Large trees are important to a wide variety of wildlife, including many species of conservation concern, such as the California spotted owl (Strix occidentalis occidentalis). Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) has been successfully utilized to identify the density of large-diameter trees, either by segmenting the LiDAR point cloud into individual trees, or by building regression models between variables extracted from the LiDAR point cloud and field data. Neither of these methods is easily accessible for most land managers due to the reliance on specialized software, and much available LiDAR data are being underutilized due to the steep learning curve required for advanced processing using these programs. This study derived a simple, yet effective method for estimating the density of large-stemmed trees from the LiDAR canopy height model, a standard raster product derived from the LiDAR point cloud that is often delivered with the LiDAR and is easy to process by personnel trained in geographic information systems (GIS). Ground plots needed to be large (1 ha) to build a robust model, but the spatial accuracy of plot center was less crucial to model accuracy. We also showed that predicted large tree density is positively linked to California spotted owl nest sites.

Background: Despite recent evidence demonstrating iron and folate supplementation reduces the risk of low birth weight and preterm births, synthesis of the evidence is not sufficient to understand their impacts in Africa. Method: MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Embase, Scopus, CHINAL, Web of Science, Cochrane databases, and Google Scholar were searched for the published and grey literature. Either iron-only, folate-only, or iron–folic acid (IFA) oral supplementation during pregnancy was the primary exposure/intervention. The focus of this review was low birth weight and preterm births in the African region. Qualitative synthesis, meta-analysis, and subgroup analysis were employed. Results: In the qualitative synthesis (n = 4), IFA supplementation showed a positive impact on reducing preterm birth. Additionally, the meta-analysis showed that IFA and iron-only supplementation reduced the odds of low birth weight by 63% (OR 0.37; 95% CI: 0.29, 0.48) and 68% (OR 0.32; 95% CI: 0.21 to 0.50), respectively. Conclusion: Both iron-only and IFA supplementation are effective in reducing the risk of low birth weight in Africa. There is also promising evidence suggesting a potential reduction in preterm births. Consequently, further research is needed, particularly targeting high-risk groups such as women residing in rural areas with limited support and low levels of literacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Asthma is a global health concern affecting millions of children and adolescents. This review focuses on the possible factors that are associated with the transition from preschool wheezing to childhood asthma and highlights the significance of early‐life environmental exposures during pregnancy and the first 6 months of life in shaping allergies and asthma. We observed a scarcity of studies investigating this subgroup, with most focusing on wheezing trajectories. We undertook a thorough investigation of diverse perinatal exposures that have the potential to impact this transition. These factors include maternal asthma, smoking during pregnancy, diet, prepregnancy weight, infant birthweight, gestational age, and breastfeeding. Although limited, studies do suggest that maternal asthma increases the likelihood of preschool wheeze in offspring that persists through childhood with potential asthma progression. Findings concerning other perinatal exposures remain inconsistent. Further research is needed to identify asthma progression risk factors and assess perinatal exposure effects. In the 'Our Town' project, 20 urban children designed and built an intervention in their neighborhood. The process involved extensive collaboration with the community at large and resulted in a park. This construction was developed in direct contrast to a more typical adult conception of a playground. Children's concerns in their design included issues of intergenerational interaction, safety, comfort and visual delight. The success of the project speaks to the depth of knowledge, and lack of political agenda, which may permit children to be designers and advocates for change in their neighborhoods. This article seeks to identify and address questions regarding the inclusion of children as effective and appropriate resources for input in design and advocacy for change in their built environment.

We have previously shown that serotonin type-3 (5-HT3) receptors mediate cholecystokinin (CCK)-induced satiation and that this effect is dependent on postoropharyngeal feedback. However, the independent contributions of gastric and intestinal feedback in 5-HT3 receptor mediation of suppression of food intake by CCK have not been determined. Using a sham-feeding preparation combined with intraduodenal sucrose infusion, we show that blockade of 5-HT3 receptors by ondansetron (1 mg/kg ip) had no effect on suppression of sham feeding by intraduodenal 15% sucrose infusion (4 ml/10 min), CCK (2 [micro]g/kg ip) administration, or the combination of the two treatments. In separate experiments consisting of either sham-feeding rats that received gastric distension with the use of a balloon or real-feeding rats whose stomachs were distended using gastric loads of saline after the occlusion of the pylorus, we tested the hypothesis that gastric feedback signals are necessary for activation of 5-HT3 receptors. Ondansetron significantly attenuated suppression of sham sucrose intake after a 10-ml gastric balloon distension (30.5 [+ or -] 2.2 vs. 20.2 [+ or -] 2.2 ml, respectively) and gastric distension combined with CCK (21.9 [+ or -] 1.4 vs. 12.0 [+ or -] 1.7 ml, respectively). When intestinal feedback was eliminated in a real-feeding paradigm by closing the pylorus using a cuff preparation, ondansetron attenuated suppression of sucrose intake produced by a 10-ml saline gastric load (6.8 [+ or -] 0.7 vs. 4.2 [+ or -] 0.4 ml, respectively). Finally, when CCK (1 [micro]g/kg) was administered in combination with a 5-ml saline gastric load in a real-feeding preparation, ondansetron significantly attenuated suppression of sucrose intake by CCK (9.0 [+ or -] 0.9 vs. 6.3 [+ or -] 0.5 ml, respectively), as well as the enhanced suppression of intake by CCK plus gastric load (6.9 [+ or -] 0.6 vs. 4.6 [+ or -] 0.5 ml, respectively). Sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption has been associated with visceral fat partitioning in adults; however, the underlying mechanisms in childhood remain unclear and warrant exploration. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the association between SSB consumption and body fat in children aged 9–13 years and the potential modifying effect of children's sex and serum cortisol levels. A sample of 2665 Greek schoolchildren participated in the 'Healthy Growth Study', and anthropometric, body composition, dietary intake and serum cortisol data were assessed. SSB consumption was defined as low (<1 serving/d), medium (1–2 servings/d) or high (>2 servings/d). We used linear regression models to assess the association between SSB consumption and measures of adiposity and to assess effect modification; models were stratified by sex and tertiles of morning serum cortisol. A significant positive association was observed between high SSB consumption and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) (β = 1·4, 95 % CI 0·4, 2·3, P = 0·01) but not BMI or BMI z-score. When stratified by sex, the association was observed in boys (β = 1·8, 95 % CI 0·3, 3·4, P = 0·02) but not in girls. When stratified by cortisol levels, SSB consumption was associated with VAT in children with cortisol levels in the lowest tertile (β = 2·8, 95 % CI 1·0, 4·6, P < 0·01). These results indicate that increased SSB consumption is associated with visceral adiposity in schoolchildren and this association may be modified by sex and morning serum cortisol. To prevent VAT accumulation and concomitant disease risk, dietary interventions should target SSB consumption during childhood. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
