisted of 120 logs from the Sithonia peninsula forest in northern Greece. The logs were processed in a local sawmill to produce posts of four different sizes for agriculture use. The final product was 2-m-long posts measuring 4 by 4, 5 by 5, 6 by 6, and 8 by 8 cm.Posts measuring 4 by 4, 5 by 5, and 6 by 6 cm were to be used for field tomato cultivation and 8 by 8-cm posts were for use in vineyards.Linear regression model equations were developed for each post product. The models predicted the number of posts produced in relation to the diameter at the middle of the log and its utilized volume. On the basis of 120 logs processed, it was possible to draw secure associations using this model. Statistical analysis showed that the mean diameter effect was the most pronounced in all models.

Abstract

The link between modern lifestyles and increasing levels of chronic heart disease, obesity, stress and poor mental health is a concern across the world. The cost of dealing with these conditions places a large burden on national public health budgets so that policymakers are increasingly looking at prevention as a cost-effective alternative to medical treatment. Attention is turning towards interactions between the environment and lifestyles. Exploring the relationships between health, natural environments in general, and forests in particular, this groundbreaking book is the outcome of the European Union’s COST Action E39 ‘Forests, Trees and Human Health and Wellbeing’, and draws together work carried out over four years by scientists from 25 countries working in the fields of forestry, health, environment and social sciences. While the focus is primarily on health priorities defined within Europe, this volume explicitly draws also on research from North America and elsewhere and will have relevance worldwide. A state-of-the-art analysis of the global research on the topic of forests and human health, a key contribution of the book is its synthesis of material across both disciplines and nations, providing a vital reference for researchers in forestry, health, natural resource management and environmental policy. Abstract

Studies have found that the two main constraints to outdoor physical activity are reported to be ‘lack of time’ and ‘lack of information’. Constraints may be specific to particular target groups on the basis of gender, ethnicity/race, age group, ability and socio-economic status. Strategies aimed at promoting physical activity should aim at removing or mitigating as many target group related constraints as possible. Successful promotional messages need to be tailored to the specific group being targeted. Sustainable programs involve stakeholders in the decision-making process. The examples of physical activity programs from Europe featured in this chapter encompass a mix of good practice factors which include: good organization and structure (Walking the Way to Health, England); innovation and added-value information (Calorie maps, Wales); focus outside the physical exercise (Kjenmann Stjordal, Norway); socialization, play and fun (Children’s Trekking Club, Norway).

Abstract

Almost one year after the legislation all the processes for the collecting, land-filling, recycling, using and reusing of wood waste in Croatia, including recovered wood, are at the beginning. During the 2005 Croatian forests produced about 2.6 million of m3 of biomass (bark, leaves, branches, stumps, firewood). In the same time the Croatian wood industry processed more than 1.7 million m3 of recovered wood and wood waste. On the one hand the processes of collecting, land-filling, recycling and reusing are encumbered by old-fashioned practice and by the capital deficiency. On the other hand it is obvious that the management of wood recovering has good prospects in the future, particularly with regard to the substantial huge amount of waste and recovered wood created per year. In this article the new experiences and consequences of the implementation of Croatian legislation and particularly new National Strategy of Waste Management (NSWM) are presented. The aim of this paper is to explain the impact of other important socio-economic factors on the whole process.
