Abstract

This study aimed to compare the effects of an accentuated eccentric training programme on physical performance between men and women. Distributed in two groups by gender, 21 male and 21 female athletes performed four sets of seven repetitions of the half-squat exercise twice per week for 6 weeks. Both groups lifted the same absolute load using a rotary inertial device. To accentuate the eccentric action, the eccentric load was twice as heavy as the concentric load. Vertical jump, sprint, and change of direction (COD) performances were measured pre- and post-intervention. To measure strength gains, vertical ground reaction forces were measured for each repetition of the entire training programme. Vertical jump improved post-intervention (MG: 33.88 ± 4.94 to 35.41 ± 4.86; FG: 20.60 ± 4.62 to 22.12 ± 4.32; p < 0.001; η2p = 0.42), while sprint (MG: 3.08 ± 0.11 to 3.07 ± 0.13; FG: 3.66 ± 0.23 to 3.64 ± 0.23) and COD (MG: 7.77 ± 0.42 to 7.61 ± 0.47; FG: 8.44 ± 0.58 to 8.38 ± 0.57) remained unchanged. Concentric and eccentric forces increased for both groups from session 1 to 4 (p < 0.001; η2p >0.39), while only peak eccentric forces increased until session 12 (p = 0.009; η2p = 0.21). In conclusion, even when men are able to produce greater forces with similar loads, accentuated eccentric RT produces similar strength and strength-related adaptations in male and female athletes. 4. Relationship between relative age measured through decimal age, physical variables and anthropometry in elite youth soccer players.

Abstract

Age differences between athletes born in the same year, as well as an over-representation of older players, are known as the Relative Age Effect (RAE). Players born at the beginning of the selection year have a physical and anthropometric advantage over their younger peers. Experts keep looking for new prediction variables for talent identification. The aim of the study is to correlate anthropometric, strength and power variables with the relative age (RA) and the level of the teams in which players played in each age category. All players (N = 366) from an elite soccer academy of a Spanish club volunteered to participate in the study (U23-U10). There was a significant correlation between the RA of the players and the level of the team in which they played in each age category but no correlation between trimester of birth and level of the team. We found significant correlations between the players' physical capacities, anthropometry, RA and the level of the team in which they played for the same age category, mainly from U16 to U10. U23 did not show any correlation between RA and physical or anthropometric variables. Coaches should be cautious of choosing players based only on anthropometric or physical attributes. Abstract

Since most movements on the field require athletes to produce forces in variable and unpredictable contexts, the use of training programs based on identical repetitions of an exercise may not be optimal for movement transference. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyse the effects of unexpected eccentric load variability during resistance training in team sport players. Sixty-three men were randomly allocated to two experimental groups (Variable (VTG) and stable (STG) training group) and control group: (CG) volunteered to participate in this study. Experimental groups trained with the same average load of half-squat exercise twice a week for six weeks using rotary inertial devices (RIDs) with (VTG) and without (STG) an unexpected variability of the load. The squat force was measured for every session with force plates. Counter-movement jump (CMJ), sprint, and change of direction performances were measured pre and post-test. CMJ performance improved for VTG (p =.014; ES = 0.7) and STG (p =.005; ES = 0.79) but not for CG. Exposure to high eccentric forces with RIDs lead athletes to improve physical performance in the trained force vector but, since RIDs induce in high levels of variability per se, increasing the level of variability of the exercise will not add benefits to physical performance and training outcomes. HIGHLIGHTS The relevance of the study is to analyse if increasing the variability of the load will improve the athlete output to different physical performance tests. The exposure to eccentric overload with RIDs during the squat exercise allows to greater CMJ height improvements than those seen in the literature with RIDs without overloading the eccentric contraction. RIDs induce in high level of variability per se. Therefore, increasing the level of variability of the exercise will not add benefits to physical performance and training outcomes. 12. The Flywheel Device Shaft Shape Determines Force and Velocity Profiles in the Half Squat Exercise

Abstract

Flywheel resistance training devices can be classified by their shaft shape. The objective of this study was to analyze whether using two flywheel resistance training devices shaft shapes can influence force and velocity production, regardless of the inertia used. Thirty-nine (n = 39) healthy active men participated in this study. They were randomized to perform 3 sets of 7 repetitions at maximal concentric voluntary execution, followed by a break in the last third of the eccentric phase in the half squat exercise. A progressive rotational inertial setting of 0.11, 0.22, and 0.33 kg·m2 was used. Force- and velocity-time profiles were captured using two force plates and a synchronized linear encoder. Statistical parametric mapping was used to compare biomechanical output between the flywheel devices. The level of significance was set at p < 0.05. Force application was significantly higher in the horizontal cylinder-shaped device for the three moments of inertia used in the eccentric phase (p < 0.001). In the concentric phase, force application was significantly higher in the horizontal cylinder-shaped device in 0.11 (p < 0.001) and 0.22 kg·m2 (p < 0.001). The resultant speed was higher in the vertical cone-shaped device in the concentric phase and the eccentric phase for the three moments of inertia (p < 0.001). In conclusion, the flywheel shaft type determines the mechanical output of the half squat exercise, regardless of the moment of inertia used. While a horizontal cylinder-shaped device is more suitable to achieve higher forces, especially in the eccentric phase, a vertical cone-shaped device can be used to achieve higher speeds during the execution of the exercise.

El objetivo de este estudio fue examinar las diferencias en perfiles cinéticos y cinemáticos entre atletas con o sin experiencias en el uso de diferentes RIDs. Treinta y nueve hombres sanos realizaron un test incremental en el ejercicio de media sentadilla en dos RIDs diferentes: un dispositivo de eje horizontal con forma cilíndrica (YY) y otro de eje vertical y forma cónica (CP). Los participantes se agruparon en función de la experiencia en el uso de los dispositivos de inercia rotacional. Se analizaron el tiempo, la velocidad pico, la fuerza pico, el tiempo para alcanzar la fuerza pico, la fuerza promedio, el impulso y el rango de movimiento con el objetivo de determinar diferencias entre los grupos. Varios parámetros biomecánicos difirieron entre expertos y no expertos al usar el mismo dispositivo con los mismos momentos de inercia. El rango de movimiento fue mayor en los sujetos expertos que en los no expertos solo en los dispositivos YY. Los expertos lograron valores más altos usando dispositivos CP y YY en ejercicios de sentadilla que los no expertos, excepto en la fuerza pico excéntrica para YY. Abstract

El presente trabajo es una investigación descriptiva correlacional, orientada a estudiar la relación que existe entre el clima organizacional y la satisfacción laboral de los trabajadores del Proyecto Especial Plan de Mejoramiento de Riego en Sierra y Selva (Plan Meriss Cusco). La muestra estuvo constituida por 45 trabajadores incluidos Profesionales y Técnicos. Se les aplicó la Escala de Clima Organizacional de Likert y el Cuestionario de Satisfacción Laboral de Sonia Palma Carrillo. Los resultados fueron procesados utilizando el software SPSS 23.0 y el análisis estadístico de los datos obtenidos ha permitido arribar a la siguiente conclusión: Existe relación estadísticamente significativa entre clima organizacional y la satisfacción laboral de los trabajadores del Proyecto Especial Plan Meriss Cusco. 27. Cálculo de viabilidad económica para la activación de retenes en parques eólicos

Abstract

Trabajo Fin de Máster realizado en colaboración con EDP Renovables A partir de junio de 2014, la normativa que rige el precio correspondiente a la energía eólica cambió. Se pasó de tener un precio fijo bastante elevado, motivado por las subvenciones concedidas a las energías renovables, a contribuir de igual manera que otras tecnologías en el mercado eléctrico español, pasando a tener un precio horario variable (precio pool). Este cambio tuvo un gran impacto en la organización de parques eólicos, obligando a cambiar los contratos de mantenimiento que se tenían. Antes del cambio de legislación, se disponía comúnmente de contratos de mantenimiento durante los siete días a la semana, pero a partir de entonces, dejó de ser económicamente tan rentable, y se hizo necesario disponer de un horario de mantenimiento más reducido, normalmente de lunes a viernes, al que se añade un sistema de retenes, que no es más que un servicio de mantenimiento adicional durante parte del período que no cubre el horario laboral. Este servicio tiene un alto coste, pero el contratista tiene la capacidad de activarlo solamente cuando crea conveniente. De esta manera, en grandes empresas de control de parques eólicos surgió la necesidad de desarrollar herramientas informáticas que ayuden a determinar la toma de decisión a la persona responsable de activar el retén. Este programa debería de hacer un cálculo en tiempo real que determinase en qué casos activar un retén sería económicamente rentable, teniendo en cuenta el coste del retén y el beneficio que se espera obtener por la actuación del servicio. Posteriormente, para comprobar el buen funcionamiento de los algoritmos utilizados, habría que realizar un cálculo del beneficio real generado por las activaciones producidas, además de verificar que no se produjo un beneficio económico para las ocasiones que el programa no prevé que vaya a suceder. Siguiendo todas estas directrices, en este Trabajo Fin de Máster se explica la creación, optimización y funcionamiento de unas aplicaciones informáticas que realizan actualmente estos cometidos para la administración de 94 parques eólicos, gestionados por el centro de control eólico de la empresa EDP Renovables en Oviedo, donde he realizado las prácticas.

28. Application of technology for the analysis of Small-Sided Games in football. From complexity to chaos in training design: Reference to number of players, playing space, orientation, time distribution, directionality with goalkeepers, and feedback

Abstract

Small-sided games (SSGs) are frequently used in football training programs and their design has been analyzed in scientific literature. The aim of this study was to analyze differences in the mechanical and physiological demands of football SSGs with various configurations over an effective time of 6 min through the application of GPS/GNSS technology, heart rate monitoring, and player self-perceived effort. Thirty football players (21.59 ± 4.35 years, 72.74 ± 9.01 kg, and 178.16 ± 0.93 cm) completed 138 recordings during MD-3 sessions (matchday-3, 76 h pre-match) using Catapult OptimEye S5 devices, synchronized with the Polar system. The training structure was similar for all measurements. Analyses and comparisons were made using a total of ten training tasks and six study variables (dimensions, orientation, number of players, directionality, time distribution, and coaches’ feedback). SSGs played as 3 versus 3 showed higher mechanical responses with greater pitch sizes (p<0.001) and without the presence of goalkeepers (p< 0.032). SSGs with a 6 versus 6 format showed higher velocities were attained when the pitch was long (p= 0.021) and when the duration of the set was shorter (i.e., 2 min; p< 0.015). SSGs arranged as 3 versus 3, showed superior results for internal and external variables in comparison with 6 versus 6 (p< 0.025). The application of new technology is necessary to understand internal and external workload responses to the multiple possible variations of the elements of SSGs. The understanding of these resources will contribute to the development of training tasks based on the complexity of football itself, considering the wide possibilities offered to coaches.
