Submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) are some of the most extreme star-forming systems in the Universe, whose place in the framework of galaxy evolution is as yet uncertain. It has been hypothesized that SMGs are progenitors of local early-type galaxies, requiring that SMGs generally reside in galaxy cluster progenitors at high redshift. We test this hypothesis and explore SMG environments using a narrow-band VLT/HAWK-I+GRAAL study of H  |$\alpha$| and [O  iii ] emitters around an unbiased sample of three ALMA-identified and spectroscopically confirmed SMGs at |$z \sim 2.3$| and |$\sim 3.3$|⁠ , where these SMGs were selected solely on spectroscopic redshift. Comparing with blank-field observations at similar epochs, we find that one of the three SMGs lies in an overdensity of emission-line sources on the |$\sim 4$| Mpc scale of the HAWK-I field of view, with overdensity parameter |$\delta _{g} = 2.6^{+1.4}_{-1.2}$|⁠. A second SMG is significantly overdense only on |$\lesssim 1.6$| Mpc scales and the final SMG is consistent with residing in a blank field environment. The total masses of the two overdensities are estimated to be |$\log (M_{h}/{\rm M}_{\odot }) =$| 12.1–14.4, leading to present-day masses of |$\log (M_{h,z=0}/{\rm M}_{\odot }) =$| 12.9–15.9. These results imply that SMGs occupy a range of environments, from overdense protoclusters or protogroups to the blank field, suggesting that while some SMGs are strong candidates for the progenitors of massive elliptical galaxies in clusters, this may not be their only possible evolutionary pathway. Measuring the environments of massive galaxies at high redshift is crucial to understanding galaxy evolution and the conditions that gave rise to the distribution of matter we see in the Universe today. While high- z radio galaxies (H z RGs) and quasars tend to reside in protocluster-like systems, the environments of their radio-quiet counterparts are relatively unexplored, particularly in the submillimetre, which traces dust-obscured star formation. In this study, we search for 850  μ m-selected submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) in the environments of massive (⁠|$M_{\star }$| |$\gt 10^{11}$| |${\rm M}_{\odot }$|⁠), radio-quiet (⁠|$L_{500 {\rm MHz}}$| |$\lesssim 10^{25}$|  WHz |$^{-1}$|⁠) galaxies at |$z \sim 1\!-\!3$| using data from the SCUBA-2 COSMOS (S2COSMOS) survey. By constructing number counts in circular regions of radius 1–6 arcmin and comparing with blank-field measurements, we find no significant overdensities of SMGs around massive radio-quiet galaxies at any of these scales, despite being sensitive down to overdensities of |$\delta \sim 0.4$|⁠. To probe deeper than the catalogue we also examine the distribution of peaks in the SCUBA-2 signal-to-noise (SNR) map, which reveals only tentative signs of any difference in the SMG densities of the radio-quiet galaxy environments compared to the blank field, and only on smaller scales (1 arcmin radii, corresponding to |$\sim 0.5$|  Mpc) and higher SNR thresholds. We conclude that massive, radio-quiet galaxies at cosmic noon are typically in environments with |$\delta \lesssim 0.4$|⁠ , which are either consistent with the blank field or contain only weak overdensities spanning sub-Mpc scales. The contrast between our results and studies of H z RGs with similar stellar masses and redshifts implies an intrinsic link between the wide-field environment and the radio luminosity of the active galactic nucleus at high redshift. The observation data of blazar 1ES 1426+42.8 were obtained using the 1.02 m optical telescope of Yunnan Observatories during 2021 to 2023. Intraday variability (IDV) is detected on seven nights. We use the turbulent model to investigate the mechanism of IDV in 1ES 1426+42.8. The fitting light curves match the actual IDV curves well. Using this model, we obtain the parameters such as the size of turbulent cells and the width of pulses in the jet. A possible short-lived quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) of |$58.55 \pm 8.09$| min was detected on 2022 April 26 whose light curve exhibits eight cycles at |$\gt 3\sigma$| global significance and confirmed by several different techniques. Through a more detailed analysis of the light curve of this night, we find that the period is shortened from 54.23 min (⁠|$4\sigma$|⁠) to 29.71 min (⁠|$3\sigma$|⁠). We obtain a quantitative star formation history (SFH) of a shell-like structure ('shell') located in the northeastern part of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We use the Survey of the MAgellanic Stellar History to derive colour–magnitude diagrams (CMDs), reaching below the oldest main-sequence turnoff, from which we compute the SFHs with CMD-fitting techniques. We present, for the first time, a novel technique that uses red clump (RC) stars from the CMDs to assess and account for the SMC's line-of-sight depth effect present during the SFH derivation. We find that accounting for this effect recovers a more accurate SFH. We quantify an |$\sim$| 7 kpc line-of-sight depth present in the CMDs, in good agreement with depth estimates from RC stars in the northeastern SMC. By isolating the stellar content of the northeastern shell and incorporating the line-of-sight depth into our calculations, we obtain an unprecedentedly detailed SFH. We find that the northeastern shell is primarily composed of stars younger than |$\sim$| 500 Myr, with significant star formation enhancements around |$\sim$| 250 and |$\sim$| 450 Myr. These young stars are the main contributors to the shell's structure. We show synchronicity between the northeastern shell's SFH with the Large Magellanic Cloud's (LMC) northern arm, which we attribute to the interaction history of the SMC with the LMC and the Milky Way (MW) over the past |$\sim$| 500 Myr. Our results highlight the complex interplay of ram pressure stripping and the influence of the MW's circumgalactic medium in shaping the SMC's northeastern shell. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The relation between nuclear star clusters (NSCs) and the growth of the central supermassive black holes (SMBHs), as well as their connection to the properties of the host galaxies, is crucial for understanding the evolution of galaxies. Recent observations have revealed that about 10 per cent of nucleated galaxies host hybrid nuclei, consisting of both NSCs and accreting SMBHs that power active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Motivated by the potential of the recently published multiwavelength data sets from LeMMINGs survey, here we present the most thorough investigation to date of the incidence of hybrid nuclei in a large sample of 100 nearby nucleated galaxies (10 E, 25 S0, 63 S, and 2 Irr), covering a wide range in stellar mass (⁠|$M_{*,\rm gal} \sim 10^{8.7}-10^{12}~\rm M_{\odot }$|⁠). We identify the nuclei and derive their properties by performing detailed 1D and 2D multicomponent decompositions of the optical and near-infrared HST stellar light distributions of the galaxies using Sérsic and core-Sérsic models. Our AGN diagnostics are based on homogeneously derived nuclear 1.5 GHz e -MERLIN radio, Chandra X-ray (0.3–10 keV), and optical emission-line data. We determine the nucleation fraction (⁠|$f_{\rm nuc}$|⁠) as the relative incidence of nuclei across the LeMMINGs HST sample and find |$f_{\rm nuc} =~$| 100/149 (= 67 |$\pm$| 7 per cent), confirming previous work, with a peak value of |$49/56~(= 88 \pm 13$|  per cent) at bulge masses |$M_{*,\rm bulge}\sim 10^{9.4}- 10^{10.8}~ \rm M_{\odot }$|⁠. We identify 30 nucleated LeMMINGs galaxies that are optically active, radio-detected, and X-ray luminous (⁠|$L_\textnormal {X} \gt 10^{39}$| erg s |$^{-1}$|⁠). This indicates that our nucleated sample has a lower limit |$\sim$| 30 per cent occupancy of hybrid nuclei, which is a function of |$M_{*,\rm bulge}$| and |$M_{*,\rm gal}$|⁠. We find that hybrid nuclei have a number density of |$(1.5 \pm 0.4)\times 10^{-5}$|  Mpc |$^{-3}$|⁠ , are more common at |$M_{*,\rm gal}\sim 10^{10.6}- 10^{11.8}~\rm M_{\odot }$| and occur, at least, three times more frequently than previously reported. We present the results of seven years of multicolour photometric monitoring of a sample of 31 |$\gamma$| -ray bright blazars using the RINGO3 polarimeter on the Liverpool Telescope from 2013–2020. We explore the relationships between simultaneous observations of flux in three optical wavebands along with Fermi |$\gamma$| -ray data in order to explore the radiation mechanisms and particle populations in blazar jets. We find significant correlations between optical and |$\gamma$| -ray flux with no detectable time lag, suggesting leptonic emission processes in the jets of these sources. Furthermore, we find the spectral behaviour against optical and |$\gamma$| -ray flux for many sources is best fit logarithmically. This is suggestive of a transition between bluer-/redder-when-brighter into stable-when-brighter behaviour during high activity states; a behaviour that might be missed in poorly sampled data, resulting in apparent linear relationships. In a strong gravitational lensing system, the distorted light from a source is analysed to infer the properties of the lens. However, light emitted by the lens itself can contaminate the image of the source, introducing systematic errors in the analysis. We present a simple and efficient lens light model based on the well-tested multi-Gaussian expansion (MGE) method for representing galaxy surface brightness profiles, which we combine with a semi-linear inversion scheme for pixelized source modelling. Testing it against realistic mock lensing images, we show that our scheme can fit the lensed images to the noise level, with relative differences between the true input and best-fitting lens light model remaining below 5 per cent. We apply the MGE lens light model to 38 lenses from the HST SLACS sample. We find that the new scheme provides a good fit for the majority of the sample with only 3 exceptions – these show clear asymmetric residuals in the lens light. We examine the radial dependence of the ellipticity and position angles and confirm that it is common for a typical lens galaxy to exhibit twisting non-elliptical isophotes and boxy / disky isophotes. Upcoming telescopes and surveys will revolutionize our understanding of the Universe by providing unprecedented amounts of observations on extragalactic objects, which will require new tools complementing traditional astronomy methods, in particular machine learning techniques, and above all, deep architectures. In this study, we apply deep learning methods to estimate three essential parameters of galaxy evolution, i.e. redshift, stellar mass, and star formation rate (SFR), from a data set recently analysed and tailored to the Euclid context, containing simulated H -band images and tabulated photometric values. Our approach involved the development of a novel architecture called the FusionNetwork, combining two components suited to the heterogeneous data, ResNet50 for images, and a Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) for tabular data, through an additional MLP providing the overall output. The key achievement of our deep learning approach is the simultaneous estimation of the three quantities, previously estimated separately. Our model outperforms state-of-the-art methods: overall, our best FusionNetwork improves the fraction of correct SFR estimates from ∼70 to ∼80 per cent, while providing comparable results on redshift and stellar mass. The PRobe far-Infrared Mission for Astrophysics (PRIMA) concept aims to perform mapping with spectral coverage and sensitivities inaccessible to previous FIR space telescopes. PRIMA's imaging instrument, PRIMAger, provides unique hyperspectral imaging simultaneously covering 25–235 µm. We synthesize images representing a deep, 1500 h deg−2 PRIMAger survey, with realistic instrumental and confusion noise. We demonstrate that we can construct catalogues of galaxies with a high purity (>95 per cent) at a source density of 42 k deg−2 using PRIMAger data alone. Using the XID+ deblending tool, we show that we measure fluxes with an accuracy better than 20 per cent to flux levels of 0.16, 0.80, 9.7, and 15 mJy at 47.4, 79.7, 172, and 235 µm, respectively. These are a factor of ∼2 and ∼3 fainter than the classical confusion limits for 72–96 and 126–235 µm, respectively. At |$1.5 \le z \le 2$|⁠ , we detect and accurately measure fluxes in 8–10 of the 10 channels covering 47–235 µm for sources with |$2 \lesssim \log ({\rm SFR}) \lesssim 2.5$|⁠ , a 0.5 dex improvement on what might be expected from the classical confusion limit. Recognizing that PRIMager will operate in a context where high-quality data will be available at other wavelengths, we investigate the benefits of introducing additional prior information. We show that by introducing even weak prior flux information when employing a higher source density catalogue (more than one source per beam), we can obtain accurate fluxes an order of magnitude below the classical confusion limit for 96–235 µm. We examine deep optical images of edge-on galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82. The entire sample consists of over 800 genuine edge-on galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts out to |$z\sim 0.2$|⁠. To discern the faintest details around the galaxies, we use three different data sources with a photometric depth of down to 30 mag arcsec |$^{-2}$| in the r band: SDSS Stripe 82, Hyper Suprime-Cam Strategic Program, and DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys. Our analysis of the deep images reveals a variety of low surface brightness features. 49 galaxies exhibit prominent tidal structures, including tidal tails, stellar streams, bridges, and diffuse shells. Additionally, 56 galaxies demonstrate peculiar structural features such as lopsided discs, faint warps, and dim polar rings. Overall, we detect low surface brightness structures in 94 galaxies out of 838, accounting for 11  per cent of the sample. Notably, the fraction of tidal structures is only 5.8  per cent, which is significantly lower than that obtained in modern cosmological simulations and observations. Previous studies have shown that strongly interacting galaxies have stellar discs about 1.5–2 times thicker than those without apparent interactions. In an analysis where tidal features are carefully masked for precise disc axis ratio measurements, we show that discs of galaxies with tidal features are 1.33 times thicker, on average, than control galaxies that do not have visible tidal features. Furthermore, we find that edge-on galaxies with tidal structures tend to have a higher fraction of oval and boxy discs than galaxies without tidal features. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the impact of black hole nuclear activity on both the global and radial star formation rate (SFR) profiles in X-ray-selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the field of miniJPAS, the precursor of the much wider J-PAS project. Our sample includes 32 AGN with z < 0.3 detected via the XMM-Newton and Chandra surveys. For comparison, we assembled a control sample of 71 star-forming (SF) galaxies with similar magnitudes, sizes, and redshifts. To derive the global properties of both the AGN and the control SF sample, we used CIGALE to fit the spectral energy distributions derived from the 56 narrowband and 4 broadband filters from miniJPAS. We find that AGN tend to reside in more massive galaxies than their SF counterparts. After matching samples based on stellar mass and comparing their SFRs and specific SFRs (sSFRs), no significant differences appear. This suggests that the presence of AGN does not strongly influence overall star formation. However, when we used miniJPAS as an integral field unit (IFU) to dissect galaxies along their position angle, a different picture emerges. We find that AGN tend to be more centrally concentrated in mass with respect to SF galaxies. Moreover, we find a suppression of the sSFR up to 1Re and then an enhancement beyond 1Re, strongly contrasting with the decreasing radial profile of sSFRs in SF galaxies. This could point to an inside-out quenching of AGN host galaxies. Additionally, we examined how the radial profiles of the sSFRs in AGN and SF galaxies depend on galaxy morphology, by dividing our sample into disk-dominated (DD), pseudo-bulge (PB), and bulge-dominated (BD) systems. In DD systems, AGN exhibit a flat sSFR profile in the central regions and enhanced star formation beyond 1Re, contrasting with SF galaxies. In PB systems, SF galaxies show a decreasing sSFR profile, while AGN hosts exhibit an inside-out quenching scenario. In BD systems, both populations demonstrate consistent flat sSFR profiles. These findings suggest that the reason we do not see differences on a global scale is because star formation is suppressed in the central regions and enhanced in the outer regions of AGN host galaxies. While limited in terms of sample size, this work highlights the potential of the upcoming J-PAS as a wide-field low-resolution IFU for thousands of nearby galaxies and AGN. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the results of a 15-yr long-term optical monitoring of 11 quasars conducted with the 2-m Ritchey–Chretien–Coude and the 50/70 cm Schmidt telescopes at the Rozhen National Astronomical Observatory, Bulgaria. Our observations are performed with standard Johnson-Cousins |$VRI$| band filters and for each quasar we present a set of comparison standard stars that can be used for monitoring of objects in these fields (including finding charts for the stars identification). The variability and periodicity of each quasar are analysed individually and discussed. The physical properties of each quasar, such as their classification, redshift, and radio structures, are also discussed based on previous literature. Damped random walk model shows the best or the second best fit to the light curves of all objects. However, in six cases periodic models provide comparably good fits and make these six objects a valuable addition to the growing sample of quasars with periodic flux variation. They will be suitable for further investigation of the hitherto unclear mechanisms that give rise to this variability pattern. Our results provide important insights into the long-term variability and physical properties of quasars, which can further deepen our understanding of the nature and evolution of active galaxy nuclei. We apply the 3D dust radiative transfer code skirt to the low-redshift (z ≤ 0.1) galaxy population in the TNG100 cosmological simulation, the fiducial run of the IllustrisTNG project. We compute global fluxes and spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from the far-ultraviolet to the submillimetre for |$\approx 60\, 000$| galaxies, with the same post-processing methodology that was previously applied to the TNG50 simulation. We verify that TNG100 reproduces observational luminosity functions at low redshifts to excellent precision, unlike TNG50. Additionally, we test the realism of our TNG100 plus skirt fluxes by comparing various flux and colour relations to data from the GAMA survey. TNG100 broadly reproduces the observed distributions, but we predict ultraviolet colours that are too blue by |$\approx 0.4\, \mathrm{mag}$|⁠ , possibly related to the extinction in the star-forming regions subgrid model not being selective enough. Furthermore, we find that the simulated galaxies exhibit mid-infrared fluxes elevated by up to |$\approx 0.5\, \mathrm{mag}$| that we attribute to overly effective stochastic heating of the diffuse dust. All synthetic broad-band fluxes and SEDs are made publicly available in three orientations and four apertures, and can readily be used to study TNG100 galaxies in a mock observational fashion. Accurate photometric redshift (photo- z) estimation requires support from multiband observational data. However, in the actual process of astronomical observations and data processing, some sources may have missing observational data in certain bands for various reasons. This could greatly affect the accuracy and reliability of photo- z estimation for these sources, and even render some estimation methods unusable. The same situation may exist for the upcoming Chinese Space Station Telescope (CSST). In this study, we employ a deep learning method called generative adversarial imputation networks (GAIN) to impute the missing photometric data in CSST , aiming to reduce the impact of data missing on photo- z estimation and improve estimation accuracy. Our results demonstrate that using the GAIN technique can effectively fill in the missing photometric data in CSST. Particularly, when the data missing rate is below 30 per cent, the imputation of photometric data exhibits high accuracy, with higher accuracy in the g, r, i, z , and y bands compared to the NUV and u bands. After filling in the missing values, the quality of photo- z estimation obtained by the widely used easy and accurate Zphot from Yale (eazy) software is notably enhanced. Evaluation metrics for assessing the quality of photo- z estimation, including the catastrophic outlier fraction (f out), the normalized median absolute deviation (⁠|$\rm {\sigma _{NMAD}}$|⁠), and the bias of photometric redshift (bias), all show some degree of improvement. Our research will help maximize the utilization of observational data and provide a new method for handling sample missing values for applications that require complete photometry data to produce results. We present the analysis of the stellar population and star formation history of 181 MIRI selected galaxies at z  = 0 − 3.5 in the massive galaxy cluster field SMACS J0723.3–7327, commonly referred to as SMACS0723, using the JWST Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI). We combine the data with the JWST Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) catalogue, in conjunction with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFC3/IR and ACS imaging. We find that the MIRI bands capture PAH features and dust emission, significantly enhancing the accuracy of photometric redshift and measurements of the physical properties of these galaxies. The median photo- z 's of galaxies with MIRI data are found to have a small 0.1 per cent difference from spectroscopic redshifts and reducing the error by 20 per cent. With MIRI data included in SED fits, we find that the measured stellar masses are unchanged, while the star formation rate is slightly lower by 0.1 dex. We also fit the median SED of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and star-forming galaxies (SFG) separately. MIRI data provides tighter constraints on the AGN contribution, reducing the typical AGN contributions by ∼15 per cent. In addition, we also compare the median SED obtained with and without MIRI, and we find that including MIRI data yields steeper optical and UV slopes, indicating bluer colours, lower dust attenuation, and younger stellar populations. In the future, MIRI/MRS will enhance our understanding by providing more detailed spectral information and allowing for the study of specific emission features and diagnostics associated with AGN. NGC 4395 is a dwarf type 1 Seyfert galaxy with a possible intermediate-mass black hole of several |$\rm {10^4}$| solar masses in its centre. As a well-studied object, its broad-line region size has been measured via H  |$\rm {\alpha }$| time lag in numerous spectroscopic reverberation mapping (SRM) and narrow-band photometric reverberation mapping (PRM) campaigns. Here, we present its H  |$\rm {\alpha }$| time lag measurement using broad-band photometric data, with the application of our newly developed ICCF-Cut (Interpolation and Cross-Correlation Function - Cut) method as well as the javelin (Just Another Vehicle for Estimating Lags In Nuclei) and χ2 methods. Utilizing the minute-cadence multiband light curves obtained from the |$\rm {2}$| -m Faulkes Telescope North and |$\rm {10.4}$| -m Gran Telescopio Canarias telescopes in recent works, we measured its H  |$\rm {\alpha }$| lag as approximately 40–90 min from broad-band PRM. With the H  |$\rm {\alpha }$| emission line velocity dispersion, we calculated its central black hole mass as |$M_{\rm BH} = (8\pm 4) \times 10^3\ \mathrm{ M}_{\rm \odot }$|⁠. These results are comparable with previous results obtained by narrow-band PRM and SRM, providing further support to an intermediate-mass black hole in NGC 4395. In addition, our study also validates the ICCF-Cut as an effective method for broad-band PRM, which holds the potential for widespread application in the era of large multi-epoch, high-cadence photometric surveys. Photometric redshifts are a key ingredient in the analysis and interpretation of large-scale structure (LSS) surveys. The accuracy and precision of these redshift estimates are directly linked to the constraining power of photometric surveys. It is hence necessary to define precision and accuracy requirements for the redshift calibration to not infer biased results in the final analysis. For weak gravitational lensing of the LSS, the photometry culminates in the estimation of the source-redshift distribution (SRD) in each of the tomographic bins used in the analysis. The focus has been on shifts of the mean of the SRDs and how well the calibration must be able to recover those. Since the estimated SRDs are usually given as a normalized histogram with corresponding errors, it would be advantageous to propagate these uncertainties accordingly to see whether the requirements of the given survey are indeed fulfilled. Here, we propose the use of functional derivatives to calculate the sensitivity of the final observables, for examples, the lensing angular power spectrum, with respect to the SRD at a specific redshift. This allows the propagation of arbitrarily shaped small perturbations to the SRD, without having to run the whole analysis pipeline for each realization again. We apply our method to a survey with Euclid-like specifications and demonstrate it with SRDs of the KV450 data set, recovering previous results. Lastly, we note that the moments of the SRD of order larger than two will probably not be relevant when propagating redshift uncertainties in cosmic shear analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We performed differential number counts down to 4.25 sigma using ALMA Band 3 calibrator images, which are known for their high dynamic range and susceptibility to various types of contamination. Estimating the fraction of contaminants is an intricate process due to correlated non-Gaussian noise, and it is often compounded by the presence of false positives generated during the cleaning phase. In addition, calibrator extensions further complicate the counting of background sources. In order to address these challenges, our strategy employs a machine learning-based approach utilizing the UMLAUT algorithm. UMLAUT assigns a value to each detection, and it considers how likely it is for there to be a genuine background source or a contaminant. With respect to this goal, we provide UMLAUT with eight observational input parameters, each automatically weighted using a gradient descent method. Our methodology significantly improves the precision of differential number counts, thus surpassing conventional techniques, including visual inspection. This study contributes to a better understanding of radio sources, particularly in the challenging sub-5 sigma regime, within the complex context of a high dynamic range of ALMA calibrator images. We investigate the constraints provided by the Euclid space observatory on the physical properties of dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) at |$z\gtrsim 1.5$| detected in wide area submillimetre surveys with Herschel. We adopt a physical model for the high- z progenitors of spheroidal galaxies, which form the bulk of DSFGs at |$z\gtrsim 1.5$|⁠. We improve the model by combining the output of the equations of the model with a formalism for the spectral energy distribution (SED). After optimizing the SED parameters to reproduce the measured infrared luminosity function and number counts of DFSGs, we simulated a sample of DSFGs over 100  |$\hbox{deg}^2$| and then applied a |$5\, \sigma$| detection limit of |$37\,$|  mJy at 250  |$\mu$| m. We estimated the redshifts from the Euclid data and then fitted the Euclid + Herschel photometry with the code CIGALE to extract the physical parameters. We found that 100 per cent of the Herschel galaxies are detected in all 4 Euclid bands above |$3\, \sigma$|⁠. For 87 per cent of these sources the accuracy on |$1 + z$| is better than 15 per cent. The sample comprises mostly massive, i.e. |$\log (M_{\star }/{\rm M}_{\odot })\sim 10.5{\!-\!}12.9$|⁠ , highly star forming, i.e. |$\log (\hbox{SFR}/{\rm M}_{\odot }\hbox{yr}^{-1})\sim 1.5{\!-\!}4$|⁠ , dusty, i.e. |$\log (M_{\rm dust}/{\rm M}_{\odot })\sim 7.5{\!-\!}9.9$|⁠ , galaxies. The measured stellar masses have a dispersion of 0.19 dex around the true value, thus showing that Euclid will provide reliable stellar mass estimates for the majority of the bright DSFGs at |$z\gtrsim 1.5$| detected by Herschel. Bolstered by upcoming data from new-generation observational campaigns, we are about to enter a new era in the study of how galaxies form and evolve. The unprecedented quantity of data that will be collected from distances that have only marginally been grasped up to now will require analytical tools designed to target the specific physical peculiarities of the observed sources and handle extremely large datasets. One powerful method to investigate the complex astrophysical processes that govern the properties of galaxies is to model their observed spectral energy distributions (SEDs) at different stages of evolution and times throughout the history of the Universe. To address these challenges, we have developed GalaPy, a new library for modelling and fitting SEDs of galaxies from the X-ray to the radio band, as well as the evolution of their components and dust attenuation and reradiation. On the physical side, GalaPy incorporates both empirical and physically motivated star formation histories (SFHs), state-of-the-art single stellar population synthesis libraries, a two-component dust model for attenuation, an age-dependent energy conservation algorithm to compute dust reradiation, and additional sources of stellar continuum such as synchrotron, nebular and free-free emission, as well as X-ray radiation from low-and high-mass binary stars. On the computational side, GalaPy implements a hybrid approach that combines the high performance of compiled C++ with the user-friendly flexibility of Python. Also, it exploits an object-oriented design via advanced programming techniques. GalaPy is the fastest SED-generation tool of its kind, with a peak performance of almost 1000 SEDs per second. The models are generated on the fly without relying on templates, thus minimising memory consumption. It exploits a fully Bayesian parameter space sampling, which allows for the inference of parameter posteriors and thereby facilitates the study of the correlations between the free parameters and the other physical quantities that can be derived from modelling. The application programming interface (API) and functions of GalaPy are under continuous development, with planned extensions in the near future. In this first work, we introduce the project and showcase the photometric SED fitting tools already available to users. Context. We investigate the physical nature of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) using machine learning (ML) tools. Aims. We show that the redshift, z, bolometric luminosity, LBol, central mass of the supermassive black hole (SMBH), MBH, Eddington ratio, λEdd, and AGN class (obscured or unobscured) can be reconstructed through multi-wavelength photometric observations only. Methods. We trained a random forest regressor (RFR) ML-model on 7616 spectroscopically observed AGNs from the SPIDERS-AGN survey, which had previously been cross-matched with soft X-ray observations (from ROSAT or XMM), WISE mid-infrared photometry, and optical photometry from SDSS ugriz filters. We built a catalog of 21 050 AGNs that were subsequently reconstructed with the trained RFR; for 9687 sources, we found archival redshift measurements. All AGNs were classified as either type 1 or type 2 using a random forest classifier (RFC) algorithm on a subset of known sources. All known photometric measurement uncertainties were incorporated via a simulation-based approach. Results. We present the reconstructed catalog of 21 050 AGNs with redshifts ranging from 0 < z < 2.5. We determined z estimations for 11 363 new sources, with both accuracy and outlier rates within 2%. The distinction between type 1 or type 2 AGNs could be identified with respective efficiencies of 94% and 89%. The estimated obscuration level, a proxy for AGN classification, of all sources is given in the dataset. The LBol, MBH, and λEdd values are given for 21 050 new sources with their estimated error. These results have been made publicly available. Conclusions. The release of this catalog will advance AGN studies by presenting key parameters of the accretion history of 6 dex in luminosity over a wide range of z. Similar applications of ML techniques using photometric data only will be essential in the future, with large datasets from eROSITA, JSWT, and the VRO poised to be released in the next decade. We present reduced images and catalogues of photometric and emission-line data (∼230 000 and ∼8000 sources, respectively) for the WFC3 (Wide Field Camera 3) Infrared Spectroscopic Parallel (WISP) survey. These data are made publicly available on the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes and include reduced images from various facilities: ground-based ugri, Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFC3, and Spitzer IRAC (Infrared Array Camera). Coverage in at least one additional filter beyond the WFC3/IR data are available for roughly half of the fields (227 out of 483), with ∼20 per cent (86) having coverage in six or more filters from u band to IRAC 3.6  |$\mu$| m (0.35–3.6  |$\mu$| m). For the lower spatial resolution (and shallower) ground-based and IRAC data, we perform PSF (point spread function)-matched, prior-based, deconfusion photometry (i.e. forced-photometry) using the tphot software to optimally extract measurements or upper limits. We present the methodology and software used for the WISP emission-line detection and visual inspection. The former adopts a continuous wavelet transformation that significantly reduces the number of spurious sources as candidates before the visual inspection stage. We combine both WISP catalogues and perform spectral energy distribution fitting on galaxies with reliable spectroscopic redshifts and multiband photometry to measure their stellar masses. We stack WISP spectra as functions of stellar mass and redshift and measure average emission-line fluxes and ratios. We find that WISP emission-line sources are typically 'normal' star-forming galaxies based on the mass–excitation diagram ([O  iii ]/Hβ versus M ⋆; 0.74 < z grism < 2.31), the galaxy main sequence (SFR versus M ⋆; 0.30 < z grism < 1.45), S 32 ratio versus M ⋆ (0.30 < z grism < 0.73), and O 32 and R 23 ratios versus M ⋆ (1.27 < z grism < 1.45). We investigate how the recovery of galaxy star formation rates (SFRs) using energy-balance spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting codes depends on their recent star formation histories (SFHs). We use the magphys and prospector codes to fit 6706 synthetic SEDs of simulated massive galaxies at 1 < z < 8 from the Feedback in Realistic Environments project. We identify a previously unknown systematic error in the magphys results due to bursty star formation: the derived SFRs can differ from the truth by as much as 1 dex, at large statistical significance (>5σ), depending on the details of their recent SFH. SFRs inferred using prospector with non-parametric SFHs do not exhibit this trend. We show that using parametric SFHs (pSFHs) causes SFR uncertainties to be underestimated by a factor of up to 5×. Although this undoubtedly contributes to the significance of the systematic, it cannot explain the largest biases in the SFRs of the starbursting galaxies, which could be caused by details of the stochastic prior sampling or the burst implementation in the magphys libraries. We advise against using pSFHs and urge careful consideration of starbursts when SED modelling galaxies where the SFR may have changed significantly over the last ∼100 Myr, such as recently quenched galaxies, or those experiencing a burst. In this paper, we discuss measurements of the stellar population and star-forming properties for 43 spectroscopically confirmed publicly available high-redshift z > 7 JWST galaxies in the JADES and CEERS observational programs. We carry out a thorough study investigating the relationship between spectroscopic features and photometrically derived ones, including from spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting of models, as well as morphological and structural properties. We find that the star formation rates (SFRs) measured from H β line emission are higher than those estimated from Bayesian SED fitting and ultraviolet (UV) luminosity, with ratios SFRH β/SFRUV ranging from ∼2 to 13. This is a sign that the star formation history is consistently rising given the time-scales of H β versus UV star formation probes. In addition, we investigate how well equivalent widths (EWs) of H β λ4861, [O  iii ] λ4959, and [O  iii ] λ5007 can be measured from photometry, finding that, on average, the EW derived from photometric excesses in filters is 30 per cent smaller than the direct spectroscopic measurement. We also discover that a stack of the line emitting galaxies shows a distinct morphology after subtracting imaging that contains only the continuum. This gives us a first view of the line or ionized gas emission from z > 7 galaxies, demonstrating that this material has a similar distribution, statistically, as the continuum. We also compare the derived SFRs and stellar masses for both parametric and non-parametric star formation histories, where we find that 35 per cent of our sample formed at least 30 per cent of their stellar mass in recent (<10 Myr) starburst events. Aims. We derived galaxy colour selections from Euclid and ground-based photometry, aiming to accurately define background galaxy samples in cluster weak-lensing analyses. These selections have been implemented in the Euclid data analysis pipelines for galaxy clusters. Methods. Given any set of photometric bands, we developed a method for the calibration of optimal galaxy colour selections that maximises the selection completeness, given a threshold on purity. Such colour selections are expressed as a function of the lens redshift. Results. We calibrated galaxy selections using simulated ground-based griz and EuclidYEJEHE photometry. Both selections produce a purity higher than 97%. The griz selection completeness ranges from 30% to 84% in the lens redshift range zl ∈ [0.2, 0.8]. With the full grizYEJEHE selection, the completeness improves by up to 25 percentage points, and the zl range extends up to zl = 1.5. The calibrated colour selections are stable to changes in the sample limiting magnitudes and redshift, and the selection based on griz bands provides excellent results on real external datasets. Furthermore, the calibrated selections provide stable results using alternative photometric aperture definitions obtained from different ground-based telescopes. The griz selection is also purer at high redshift and more complete at low redshift compared to colour selections found in the literature. We find excellent agreement in terms of purity and completeness between the analysis of an independent, simulated Euclid galaxy catalogue and our calibration sample, except for galaxies at high redshifts, for which we obtain up to 50 percentage points higher completeness. The combination of colour and photo-z selections applied to simulated Euclid data yields up to 95% completeness, while the purity decreases down to 92% at high zl. We show that the calibrated colour selections provide robust results even when observations from a single band are missing from the ground-based data. Finally, we show that colour selections do not disrupt the shear calibration for stage III surveys. Long-period comets C/2019 L3 (ATLAS) and C/2020 P3 (ATLAS) remain active at heliocentric distance greater than 4 au. Broad-band Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) photometry of long-period comets C/2019 L3 and C/2020 P3 is analysed in this paper. The observation was obtained with three telescopes: ZEISS-1000 at Simeiz Observatory, Maksutov at Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory, and ZTSh at Crimean Astrophysical Observatory. The R -band A (0) f ρ values of C/2019 L3 range from (5043 ± 244) to (13611 ± 1874) cm, and tend to decrease first and then increase. The average colour indices of C/2019 L3 are B – V = 0.75 ± 0.06, V – R = 0.28 ± 0.05, and R – I = 0.21 ± 0.05. The reddening of C/2019 L3 exhibits variations during the observational runs, ranging from (13.75 ± 1.07) to (−15.69 ± 0.37) per cent/kÅ with an average value of (0.94 ± 0.23) per cent/kÅ. It possesses a non-steady coma since the average gradient of its surface brightness profile is −1.60. For comet C/2020 P3, its R -band A (0) f ρ values range from (606 ± 31) to (869 ± 20) cm, the colour indices are B–V = 1.04 ± 0.09, V–R = 0.26 ± 0.05, and R – I = 0.76 ± 0.04, and the reddening is (−6.65 ± 0.01) per cent/kÅ. The colour indices of the two comets differ from those of other long-period comets. Compared with other long-period comets, comet C/2019 L3 is very active at heliocentric distance of ∼4 au, while C/2020 P3 is moderately active at heliocentric distance of ∼7 au. We present stellar population synthesis modelling of the nearby interacting galaxy system NGC 4485/90 or Arp 269 using Code Investigating GALaxy Emission. Model results are used to constrain its interaction history and to examine the origin of structures within the system. We have used multiwavelength observations ranging from far-ultraviolet to radio wavelengths to create, model, and fit spectral energy distributions and obtain physical properties of different regions. Our analysis reveals a young and an underlying much older stellar population in both NGC 4485 and 4490. We find the bridge connecting the two galaxies to be formed quite recently, after the second perigalactic encounter between the two. Our analysis shows that the previously identified faint stellar extension associated with NGC 4490 was also formed after the second encounter, which agrees with previous N -body and test-particle simulations. Additionally, we investigate the H  i gas distribution in NGC 4485 and find that a mass of H  i gas comparable to a dwarf galaxy has been relocated to the south-west part of NGC 4485. This is consistent with the scenario in which the interstellar medium of NGC 4485 is being removed via ram pressure stripping. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We observed the blazar 2200 + 420 in the I, R, and V bands using the 1.0 m telescope at Weihai Observatory of Shandong University on eight nights in October 2022 and obtained over 3800 data points. Using the F-test and ANOVA test, we analysed the light curves and found intra-day (IDV) variability every night. We found that all variability amplitudes (Amp) are over 10 per cent, except for 2022 October 22, with four nights having amplitudes above 20 per cent and the maximum amplitude reaching over 42 per cent. Additionally, we discovered a minimal variability time-scale of 24.6 min and a bluer-when-brighter (BWB) trend on intra-day for this object. No significant time lag between different bands was detected during the eight nights of observation. Based on the shortest variability time-scale and a model assuming the variations arise close to the central black hole that are adverted into the jet, we estimated the upper limits of the black hole mass to be MBH  = 8.6 × 107 M⊙. The BWB trend on intra-day supports the shock-in-jet model, which can also explain the IDV of blazars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have carried out Hubble Space Telescope (HST) snapshot observations at 1.1 μm of 281 candidate strongly lensed galaxies identified in the wide-area extragalactic surveys conducted with the Herschel Space Observatory. Our candidates comprise systems with flux densities at |$500\, \mu$| m, S 500 ≥ 80 mJy. We model and subtract the surface brightness distribution for 130 systems, where we identify a candidate for the foreground lens candidate. After combining visual inspection, archival high-resolution observations, and lens subtraction, we divide the systems into different classes according to their lensing likelihood. We confirm 65 systems to be lensed. Of these, 30 are new discoveries. We successfully perform lens modelling and source reconstruction on 23 systems, where the foreground lenses are isolated galaxies and the background sources are detected in the HST images. All the systems are successfully modelled as a singular isothermal ellipsoid. The Einstein radii of the lenses and the magnifications of the background sources are consistent with previous studies. However, the background source circularized radii (between 0.34 and 1.30 kpc) are ∼3 times smaller than the ones measured in the sub-millimetre/millimetre for a similarly selected and partially overlapping sample. We compare our lenses with those in the Sloan Lens Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) Survey confirming that our lens-independent selection is more effective at picking up fainter and diffuse galaxies and group lenses. This sample represents the first step towards characterizing the near-infrared properties and stellar masses of the gravitationally lensed dusty star-forming galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We analyse the size evolution of 16 000 star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and 5000 quiescent galaxies (QGs) with mass M * > 109.5 M⊙ at 0.1 < z < 0.9 from the COSMOS field using deep CLAUDS + HSC imaging in two rest-frame wavelengths, 3000 Å (UV light) and 5000 Å (visible light). With half-light radius (R e) as proxy for size, SFGs at characteristic mass M 0 = 5 × 1010 M⊙ grow by 20 per cent (30 per cent) in UV (visible) light since z ∼ 1 and the strength of their size evolution increases with stellar mass. After accounting for mass growth due to star formation, we estimate that SFGs grow by 75 per cent in all stellar mass bins and in both rest-frame wavelengths. Redder SFGs are more massive, smaller and more concentrated than bluer SFGs and the fraction of red SFGs increases with time. These results point to the emergence of bulges as the dominant mechanism for the average size growth of SFGs. We find two threshold values for the stellar mass density within central 1 kpc (Σ1): all SFGs with log Σ1 ≳ 9 are red and only QGs have log Σ1 ≳ 9.7. The size of M * = M 0 QGs grows by 50 per cent (110 per cent) in the UV (visible) light. Up to |$\sim 20~{{\rm per\,cent}}$| of this increase in size of massive QGs is due to newcomers (recently quenched galaxies). However, newcomers cannot explain the observed pace in the size growth of QGs; that trend has to be dominated by processes affecting individual galaxies, such as minor mergers and accretion. Variability studies of active galactic nuclei are a powerful diagnostic tool in understanding the physical processes occurring in disc-jet regions, unresolved by direct imaging with currently available techniques. Here, we report the first attempt to systematically characterize intra-night optical variability (INOV) for a sample of seven apparently radio-quiet narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (RQNLSy1s) that had shown recurring flaring at 37 GHz in the radio observations at Metsähovi Radio Observatory, indicating the presence of relativistic jets in them, but no evidence for relativistic jets in the recent radio observations of Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array at 1.6, 5.2, and 9.0 GHz. We have conducted a total of 28 intra-night sessions, each lasting ≥3 h for this sample, resulting in an INOV duty cycle (⁠|$\overline{\mathrm{ DC}} ~\sim$| 20 per cent) similar to that reported for γ-ray-NLSy1s (DC ∼ 25 per cent–30 per cent), that display blazar-like INOV. This in turn infers the presence of relativistic jet in our sample sources. Thus, it appears that even lower mass (M BH ∼ 106 M⊙) RQNLSy1 galaxies can maintain blazar-like activities. However, we note that the magnetic reconnection in the magnetosphere of the black hole can also be a viable mechanism to give rise to the INOV from these sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a sample of 950 edge-on spiral galaxies found with the use of an artificial neural network in the Hubble Space Telescope COSMOS field. This is currently the largest sample of distant edge-on galaxies. For all galaxies we analysed the 2D brightness distributions in the F814W filter and measured the radial and vertical exponential scales (h and hz correspondingly) of the brightness distribution. By comparing the characteristics of distant galaxies with those of nearby objects, we conclude that thin stellar discs with h / hz ≥ 10 at z ≈ 0.5 should be rarer than today. Both exponential scales of the stellar disc show evidence of luminosity-dependent evolution: in faint galaxies the h and hz values do not change with z , in bright (and massive) spiral galaxies both scales, on average, grow towards our epoch. Spiral structure can contribute significantly to a galaxy's luminosity. However, only rarely are proper photometric models of spiral arms used in decompositions. As we show in the previous work, including the spirals as a separate component in a photometric model of a galaxy would both allow to obtain their structural parameters, and reduce the systematic errors in estimating the parameters of other components. Doing so in different wavebands, one can explore how their properties vary with the wavelength. In this paper, second in this series, we perform decomposition of M 51 in 17 bands, from the far-ultraviolet (UV) to far-infrared, using imaging from the DustPedia project. We use the same 2D photometric model of spiral structure where each arm is modelled independently. The complex and asymmetric spiral structure in M 51 is reproduced relatively well with our model. We analyse the differences between models with and without spiral arms, and investigate how the fit parameters change with wavelength. In particular, we find that the spiral arms demonstrate the largest width in the optical, whereas their contribution to the galaxy luminosity is most significant in the UV. The disc central intensity drops by a factor of 1.25–3 and its exponential scale changes by 5–10 per cent when spiral arms are included, depending on wavelength. Taking into account the full light distribution across the arms, we do not observe the signs of a long-lived density wave in the spiral pattern of M 51 as a whole. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Isolated galaxies are the ideal reference sample to study the galaxy structure minimizing potential environmental effects. We selected a complete sample of 14 nearby, late-type, highly inclined (i ≥ 80°), isolated galaxies from the Catalogue of Isolated Galaxies (CIG) which offers a vertical view of their disc structure. We aim to study extraplanar Diffuse Ionized Gas (eDIG) by comparing the old and young disc components traced by near-infrared (NIR) and ultraviolet (UV) imaging with the Hα emission structure. We obtained Hα monochromatic maps from the Fabry–Perot (FP) interferometry, while the old and young discs structures are obtained from the photometric analysis of the 2MASS K s band, and GALEX NUV and FUV images, thereby identifying the stellar disc and whether the eDIG is present. The Hα morphology is peculiar in CIG 71, CIG 183, and CIG 593 showing clear asymmetries. In general, geometric parameters (isophotal position angle, peak light distribution, and inclination) measured from Hα, UV, and NIR show minimal differences (e.g. Δ i ≤ ±10°), suggesting that interaction does not play a significant role in shaping the morphology, as expected in isolated galaxies. From Hα maps, the eDIG was detected vertically in 11 out of 14 galaxies. Although the fraction of eDIG is high, the comparison between our sample and a generic sample of inclined spirals suggests that the phenomenon is uncorrelated to the galaxy environment. As suggested by the extraplanar UV emission found in 13 out of 14 galaxies the star formation extends well beyond the disc defined by the Hα map. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Galaxy morphology offers significant insights into the evolutionary pathways and underlying physics of galaxies. As astronomical data grow with surveys such as Euclid and Vera C. Rubin, there is a need for tools to classify and analyse the vast numbers of galaxies that will be observed. In this work, we introduce a novel classification technique blending unsupervised clustering based on morphological metrics with the scalability of supervised Convolutional Neural Networks. We delve into a comparative analysis between the well-known CAS (Concentration, Asymmetry, and Smoothness) metrics and our newly proposed EGG (Entropy, Gini, and Gradient Pattern Analysis). Our choice of the EGG system stems from its separation-oriented metrics, maximizing morphological class contrast. We leverage relationships between metrics and morphological classes, leading to an internal agreement between unsupervised clustering and supervised classification. Applying our methodology to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data, we obtain ∼95  per cent of Overall Accuracy of purely unsupervised classification and when we replicate T-Type and visually classified galaxy catalogues with accuracy of ∼88 and ∼89 per cent, respectively, illustrating the method's practicality. Furthermore, the application to Hubble Space Telescope data heralds the potential for unsupervised exploration of a higher redshift range. A notable achievement is our ∼95  per cent accuracy in unsupervised classification, a result that rivals when juxtaposed with Traditional Machine Learning and closely trails when compared to Deep Learning benchmarks. We investigate how the properties of massive black hole binaries influence the observed properties of core galaxies. We compare the observed trend in stellar mass deficit as a function of total stellar mass in the core galaxy with predicted trends in IllustrisTNG. We calculate mass deficits in simulated galaxies by applying subgrid, post-processing physics based on the results of literature N -body experiments. We find that the median value of the posterior distribution for the minimum binary mass ratio capable of creating a core is 0.7. For the gas mass fraction above which a core is erased, we find a median value of 0.6. Thus, low mass ratio binaries do not contribute to core formation and gas-rich mergers must lead to star formation within the nucleus, ultimately erasing the core. Such constraints have important implications for the overall massive black hole binary population, black hole–galaxy co-evolution, and the origin of the gravitational wave background. It has been an unanswered question how many dusty galaxies have been undetected from the state-of-the-art observational surveys. JWST enables us to detect faint infrared (IR) galaxies that have prominent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) features in the mid-IR wavelengths. PAH is a valuable tracer of star formation and dust properties in the mid-IR wavelength. The JWST Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) fields provide us with wavelength coverage from 7.7 to 21 μm using six photometric bands of the mid-IR instrument (MIRI). We have identified galaxies dominated by mid-IR emission from PAHs, termed PAH galaxies. From our multiband photometry catalogue, we selected 10 PAH galaxies displaying high flux ratios of log (S 15/ S 10) > 0.8. The SED fitting analysis indicates that these galaxies are star-forming galaxies with total IR luminosities of 1010 ∼ 1011.5 L⊙ at z ∼1. The morphology of PAH galaxies does not show any clear signatures of major merging or interaction within the MIRI resolution. The majority of them are on the star-formation main sequence at z ∼ 1. Our result demonstrates that JWST can detect PAH emissions from normal star-forming galaxies at z ∼ 1, in addition to ultra-luminous infrared galaxies or luminous IR galaxies (LIRGs). Accurate estimation of photometric redshifts (photo- z) is crucial in studies of both galaxy evolution and cosmology using current and future large sky surveys. In this study, we employ Random Forest (RF), a machine learning algorithm, to estimate photo- z and investigate the systematic uncertainties affecting the results. Using galaxy flux and colour as input features, we construct a mapping between input features and redshift by using a training set of simulated data, generated from the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys (HST-ACS) and COSMOS catalogue, with the expected instrumental effects of the planned China Space Station Telescope (CSST). To improve the accuracy and confidence of predictions, we incorporate inverse variance weighting and perturb the catalogue using input feature errors. Our results show that weighted RF can achieve a photo- z accuracy of |$\rm \sigma _{NMAD}=0.025$| and an outlier fraction of |$\rm \eta =2.045\ \hbox{per cent}$|⁠ , significantly better than the values of |$\rm \sigma _{NMAD}=0.043$| and |$\rm \eta =6.45\ \hbox{per cent}$| obtained by the widely used Easy and Accurate Zphot from Yale (EAZY) software, which uses template-fitting method. Furthermore, we have calculated the importance of each input feature for different redshift ranges and found that the most important input features reflect the approximate position of the break features in galaxy spectra, demonstrating the algorithm's ability to extract physical information from data. Additionally, we have established confidence indices and error bars for each prediction value based on the shape of the redshift probability distribution function, suggesting that screening sources with high confidence can further reduce the outlier fraction. In this paper, we look to analyse the spiral features of grand-design, multiarmed, and flocculent spiral galaxies using deep optical imaging from DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys. We explore the resulting distributions of various characteristics of spiral structure beyond the optical radius, such as the distributions of azimuthal angle, the extent of spiral arms, and of the spiral arm widths for the aforementioned galaxy classes. We also compare the measured properties for isolated galaxies and galaxies in groups and clusters. We find that, on average, compared to multiarmed and flocculent spiral galaxies, the spiral arms of grand-design galaxies exhibit slightly larger azimuthal angles, greater extent, and larger widths in the periphery of the galaxy. Furthermore, on average, isolated galaxies tend to have slightly smaller widths of outer spiral arms compared to galaxies in tight environments, which is likely related to the tidally induced mechanism for generating wider outer spiral arms. We report the discovery of 40 new satellite dwarf galaxy candidates in the sphere of influence of the Sombrero Galaxy (M104), the most luminous galaxy in the Local Volume. Using the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam, we surveyed 14.4 deg2 of its surroundings, extending to the virial radius. Visual inspection of the deep images and galfit modelling yielded a galaxy sample highly complete down to Mg ∼ −9 (⁠|$L_{g}\sim 3\times 10^{5}\ \mathrm{ L}_\odot$|⁠) and spanning magnitudes −16.4 < Mg < −8 and half-light radii 50 pc < r e < 1600 pc assuming the distance of M104. These 40 new candidates, out of which 27 are group members with high confidence, double the number of potential satellites of M104 within the virial radius, placing it among the richest hosts in the Local Volume. Using a principal component analysis, we find that the entire sample of candidates is consistent with an almost circular on-sky distribution, more circular than any comparable environment found in the Illustris TNG100-1 (The Next Generation) simulation. However, the distribution of the high-probability sample is more oblate and consistent with the simulation. The cumulative satellite luminosity function is broadly consistent with analogues from the simulation, albeit it contains no bright satellite with Mg < −16.4 (⁠|$L_{g}\sim 3 \times 10^{8}\ \mathrm{ L}_\odot$|⁠), a |$2.3\, \sigma$| occurrence. Using the First Light And Reionisation Epoch Simulations, a suite of hydrodynamical simulations, we explore the consequences of a realistic model for star–dust geometry on the observed properties of galaxies. We find that the ultraviolet (UV) attenuation declines rapidly from the central regions of galaxies, and bright galaxies have spatially extended star formation that suffers less obscuration than their fainter counterparts, demonstrating a non-linear relationship between the UV luminosity and the UV attenuation, giving a double power-law shape to the UVLF. Spatially distinct stellar populations within galaxies experience a wide range of dust attenuation due to variations in the dust optical depth along their line of sight, which can range from completely dust obscured to being fully unobscured. The overall attenuation curve of a galaxy is then a complex combination of various lines of sight within the galaxy. We explore the manifestation of this effect to study the reliability of line ratios to infer galaxy properties, in particular, the Balmer decrement and the Baldwin, Phillips, and Terlevich (BPT) diagram. We find the Balmer decrement predicted Balmer-line attenuation to be higher (factor of 1 to ≳ 10) than expected from commonly used attenuation curves. The observed BPT line ratios deviate from their intrinsic values [median difference of 0.08 (0.02) and standard deviation of 0.2 (0.05) for log10([N |${\small II}]\lambda 6585/$| Hα) (log10([O  iii ]λ5008/Hβ)]. Finally, we explore the variation in observed properties (UV attenuation, UV slope, and Balmer decrement) with viewing angle, finding average differences of ∼0.3 mag in the UV attenuation. At fixed galaxy stellar mass, there is a clear observational connection between structural asymmetry and offset from the star-forming main sequence, ΔSFMS. Herein, we use the TNG50 simulation to investigate the relative roles of major mergers (stellar mass ratios μ ≥ 0.25), minor (0.1 ≤ μ < 0.25), and mini mergers (0.01 ≤ μ < 0.1) in driving this connection amongst star-forming galaxies (SFGs). We use dust radiative transfer post-processing with SKIRT to make a large, public collection of synthetic Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) images of simulated IllustrisTNG (TNG) galaxies over 0.1 ≤ z ≤ 0.7 with log (M ⋆/M⊙) ≥ 9 (∼750 k images). Using their instantaneous star formation rates (SFRs), known merger histories/forecasts, and HSC-SSP asymmetries, we show (1) that TNG50 SFGs qualitatively reproduce the observed trend between ΔSFMS and asymmetry and (2) a strikingly similar trend emerges between ΔSFMS and the time-to-coalescence for mini mergers. Controlling for redshift, stellar mass, environment, and gas fraction, we show that individual mini merger events yield small enhancements in SFRs and asymmetries that are sustained on long time-scales (at least ∼3 Gyr after coalescence, on average) – in contrast to major/minor merger remnants which peak at much greater amplitudes but are consistent with controls only ∼1 Gyr after coalescence. Integrating the boosts in SFRs and asymmetries driven by μ ≥ 0.01 mergers since z  = 0.7 in TNG50 SFGs, we show that mini mergers are responsible for (i) 55 per cent of all merger-driven star formation and (ii) 70 per cent of merger-driven asymmetric structure. We analyzed the deconvolved surface brightness profiles of 247 massive and angularly large disk galaxies at 1 ≤ z ≤ 3 to study high-redshift disk breaks, using F356W-band images from the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science survey (CEERS). We found that 12.6% of these galaxies exhibit type I (exponential) profiles, 56.7% exhibit type II (down-bending) profiles, and 34.8% exhibit type III (up-bending) profiles. Moreover, we showed that galaxies that are more massive, centrally concentrated, or redder, tend to show fewer type II and more type III breaks. These fractions and the detected dependencies on galaxy properties are in good agreement with those observed in the Local Universe. In particular, the ratio of the type II disk break radius to the bar radius in barred galaxies typically peaks at a value of 2.25, perhaps due to bar-induced radial migration. However, the timescale for secular evolution may be too lengthy to explain the observed breaks at such high redshifts. Instead, violent disk instabilities may be responsible, where spiral arms and clumps torque fling out the material, leading to the formation of outer exponential disks. Context. The location of the Solar System complicates the detection extragalactic sources beyond the Milky Way plane. The optical observations are hampered in the so-called zone of avoidance (ZOA), where stellar crowding and Galactic absorption are severe. Observations at longer wavelengths are needed in order to discover new background galaxies and complete the census in the ZOA. Aims. The goal of this work is to identify galaxies behind the Milky Way bulge using near-infrared (NIR) data from the VISTA Variables in Vía Láctea (VVV) survey. Methods. To this end, we made use of different VISTA Science Archive (VSA) tools in order to extract relevant information from more than 32 billion catalogued sources in the VVV bulge region. We find that initial photometric restriction on sources from the VSA vvvSource table combined with restrictions on star–galaxy separation parameters obtained from Source Extractor is a successful strategy for achieving acceptable levels of contamination (60%) and high completeness (75%) in the construction of a galaxy target sample. To remove contaminating Galactic sources from the initial target sample, our methodology also incorporates a visual inspection of false-colour RGB images, a crucial quality control carried out following a specifically defined procedure. Results. Under this methodology, we find 14 480 galaxy candidates in the VVV bulge region, making this sample the largest catalogue to date in the ZOA. Moreover, these new sources provide a fresh picture of the Universe hidden behind the curtain of stars, dust, and gas in the unexplored Milky Way bulge region. Conclusions. The results from this work further demonstrate the potential of the VVV/VVVX survey to find and study a large number of galaxies and extragalactic structures obscured by the Milky Way, expanding our knowledge of the Universe in this challenging and impressive region of the sky. The recent reported discovery of a low-mass z  = 5.2 and an intermediate-mass z  = 7.3 quenched galaxy with JWST/NIRSpec is the first evidence of halted star formation above z ≈ 5. Here, we show how bursty star formation at z  = 4–8 gives rise to temporarily quenched, or mini-quenched galaxies in the mass range M ⋆ = 107–109 M⊙ using four models of galaxy formation: the periodic box simulation IllustrisTNG , the zoom-in simulations vela and FirstLight and an empirical halo model. The main causes for mini-quenching are stellar feedback, lack of gas accretion onto galaxies, and galaxy–galaxy interactions. The abundance of (mini-)quenched galaxies agrees across the models: the population first appears below z ≈ 8, after which their proportion increases with cosmic time, from ∼0.5–1.0 per cent at z  = 7 to ∼2–4 per cent at z  = 4, corresponding to comoving number densities of ∼10−5 and ∼10−3 Mpc−3, respectively. These numbers are consistent with star formation rate duty cycles inferred for vela and FirstLight galaxies. Their star formation histories (SFHs) suggest that mini-quenching at z  = 4–8 is short-lived with a duration of ∼20–40 Myr, which is close to the free-fall time-scale of the inner halo. However, mock spectral energy distributions of mini-quenched galaxies in IllustrisTNG and vela do not match JADES-GS-z7-01-QU photometry, unless their SFHs are artificially altered to be more bursty on time-scales of ∼40 Myr. Studying mini-quenched galaxies might aid in calibrating sub-grid models governing galaxy formation, as these may not generate sufficient burstiness at high redshift to explain the SFH inferred for JADES-GS-z7-01-QU. The Magellanic Clouds are the most massive and closest satellite galaxies of the Milky Way (MW), with stars covering ages from a few Myr up to 13 Gyr. This makes them important for validating integrated light methods to study stellar populations and star formation processes, which can be applied to more distant galaxies. We characterized a set of stellar clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), using the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey. This is the first age (metallicity) determination for 11 (65) clusters of this sample. Through its seven narrow bands, centred on important spectral features, and five broad bands, we can retrieve detailed information about stellar populations. We obtained ages and metallicities for all stellar clusters using the Bayesian spectral energy distribution fitting code bagpipes. With a sample of clusters in the colour range −0.20 < r − z < +0.35, for which our determined parameters are most reliable, we modeled the age–metallicity relation of SMC. At any given age, the metallicities of SMC clusters are lower than those of both the Gaia Sausage-Enceladus disrupted dwarf galaxy and the MW. In comparison with literature values, differences are Δlog(age) ≈ 0.31 and Δ[Fe/H] ≈ 0.41, which is comparable to low-resolution spectroscopy of individual stars. Finally, we confirm a previously known gradient, with younger clusters in the centre and older ones preferentially located in the outermost regions. We present wide-field, deep K -band photometry of 98 luminous early-type galaxies (ETGs) from the MASSIVE survey based on observations taken with the WIRCam instrument on the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope. Using these images, we extract accurate total K -band luminosities (LK) and half-light radii (Re) for this sample of galaxies. We use these new values to explore the size–luminosity and Faber–Jackson relations for massive ETGs. Within this volume-limited sample, we find clear evidence for curvature in both relations, indicating that the most luminous galaxies tend to have larger sizes and smaller velocity dispersions than expected from a simple power-law fit to less luminous galaxies. Our measured relations are qualitatively consistent with the most massive elliptical galaxies forming largely through dissipationless mergers. When the sample is separated into fast and slow rotators, we find the slow rotators to exhibit similar changes in slope with increasing LK , suggesting that low-mass and high-mass slow rotators have different formation histories. The curvatures in the Re – LK and σ– LK relations cancel, leading to a relation between dynamical mass and luminosity that is well described by a single power law: Re σ2 ∝  LK b with b ≈ 1.2. Groups of galaxies are the intermediate density environment in which much of the evolution of galaxies is thought to take place. In spectroscopic redshift surveys, one can identify these as close spatial-redshift associations. However, spectroscopic surveys will always be more limited in luminosity and completeness than imaging ones. Here, we combine the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) group catalogue with the extended Satellites Around Galactic Analogues (xSAGA) catalogue of machine learning identified low-redshift satellite galaxies. We find 1825 xSAGA galaxies within the bounds of the GAMA equatorial fields (m r < 21), 1562 of which could have a counterpart in the GAMA spectroscopic catalogue (m r < 19.8). Of these, 1326 do have a GAMA counterpart with 974 below z  = 0.03 (true positives) and 352 above z  = 0.03 (false positives). By cross-correlating the GAMA group catalogue with the xSAGA catalogue, we can extend and characterize the satellite content of GAMA galaxy groups. We find that most groups have <5 xSAGA galaxies associated with them, but richer groups may have more. Each additional xSAGA galaxy contributes only a small fraction of the group's total stellar mass (⁠|${\ll}10$|  per cent). Selecting GAMA groups that resemble the Milky Way halo, with a few (<4) bright galaxies, we find that xSAGA can add a magnitude fainter sources to a group and that the Local Group does not stand out in the number of bright satellites. Compact disc galaxies (CDGs) with high-surface brightness were identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data. We determined the surface profiles of the CDGs and compared them to those of normal-sized disc galaxies (NDGs). The CDGs have higher central brightness and older stellar age than the NDGs. Furthermore, the brightness profiles of the CDGs fit a Sérsic model with n ≈ 2.11 and have a zero g ′ − r ′ colour gradient on average. By contrast, the NDGs fit an exponential profile and have a negative colour gradient on average. These results indicate that the structure and stellar population of the CDGs and NDGs differ. We suggest that the CDGs are ancient galaxies in the quenching phase following the initial central starburst. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
