Abstract

BACKGROUND: falls and fall-related injuries are common in older adults, have negative effects on functional independence and quality of life and are associated with increased morbidity, mortality and health related costs. Current guidelines are inconsistent, with no up-to-date, globally applicable ones present. OBJECTIVES: to create a set of evidence- and expert consensus-based falls prevention and management recommendations applicable to older adults for use by healthcare and other professionals that consider: (i) a person-centred approach that includes the perspectives of older adults with lived experience, caregivers and other stakeholders; (ii) gaps in previous guidelines; (iii) recent developments in e-health and (iv) implementation across locations with limited access to resources such as low- and middle-income countries. METHODS: a steering committee and a worldwide multidisciplinary group of experts and stakeholders, including older adults, were assembled. Geriatrics and gerontological societies were represented. Using a modified Delphi process, recommendations from 11 topic-specific working groups (WGs), 10 ad-hoc WGs and a WG dealing with the perspectives of older adults were reviewed and refined. The final recommendations were determined by voting. RECOMMENDATIONS: all older adults should be advised on falls prevention and physical activity. Opportunistic case finding for falls risk is recommended for community-dwelling older adults. Those considered at high risk should be offered a comprehensive multifactorial falls risk assessment with a view to co-design and implement personalised multidomain interventions. Other recommendations cover details of assessment and intervention components and combinations, and recommendations for specific settings and populations. CONCLUSIONS: the core set of recommendations provided will require flexible implementation strategies that consider both local context and resources.

Abstract

The DARHT-II linear-induction accelerator has been successfully operated at 1.2-1.3 kA and 12.5-12.7 MeV to demonstrate the production and acceleration of an electron beam. Beam pulse lengths for these experiments were varied from 0.5 [micro]s to 1.2 [micro]s full-width half-maximum. A low-frequency inductance-capacitance (LC) oscillation of diode voltage and current resulted in an oscillation of the beam position through interaction with an accidental (static) magnetic dipole in the diode region. There was no growth in the amplitude of this oscillation after propagating more than 44 m through the accelerator, and there was no loss of beam current that could be measured. The results of these initial experiments are presented in this paper. Index Terms--Accelerator, accelerator measurement systems, induction accelerators, particle beams, stability.

Abstract

Capsicum annuum var. glabriusculum, is a variety of wild chili pepper belonging to the family Solanaceae and is considered as the origin for all cultivated chili species of the world. This species is an important genetic resource for agriculture and food, is widely distributed in northeastern Mexico in altitudes from 0 – 1200 m.a.s.l. This species grows mainly at low altitudes and its upper limit reaches 1000m., it prefers temperatures above 18.3O C and its production and harvest may ocurr at two seasons, one during the beginning of the summer and the main one ocurring in the middle of the autumn in northeast México. It is estimated that the main production occurs in the state of Tamaulipas with 84 tons per year and is harvested from 23 municipalities. Concentration of capseicins and dihydrocapsaicine from wild populations may vary considerably from one location to another in the municipalities, ecotypes and diverse climatic conditions from this wide geographic zone. The high demands of wild chili as well as the variability on concentration of capseicins in fruits are considered as some of the main reasons why intensive cultivation of this species should be carried out in Northeastern Mexico.

Abstract

Integration of environmental and endogenous cues at plant shoot meristems determines the timing of flowering and reproductive development. The MADS box transcription factor FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC) of Arabidopsis thaliana is an important repressor of floral transition, which blocks flowering until plants are exposed to winter cold. However, the target genes of FLC have not been thoroughly described, and our understanding of the mechanisms by which FLC represses transcription of these targets and how this repression is overcome during floral transition is still fragmentary. Here, we identify and characterize TARGET OF FLC AND SVP1 (TFS1), a novel target gene of FLC and its interacting protein SHORT VEGETATIVE PHASE (SVP). TFS1 encodes a B3-type transcription factor, and we show that tfs1 mutants are later flowering than wild-type, particularly under short days. FLC and SVP repress TFS1 transcription leading to deposition of trimethylation of Iysine 27 of histone 3 (H3K27me3) by the Polycomb Repressive Complex 2 at the TFS1 locus. During floral transition, after downregulation of FLC by cold, TFS1 transcription is promoted by SUPPRESSOR OF OVEREXPRESSION OF CONSTANS1 (SOC1), a MADS box protein encoded by another target of FLC/SVP. SOC1 opposes PRC function at TFS1 through recruitment of the histone demethylase RELATIVE OF EARLY FLOWERING 6 (REF6) and the SWI/SNF chromatin remodeler ATPase BRAHMA (BRM). This recruitment of BRM is also strictly required for SQUAMOSA PROMOTER BINDING PROTEIN-LIKE 9 (SPL9) binding at TFS1 to coordinate RNAPII recruitment through the Mediator complex. Thus, we show that antagonistic chromatin modifications mediated by different MADS box transcription factor complexes play a crucial role in defining the temporal and spatial patterns of transcription of genes within a network of interactions downstream of FLC/SVP during floral transition.

Abstract

The accuracy of density measurements and position resolution in flash (40 ns) radiography of thick objects with 24 Gev/c protons is investigated. A global model fit to step wedge data is shown to give a good description spanning the periodic table. The parameters obtained from the step wedge data are used to predict transmission through the French Test Object (FTO), a test object of nested spheres, to a precision better than 1%. Multiple trials have been used to show that the systematic errors are less than 2%. Absolute agreement between the average radiographic measurements of the density and the known density is 1%. Spatial resolution has been measured to be 200 μm at the center of the FTO. These data verify expectations of the benefits provided by high energy hadron radiography for thick objects. Abstract

Organic-inorganic hybrid materials are known for their outstanding chemical and physical properties. Although some studies have been published regarding the use of hybrids for biomedical applications, relationship between hydrophilic character and biodegradation, bioactivity and biocompatibility has not been studied yet. The sol–gel method has been chosen for the manufacturing of siloxane-polyurethane hybrids for the exceptional potential of the method to obtain nanostructured materials. The effect of the amount of the urethane oligomer (OPU) on the structure, hydrophilic character, degradability, bioactivity and citotoxicity was investigated. Gelling time of these hybrids increases linearly with the decrease on the Siloxane/OPU ratio up to an 80/20 value. Hydrophilic character of the hybrids can be modulated and affects dramatically the degradation rate of the specimens. A hybrid with a 50/50 Siloxane/OPU ratio displayed an appropriate degradation rate, bioactivity and lack of cell toxicity that makes this material a candidate for further studies for applications in bone regeneration.Los materiales híbridos Orgánico-Inorgánico son conocidos por sus excepcionales propiedades químicas y físicas. Aunque se han publicado algunos estudios respecto al uso de híbridos para aplicaciones biomédicas, aun faltan estudios que determinen la relación que existe entre el carácter hidrofílico de estos materiales y las propiedades que les permiten ser utilizados como biomateriales: degradación, bioactividad y biocompatibilidad. El método sol-gel se ha escogido para la fabricación de híbridos debido a la posibilidad de obtener materiales nanoestructurados que comprenden un componente orgánico y un inorgánico. Se investigó el efecto de la cantidad del olígomero de uretano (OPU) sobre la estructura, el carácter hidrofílico, la degradabilidad, la bioactividad y la citotoxicidad. El tiempo de gelificación de estos híbridos incrementa linealmente con la disminución en la relación Siloxano/OPU hasta un valor de 80/20. El carácter hidrofílico de los híbridos se puede modular y afectar considerablemente la velocidad de degradación de las muestras. Un híbrido con una relación 50/50 Siloxane/OPU muestra una velocidad de degradación, una bioactividad y falta de toxicidad que hacen a este material un candidato para futuros estudios para aplicaciones en regeneración ósea.

4 Páginas El objetivo del estudio fue estimar los parámetros genéticos de caracteres de crecimiento en alpacas Huacaya del Centro de Investigación y Producción (CIP) - Quimsachata del Instituto Nacional de Innovación Agraria INIA, Puno, Perú en la zona agroecológica de puna seca. Se analizaron 13688 registros de producción de alpacas Huacaya. Para el análisis de datos se ha utilizado un modelo animal que incluyó los efectos aleatorios genéticos aditivos directo y materno y de ambiente permanente materno. Los efectos fijos fueron el año de nacimiento, mes de nacimiento, color de la alpaca, sexo, la edad de la madre y las edades al destete y al año de edad se consideraron como covariables. La metodología de estimación de parámetros genéticos es del tipo frecuentista basada en el Método de Máxima Verosimilitud Restringida (REML) para lo cual se usó el programa VCE v 5.0. Las heredabilidades aditivas directas fueron: 0,0806 ± 0,036 para peso al nacimiento, 0,019 ± 0,030 para peso al destete y 0,121 ± 0,056 para peso al año de edad. Las heredabilidades aditivas maternas fueron: 0,280 ± 0,020 para peso al nacimiento, 0,245 ± 0,028 para peso al destete y 0,204 ± 0,042 para peso al año de edad. Las correlaciones genéticas aditivas directas fueron: para peso nacimiento con peso destete (0,411), peso nacimiento con peso al año de edad (0,287) y peso destete con peso al año de edad (0,878). Las correlaciones fenotípicas fueron de mediana a alta magnitud. Se concluye que las heredabilidades sugieren que la selección individual por peso al nacimiento, peso al destete y peso al año de edad resultará en un progreso genético bajo. Abstract

Este trabajo trata sobre la restauración, elaboración de la documentación técnica y determinación del nivel de limpieza del limpiador de núcleos con dióxido de carbono (CO2), cuya utilidad no ha podido ser debidamente aprovechada por falta de información técnica y desconocimiento del procedimiento de operación de éste equipo. Para ello, ha sido necesario el chequeo minucioso del equipo, la recopilación de la información técnica obtenida de los fabricantes de las partes que lo conforman y muchas horas de pruebas de laboratorio, cuyos resultados considerados exitosos señalan un nivel de limpieza promedio del 97.64 %. El limpiador de núcleos con CO2, es capaz de realizar la limpieza simultánea de hasta 50 muestras o núcleos saturados con fluidos originales del yacimiento petrolífero del cual hubieren sido extraídos. El lavado se realiza mezclando dos solventes, tolueno y dióxido de carbono, que a presión y temperatura atmosférica se encuentran en estado líquido y gaseoso respectivamente, para formar una mezcla homogénea de ambos fluidos, éstos son sometidos a una presión tal que el CO2 se condensa y se mezcla con el tolueno dentro de una cámara de alta presión en la que previo a la presurización se colocan los núcleos a ser lavados.

Abstract

Multiple spall and damage layers can be created in metal when the free surface reflects a Taylor wave generated by high explosives. These phenomena have been explored in different thicknesses of several metals (tantalum, copper, 6061 T6-aluminum, and tin) using high-energy proton radiography. Multiple images (up to 21) can be produced of the dynamic evolution of damaged material on the microsecond time scale with a <50 ns “shutter” time. Movies and multiframe still images of areal and (Abel inverted) volume densities are presented. Abstract

There are three stages involved in the successful application of a thin film sol-gel oxide, (1) solution synthesis, (2) application, and (3) post application treatments. Each stage contains many processing steps that can be varied in order to optimize the thin film for various applications. This work entails a statistical investigation of a thin film sol-gel PT process for use in memory applications. Statistical experimental design yields a maximum amount of information for a minimum amount of effort. Candidate controllable variables (factors) and responses are first identified. A screening experiment is then conducted to identify the most important factors based on the identified responses. A full-factorial experiment is then conducted to further evaluate the important factors. Finally, a response surface analysis is performed in order to optimize the important factors.
