We describe a bigraded cocommutative Hopf algebra structure on the weight zero compactly supported rational cohomology of the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties. By relating the primitives for the coproduct to graph cohomology, we deduce that $\dim H^{2g+k}_c(\mathcal{A}_g)$ grows at least exponentially with $g$ for $k = 0$ and for all but finitely many positive integers $k$. Our proof relies on a new result of independent interest; we use a filtered variant of the Waldhausen construction to show that Quillen's spectral sequence abutting to the cohomology of $BK(\mathbb{Z})$ is a spectral sequence of Hopf algebras. From the same construction, we also deduce that $\dim H^{\binom{n}{2} - n - k}(\mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb{Z}))$ grows at least exponentially with $n$, for $k = -1$ and for all but finitely many non-negative integers $k$., Comment: v2: 87 pages. We study a symplectic variant of algebraic $K$-theory of the integers, which comes equipped with a canonical action of the absolute Galois group of $\mathbf{Q}$. We compute this action explicitly. The representations we see are extensions of Tate twists $\mathbf{Z}_p(2k-1)$ by a trivial representation, and we characterize them by a universal property among such extensions. We study the general linear groups of infinite fields (or more generally connected semi-local rings with infinite residue fields) from the perspective of $E_\infty$-algebras. We prove that there is a vanishing line of slope 2 for their $E_\infty$-homology, and analyse the groups on this line by determining all invariant bilinear forms on Steinberg modules. We deduce from this a number of consequences regarding the unstable homology of general linear groups, in particular answering questions of Rognes, Suslin, Mirzaii, and others., Comment: 84 pages; v2 minor revision

We construct certain operations on stable moduli spaces and use them to compare cohomology of moduli spaces of closed manifolds with tangential structure. Four lectures on invertible field theories at the Park City Mathematics Institute 2019. Cobordism categories are introduced both as plain categories and topologically enriched. We then discuss localization of categories and its relationship to classifying spaces, and state the main theorem of classification of invertible field theories in these terms. We also discuss symmetric monoidal structures and their relationship to actions of the little disk operads. In the final lecture we discuss an application of cobordism categories to characteristic classes of surface bundles. Emphasis will be on self-contained definitions and statements, referring to original literature for proofs. We study a space of genus $g$ stable, $n$-marked tropical curves with total edge length $1$. Its rational homology is identified both with top-weight cohomology of the complex moduli space $M_{g,n}$ and with the homology of a marked version of Kontsevich's graph complex, up to a shift in degrees. We prove a contractibility criterion that applies to various large subspaces. From this we derive a description of the homotopy type of the tropical moduli space for $g = 1$, the top weight cohomology of $M_{1,n}$ as an $S_n$-representation, and additional calculations for small $(g,n)$. We prove new homological stability results for general linear groups over finite fields. These results are obtained by constructing CW approximations to the classifying spaces of these groups, in the category of $E_\infty$-algebras, guided by computations of homology with coefficients in the $E_1$-split Steinberg module.

For a finite group $G$, we define an equivariant cobordism category $\mathcal{C}_d^G$. Objects of the category are $(d-1)$-dimensional closed smooth $G$-manifolds and morphisms are smooth $d$-dimensional equivariant cobordisms. We study the topology of a space parametrizing stable tropical curves of genus g with volume 1, showing that its reduced rational homology is canonically identified with both the top weight cohomology of M_g and also with the genus g part of the homology of Kontsevich's graph complex. Using a theorem of Willwacher relating this graph complex to the Grothendieck-Teichmueller Lie algebra, we deduce that H^{4g-6}(M_g;Q) is nonzero for g=3, g=5, and g at least 7. This disproves a recent conjecture of Church, Farb, and Putman as well as an older, more general conjecture of Kontsevich. We prove a new kind of stabilisation result, "secondary homological stability", for the homology of mapping class groups of orientable surfaces with one boundary component. We give a set of foundations for cellular $E_k$-algebras which are especially convenient for applications to homological stability. We define a derived version of Mazur's Galois deformation ring. It is a pro-simplicial ring $\mathcal{R}$ classifying deformations of a fixed Galois representation to simplicial coefficient rings; its zeroth homotopy group $\pi_0 \mathcal{R}$ recovers Mazur's deformation ring. We give evidence that these rings $\mathcal{R}$ occur in the wild: For suitable Galois representations, the Langlands program predicts that $\pi_0 \mathcal{R}$ should act on the homology of an arithmetic group. We explain how the Taylor--Wiles method can be used to upgrade such an action to a graded action of $\pi_* \mathcal{R}$ on the homology., Comment: This is the submitted version. We study the topology of the tropical moduli space parametrizing stable tropical curves of genus g with n marked points in which the bounded edges have total length 1, and prove that it is highly connected. Using the identification of this space with the dual complex of the boundary in the moduli space of stable algebraic curves, we give a simple expression for the top weight cohomology of M_{1,n} as a representation of the symmetric group and describe an explicit dual basis in homology consisting of abelian cycles for the pure mapping class group., Comment: v2: 48 pages. We prove a homological stability theorem for moduli spaces of manifolds of dimension $2n$, for attaching handles of index at least $n$, after these manifolds have been stabilised by countably many copies of $S^n \times S^n$. We study tautological rings for high dimensional manifolds, that is, for each smooth manifold $M$ the ring $R^*(M)$ of those of characteristic classes of smooth fibre bundles with fibre $M$ which is generated by generalised Miller--Morita--Mumford classes. We completely describe these rings modulo nilpotent elements, when $M$ is a connected sum of copies of $S^n \times S^n$ for $n$ odd., Comment: 16 pages

We compute the abelianisations of the mapping class groups of the manifolds $W_g^{2n} = g(S^n \times S^n)$ for $n \geq 3$ and $g \geq 5$. The answer is a direct sum of two parts. The first part arises from the action of the mapping class group on the middle homology, and takes values in the abelianisation of the automorphism group of the middle homology. The second part arises from bordism classes of mapping cylinders and takes values in the quotient of the stable homotopy groups of spheres by a certain subgroup which in many cases agrees with the image of the stable $J$-homomorphism. We apply our earlier work on the higher-dimensional analogue of the Mumford conjecture to two questions. Inspired by work of Ebert we prove non-triviality of certain characteristic classes of bundles of smooth closed manifolds. We prove an analogue of the Madsen-Weiss theorem for high dimensional manifolds. For example, we explicitly describe the ring of characteristic classes of smooth fibre bundles whose fibres are connected sums of g copies of S^n x S^n, in the limit as g tends to infinity. Rationally it is a polynomial ring in certain explicit generators, giving a high dimensional analogue of Mumford's conjecture. More generally, we study a moduli space N(P) of those null-bordisms of a fixed (2n-1)-dimensional manifold P which are highly connected relative to P. We determine the homology of N(P) after stabilisation using certain self-bordisms of P. We give an alternative proof of Madsen-Weiss' generalized Mumford conjecture. Our proof is based on ideas similar to Madsen-Weiss' original proof, but it is more geometrical and less homotopy theoretical in nature. We study categories of d-dimensional cobordisms from the perspective of Tillmann and Galatius-Madsen-Tillmann-Weiss. There is a category $C_\theta$ of closed smooth (d-1)-manifolds and smooth d-dimensional cobordisms, equipped with generalised orientations specified by a fibration $\theta : X \to BO(d)$. The main result of GMTW is a determination of the homotopy type of the classifying space $BC_\theta$. The goal of the present paper is a systematic investigation of subcategories $D$ of $C_\theta$ having classifying space homotopy equivalent to that of $C_\theta$, the smaller such $D$ the better. We prove that in most cases of interest, $D$ can be chosen to be a homotopy commutative monoid. As a consequence we prove that the stable cohomology of many moduli spaces of surfaces with $\theta$-structure is the cohomology of the infinite loop space of a certain Thom spectrum. Given a semisimple, compact, connected Lie group G with complexification G^c, we show there is a stable range in the homotopy type of the universal moduli space of flat connections on a principal G-bundle on a closed Riemann surface, and equivalently, the universal moduli space of semistable holomorphic G^c-bundles. The stable range depends on the genus of the surface. We then identify the homology of this moduli space in the stable range in terms of the homology of an explicit infinite loop space. Rationally this says that the stable cohomology of this moduli space is generated by the Mumford-Morita-Miller kappa-classes, and the ring of characteristic classes of principal G-bundles, H^*(BG). We then identify the homotopy type of the category of one-manifolds and surface cobordisms, each equipped with a flat G-bundle. We also explain how these results may be generalized to arbitrary compact connected Lie groups. Our methods combine the classical techniques of Atiyah and Bott, with the new techniques coming out of Madsen and Weiss's proof of Mumford's conjecture on the stable cohomology of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces., Comment: 22 pages
