1. Ternary superhydrides under pressure of Anderson's theorem: Near-record superconductivity in (La,Sc)H$_{12}$

Abstract

Lanthanum-hydrogen system and its derivatives remain among the most promising for achieving room-temperature superconductivity. In this study, we examined the formation of ternary lanthanum-scandium superhydrides at pressures up to 220 GPa. The primary product of the LaSc alloy's reaction with hydrogen is newly discovered cubic (La,Sc)H$_{12}$, demonstrating clear superconducting transition in all six channels of the van der Pauw scheme below 244-248 K. In this compound with an unusually large unit cell volume, virtually no magnetoresistance was observed in fields up to 68 Tesla. Synthesized samples of (La,Sc)H$_{12}$ demonstrate pronounced superconducting diode and SQUID-like effects at a record high temperature of 233 K. Furthermore, our analysis revealed the formation of lower hexagonal polyhydrides (La,Sc)H$_{6-7}$, which could potentially account for the anomaly in electrical resistance observed near 274 K. Abstract

We proposed a new method for synthesis of metal polyhydrides via high-pressure thermal decomposition of corresponding amidoboranes in diamond anvil cells. Within this approach, we synthesized molecular semiconducting cesium ($\textit P4/nmm$-CsH$_7$, $\textit P$1-CsH$_{15+x}$) and rubidium (RbH$_{9-x}$) polyhydrides with a very high hydrogen content reaching 93 at%. Preservation of CsH$_7$ at near ambient conditions, confirmed both experimentally and theoretically, represents a significant advance in the stabilization of hydrogen-rich compounds. In addition, we synthesized two crystal modifications of RbH$_{9-x}$ with pseudo hexagonal and pseudo tetragonal structures identified by synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman measurements. Both phases are stable at 8-10 GPa. This is an unprecedented low stabilization pressure for polyhydrides. These discoveries open up possibilities for modifying existing hydrogen storage materials to increase their efficiency.

Abstract

Polyhydrides are a novel class of superconducting materials with extremely high critical parameters, which is very promising for applications. On the other hand, complete experimental study of the magnetic phase diagram for the best so far known superconductor, lanthanum decahydride LaH$_{10}$, encounters a serious complication because of the large upper critical magnetic field $\textit{H}$$_{C2}$(0), exceeding 120-160 T. Partial replacement of La atoms by magnetic Nd atoms results in a decrease of the upper critical field, which makes it attainable for existing pulse magnets. We found that addition of neodymium leads to significant suppression of superconductivity in LaH$_{10}$: each atomic % of Nd causes decrease in $\textit{T}$$_{C}$ by 10-11 K. Using strong pulsed magnetic fields up to 68 T, we constructed the magnetic phase diagram of the ternary (La,Nd)H$_{10}$ superhydride, which appears to be surprisingly linear with $\textit{H}$$_{C2}$ $\propto$ |$\textit{T}$ - $\textit{T}$$_C$|. The pronounced suppression of superconductivity in LaH$_{10}$ by magnetic Nd atoms and the robustness of $\textit{T}$$_C$ with respect to nonmagnetic impurities (e.g., Y, Al, C) under Anderson's theorem indicate the isotropic ($\textit{s}$-wave) character of conventional electron-phonon pairing in the synthesized superhydrides., Comment: Supporting Information is included

Abstract

Recently, several research groups announced reaching the point of metallization of hydrogen above 400 GPa. Following the mainstream of extensive investigations of compressed polyhydrides, in this work we demonstrate that small (4 atom %) doping of molecular hydrogen by strontium leads to a dramatic reduction in the metallization pressure to about 200 GPa. Studying the high-pressure chemistry of the Sr-H system at 56-180 GPa, we observed the formation of several previously unknown compounds: C2/m-Sr$_3$H$_{13}$, pseudocubic SrH$_6$, SrH$_9$ with cubic F-43m Sr sublattice, and pseudotetragonal P1-SrH$_{22}$, the metal hydride with the highest hydrogen content discovered so far. Unlike Ca and Y, strontium forms molecular semiconducting polyhydrides, whereas calcium and yttrium polyhydrides are high-Tc superconductors with an atomic H sublattice. The latter phase, SrH$_{22}$ or Sr$_{0.04}$H$_{0.96}$, may be considered as a convenient model of the consistent bandgap closure and metallization of hydrogen. Using the impedance measurements in diamond anvil cells at 300-440 K, we estimated the direct bandgap of the Pm-3n-like compound P1-SrH$_6$ to be 0.44-0.51 eV at 150 GPa, and its metallization pressure to be 220 GPa. Together with the machine learning interatomic potentials, the impedance spectroscopy allowed us to estimate the diffusion coefficients of hydrogen D$_H$ = 1.0-2.8 E-10 m$^2$/s in SrH$_6$ and 1.2-2.1 E-9 m$^2$/s in P1-SrH$_{22}$ at 500-600 K., Comment: Supporting information was compressed and reduced by 2 times to 36 figures

Abstract

We conducted a joint experimental-theoretical investigation of the high-pressure chemistry of europium polyhydrides at pressures of 86-130 GPa. We discovered several novel magnetic Eu superhydrides stabilized by anharmonic effects: cubic $EuH_{9}$, hexagonal $EuH_{9}$, and an unexpected cubic (Pm-3n) clathrate phase, $Eu_{8}H_{46}$. Monte Carlo simulations indicate that cubic $EuH_{9}$ has antiferromagnetic ordering with T(Neel) up to 24 K, whereas hexagonal $EuH_{9}$ and Pm-3n-$Eu_{8}H_{46}$ possess ferromagnetic ordering with T(Curie) = 137 and 336 K, respectively. The electron-phonon interaction is weak in all studied europium hydrides, and their magnetic ordering excludes s-wave superconductivity, except, perhaps, for distorted pseudohexagonal $EuH_{9}$. The equations of state predicted within the DFT+U approach (the Hubbard corrections were found within linear response theory) are in close agreement with the experimental data. This work shows the great influence of the atomic radius on symmetry-breaking distortions of the crystal structures of superhydrides and on their thermodynamic stability.

Abstract

Following the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in the La-H system, where for the recently discovered fcc-LaH10 a record critical temperature Tc = 250 K was achieved [Drozdov et al., Nature, 569, 528 (2019) and Somayazulu et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 027001 (2019)], we studied the formation of new chemical compounds in the barium-hydrogen system at pressures up to 173 GPa. Using in situ generation of hydrogen from NH3BH3, we synthesized previously unknown superhydride BaH12 with a pseudocubic (fcc) Ba sublattice, which was observed in a wide range of pressures from 75 to 173 GPa in four independent experiments. DFT calculations indicate a close agreement between the theoretical and experimental equations of state. In addition to BaH12, we identified previously known P6/mmm BaH2 and possibly BaH10 and BaH6 as impurities in the samples. Ab initio calculations show that newly discovered semimetallic BaH12 contains H2, H3 molecular units and detached H12 chains. Barium dodecahydride is a unique molecular hydride with metallic conductivity which demonstrates a superconducting transition around 20 K at 140 GPa in agreement with calculations (19-32 K). The interpretation of the multiphase XRD data was possible thanks to the development of new Python scripts for postprocessing the results of evolutionary searches. Abstract

The current search for room-temperature superconductivity is inspired by the unique properties of the electron-phonon interaction in metal superhydrides. Encouraged by the recently found highest-$T_C$ superconductor fcc-$LaH_{10}$, here we discover several superhydrides of another lanthanide - neodymium. We identify three novel metallic Nd-H phases at pressure range from 85 to 135 GPa: $I4/mmm$-$NdH_4$, $C2/c$-$NdH_7$, $P6_3/mmc$-$NdH_9$, synthesized by laser-heating metal samples in NH3BH3 media for in situ generation of hydrogen. A lower trihydride $Fm\bar{3}m$-$NdH_3$ is found at pressures from 2 to 52 GPa. $I4/mmm$-$NdH_4$ and $C2/c$-$NdH_7$ are stable from 135 down to 85 GPa, and $P6_3/mmc$-$NdH_9$ from 110 to 130 GPa. Measurements of the electrical resistance of NdH9 demonstrate a possible superconducting transition at ~4.5 K in $P6_3/mmc$-$NdH_9$. Our theoretical calculations predict that all the neodymium hydrides have antiferromagnetic order at pressures below 150 GPa and represent one of the first discovered examples of strongly correlated superhydrides with large exchange spin-splitting in the electron band structure (> 450 meV). Abstract

The growing awareness of tricuspid regurgitation (TR) and the fast-expanding array of devices aiming to percutaneously repair or replace the tricuspid valve have underscored the central role of multi-modality imaging in comprehensively assessing the anatomical and functional characteristics of TR. Accurate phenotyping of TR, the right heart, and pulmonary vasculature via echocardiography, computed tomography, and, occasionally, cardiovascular magnetic resonance and right heart catheterization is deemed crucial in choosing the most suitable treatment strategy for each patient and achieving procedural success. In the first part of the present review, key imaging factors for patient selection will be discussed. In the ensuing sections, an overview of the most commonly used, commercially available systems for transcatheter repair/replacement will be presented, along with their respective selection criteria and information on intraprocedural imaging guidance; these are edge-to-edge repair, orthotopic and heterotopic replacement, and valve-in-valve procedures. Abstract

Background: Few certainties exist regarding optimal management of Blood Pressure (BP) in the very first hours after an ischemic stroke and many questions remain still unanswered. Our work aimed to evaluate the role of BP and its trend as possible determinants of in-hospital mortality (primary outcome), discharge disabilities and hospitalization length (secondary outcomes) in ischemic stroke patients presented with Hypertensive Emergencies (HE). Methods: We retrospectively evaluated patients presented to Niguarda Hospital, Emergency Department (ED), from 2015 to 2017 with a neurological ischemic HE. BP at ED presentation (T0), its management in ED (T1) and its values at the stroke unit admission (T2) were evaluated. Results: 267 patients were included (0.13 % of all ED accesses and 17.9 % of all ischemic strokes). In the whole population, BP values were not associated with in-hospital mortality while T0 and T2 SBP result were associated to discharge disability and hospitalization length. In pre-specified subgroup analysis these associations were confirmed only in untreated subjects (not anti-hypertensive nor thrombolysis). In fact, no significant relationship can be found between BP values and any secondary outcome in thrombolysis and anti-hypertensive treated patients. Conclusions: BP values and its management can not be related to in-hospital mortality in stroke patients, presented with HE, while they are associated to discharge disability and hospitalization length. In subgroup analysis, results were confirmed only in untreated (not anti-hypertensive therapies nor thrombolytic).

Abstract

Aims: The mortality risk of patients with moderate aortic stenosis is not well known, but recent studies suggested that it might negatively affect prognosis. We aimed to assess the natural history and clinical burden of moderate aortic stenosis and to investigate the interaction of patients' baseline characteristics with prognosis. Methods: Systematic research was conducted on PubMed. The inclusion criteria were inclusion of patients with moderate aortic stenosis; and report of the survival at 1-year follow-up (minimum). Incidence ratios related to all-cause mortality in patients and controls of each study were estimated and then pooled using a fixed effects model. All patients with mild aortic stenosis or without aortic stenosis were considered controls. Meta-regression analysis was performed to assess the impact of left ventricular ejection fraction and age on the prognosis of patients with moderate aortic stenosis. Results: Fifteen studies and 11 596 patients with moderate aortic stenosis were included. All-cause mortality was significantly higher among patients with moderate aortic stenosis than in controls in all timeframes analysed (all P < 0.0001). Left ventricular ejection fraction and sex did not significantly impact on the prognosis of patients with moderate aortic stenosis (P = 0.4584 and P = 0.5792), while increasing age showed a significant interaction with mortality (estimate = 0.0067; 95% confidence interval: 0.0007-0.0127; P = 0.0323). Conclusion: Moderate aortic stenosis is associated with reduced survival. Further studies are necessary to confirm the prognostic impact of this valvulopathy and the possible benefit of aortic valve replacement.

Abstract

Atherosclerosis is a chronic and progressive inflammatory process beginning early in life with late clinical manifestation. This slow pathological trend underlines the importance to early identify high-risk patients and to treat intensively risk factors to prevent the onset and/or the progression of atherosclerotic lesions. In addition to the common Cardiovascular (CV) risk factors, new markers able to increase the risk of CV disease have been identified. Among them, high levels of Lipoprotein(a)—Lp(a)—lead to very high risk of future CV diseases; this relationship has been well demonstrated in epidemiological, mendelian randomization and genome-wide association studies as well as in meta-analyses. Recently, new aspects have been identified, such as its association with aortic stenosis. Although till recent years it has been considered an unmodifiable risk factor, specific drugs have been developed with a strong efficacy in reducing the circulating levels of Lp(a) and their capacity to reduce subsequent CV events is under testing in ongoing trials. In this paper we will review all these aspects: from the synthesis, clearance and measurement of Lp(a), through the findings that examine its association with CV diseases and aortic stenosis to the new therapeutic options that will be available in the next years.

Abstract

Recently, several research groups announced reaching the point of metallization of hydrogen above 400 GPa. Despite notable progress, detecting superconductivity in compressed hydrogen remains an unsolved problem. Following the mainstream of extensive investigations of compressed metal polyhydrides, here small doping of molecular hydrogen by strontium is demonstrated to lead to a dramatic reduction in the metallization pressure to ≈200 GPa. Studying the high-pressure chemistry of the Sr–H system, the formation of several new phases is observed: C2/m-Sr3H13, pseudocubic SrH6, SrH9 with cubic F43m-Sr sublattice, and pseudo tetragonal superionic P1-SrH22, the metal hydride with the highest hydrogen content (96 at%) discovered so far. High diffusion coefficients of hydrogen in the latter phase DH = 0.2–2.1 × 10−9 m2 s−1 indicate an amorphous state of the H-sublattice, whereas the strontium sublattice remains solid. Unlike Ca and Y, strontium forms molecular semiconducting polyhydrides, whereas calcium and yttrium polyhydrides are high-TC superconductors with an atomic H sublattice. The discovered SrH22, a kind of hydrogen sponge, opens a new class of materials with ultrahigh content of hydrogen.

Abstract

Ongoing search for room-temperature superconductivity is inspired by the unique properties of the electron-phonon interaction in metal superhydrides. Encouraged by the recently found highest-T-C superconductor fcc-LaH10, here we discover several superhydrides of another lanthanoid, neodymium. We identify three novel metallic Nd-H phases at pressures ranging from 85 to 135 GPa: I4/mmm-NdH4, C2/c-NdH7 , and P6(3)/mmc-NdH9, synthesized by laser-heating metal samples in NH3BH3 media for in situ generation of hydrogen. A lower trihydride Fm (3) over barm-NdH3 is found at pressures from 2 to 52 GPa. I4/mmm-NdH4 and C2/c-NdH7 are stable from 135 to 85 GPa, and P6(3) /mmc-NdH9 is stable from 110 to 130 GPa. Measurements of the electrical resistance of NdH9 demonstrate a possible superconducting transition at similar to 4.5 K in P6(3)/mmc-NdH9. Our theoretical calculations predict that all of the neodymium hydrides have antiferromagnetic order at pressures below 150 GPa and represent one of the first discovered examples of strongly correlated superhydrides with large exchange spin-splitting in the electronic band structure (>450 meV). The critical Neel temperatures for new neodymium hydrides are estimated using the mean-field approximation to be about 4 K (NdH4), 251 K (NdH7), and 136 K (NdH9).

Abstract

Atherosclerosis is a chronic and progressive inflammatory process beginning early in life with late clinical manifestation. This slow pathological trend underlines the importance to early identify high-risk patients and to treat intensively risk factors to prevent the onset and/or the progression of atherosclerotic lesions. In addition to the common Cardiovascular (CV) risk factors, new markers able to increase the risk of CV disease have been identified. Among them, high levels of Lipoprotein(a)—Lp(a)—lead to very high risk of future CV diseases; this relationship has been well demonstrated in epidemiological, mendelian randomization and genome-wide association studies as well as in meta-analyses. Recently, new aspects have been identified, such as its association with aortic stenosis. Although till recent years it has been considered an unmodifiable risk factor, specific drugs have been developed with a strong efficacy in reducing the circulating levels of Lp(a) and their capacity to reduce subsequent CV events is under testing in ongoing trials. In this paper we will review all these aspects: from the synthesis, clearance and measurement of Lp(a), through the findings that examine its association with CV diseases and aortic stenosis to the new therapeutic options that will be available in the next years. Abstract

Myocardial contusion is a rare and potentially fatal complication of chest trauma. There is no unique definition for this entity: some authors define myocardial contusion as a mild increase in cardiac biomarkers in the context of chest trauma, while for others the diagnosis requires evidence of pathologic findings at cardiac imaging. Consequently, the real incidence of myocardial contusion remains unknown, varying in reports between 8% and 71%. We describe a case of cardiac contusion secondary to a low-energy blunt chest trauma, manifesting as persistent ST-elevation associated with elevation of myocardial necrosis markers, with consequent myocardial stunning of the right ventricular free wall. As there is no consensus regarding the diagnostic pathway, it is essential to integrate first-level exams (ECG and laboratory findings) with cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, to define the presence of cardiac contusion and its extent, particularly if the echocardiographic data are unconclusive.
