The Maunder Minimum (MM) was a period of prolonged solar activity minimum between 1645 and 1715. Several works have identified a significant number of problematic spotless days in the MM included in existing databases. We have found a list of exact spotless (in the second half of 1709) and spot days (January and August 1709) provided by Johann Heinrich Muller. We computed the most probable value and upper/lower limits of the active day fraction (ADF) from Muller's data using the hypergeometrical probability distribution. Our sample is not strictly random because Muller recorded observations in consecutive days when he observed sunspots. Therefore, our result represents an upper threshold of solar activity for 1709. We compared this result with annual values of the ADF calculated for the Dalton Minimum and the most recent solar cycles. We concluded that it was less active than most years both in the Dalton Minimum and in the most recent solar cycles. Therefore, the solar activity level estimated in this work for 1709 represents robust evidence of low solar activity levels in the MM.

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
Continuous gravitational waves (CWs) emission from neutron stars carries information about their internal structure and equation of state, and it can provide tests of General Relativity. We present a search for CWs from a set of 45 known pulsars in the first part of the fourth LIGO--Virgo--KAGRA observing run, known as O4a. We conducted a targeted search for each pulsar using three independent analysis methods considering the single-harmonic and the dual-harmonic emission models. We find no evidence of a CW signal in O4a data for both models and set upper limits on the signal amplitude and on the ellipticity, which quantifies the asymmetry in the neutron star mass distribution. For the single-harmonic emission model, 29 targets have the upper limit on the amplitude below the theoretical spin-down limit. The lowest upper limit on the amplitude is $6.4\!\times\!10^{-27}$ for the young energetic pulsar J0537-6910, while the lowest constraint on the ellipticity is $8.8\!\times\!10^{-9}$ for the bright nearby millisecond pulsar J0437-4715. Additionally, for a subset of 16 targets we performed a narrowband search that is more robust regarding the emission model, with no evidence of a signal. We also found no evidence of non-standard polarizations as predicted by the Brans-Dicke theory., Comment: main paper: 12 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
In the context of kilonova (KN) modeling, the present work focusses on large-scale atomic data and opacity computations for all heavy elements from Ca to Lr, with a special effort on lanthanides and actinides, for a grid of typical KN ejecta conditions between one day and one week after the merger (corresponding to the LTE photosphere phase of the KN ejecta). In order to do so, we used the pseudo-relativistic Hartree-Fock (HFR) method, in which the choice of the interaction configuration model is of crucial importance. In this paper, HFR atomic data and opacities for all elements between Ca (Z = 20) and Lr (Z = 103) are presented, with a special focus on lanthanides and actinides. Besides, we also discuss the contribution of every single element to the total KN ejecta opacity for a given neutron star merger model, depending on their Planck mean opacities and elemental abundances. An important result is that lanthanides are found to not be the dominant sources of opacity, at least on average. The impact on KN light curves of considering such atomic-physics based opacity data instead of typical crude approximation formulae is also evaluated. In addition, the importance of taking the ejecta composition into account directly in the expansion opacity determination (instead of estimating single-element opacities) is highlighted. A database containing all the relevant atomic data and opacity tables has also been created and published online along with this work.

We tackle the problem of bundle adjustment (i.e., simultaneous refinement of camera poses and scene map) for a purely rotating event camera. Starting from first principles, we formulate the problem as a classical non-linear least squares optimization. The photometric error is defined using the event generation model directly in the camera rotations and the semi-dense scene brightness that triggers the events. We leverage the sparsity of event data to design a tractable Levenberg-Marquardt solver that handles the very large number of variables involved. To the best of our knowledge, our method, which we call Event-based Photometric Bundle Adjustment (EPBA), is the first event-only photometric bundle adjustment method that works on the brightness map directly and exploits the space-time characteristics of event data, without having to convert events into image-like representations. Comprehensive experiments on both synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate EPBA's effectiveness in decreasing the photometric error (by up to 90%), yielding results of unparalleled quality. The refined maps reveal details that were hidden using prior state-of-the-art rotation-only estimation methods. The experiments on modern high-resolution event cameras show the applicability of EPBA to panoramic imaging in various scenarios (without map initialization, at multiple resolutions, and in combination with other methods, such as IMU dead reckoning or previous event-based rotation estimation methods). We make the source code publicly available. https://github.com/tub-rip/epba, Comment: 21 pages, 19 figures, 10 tables. Project page: https://github.com/tub-rip/epba

Previous studies have demonstrated that not each sample in a dataset is of equal importance during training. Data pruning aims to remove less important or informative samples while still achieving comparable results as training on the original (untruncated) dataset, thereby reducing storage and training costs. However, the majority of data pruning methods are applied to image classification tasks. To our knowledge, this work is the first to explore the feasibility of these pruning methods applied to object re-identification (ReID) tasks, while also presenting a more comprehensive data pruning approach. By fully leveraging the logit history during training, our approach offers a more accurate and comprehensive metric for quantifying sample importance, as well as correcting mislabeled samples and recognizing outliers. Furthermore, our approach is highly efficient, reducing the cost of importance score estimation by 10 times compared to existing methods. Our approach is a plug-and-play, architecture-agnostic framework that can eliminate/reduce 35%, 30%, and 5% of samples/training time on the VeRi, MSMT17 and Market1501 datasets, respectively, with negligible loss in accuracy (< 0.1%). The lists of important, mislabeled, and outlier samples from these ReID datasets are available at https://github.com/Zi-Y/data-pruning-reid.

Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
The recent discovery of superconductivity in $\rm La_3Ni_2O_7$ has attracted significant attention due to its high critical temperature and analogy to cuprate oxides. The oxidation and spin states of Ni ions are among the most important local properties in this compound, extensively discussed in the context of its superconductivity. Despite their direct link to the electron filling configurations of the relevant $\rm 3d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $\rm 3d_{z^2}$ orbitals, these local electronic properties of $\rm La_3Ni_2O_7$ yet to be systematically investigated. In this work, we address this issue using x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) measurements under pressure. Comparison of Ni \textit{K}-edge XAS and $\rm K\beta$ XES with the reference spectra of $\rm NiO$ and $\rm LaNiO_3$ shows that Ni ions, with an average valence of $\sim 2.53+$, are in a low-spin ($\rm S = 1/2$) ground state under ambient conditions. High pressure XAS and XES data clearly show that the oxidation ($\sim 2.5+$) and spin ($\rm S = 1/2$) states of Ni ions remain stable across the investigated pressure (up to 30 GPa) and temperature (down to 10 K) ranges, ruling out previously proposed spin transition scenarios.

This work presents PyPSA-Spain, an open-source model of the Spanish energy system based on the European model PyPSA-Eur. It aims to leverage the benefits of single-country modelling over a multi-country approach. In particular, several databases provided by Spanish institutions are exploited to improve the estimation of solar photovoltaic (PV) and onshore wind generation hourly profiles, as well as the spatio-temporal description of the electricity demand. PyPSA-Spain attains hourly resolution for a entire year and represents the Spanish energy system using a configurable number of nodes, while selecting around 35-50 nodes is identified as a good compromise between spatial resolution and model simplicity. To accommodate cross-border interactions, a nested model approach with PyPSA-Eur was used, wherein time-dependent electricity prices from neighbouring countries were precomputed through the optimisation of the European energy system. As a case study, the optimal electricity mix for 2030 was obtained and compared with the latest update of the Spanish National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) from September 2024., Comment: 45 pages, 35 figures, 4 appendices

The Compton Spectrometer and Imager balloon payload (COSI-Balloon) is a wide-field-of-view Compton ${\gamma}$-ray telescope that operates in the 0.2 - 5 MeV bandpass. COSI-Balloon had a successful 46-day flight in 2016 during which the instrument observed the Crab Nebula, Cygnus X-1, and Centaurus A. Using the data collected by the COSI-Balloon instrument during this flight, we present the source flux extraction of signals from the variable balloon background environment and produce images of these background-dominated sources by performing Richardson-Lucy deconvolutions. We also present the spectra measured by the COSI-Balloon instrument, compare and combine them with measurements from other instruments, and fit the data. The Crab Nebula was observed by COSI-Balloon and we obtain a measured flux in the energy band 325 - 480 keV of (4.5 ${\pm}$ 1.6) ${\times}$ 10$^{-3}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. The model that best fits the COSI-Balloon data combined with measurements from NuSTAR and Swift-BAT is a broken power law with a measured photon index ${\Gamma}$ = 2.20 ${\pm}$ 0.02 above the 43 keV break. Cygnus X-1 was also observed during this flight, and we obtain a measured flux of (1.4 ${\pm}$ 0.2) ${\times}$ 10$^{-3}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ in the same energy band and a best-fit result (including data from NuSTAR, Swift-BAT, and INTEGRAL/ IBIS) was to a cutoff power law with a high-energy cutoff energy of 138.3 ${\pm}$ 1.0 keV and a photon index of ${\Gamma}$ = 1.358 ${\pm}$ 0.002. Lastly, we present the measured spectrum of Centaurus A and our best model fit to a power law with a photon index of ${\Gamma}$ = 1.73 ${\pm}$ 0.01.

10. Hilbert space separability and the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen state

Quantum Physics ,Mathematical Physics - Abstract
Quantum mechanics is formulated on a Hilbert space that is assumed to be separable. However, there seems to be no clear reason justifying this assumption. Does it have physical implications? We answer in the positive by proposing a test that witnesses the non-separability of the Hilbert space, at the expense of requiring measurements with uncountably many outcomes. In the search for a less elusive manifestation of non-separability, we consider the original Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) state as a candidate for possessing nonlocal correlations stronger than any state in a separable Hilbert space. Nevertheless, we show that, under mild assumptions, this state is not a vector in any bipartite space, even non-separable, and therefore cannot be described within the standard Hilbert space formalism., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure

Computer Science - Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition - Abstract
Tree height estimation serves as an important proxy for biomass estimation in ecological and forestry applications. While traditional methods such as photogrammetry and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) offer accurate height measurements, their application on a global scale is often cost-prohibitive and logistically challenging. In contrast, remote sensing techniques, particularly 3D tomographic reconstruction from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery, provide a scalable solution for global height estimation. SAR images have been used in earth observation contexts due to their ability to work in all weathers, unobscured by clouds. In this study, we use deep learning to estimate forest canopy height directly from 2D Single Look Complex (SLC) images, a derivative of SAR. Our method attempts to bypass traditional tomographic signal processing, potentially reducing latency from SAR capture to end product. We also quantify the impact of varying numbers of SLC images on height estimation accuracy, aiming to inform future satellite operations and optimize data collection strategies. Compared to full tomographic processing combined with deep learning, our minimal method (partial processing + deep learning) falls short, with an error 16-21\% higher, highlighting the continuing relevance of geometric signal processing.

Tracking any point (TAP) recently shifted the motion estimation paradigm from focusing on individual salient points with local templates to tracking arbitrary points with global image contexts. However, while research has mostly focused on driving the accuracy of models in nominal settings, addressing scenarios with difficult lighting conditions and high-speed motions remains out of reach due to the limitations of the sensor. This work addresses this challenge with the first event camera-based TAP method. It leverages the high temporal resolution and high dynamic range of event cameras for robust high-speed tracking, and the global contexts in TAP methods to handle asynchronous and sparse event measurements. We further extend the TAP framework to handle event feature variations induced by motion - thereby addressing an open challenge in purely event-based tracking - with a novel feature alignment loss which ensures the learning of motion-robust features. Our method is trained with data from a new data generation pipeline and systematically ablated across all design decisions. Our method shows strong cross-dataset generalization and performs 135% better on the average Jaccard metric than the baselines. Moreover, on an established feature tracking benchmark, it achieves a 19% improvement over the previous best event-only method and even surpasses the previous best events-and-frames method by 3.7%., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, 7 tables

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
According to the celebrated singularity theorems, space-time singularities in general relativity are inevitable. However, it is generally believed that singularities do not exist in nature, and their existence suggests the necessity of a new theory of gravity. In this paper, we investigated a regular astrophysically viable space-time (regular in the sense that it is singularity-free) from the observational point of view using observations from the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA (LVK), and the event horizon telescope (EHT) collaborations. This black hole solution depends on a free parameter $\ell$ in addition to the mass, $M$, and the spin, $a$, violating, in this way, the non-hair theorem/conjecture. In the case of gravitational wave observations, we use the catalogs GWTC-1, 2, and 3 to constrain the free parameter. In the case of the EHT, we use the values of the angular diameter reported for SgrA* and M87*. We also investigated the photon ring structure by considering scenarios such as static spherical accretion, infalling spherical accretion, and thin accretion disk. Our results show that the EHT observations constrain the free parameter $\ell$ to the intervals $0\leq \ell \leq 0.148$ and $0\leq \ell \leq 0.212$ obtained for SgrA* and M87*, respectively. On the other hand, GW observations constrain the free parameter with values that satisfy the theoretical limit, particularly those events for which $\ell<<1$. Our results show that the most stringent constraints on $\ell$ correspond to the events GW191204-171526 ($\ell=0.041^{+0.106}_{-0.041}$) and GW190924-021846 ($\ell=0.050^{+0.165}_{-0.050}$) for the SEOB model., Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
Black hole accretion disks are a fascinating topic in astrophysics, as they play a crucial role in several high-energy situations. This paper investigates the optical appearance of scalar hairy black holes (SHBHs) with asymmetric potential, a numerical solution obtained in Phys. Rev. D 73, 084002 (2006) and discussed in Phys.Rev.D 108 (2023) 4, 044020. Since the solution is spherically symmetric and surrounded by a thin accretion disk, we base our analysis on the work of J.~P. Lumininet (1979). We discuss the behavior of the effective potential for massive and massless particles, the innermost stable circular orbits (ISCO), and the photon sphere radius for different SHBHs. The study includes the plots of isoradial curves and spectral shifts arising from gravitational and Doppler shifts by considering direct and secondary images. Based on the work of Page and Thorne (1974), we also investigate the intrinsic intensity of radiation emitted by the disk at a given radius, which allows the calculation of the distribution of observed bolometric flux. We use the angular size of the shadow reported by the EHT for Sagittarius A* and M87* to constrain the SHBHs parameters., Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures

Tree species classification plays an important role in nature conservation, forest inventories, forest management, and the protection of endangered species. Over the past four decades, remote sensing technologies have been extensively utilized for tree species classification, with Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) emerging as a key technique. In this study, we employed TomoSense, a 3D tomographic dataset, which utilizes a stack of single-look complex (SLC) images, a byproduct of SAR, captured at different incidence angles to generate a three-dimensional representation of the terrain. Our research focuses on evaluating multiple tabular machine-learning models using the height information derived from the tomographic image intensities to classify eight distinct tree species. The SLC data and tomographic imagery were analyzed across different polarimetric configurations and geosplit configurations. We investigated the impact of these variations on classification accuracy, comparing the performance of various tabular machine-learning models and optimizing them using Bayesian optimization. Additionally, we incorporated a proxy for actual tree height using point cloud data from Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) to provide height statistics associated with the model's predictions. This comparison offers insights into the reliability of tomographic data in predicting tree species classification based on height.

This work describes the process of integrating a depth camera into the navigation system of a self-driving ground vehicle (SDV) and the implementation of a multilayer costmap that enhances the vehicle's obstacle identification process by expanding its two-dimensional field of view, based on 2D LIDAR, to a three-dimensional perception system using an RGB-D camera. This approach lays the foundation for a robust vision-based navigation and obstacle detection system. A theoretical review is presented and implementation results are discussed for future work.

Computer Science - Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition - Abstract
The speed of response by search and rescue teams at sea is of vital importance, as survival may depend on it. Recent technological advancements have led to the development of more efficient systems for locating individuals involved in a maritime incident, such as the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) equipped with cameras and other integrated sensors. Over the past decade, several researchers have contributed to the development of automatic systems capable of detecting people using aerial images, particularly by leveraging the advantages of deep learning. In this article, we provide a comprehensive review of the existing literature on this topic. We analyze the methods proposed to date, including both traditional techniques and more advanced approaches based on machine learning and neural networks. Additionally, we take into account the use of synthetic data to cover a wider range of scenarios without the need to deploy a team to collect data, which is one of the major obstacles for these systems. Overall, this paper situates the reader in the field of detecting people at sea using aerial images by quickly identifying the most suitable methodology for each scenario, as well as providing an in-depth discussion and direction for future trends.

BACKGROUND: Multiplexed Assays of Variant Effects (MAVEs) can test all possible single variants in a gene of interest. The resulting saturation-style functional data may help resolve variant classification disparities between populations, especially for Variants of Uncertain Significance (VUS). METHODS: We analyzed clinical significance classifications in 213,663 individuals of European-like genetic ancestry versus 206,975 individuals of non-European-like genetic ancestry from All of Us and the Genome Aggregation Database. Then, we incorporated clinically calibrated MAVE data into the Clinical Genome Resources Variant Curation Expert Panel rules to automate VUS reclassification for BRCA1, TP53, and PTEN. RESULTS: Using two orthogonal statistical approaches, we show a higher prevalence (p ≤ 5.95e - 06) of VUS in individuals of non-European-like genetic ancestry across all medical specialties assessed in all three databases. Further, in the non-European-like genetic ancestry group, higher rates of Benign or Likely Benign and variants with no clinical designation (p ≤ 2.5e - 05) were found across many medical specialties, whereas Pathogenic or Likely Pathogenic assignments were increased in individuals of European-like genetic ancestry (p ≤ 2.5e - 05). Using MAVE data, we reclassified VUS in individuals of non-European-like genetic ancestry at a significantly higher rate in comparison to reclassified VUS from European-like genetic ancestry (p = 9.1e - 03) effectively compensating for the VUS disparity. Further, essential code analysis showed equitable impact of MAVE evidence codes but inequitable impact of allele frequency (p = 7.47e - 06) and computational predictor (p = 6.92e - 05) evidence codes for individuals of non-European-like genetic ancestry. CONCLUSIONS: Generation of saturation-style MAVE data should be a priority to reduce VUS disparities and produce equitable training data for future computational predictors.

In this work, after the introduction of the notion of spacetime of maximal proper acceleration and its associated fundamental geometric and kinematic properties, the Unruh temperature formula is generalized to the case of hyperbolic observers in spacetimes of maximal proper acceleration. Such a generalization implies the existence of a maximal value for the Unruh temperature. We discuss this result for an electrodynamic model of point charged particle in a spacetime of maximal proper acceleration. It is shown that according to this mathematical model, the maximal Unruh temperature must be of order $10^5\, K$ for current high acceleration gradient laser-plasma acceleration experiments., Comment: 20 pages

Astrophysics - Astrophysics of Galaxies - Abstract
The Arches cluster, one of the most massive clusters in the Milky Way, is located about 30 pc in projection from the central massive black hole. With its high mass, young age, and location in the Galaxy's most extreme star forming environment, the Arches is an extraordinary laboratory to study massive stars and clusters. Our objective is to improve our knowledge of the properties of massive stars and the Arches cluster through high angular resolution radio continuum studies. We observed the Arches cluster with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array in the C- and X-bands throughout 2016, 2018, and 2022. We used the A-configuration to achieve the highest possible angular resolution and cross-matched the detected point sources with stars detected in the infrared, using proper motion catalogues to ensure cluster membership. We report the most extensive radio point source catalogue of the cluster to date, with a total of 25 radio detections. We also created the deepest radio images of the cluster so far. Most of our stellar radio sources (12/18) show a positive spectral index, indicating that the dominant emission process is free-free thermal radiation, which probably originates from stellar winds. We found that radio variability is more frequent than what was inferred from previous observations, affecting up to 60% of the sources associated with bright stellar counterparts. We propose four of our detections (F6, F18, F19 and F26) as primary candidates for colliding-wind binaries based on their consistent flat-to-negative spectral index. We classify F7, F9, F12, F14, and F55 as secondary colliding wind binary candidates based on their high flux and/or spectral index variability, and X-ray counterparts. Thus, we infer a 61% multiplicity fraction for the Arches cluster radio-stars when combining our findings with recent infrared radial velocity studies., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A (21st November 2024)

Computer Science - Machine Learning - Abstract
Access to real clinical data is often restricted due to privacy obligations, creating significant barriers for healthcare research. Synthetic datasets provide a promising solution, enabling secure data sharing and model development. However, most existing approaches focus on data realism rather than utility -- ensuring that models trained on synthetic data yield clinically meaningful insights comparable to those trained on real data. In this paper, we present Masked Clinical Modelling (MCM), a framework inspired by masked language modelling, designed for both data synthesis and conditional data augmentation. We evaluate this prototype on the WHAS500 dataset using Cox Proportional Hazards models, focusing on the preservation of hazard ratios as key clinical metrics. Our results show that data generated using the MCM framework improves both discrimination and calibration in survival analysis, outperforming existing methods. MCM demonstrates strong potential to support survival data analysis and broader healthcare applications., Comment: Re-archived due to incorrect ORCiD. Last edited: 2024-10-23

Computer Science - Machine Learning - Abstract
Access to real clinical data is heavily restricted by privacy regulations, hindering both healthcare research and education. These constraints slow progress in developing new treatments and data-driven healthcare solutions, while also limiting students' access to real-world datasets, leaving them without essential practical skills. High-utility synthetic datasets are therefore critical for advancing research and providing meaningful training material. However, current generative models -- such as Variational Autoencoders (VAEs) and Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) -- produce surface-level realism at the expense of healthcare utility, blending distinct patient profiles and producing synthetic data of limited practical relevance. To overcome these limitations, we introduce CK4Gen (Cox Knowledge for Generation), a novel framework that leverages knowledge distillation from Cox Proportional Hazards (CoxPH) models to create synthetic survival datasets that preserve key clinical characteristics, including hazard ratios and survival curves. CK4Gen avoids the interpolation issues seen in VAEs and GANs by maintaining distinct patient risk profiles, ensuring realistic and reliable outputs for research and educational use. Validated across four benchmark datasets -- GBSG2, ACTG320, WHAS500, and FLChain -- CK4Gen outperforms competing techniques by better aligning real and synthetic data, enhancing survival model performance in both discrimination and calibration via data augmentation. As CK4Gen is scalable across clinical conditions, and with code to be made publicly available, future researchers can apply it to their own datasets to generate synthetic versions suitable for open sharing.

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
We present the results of a search for gravitational-wave transients associated with core-collapse supernova SN 2023ixf, which was observed in the galaxy Messier 101 via optical emission on 2023 May 19th, during the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA 15th Engineering Run. We define a five-day on-source window during which an accompanying gravitational-wave signal may have occurred. No gravitational waves have been identified in data when at least two gravitational-wave observatories were operating, which covered $\sim 14\%$ of this five-day window. We report the search detection efficiency for various possible gravitational-wave emission models. Considering the distance to M101 (6.7 Mpc), we derive constraints on the gravitational-wave emission mechanism of core-collapse supernovae across a broad frequency spectrum, ranging from 50 Hz to 2 kHz where we assume the GW emission occurred when coincident data are available in the on-source window. Considering an ellipsoid model for a rotating proto-neutron star, our search is sensitive to gravitational-wave energy $1 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2$ and luminosity $4 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2/\text{s}$ for a source emitting at 50 Hz. These constraints are around an order of magnitude more stringent than those obtained so far with gravitational-wave data. The constraint on the ellipticity of the proto-neutron star that is formed is as low as $1.04$, at frequencies above $1200$ Hz, surpassing results from SN 2019ejj., Comment: Main paper: 6 pages, 4 figures and 1 table. Imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) are used to observe very high-energy photons from the ground. Gamma rays are indirectly detected through the Cherenkov light emitted by the air showers they induce. The new generation of experiments, in particular the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO), sets ambitious goals for discoveries of new gamma-ray sources and precise measurements of the already discovered ones. To achieve these goals, both hardware and data analysis must employ cutting-edge techniques. This also applies to the LST-1, the first IACT built for the CTAO, which is currently taking data on the Canary island of La Palma. This paper introduces a new event reconstruction technique for IACT data, aiming to improve the image reconstruction quality and the discrimination between the signal and the background from misidentified hadrons and electrons. The technique models the development of the extensive air shower signal, recorded as a waveform per pixel, seen by CTAO telescopes' cameras. Model parameters are subsequently passed to random forest regressors and classifiers to extract information on the primary particle. The new reconstruction was applied to simulated data and to data from observations of the Crab Nebula performed by the LST-1. The event reconstruction method presented here shows promising performance improvements. The angular and energy resolution, and the sensitivity, are improved by 10 to 20% over most of the energy range. At low energy, improvements reach up to 22%, 47%, and 50%, respectively. A future extension of the method to stereoscopic analysis for telescope arrays will be the next important step., Comment: Accepted in A&A

BL Lac objects are a class of jetted active galactic nuclei that do not exhibit or have weak emission lines in their optical spectra. Recently, the first $\gamma$-ray emitting BL Lac beyond $z=3$, 4FGL J1219.0 +3653 (hereafter J1219), was identified, i.e., within the first two billion years of the age of the universe. Here we report the results obtained from a detailed broadband study of this peculiar source by analyzing the new $\sim$58 ksec XMM-Newton and archival observations and reproducing the multiwavelength spectral energy distribution with the conventional one-zone leptonic radiative model. The XMM-Newton~data revealed that J1219 is a faint X-ray emitter ($F_{\rm 0.3-10~keV}=8.39^{+4.11}_{-2.40}\times10^{-15}$ erg/cm2/s) and exhibits a soft spectrum (0.3$-$10 keV photon index$=2.28^{+0.58}_{-0.48}$). By comparing the broadband physical properties of J1219 with $z>3$ $\gamma$-ray detected flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs), we have found that it has a relatively low jet power and, similar to FSRQs, the jet power is larger than the accretion disk luminosity. We conclude that deeper multiwavelength observations will be needed to fully explore the physical properties of this unique high-redshift BL Lac object., Comment: JHEAP, in press

Event-based visual odometry is a specific branch of visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) techniques, which aims at solving tracking and mapping subproblems (typically in parallel), by exploiting the special working principles of neuromorphic (i.e., event-based) cameras. Due to the motion-dependent nature of event data, explicit data association (i.e., feature matching) under large-baseline view-point changes is difficult to establish, making direct methods a more rational choice. However, state-of-the-art direct methods are limited by the high computational complexity of the mapping sub-problem and the degeneracy of camera pose tracking in certain degrees of freedom (DoF) in rotation. In this paper, we tackle these issues by building an event-based stereo visual-inertial odometry system on top of a direct pipeline. Specifically, to speed up the mapping operation, we propose an efficient strategy for sampling contour points according to the local dynamics of events. The mapping performance is also improved in terms of structure completeness and local smoothness by merging the temporal stereo and static stereo results. To circumvent the degeneracy of camera pose tracking in recovering the pitch and yaw components of general 6-DoF motion, we introduce IMU measurements as motion priors via pre-integration. To this end, a compact back-end is proposed for continuously updating the IMU bias and predicting the linear velocity, enabling an accurate motion prediction for camera pose tracking. The resulting system scales well with modern high-resolution event cameras and leads to better global positioning accuracy in large-scale outdoor environments. Extensive evaluations on five publicly available datasets featuring different resolutions and scenarios justify the superior performance of the proposed system against five state-of-the-art methods.

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
The magnetar SGR 1935+2154 is the only known Galactic source of fast radio bursts (FRBs). FRBs from SGR 1935+2154 were first detected by CHIME/FRB and STARE2 in 2020 April, after the conclusion of the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA Collaborations' O3 observing run. Here we analyze four periods of gravitational wave (GW) data from the GEO600 detector coincident with four periods of FRB activity detected by CHIME/FRB, as well as X-ray glitches and X-ray bursts detected by NICER and NuSTAR close to the time of one of the FRBs. We do not detect any significant GW emission from any of the events. Instead, using a short-duration GW search (for bursts $\leq$ 1 s) we derive 50\% (90\%) upper limits of $10^{48}$ ($10^{49}$) erg for GWs at 300 Hz and $10^{49}$ ($10^{50}$) erg at 2 kHz, and constrain the GW-to-radio energy ratio to $\leq 10^{14} - 10^{16}$. We also derive upper limits from a long-duration search for bursts with durations between 1 and 10 s. These represent the strictest upper limits on concurrent GW emission from FRBs., Comment: 15 pages of text including references, 4 figures, 5 tables

The Calar Alto Void Integral-field Treasury surveY (CAVITY) is a legacy project aimed at characterising the population of galaxies inhabiting voids, which are the most under-dense regions of the cosmic web, located in the Local Universe. This paper describes the first public data release (DR1) of CAVITY, comprising science-grade optical data cubes for the initial 100 out of a total of $\sim$300 galaxies in the Local Universe ($0.005 < z < 0.050$). These data were acquired using the integral-field spectrograph PMAS/PPak mounted on the 3.5m telescope at the Calar Alto observatory. The DR1 galaxy sample encompasses diverse characteristics in the color-magnitude space, morphological type, stellar mass, and gas ionisation conditions, providing a rich resource for addressing key questions in galaxy evolution through spatially resolved spectroscopy. The galaxies in this study were observed with the low-resolution V500 set-up, spanning the wavelength range 3745-7500 \AA, with a spectral resolution of 6.0 \AA\ (FWHM). Here, we describe the data reduction and characteristics and data structure of the CAVITY datasets essential for their scientific utilisation, highlighting such concerns as vignetting effects, as well as the identification of bad pixels and management of spatially correlated noise. We also provide instructions for accessing the CAVITY datasets and associated ancillary data through the project's dedicated database., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, 5 tables. Event cameras are novel bio-inspired vision sensors that measure pixel-wise brightness changes asynchronously instead of images at a given frame rate. They offer promising advantages, namely a high dynamic range, low latency, and minimal motion blur. Modern computer vision algorithms often rely on artificial neural network approaches, which require image-like representations of the data and cannot fully exploit the characteristics of event data. We propose approaches to action recognition based on the Fourier Transform. The approaches are intended to recognize oscillating motion patterns commonly present in nature. In particular, we apply our approaches to a recent dataset of breeding penguins annotated for "ecstatic display", a behavior where the observed penguins flap their wings at a certain frequency. We find that our approaches are both simple and effective, producing slightly lower results than a deep neural network (DNN) while relying just on a tiny fraction of the parameters compared to the DNN (five orders of magnitude fewer parameters). They work well despite the uncontrolled, diverse data present in the dataset. We hope this work opens a new perspective on event-based processing and action recognition., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, 7 tables

Chemical functionalization of carbon nanodots (CNDs) offers a valuable opportunity to tailor multifunctionality in these nanocarbons, by engineering the composition of their molecular surface. Therefore, it is important to elucidate the type and amount of CNDs functionalization to be able to design their properties accurately. CNDs are often functionalized through amide coupling without validating the degree of functionalization. As a measure of functionalization, the amounts of primary amines via Kaiser test (KT) or imine reactions of the bare CNDs is often considered. However, this may lead to overestimating the degree of functionalization obtained by the pure amide coupling due to different reaction mechanisms and involved intermediates. Herein, four different CNDs prepared by microwave-assisted synthesis from arginine or citric acid with varying amounts of ethylenediamine are presented. We resorted to a combination of physicochemical methods to provide elemental, structural, and optical information. By that, we developed a method to quantify the degree of functionalization by amide coupling and show that the functionalization is lower than one would expect. Comparing experimental optical features of the CNDs with different computed model systems further allows us to provide a more advanced vision of structure-property relationships in these still elusive nanocarbons.

The solar wind, a stream of charged particles originating from the Sun and transcending interplanetary space, poses risks to technology and astronauts. In this work, we develop a prediction model to forecast the solar wind speed at the Earth. We focuse on high-speed streams (HSSs) and their solar source regions, coronal holes. As input, we use the coronal hole area, extracted from solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) images and mapped on a fixed grid, as well as the solar wind speed 27 days before. We use a polynomial regression model and a distribution transformation to predict the solar wind speed with a lead time of four days. Our forecast achieves a root mean square error (RMSE) of 68.1 km/s for the solar wind speed prediction and an RMSE of 76.8 km/s for the HSS peak velocity prediction for 2010 to 2019. We also demonstrate the applicability of our model to the current solar cycle 25 in an operational setting, resulting in an RMSE of 80.3 km/s and an HSS peak velocity RMSE of 92.2 km/s. The study shows that a small number of physical features explains most of the solar wind variation, and that focusing on these features with simple machine learning algorithms even outperforms current approaches based on deep neural networks and MHD simulations. In addition, we explain why the typically used loss function, the mean squared error, systematically underestimates the HSS peak velocities, aggravates operational space weather forecasts, and how a distribution transformation can resolve this issue.

In this paper, we present results on the energy decay of the BBM KP equations (I and II) posed on R2 with localized damping. This model offers an alternative to the KP equations, analogous to how the regularized long-wave equation relates to the classical Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equation. We show that the energy associated with the Cauchy problem decays exponentially when a localized dissipative mechanism is present in a subdomain. Finally, we validate the theoretical results on the exponential stabilization of solutions to the BBM KP equations with damping through numerical experiments using a spectral finite difference scheme.

Computer Science - Computation and Language - Abstract
Direct speech-to-text translation systems encounter an important drawback in data scarcity. A common solution consists on pretraining the encoder on automatic speech recognition, hence losing efficiency in the training process. In this study, we compare the training dynamics of a system using a pretrained encoder, the conventional approach, and one trained from scratch. We observe that, throughout the training, the randomly initialized model struggles to incorporate information from the speech inputs for its predictions. Hence, we hypothesize that this issue stems from the difficulty of effectively training an encoder for direct speech translation. While a model trained from scratch needs to learn acoustic and semantic modeling simultaneously, a pretrained one can just focus on the latter. Based on these findings, we propose a subtle change in the decoder cross-attention to integrate source information from earlier steps in training. We show that with this change, the model trained from scratch can achieve comparable performance to the pretrained one, while reducing the training time., Comment: EMNLP 2024

Astrophysics - Astrophysics of Galaxies - Abstract
Observational studies showed that galaxy disks are already in place in the first few billion years of the universe. The early disks detected so far, with typical half-light radii of 3 kiloparsecs at stellar masses around 10^11 M_sun for redshift z~3, are significantly smaller than today's disks with similar masses, in agreement with expectations from current galaxy models. Here, we report observations of a giant disk at z=3.25, when the universe was only 2 billion years old, with a half-light radius of 9.6 kiloparsecs and stellar mass of 3.7^+2.6_-2.2x10^11 M_sun. This galaxy is larger than any other kinematically-confirmed disks at similar epochs and surprisingly similar to today's largest disks regarding size and mass. JWST imaging and spectroscopy reveal its spiral morphology and a rotational velocity consistent with local Tully-Fisher relation. Multi-wavelength observations show that it lies in an exceptionally dense environment, where the galaxy number density is over ten times higher than the cosmic average and mergers are frequent. The discovery of such a giant disk suggests the presence of favorable physical conditions for large-disk formation in dense environments in the early universe, which may include efficient accretion of gas carrying coherent angular momentum and non-destructive mergers between exceptionally gas-rich progenitor galaxies., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures; submitted

Stereopsis has widespread appeal in robotics as it is the predominant way by which living beings perceive depth to navigate our 3D world. Event cameras are novel bio-inspired sensors that detect per-pixel brightness changes asynchronously, with very high temporal resolution and high dynamic range, enabling machine perception in high-speed motion and broad illumination conditions. The high temporal precision also benefits stereo matching, making disparity (depth) estimation a popular research area for event cameras ever since its inception. Over the last 30 years, the field has evolved rapidly, from low-latency, low-power circuit design to current deep learning (DL) approaches driven by the computer vision community. The bibliography is vast and difficult to navigate for non-experts due its highly interdisciplinary nature. Past surveys have addressed distinct aspects of this topic, in the context of applications, or focusing only on a specific class of techniques, but have overlooked stereo datasets. This survey provides a comprehensive overview, covering both instantaneous stereo and long-term methods suitable for simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), along with theoretical and empirical comparisons. It is the first to extensively review DL methods as well as stereo datasets, even providing practical suggestions for creating new benchmarks to advance the field. The main advantages and challenges faced by event-based stereo depth estimation are also discussed. Despite significant progress, challenges remain in achieving optimal performance in not only accuracy but also efficiency, a cornerstone of event-based computing. We identify several gaps and propose future research directions. We hope this survey inspires future research in this area, by serving as an accessible entry point for newcomers, as well as a practical guide for seasoned researchers in the community., Comment: 28 pages, 20 figures, 7 tables

This paper represents a new perspective in understanding the controllability of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation on unbounded domains. By studying the equation on both the right and left half-line with a single control input, we show that a class of solutions exists for which the KdV equation is exactly controllable. This is achieved by introducing a new concept known as \textit{operational controllability}, which provides key insights for establishing exact controllability results for the KdV equation. This approach allows explicitly characterizing both the control input and the controllable solutions. Furthermore, this concept holds significant potential for application to a wide range of nonlinear dispersive equations on the half-line and in bounded intervals., Comment: 37 pages. Audio token modeling has become a powerful framework for speech synthesis, with two-stage approaches employing semantic tokens remaining prevalent. In this paper, we aim to simplify this process by introducing a semantic knowledge distillation method that enables high-quality speech generation in a single stage. Our proposed model improves speech quality, intelligibility, and speaker similarity compared to a single-stage baseline. Although two-stage systems still lead in intelligibility, our model significantly narrows the gap while delivering comparable speech quality. These findings showcase the potential of single-stage models to achieve efficient, high-quality TTS with a more compact and streamlined architecture., Comment: Demo page: see https://narsistts.github.io

We tackle the problem of mosaicing bundle adjustment (i.e., simultaneous refinement of camera orientations and scene map) for a purely rotating event camera. We formulate the problem as a regularized non-linear least squares optimization. The objective function is defined using the linearized event generation model in the camera orientations and the panoramic gradient map of the scene. We show that this BA optimization has an exploitable block-diagonal sparsity structure, so that the problem can be solved efficiently. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to leverage such sparsity to speed up the optimization in the context of event-based cameras, without the need to convert events into image-like representations. We evaluate our method, called EMBA, on both synthetic and real-world datasets to show its effectiveness (50% photometric error decrease), yielding results of unprecedented quality. In addition, we demonstrate EMBA using high spatial resolution event cameras, yielding delicate panoramas in the wild, even without an initial map. Accurately estimating forest biomass is crucial for global carbon cycle modelling and climate change mitigation. Tree height, a key factor in biomass calculations, can be measured using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology. This study applies machine learning to extract forest height data from two SAR products: Single Look Complex (SLC) images and tomographic cubes, in preparation for the ESA Biomass Satellite mission. We use the TomoSense dataset, containing SAR and LiDAR data from Germany's Eifel National Park, to develop and evaluate height estimation models. Our approach includes classical methods, deep learning with a 3D U-Net, and Bayesian-optimized techniques. By testing various SAR frequencies and polarimetries, we establish a baseline for future height and biomass modelling. Best-performing models predict forest height to be within 2.82m mean absolute error for canopies around 30m, advancing our ability to measure global carbon stocks and support climate action.

Enabled by large annotated datasets, tracking and segmentation of objects in videos has made remarkable progress in recent years. Despite these advancements, algorithms still struggle under degraded conditions and during fast movements. Event cameras are novel sensors with high temporal resolution and high dynamic range that offer promising advantages to address these challenges. However, annotated data for developing learning-based mask-level tracking algorithms with events is not available. To this end, we introduce: ($i$) a new task termed \emph{space-time instance segmentation}, similar to video instance segmentation, whose goal is to segment instances throughout the entire duration of the sensor input (here, the input are quasi-continuous events and optionally aligned frames); and ($ii$) \emph{\dname}, a dataset for the new task, containing aligned grayscale frames and events. It includes annotated ground-truth labels (pixel-level instance segmentation masks) of a group of up to seven freely moving and interacting mice. We also provide two reference methods, which show that leveraging event data can consistently improve tracking performance, especially when used in combination with conventional cameras. The results highlight the potential of event-aided tracking in difficult scenarios. We hope our dataset opens the field of event-based video instance segmentation and enables the development of robust tracking algorithms for challenging conditions.\url{https://github.com/tub-rip/MouseSIS}, Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, ECCV Workshops

Nevertheless, it is generally accepted that classical mechanics emerges from quantum mechanics in the macroscopic limit. In this letter, we challenge this perspective and demonstrate that the behavior of a macroscopic system can retain all aspects of the quantum formalism, in a way that is robust against decoherence, particle losses and coarse-grained (imprecise) measurements. This departure from the expected classical description of macroscopic systems is not merely mathematical but also conceptual, as we show by the explicit violation of a Bell inequality and a Leggett-Garg inequality., Comment: 25 pages, 4 figures

Vehicular mobility underscores the need for collaborative misbehavior detection at the vehicular edge. However, locally trained misbehavior detection models are susceptible to adversarial attacks that aim to deliberately influence learning outcomes. In this paper, we introduce a deep reinforcement learning-based approach that employs transfer learning for collaborative misbehavior detection among roadside units (RSUs). In the presence of label-flipping and policy induction attacks, we perform selective knowledge transfer from trustworthy source RSUs to foster relevant expertise in misbehavior detection and avoid negative knowledge sharing from adversary-influenced RSUs. The performance of our proposed scheme is demonstrated with evaluations over a diverse set of misbehavior detection scenarios using an open-source dataset. Experimental results show that our approach significantly reduces the training time at the target RSU and achieves superior detection performance compared to the baseline scheme with tabula rasa learning. Enhanced robustness and generalizability can also be attained, by effectively detecting previously unseen and partially observable misbehavior attacks.

The critical length phenomenon of the Korteweg-de Vries equation is well known, however, in higher dimensions, it is unknown. This work explores this property in the context of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation, a two-dimensional generalization of the Korteweg-de Vries equation. Specifically, we demonstrate observability inequalities for this equation, which allow us to deduce the exact boundary controllability and boundary exponential stabilization of the linear system, provided the spatial domain length avoids certain specific values, which is a direct consequence of the Paley-Wiener theorem. To the best of our knowledge, our work introduces new results by identifying a set of critical lengths for the two-dimensional Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation., Comment: Comments are welcome. 20 pages

We study the ground-state phase diagram of an unfrustrated antiferromagnetic Ising chain with longitudinal and transverse fields in the full range of interactions: from all-to-all to nearest-neighbors. First, we solve the model analytically in the strong long-range regime, confirming in the process that a mean-field treatment is exact for this model. We compute the order parameter and the correlations and show that the model exhibits a tricritical point where the phase transition changes from first to second order. This is in contrast with the nearest-neighbor limit where the phase transition is known to be second order. To understand how the order of the phase transition changes from one limit to the other, we tackle the analytically-intractable interaction ranges numerically, using a variational quantum Monte Carlo method with a neural-network-based ansatz, the visual transformer. We show how the first-order phase transition shrinks with decreasing interaction range and establish approximate boundaries in the interaction range for which the first-order phase transition is present. Finally, we establish that the key ingredient to stabilize a first-order phase transition and a tricritical point is the presence of ferromagnetic interactions between spins of the same sublattice on top of antiferromagnetic interactions between spins of different sublattices. Tunable-range unfrustrated antiferromagnetic interactions are just one way to implement such staggered interactions., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

Vision-based perception systems are typically exposed to large orientation changes in different robot applications. In such conditions, their performance might be compromised due to the inherent complexity of processing data captured under challenging motion. Integration of mechanical stabilizers to compensate for the camera rotation is not always possible due to the robot payload constraints. This paper presents a processing-based stabilization approach to compensate the camera's rotational motion both on events and on frames (i.e., images). Assuming that the camera's attitude is available, we evaluate the benefits of stabilization in two perception applications: feature tracking and estimating the translation component of the camera's ego-motion. The validation is performed using synthetic data and sequences from well-known event-based vision datasets. The experiments unveil that stabilization can improve feature tracking and camera ego-motion estimation accuracy in 27.37% and 34.82%, respectively. Concurrently, stabilization can reduce the processing time of computing the camera's linear velocity by at least 25%. Visual Odometry (VO) and SLAM are fundamental components for spatial perception in mobile robots. Despite enormous progress in the field, current VO/SLAM systems are limited by their sensors' capability. Event cameras are novel visual sensors that offer advantages to overcome the limitations of standard cameras, enabling robots to expand their operating range to challenging scenarios, such as high-speed motion and high dynamic range illumination. We propose a novel event-based stereo VO system by combining two ideas: a correspondence-free mapping module that estimates depth by maximizing ray density fusion and a tracking module that estimates camera poses by maximizing edge-map alignment. We evaluate the system comprehensively on five real-world datasets, spanning a variety of camera types (manufacturers and spatial resolutions) and scenarios (driving, flying drone, hand-held, egocentric, etc). The quantitative and qualitative results demonstrate that our method outperforms the state of the art in majority of the test sequences by a margin, e.g., trajectory error reduction of 45% on RPG dataset, 61% on DSEC dataset, and 21% on TUM-VIE dataset. To benefit the community and foster research on event-based perception systems, we release the source code and results: https://github.com/tub-rip/ES-PTAM, Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables, https://github.com/tub-rip/ES-PTAM

This paper introduces a novel anomaly detection framework that combines the robust statistical principles of density-estimation-based anomaly detection methods with the representation-learning capabilities of deep learning models. The method originated from this framework is presented in two different versions: a shallow approach employing a density-estimation model based on adaptive Fourier features and density matrices, and a deep approach that integrates an autoencoder to learn a low-dimensional representation of the data. By estimating the density of new samples, both methods are able to find normality scores. The methods can be seamlessly integrated into an end-to-end architecture and optimized using gradient-based optimization techniques. To evaluate their performance, extensive experiments were conducted on various benchmark datasets. The results demonstrate that both versions of the method can achieve comparable or superior performance when compared to other state-of-the-art methods. Notably, the shallow approach performs better on datasets with fewer dimensions, while the autoencoder-based approach shows improved performance on datasets with higher dimensions., Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2211.08525

- Abstract
Studies on digital rights in education have both gained attention and provided a framework for research, policy and practice in educational research within the field of educational technology. The potential benefits we appreciate in Internet use are inseparable from the maximum risks involved. Faced with this responsibility, individuals demand that their rights and freedoms be guaranteed in the digital environment according to their various roles as students, teachers, families or staff. This scoping review selects and analyses 54 theoretical and empirical studies from the last decade (2013-2023), identifying the main topics investigated as privacy protection in online environments, right to digital security or cybersecurity, and right to digital education. The review underscores the need to guide efforts towards digital education for citizens because the legal regulation of rights and responsibilities is necessary but insufficient. The paper also makes arguments about acceptance, limitations and implications for teacher training.
