Given a holomorphic vector bundle $E$ over a compact Riemann surface $M$, and an open set $D$ in $M$, we prove that the Bergman space of holomorphic sections of the restriction of $E$ to $D$ must either coincide with the space of global holomorphic sections of $E$, or be infinite dimensional. Abstract

We investigate the question of existence of plurisubharmonic defining functions for smoothly bounded, pseudoconvex domains in $\mathbb{C}^2$. In particular, we construct a family of simple counterexamples to the existence of plurisubharmonic smooth local defining functions. Moreover, we give general criteria equivalent to the existence of plurisubharmonic smooth defining functions on or near the boundary of the domain. Abstract

We set a framework for the study of Hardy spaces inherited by complements of analytic hypersurfaces in domains with a prior Hardy space structure. The inherited structure is a filtration, various aspects of which are studied in specific settings. For punctured planar domains, we prove a generalization of a famous rigidity lemma of Kerzman and Stein. A stabilization phenomenon is observed for egg domains. Finally, using proper holomorphic maps, we derive a filtration of Hardy spaces for certain power-generalized Hartogs triangles, although these domains fall outside the scope of the original framework., Comment: 31 pages; apart from some minor changes, the terminology 'variety-deleted domain' has been changed to 'hypersurface-deleted domain'. 19. Executive and attentional functioning interventions in preterm children: a systematic review.

Abstract

Objective This systematic review, performed in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines, seeks to summarize the interventions that have been developed in order to improve executive functioning and attention in children born prematurely. Methods The PICOS framework helped guide the structure and relevant terms selected for the study. Electronic systematic searches of the databases PubMed (NLM), Ovid Medline, Ovid All EBM Reviews, Ovid Embase, and Ovid PsycINFO were completed in March 2022. This review focuses on interventions that target attention and executive functioning in prematurely born children between birth and 12 years old, with outcome measures assessed between 3 and 12 years old, even if the age range in the study can exceed our own parameters. Data extraction included sample characteristics, country of recruitment, type of intervention, description of the intervention group and control group, outcome measures, and overall results. An assessment of the quality of methodology of studies was performed through an adaptation of the Downs and Black checklist for both randomized and nonrandomized studies in healthcare interventions. An assessment of the risk of bias was also presented using the Cochrane risk of bias tool for randomized trials 2.0. Results A total of 517 premature children received an intervention at some point between birth and early adolescence. Eleven different interventions were assessed in 17 studies, with rating of the quality of methodology and outcomes ranging from lower quality studies (44% quality rating) to robust studies (96% quality rating) in terms of reporting standards, external and internal validity, and power. Five of those studies focused on interventions administered in the neonatal intensive care unit or shortly postdischarge (e.g. the Mother–Infant Transaction Program and the Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program, documented in two articles each [11%] or the Infant Behavioral Assessment and Intervention Program assessed in one study [about 5%]), while 12 articles reported on interventions administered between the ages of 1.5–12 years old [mostly computerized cognitive training programs such as Cogmed (23%) and BrainGame Brian (17%)]. Of the 17 articles examined, 12 (70%) showed positive short-term outcomes postintervention and 3 (17%) demonstrated positive long-term results with small to large effect sizes (0.23–2.3). Among included studies, 50% showed an overall high risk of bias, 21.4% showed some concerns, and 28.6% were low risk of bias. Conclusions Due to the heterogeneity of the programs reviewed, the presented findings should be interpreted as descriptive results. A careful and individualized selection from the various available interventions should be made based on the target population (i.e. age at intervention administration and outcome testing) before implementing these program protocols in clinical settings. 32. Responding to terrorism : United States counterterrorism from 1968

Abstract

Following the attacks of September 11, 2001, President Bush had to construct a response that would reflect the anger felt around the world toward the perpetrators, and in equal measure appease the domestic need in the United States for retribution. Such a response would impact on successive administrations and generations alike. This research examines the policies pursued by the Bush administration in response to September 11, in the context of the policy choices of Presidential administrations of the past. It compiles a historical chronology of polices implemented in response to attacks against Untied States citizens or interests, from the birth of international terrorism in 1968. Current writing on the topic focuses predominantly on the 'war on terror 'and the implications for international relations and international law, among other considerations. The key writings on this specific topic, the history of counterterrorism, tend to come from a national security or political science approach, with only selected works using history to assess the present. In order to study this history, archival research was conducted at the National Security Archive in Washington, the National Archive and Records Administration at College Park, MD, and the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, California. Interviews were conducted with Professor Noam Chomsky, Professor Bruce Hoffinan and Professor James Goldgeier, in addition to the consultation of secondary source material. The conclusions reached demonstrate the importance of consulting history in formulating policy for national security threats of today. The lessons that can be taken from the responses of the administrations of Presidents Nixon, Carter, Reagan and Clinton, centre on the futile use of military action as the predominant policy when attempting to combat international terrorism. They reflect the need for a greater depth of understanding of the ideology that drives individuals to adopt terrorist tactics and the forces that conspire to promote such action. This need is heightened by the United State actions in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Abstract

Introduction: Pediatric frontal and temporal lobe epilepsies (FLE, TLE) have been associated with language impairments and structural and functional brain alterations. However, there is no clear consensus regarding the specific patterns of cerebral reorganization of language networks in these patients. The current study aims at characterizing the cerebral language networks in children with FLE or TLE, and the association between brain network characteristics and cognitive abilities. Methods: Twenty (20) children with FLE or TLE aged between 6 and 18 years and 29 age- and sex-matched healthy controls underwent a neuropsychological evaluation and a simultaneous functional near-infrared spectroscopy and electroencephalography (fNIRS-EEG) recording at rest and during a receptive language task. EEG was used to identify potential subclinical seizures in patients. We removed these time intervals from the fNIRS signal to investigate language brain networks and not epileptogenic networks. Functional connectivity matrices on fNIRS oxy-hemoglobin concentration changes were computed using cross-correlations between all channels. Results and discussion: Group comparisons of residual matrices (=individual task-based matrix minus individual resting-state matrix) revealed significantly reduced connectivity within the left and between hemispheres, increased connectivity within the right hemisphere and higher right hemispheric local efficiency for the epilepsy group compared to the control group. The epilepsy group had significantly lower cognitive performance in all domains compared to their healthy peers. Epilepsy patients' local network efficiency in the left hemisphere was negatively associated with the estimated IQ (p = 0.014), suggesting that brain reorganization in response to FLE and TLE does not allow for an optimal cognitive development. Abstract

Patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) requiring cardiac surgery in infancy are at high risk for neurodevelopmental impairments. Neonatal imaging studies have reported disruptions of brain functional organization before surgery. Yet, the extent to which functional network alterations are present after cardiac repair remains unexplored. This preliminary study aimed at investigating cortical functional connectivity in 4-month-old infants with repaired CHD, using resting-state functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). After fNIRS signal frequency decomposition, we compared values of magnitude-squared coherence as a measure of connectivity strength, between 21 infants with corrected CHD and 31 healthy controls. We identified a subset of connections with differences between groups at an uncorrected statistical level of p <.05 while controlling for sex and maternal socioeconomic status, with most of these connections showing reduced connectivity in infants with CHD. Although none of these differences reach statistical significance after FDR correction, likely due to the small sample size, moderate to large effect sizes were found for group-differences. If replicated, these results would therefore suggest preliminary evidence that alterations of brain functional connectivity are present in the months after cardiac surgery. Additional studies involving larger sample size are needed to replicate our data, and comparisons between pre- and postoperative findings would allow to further delineate alterations of functional brain connectivity in this population.
