This paper considers the topic of student wellbeing using the lens of a different type of support mechanism -- 'dog borrowing' -- which builds on prior research about emotion work and human-animal interactions but in the context of student transitions and pastoral care in higher education. This novel study was about the experiences of students settling into their university life and how, through a facilitated opportunity for students to connect to a dog and community partners, universities can meet mental health standards for wellbeing support. The findings outlined in this paper provide new insight into; how the university ethos and environment can be viewed as more personalised and emotionally supportive, how different kinds of relationships can support emotion state regulation conducive to wellbeing and effective learning and the ways that a human-animal bond can enhance connection with the community and provide social support for university students who have moved away from home.

There is a lack of research examining how students' emotion regulation is linked to their well-being at school. To address this gap in the current literature, we examined reciprocal relations between two important emotion regulation strategies (cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression) and school-related well-being over 12 months across 2 school years. We collected data from 2,365 secondary and upper secondary students in England (aged 11-19 years) across three waves. Juxtaposing between-persons and within-person perspectives, we used a tripartite (three-part) latent cross-lagged panel model (CLPM), and a tripartite latent random intercept-cross-lagged panel model (RI-CLPM) to examine the directional ordering of the two strategies and well-being over time. Both the CLPM and RI-CLPM showed that reappraisal and school-related well-being were reciprocally related. Reappraisal positively predicted school-related well-being, and school-related well-being positively predicted reappraisal. Reappraisal also negatively predicted subsequent suppression, but not vice versa. Suppression and school-related well-being were not linked. Findings inform the design of intervention research in schools and colleges by highlighting the importance of cognitive reappraisal in the school-related well-being of adolescents.

ABSTRACT Sewage contamination of environmental waters is increasingly assessed by measuring DNA from sewage-associated microorganisms in microbial source tracking (MST) approaches. However, DNA can persist through wastewater treatment and reach surface waters when treated sewage/recycled water is discharged, which may falsely indicate pollution from untreated sewage. Recycled water discharged from an advanced wastewater treatment (AWT) facility into a Florida stream elevated the sewage-associated HF183 marker 1,000-fold, with a minimal increase in cultured Escherichia coli. The persistence of sewage-associated microorganisms was compared by qPCR in untreated sewage and recycled water from conventional wastewater treatment (CWT) and AWT facilities. E. coli (EC23S857) and sewage-associated markers HF183, H8, and viral crAssphage CPQ_056 were always detected in untreated sewage (6.5–8.7 log10 GC/100 mL). Multivariate analysis found a significantly greater reduction of microbial variables via AWT vs CWT. Bacterial markers decayed ~4–5 log10 through CWT, but CPQ_056 was ~100-fold more persistent. In AWT facilities, the log10 reduction of all variables was ~5. In recycled water, bacterial marker concentrations were significantly correlated (P ≤ 0.0136; tau ≥ 0.44); however, CPQ_056 was not correlated with any marker, suggesting varying drivers of decay. Concentrations of cultured E. coli carrying the H8 marker (EcH8) in untreated sewage were 5.24–6.02 log10 CFU/100 mL, while no E. coli was isolated from recycled water. HF183 and culturable EcH8 were also correlated in contaminated surface waters (odds ratio β1 = 1.701). Culturable EcH8 has a strong potential to differentiate positive MST marker signals arising from treated (e.g., recycled water) and untreated sewage discharged into environmental waters.IMPORTANCEGenes in sewage-associated microorganisms are widely accepted indicators of sewage pollution in environmental waters. However, DNA persists through wastewater treatment and can reach surface waters when recycled water is discharged, potentially causing false-positive indications of sewage contamination. Previous studies have found that bacterial and viral sewage-associated genes persist through wastewater treatment; however, these studies did not compare different facilities or identify a solution to distinguish sewage from recycled water. In this study, we demonstrated the persistence of bacterial marker genes and the greater persistence of a viral marker gene (CPQ_056 of crAssphage) through varying wastewater treatment facilities. We also aim to provide a tool to confirm sewage contamination in surface waters with recycled water inputs. This work showed that the level of wastewater treatment affects the removal of microorganisms, particularly viruses, and expands our ability to identify sewage in surface waters.

The EZ-FET is a device with simplified architecture and processing that enables fast electrical characterization of semiconductor films on insulators (SOI) with only two lithography levels and using regular process steps. For low temperature SOI substrates characterization, the EZ-FET must be processed at a low temperature, including the junctions formation, i.e., the dopant activation process. Two EZ-FET dopant activation approaches using nanosecond laser annealing at low thermal budget are presented in this work. The first is the classical process of partial source and drain amorphization followed by their recrystallization. The second is a simplified process consisting of full source and drain amorphization followed by recrystallization. Both approaches are evaluated through the analysis of the electrical behaviors of the resulting structures.

Estuarine water quality is declining worldwide due to increased tourism, coastal development, and a changing climate. Although well-established methods are in place to monitor water quality, municipalities struggle to use the data to prioritize infrastructure for monitoring and repair and to determine sources of contamination when they occur. The objective of this study was to assess water quality and prioritize sources of contamination within Town Creek Estuary (TCE), Beaufort, North Carolina, by combining culture, molecular, and geographic information systems (GIS) data into a novel contamination source ranking system. Water samples were collected from TCE at ten locations on eight sampling dates in Fall 2021 (n = 80). Microbiological water quality was assessed using US Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) approved culture-based methods for fecal indicator bacteria (FIB), including analysis of total coliforms (TC), Escherichia coli (EC), and Enterococcus spp. (ENT). The quantitative microbial source tracking (qMST) human-associated fecal marker, HF183, was quantified using droplet digital PCR (ddPCR). This information was combined with environmental data and GIS information detailing proximal sewer, septic, and stormwater infrastructure to determine potential sources of fecal contamination in the estuary. Results indicated FIB concentrations were significantly and positively correlated with precipitation and increased throughout the estuary following rainfall events (p < 0.01). Sampling sites with FIB concentrations above the U.S. EPA threshold also had the highest percentages of aged, less durable piping materials. Using a novel ranking system combining concentrations of FIB, HF183, and sewer infrastructure data at each site, we found that the two sites nearest the most aged sewage infrastructure and stormwater outflows were found to have the highest levels of measurable fecal contamination. This case study supports the inclusion of both traditional water quality measurements and local infrastructure data to support the current need for municipalities to identify, prioritize, and remediate failing infrastructure.

El objetivo de este trabajo fue identificar y caracterizar mediante un enfoque multivariado fuentes de variancia para los caracteres productivos a la faena en pollos broiler machos y hembras criados bajo dos densidades de alojamiento. El trabajo se llevó a cabo en una granja comercial del noreste de Santa Fe, Argentina. Se alojaron 54.000 pollos Cobb500® de un día de edad en lotes mixtos, en dos galpones oscurecidos de ventilación forzada. Se ensayaron dos densidades de alojamiento: densidad estándar (14 pollos/m2 = 29.000 aves) habitualmente utilizada en la granja y densidad reducida (12 pollos/m2 = 25. 000 aves). Las aves se faenaron a los 41 días y se evaluó el peso limpio (PL), el rendimiento de la canal (RC), de pata-muslo (RPM) y de pechuga (RP) y la proporción de grasa (PG). Los datos de las cinco variables se analizaron en forma conjunta, para cada sexo por separado, con la técnica multivariada de componentes principales. Las dos primeras componentes principales (CP1 y CP2) explicaron el 79 % de la variancia total de los datos correspondientes a los machos y el 81 % de los datos de las hembras. CP1 se asoció principalmente con el peso limpio y el rendimiento de la canal y CP2 con el rendimiento de pechuga y pata-muslo y la proporción de grasa abdominal. Los pollos alojados con mayor densidad presentaron mayor rendimiento de la canal, debido, en parte, a la mayor proporción de grasa acumulada en el abdomen, como consecuencia de su crecimiento a un peso final más bajo lo que implica diferencias en el balance energético.

Introduction/Aims: Cerebellar ataxia, neuropathy, vestibular areflexia syndrome (CANVAS) is caused by RFC1 expansions. Sensory neuronopathy, polyneuropathy, and involvement of motor, autonomic, and cranial nerves have all been described with RFC1 expansions. We aimed to describe the electrodiagnostic features of patients with RFC1 expansions through multimodal electrophysiological investigations. Methods: Thirty‐five patients, with a median age of 70 years, and pathologic biallelic repeat expansions in the RFC1 gene, were tested for motor and sensory nerve conduction, flexor carpi radialis (FCR) and soleus H‐reflexes, blink reflex, electrochemical skin conductance, sympathetic skin response (SSR), and heart rate variability with deep breathing (HRV). Results: Only 16 patients (46%) exhibited the full clinical CANVAS spectrum. Distal motor amplitudes were normal in 30 patients and reduced in the legs of five patients. Distal sensory amplitudes were bilaterally reduced in a non‐length dependent manner in 30 patients. Conduction velocities were normal. Soleus H‐reflexes were abnormal in 19/20 patients of whom seven had preserved Achilles reflexes. FCR H‐reflexes were absent or decreased in amplitude in 13/14 patients. Blink reflex was abnormal in 4/19 patients: R1 latencies for two patients and R2 latencies for two others. Fourteen out of 31 patients (45%) had abnormal results in at least one autonomic nervous system test, either for ESC (12/31), SSR (5/14), or HRV (6/19). Discussion: Less than half of the patients with RFC1 expansions exhibited the full clinical CANVAS spectrum, but nearly all exhibited typical sensory neuronopathy and abnormal H‐reflexes. The calixarene‐templated synthesis of new cyclo(meta‐ polyphenylenes (CMPs) is described. These compounds are functionalized with added aromatic units, that are suitably oriented for oxidative aromatization to be envisioned. This could pave the way towards the synthesis of elongated segments of zigzag‐type single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
