Abstract

In this letter we report the first scientific result based on antineutrinos emitted from the BR2 reactor at SCK CEN. The SoLid experiment uses a novel type of highly granular detector whose basic detection unit combines two scintillators, PVT and 6LiF:ZnS(Ag), to measure antineutrinos via their inverse-beta-decay products. An advantage of PVT is its highly linear response as a function of deposited particle energy. The full-scale detector comprises 12800 voxels and operates over a very short 6.3--8.9 m baseline from the reactor core. The detector segmentation and its 3D imaging capabilities facilitate the extraction of the positron energy from the rest of the visible energy, allowing the latter to be utilised for signal-background discrimination. We present a result based on 280 reactor-on days (55 MW mean power) and 172 reactor-off days, respectively, of live data-taking. A total of 29479 $\pm$ 603 (stat.) antineutrino candidates have been selected, corresponding to an average rate of 105 events per day and a signal-to-background ratio of 0.27. A search for disappearance of antineutrinos to a sterile state has been conducted using complementary model-dependent frequentist and Bayesian fits, providing constraints on the allowed region of the Reactor Antineutrino Anomaly., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

A technique to evaluate the refractive index, the absorption coefficient and the thickness of holographic recording materials is presented. The materials are in the form of a thin layer of film deposited on a thick glass plate. The experimental reflectances of p-polarized light are measured as a function of the incident angle, and the values of refractive index, thickness and absorption coefficient of the layer are obtained using the theoretical equation for reflectance. As examples, holographic silver halide emulsions and photopolymers are analyzed. The agreement between the calculated reflectances, using the thickness and refractive index obtained, and the measured reflectances is satisfactory.Se presenta una técnica experimental para determinar el índice de refracción, el coeficiente de absorción y el espesor de materiales de registro holográfico. Los materiales están depositados como capas finas sobre una lámina planoparalela de vidrio. Se determina experimentalmente la reflectancia en función del ángulo de incidencia para luz polarizada linealmente paralela al plano de incidencia, de modo que los valores del índice de refracción, el coeficiente de absorción y el espesor se obtienen ajustando la ecuación de la reflectancia teórica a los datos experimentales. Como ejemplos se han analizado emulsiones fotográficas y fotopolímeros, obteniéndose un buen ajuste entre la función teórica y los datos experimentales.

Abstract

A stellar occultation by Neptune's main satellite, Triton, was observed on 5 October 2017 from Europe, North Africa, and the USA. We derived 90 light curves from this event, 42 of which yielded a central flash detection. We aimed at constraining Triton's atmospheric structure and the seasonal variations of its atmospheric pressure since the Voyager 2 epoch (1989). We also derived the shape of the lower atmosphere from central flash analysis. We used Abel inversions and direct ray-tracing code to provide the density, pressure, and temperature profiles in the altitude range $\sim$8 km to $\sim$190 km, corresponding to pressure levels from 9 {\mu}bar down to a few nanobars. Results. (i) A pressure of 1.18$\pm$0.03 {\mu}bar is found at a reference radius of 1400 km (47 km altitude). (ii) A new analysis of the Voyager 2 radio science occultation shows that this is consistent with an extrapolation of pressure down to the surface pressure obtained in 1989. (iii) A survey of occultations obtained between 1989 and 2017 suggests that an enhancement in surface pressure as reported during the 1990s might be real, but debatable, due to very few high S/N light curves and data accessible for reanalysis. The volatile transport model analysed supports a moderate increase in surface pressure, with a maximum value around 2005-2015 no higher than 23 {\mu}bar. The pressures observed in 1995-1997 and 2017 appear mutually inconsistent with the volatile transport model presented here. (iv) The central flash structure does not show evidence of an atmospheric distortion. Abstract

In this work a three-dimensional diffusion model is used to model photopolymers as a recording media. This model allows us to predict the properties of the Diffractive Optical Elements (DOEs) once we recorded into the photopolymer. This model had never been tested with more complex elements, such as multifocal diffractive lenses, as presented in the following in this work. In addition, the model includes; the estimation of the refractive index modulation, the low-pass filtering effect due to the experimental optical setup, and the evolution of the transverse intensity distribution. In this way, the selection of the appropriate material characteristics depending on the intended DOE application is made possible. Specifically, an acrylamide-based PVA/AA photopolymer is simulated using the proposed model. Moreover, coverplating and index matching systems are considered together to avoid the effects of thickness variation. Furthermore, in order to compare their properties using the proposed model, we focus on Fibonacci lenses (FL), a type of bifocal lenses. This allows us to evaluate the dependence of the focii intensity on the polymerisation rate, the diffusivity parameter, low-pass filtering effect and the use of the index matching system for these lenses. This enables us to know the recording parameters in order to produce this type of multifocal diffractive lenses with higher quality and precision.

Abstract

In the present work, the viability of a novel recording geometry to produce reflection holographic couplers is analyzed. Recalling the idea of previous works, photopolymers are used as the recording material because they have been proven to be well-suited for the intended see-through application: the capability to provide a virtual image without compromising the information about the surrounding environment. Moreover, holography fundamentals give us the proper background to examine the proposed design, where no prisms or microlenses arrays are used. Aiming to support the analysis, we provide experimental evidence that the produced reflection holographic gratings exhibit the correct properties to work as a coupler, where the sensitivity of the material and its properties are studied and examined.

Abstract

The well-known quasar SDSS J095253.83+011421.9 (J0952+0114) at z=3.02 has one of the most peculiar spectra discovered so far, showing the presence of narrow Ly$\alpha$ and broad metal emission lines. Although recent studies have suggested that a Proximate Damped Ly$\alpha$ system (PDLA) causes this peculiar spectrum, the origin of the gas associated with the PDLA is unknown. Here we report the results of MUSE observations that reveal a new giant ($\approx$ 100 physical kpc) Lyman $\alpha$ nebula. The detailed analysis of the Ly$\alpha$ velocity, velocity dispersion, and surface brightness profiles suggests that the J0952+0114 Ly$\alpha$ nebula shares similar properties of other QSO nebulae previously detected with MUSE, implying that the PDLA in J0952+0144 is covering only a small fraction of the QSO emission solid angle. We also detected bright and spectrally narrow CIV$\lambda$1550 and HeII$\lambda$1640 extended emission around J0952+0114 with velocity centroids similar to the peak of the extended and central narrow Ly$\alpha$ emission. The presence of a peculiarly bright, unresolved, and relatively broad HeII$\lambda$1640 emission in the central region at exactly the same PDLA redshift hints at the possibility that the PDLA originates in a clumpy outflow with a bulk velocity of about 500 km/s. The smaller velocity dispersion of the large scale Ly$\alpha$ emission suggests that the high-speed outflow is confined to the central region. Lastly, the derived spatially resolved HeII/Ly$\alpha$ and CIV/Ly$\alpha$ maps show a positive gradient with the distance to the QSO hinting at a non-homogeneous ionization parameter distribution., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures and 2 tables; Accepted for publication in ApJ

12. Electronic structure and polaronic charge distributions of Fe vacancy clusters in Fe$_{1-x}$O

Abstract

We perform a detailed study of the electronic structure of Fe$_{1-x}$O at moderate values of $x$. Our results evidence that the Fe vacancies introduce significant local modifications of the structural, electronic and magnetic features, that serve to explain the origin of the measured dependencies of the physical properties on $x$. The final properties are determined by a complex interplay of the charge demand from O, the magnetic interactions, and the charge order at the Fe sublattice. Furthermore, polaronic distributions of charge resembling those at magnetite, Fe$_3$O$_4$, emerge for the most stable defect structures. This defines a unique scenario to understand the nature of the short-range correlations in Fe$_3$O$_4$, and unveils their intimate connection to the long-range charge order developed below the Verwey transition temperature., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

In the present work, a 3-Dimensional diffusion model is proposed to predict the main properties of Diffractive Optical Elements (DOEs), recorded in photopolymers, including refractive index modulation and the evolution of the transverse intensity distribution. The model enables the selection of appropriate material characteristics based on the intended application of the DOE. Specifically, a PVA/AA photopolymer based on acrylamide is simulated using the proposed model, considering coverplating and index matching systems to mitigate the effects of thickness variation. In order to compare its properties using the suggested model, the simulation focuses on a Fibonacci Lens and the dependece of the intensity on the polymerization rate. Accordingly, axial intensity pattern is represented to prove the bifocal-behaviour of these diffractive lenses.

Abstract

The adsorption of hydrogen on the polar Zn-ended ZnO(0001) surface has been investigated by density functional {\it ab-initio} calculations. An on top H(1x1) ordered overlayer with genuine H-Zn chemical bonds is shown to be energetically favorable. The H covered surface is metallic and spin-polarized, with a noticeable magnetic moment at the surface region. Lower hydrogen coverages lead to strengthening of the H-Zn bonds, corrugation of the surface layer and to an insulating surface. Our results explain experimental observations of hydrogen adsorption on this surface, and not only predict a metal-insulator transition, but primarily provide a method to reversible switch surface magnetism by varying the hydrogen density on the surface., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We present detailed numerical studies of the magnetic anisotropy energy of a magnetic impurity near the surface of metallic hosts (Au and Cu), that we describe in terms of a realistic tight-binding surface Green's function technique. We study the case when spin-orbit coupling originates from the d-band of the host material and we also investigate the case of a strong local spin-orbit coupling on the impurity itself. The splitting of the impurity's spin-states is calculated to leading order in the exchange interaction between the impurity and the host atoms using a diagrammatic Green's function technique. The magnetic anisotropy constant is an oscillating function of the separation d from the surface: it asymptotically decays as 1/d2 and its oscillation period is determined by the extremal vectors of the host's Fermi Surface. Our results clearly show that the host-induced magnetic anisotropy energy is by several orders of magnitude smaller than the anisotropy induced by the local mechanism, which provides sufficiently large anisotropy values to explain the size dependence of the Kondo resistance observed experimentally., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, submitted to PRB

Abstract

First principles calculations of the O surfaces of Co-ZnO show that substitutional Co ions develop large magnetic moments which long-range coupling depends on their mutual distance. The local spin polarization induced at the O atoms is three times larger at the surface than in the bulk, and the surface stability is considerably reinforced by Co. Moreover, a robust ferromagnetic state is predicted at the Oxygen (0001) surface even in the absence of magnetic atoms. The occurrence of surface magnetic moments correlates with the number of {\it p}-holes in the valence band of the oxide, and the distribution of the magnetic charge is, even in the absence of spin-orbit interaction, highly anisotropic.

We propose a new mechanism for surface-induced magnetic anisotropy to explain the thickness-dependence of the Kondo resistivity of thin films of dilute magnetic alloys. The surface anisotropy energy, generated by spin-orbit coupling on the magnetic impurity itself, is an oscillating function of the distance d from the surface and decays as 1/d^2. Abstract

The occurence of spin-polarization at ZrO$_{2}$, Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ and MgO surfaces is proved by means of \textit{ab-initio} calculations within the density functional theory. Large spin moments, as high as 1.56 $\mu_B$, develop at O-ended polar terminations, transforming the non-magnetic insulator into a half-metal. The magnetic moments mainly reside in the surface oxygen atoms and their origin is related to the existence of $2p$ holes of well-defined spin polarization at the valence band of the ionic oxide. The direct relation between magnetization and local loss of donor charge makes possible to extend the magnetization mechanism beyond surface properties.

Abstract

Nuclear reactors are uniquely powerful, abundant, and flavor-pure sources of antineutrinos that continue to play a vital role in the US neutrino physics program. The US reactor antineutrino physics community is a diverse interest group encompassing many detection technologies and many particle physics topics, including Standard Model and short-baseline oscillations, BSM physics searches, and reactor flux and spectrum modeling. The community's aims offer strong complimentary with numerous aspects of the wider US neutrino program and have direct relevance to most of the topical sub-groups composing the Snowmass 2021 Neutrino Frontier. Reactor neutrino experiments also have a direct societal impact and have become a strong workforce and technology development pipeline for DOE National Laboratories and universities. This white paper, prepared as a submission to the Snowmass 2021 community organizing exercise, will survey the state of the reactor antineutrino physics field and summarize the ways in which current and future reactor antineutrino experiments can play a critical role in advancing the field of particle physics in the next decade., Contribution to Snowmass 2021

Abstract

International audience; SummaryMaximizing phase modulation in photopolymers remains a challenge in order to use these materials to fabricate photonics devices. Different material compositions and irradiation conditions have been studied in order to achieve it. One of the main conclusions has been that with continuous laser exposure better results are achieved. However, our results show that higher phase modulation can be achieved using pulsed laser. The study has been done with crosslinked acrylamide based photopolymers and Holographic Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystals (H-PDLC) exposed with a pulsed laser (532 nm). The increment of the phase modulation between the pulsed laser and continuous laser exposition is 17%, achieving a maximum phase depth of 3π radians and a refractive index modulation of 0.0084 at the zero spatial frequency limit, where monomer diffusion does not take place. This opens the door to use this photopolymer in large scale manufacturing.In this sense, we have used the H-PDLC photopolymers material to fabricate tunable lenses by using the Laser Induced Forward Transfer (LIFT) technique. Using a laser of 1030 nm with a pulse duration of 250 fs and a power window very small (90mW), we have achieved to print for the first time micro-lenses of low absorbency photopolymer without using an absorption layer (DRL, or dynamic release layer, exclusively metallic). This DRL is used to absorb the laser energy and, when ejected, drives the polymer layer. It has been possible to print lenses on both on glass and ITO slides. On glass, the lens is 10 µm in diameter and 400 nm in height, compared to 15 µm and 350 nm achieved on ITO.AbstractThe fabrication of polymeric lens arrays for its use in wide-field visual systems is a challenge that is being addressed by using the Laser Induced Forward Transfer (LIFT) technique but in processes that require intermediate steps [ ], which slows down manufacturing time. Our goal is therefore to achieve one-step, adjustable laser printing process improving the overall printing quality. Another challenge when using tunable polymers is the customization of tunable focal lenses dynamically controlling their optical properties. In this work we address both aspects by using a tunable photopolymer thanks to liquid crystal molecules, such as H-PDLC [ ].In the first stage of the study, we check the behavior of photopolymers when exposed with a pulsed laser (532 nm). In particular, the effect of high-frequency irradiation has been proven in comparison with low-frequency in previous studies. The main conclusion is that with high frequencies, more than 20 kHz (period of 50 µs), higher phase depth values (until 3π) than the CW irradiations can be achieved with increments of up to a maximum of 17% and a refractive index modulation of until 0.0084. This is because the pulse off time is long enough to allow a high regeneration of the starting dye but not too long to avoid the reaction between growing polymer-chain and new free-radical, leading to higher polymerization rates. That means a good performance of these photopolymers when irradiated with pulsed laser.The use of the LIFT with polymers has a limitation since the polymer is not capable of absorbing the energy of the laser and, therefore, it cannot be ejected. That is why it is common to use an absorption layer (DRL, or dynamic release layer), which absorbs the laser energy and, when ejected, drives the polymer layer [ ].This DRL is often a problem as it can contaminate the top of the printed polymer with small ejected particles, affecting its optical performance.In this study, we show for the first time that it was possible to print a low absorbency photopolymer without DRL. For this we used a laser of 1030 nm, pulse duration between 250 fs, and a power window very small (90mW), as slightly higher power generates a splashing process that stains the surface. In addition, the distance between recipient and donor substrates should also be very small (20- 90 µm), so that the cavitation bubble touches the receiver, due to the high density and viscosity of the polymer it does not allow the formation of ink jets. 48. An Experiment in Heat Conduction Using Hollow Cylinders

Abstract

An experimental apparatus was designed and built to allow students to carry out heat conduction experiments in hollow cylinders made of different materials, as well as to determine the thermal conductivity of these materials. The evolution of the temperature difference between the inner and outer walls of the cylinder as a function of time is analysed, and when the process reaches the steady state regime the thermal conductivity can be easily calculated. Several materials such as wood, plastic and metals are considered and the values of their thermal conductivities, obtained experimentally, are compared with those given in the reference list.
