[eng] The population dynamics of the common quail males in Majorca were studied through censuses and captures during two reproductive cycles (2017 and 2018). Results were compared with those obtained in a monitoring program of 13 years (2005-2017) that had taken place in two sites in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula (Figuerola del Camp in Tarragona, and Alp in Girona). The aim of the study was to investigate the migratory status of the Majorca population and its possible connectivity with other adjacent populations. Being a game species, the knowledge of the phenology and population dynamics throughout the reproductive cycle allow suitable management and conservation. The temporal pattern of abundance of the quail found in Majorca was different from that of the continental populations. A very early phenology of breeding individuals, similar to that found in latitudes of the south of the Iberian Peninsula, suggests the possible winter stay of a fraction of the population in this island. On the other hand, a very delayed phenology in the presence of breeder yearlings suggests an isolation of the Majorca population in relation to the one that breeds in the continent. The lack of synchronization between the abundance pattern of the breeding stock and the cereal cycle, raises more detailed studies on the possible effects this may cause in the population., [cat] Es va estudiar la dinàmica poblacional dels mascles de guàtlera a Mallorca a través de censos i captures durant dos cicles reproductors (2017 i 2018). Els resultats es van comparar amb els obtinguts en un seguiment de 13 anys (2005-2017) que havia tingut lloc en dos localitats del nord-est de la península Ibèrica (Figuerola del Camp a Tarragona, i Alp a Girona). L'objectiu del treball va ser indagar l'estatus migratori de la població mallorquina i la seva possible connectivitat amb altres poblacions adjacents. En tractar-se d'una espècie cinegètica, el coneixement de la fenologia i dinàmica poblacional al llarg del cicle reproductor permeten una adequada gestió i conservació. El patró temporal d'abundància de la guàtlera trobat a Mallorca va ser diferent al de les poblacions continentals. Una fenologia molt primerenca d'individus reproductors, similar a la trobada en latituds del sud de la península Ibèrica, suggereix la possible permanència hivernal d'una fracció de la població en aquesta illa. Per altra banda, una fenologia molt endarrerida en la presència de joves reproductors nascuts dins l'any suggereix un aïllament de la població mallorquina en relació a la que cria al continent. La manca de sincronització entre el patró d'abundància dels efectius reproductors i el cicle del cereal, planteja la realització d'estudis més detallats sobre els possibles efectes que això pugui provocar en la població.

This paper presents the results of an unannounced theatre evacuation involving 1200 occupants. The evacuation took place towards the end of a live theatre performance in the Marlowe Theatre in Kent, UK. In particular, Response Phase behaviours are discussed, and response time data is presented. A significant finding of this work which is different to other reported work is that the occupant response time distribution, while following the typical log-normal distribution is related to the geometrical positioning of the occupants relative to proximity to exit aisles and exits. Response time is found to increase relative to seat distance from the exit aisles and distance of the seat row to an exit. The identified trends in response time distribution will have a profound impact on the analysis of evacuation times and congestion levels determined using agent based evacuation models and so should be represented within these models. Based on these findings, a generalised methodology is proposed to distribute response time within a theatre for use in evacuation simulation applications. Further experimental analysis is required to determine whether these observations can be generalised and applied to other seated venues such as cinemas, music venues and sports arenas.

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT), is sponsoring a research program, which includes investigation of the applicability of time-based egress performance requirements to U.S. passenger rail cars. This report describes the development of a new prototype railEXODUS computer software (Prototype Software) that can be used to evaluate the applicability of time-based egress requirements to U.S. passenger rail cars. The new Prototype Software is based on modifications to existing railEXODUS prototype software, which were implemented to adapt the EXODUS model for use in accurately predicting U.S. passenger rail car egress times.\ud \ud \ud All movement and behavior data for individuals (agents) within the new Prototype Software are derived from analysis of U.S. passenger rail car egress experimental trials conducted in 2005 and 2006. The experimental trials included egress of individuals from commuter rail cars using end- and side-door exits to: (1) a high platform under normal and emergency lighting conditions and (2) low platform and right-of-way locations under normal lighting. (All of the egress trials were conducted under best-case, non-competitive conditions.) This research found that the use of such software is essential for performing thorough analyses of passenger train emergency evacuation scenarios.

Chemical perception is considered one of the first senses used as a communication system between living organisms. Such communication is based on the emission of signals between a sender and a receiver; if the communication is chemical, these signals are called pheromones. These signals have evolved via natural selection through a mechanism known as ritualization, which converts cues (which are not adapted to communication and which the receiver picks up regardless of the interests of the sender) into signals (information that the sender transmits as an adaptative response to its previously developed perception of the receiver). When communication has evolved between actors (sender and receiver) with common interests, the honesty of the signal is taken for granted, since both want the same thing (i.e., there is no reason to deceive). If the actors have conflicting interests, however, then the possibility of deception seeps into the possible array of adaptations. This can be observed in the case of communicative mimicry. However, in other situations natural selection imposes conditions that screen the possible signals, allowing only those that meet the requirement of honesty to stabilize. These include indices and added-cost signals. The emission of pheromones plays a variety of roles in the life processes of living beings. It facilitates encounters between individuals of the same species and is heavily involved in the mechanisms of recognition of relatives. It also fosters behaviours such as altruism (cooperation between individuals that share a percentage of their genetic inheritance). In many species, including humans, chemical communication works behind the scenes to guide the choice of a sexual partner.
