Abstract

A homogeneous negative permeability sphere can support magnetic localized surface plasmons (MLSPs). Generally, negative permeability materials are metamaterial (MM) structures exhibiting very deep subwavelength spatial scales, whose effects may be detrimental in the near-field for those applications based on effective medium approximations. We suggest to overcome this fundamental limitation by demonstrating analytically that the electromagnetic spatial distribution, associated to a MLSP resonance and excited by a near-field source, can be accurately reproduced outside the sphere by substituting the negative permeability sphere with a homogeneous high-index dielectric one with the same radius. Considering that a large class of ferroelectric materials shows ultra-high dielectric constant and low-losses at low frequency (up to GHz), our spoof MLSPs theory could be a key tool for realizing high performance subwavelength magnetic photonic devices in the radiofrequency and microwave regions., Comment: submitted to Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics

Abstract

Aliphatic chlorinated hydrocarbons, notably tetrachloroethylene (also known as perchloroethylene [PCE]), are persistent, mobile, and toxic (PMT) and/or very persistent, mobile, and toxic (vPMT) groundwater pollutants, often exceeding safe drinking water thresholds. The present study delves into the groundwater risk assessment of PCE with a novel focus on the sensitivity of stygobitic species—organisms uniquely adapted to groundwater environments. Through a comparative analysis of the subchronic effects of PCE on the locomotion behavior of two copepod species, the stygobitic Moraria sp. and the nonstygobitic Bryocamptus zschokkei, we highlighted the inadequacy of the current European predicted‐no‐effect concentration of PCE for groundwater ecosystems. Our findings indicate significant behavioral impairments in both species at a concentration (32 ng/L PCE) well below the threshold deemed safe, suggesting that the current European guidelines for groundwater risk assessment may not adequately protect the unique biodiversity of groundwater habitats. Importantly, B. zschokkei demonstrated sensitivity to PCE comparable to or greater than that of the target stygobitic species, suggesting its utility as a substitute species in groundwater risk assessment. The present study adds to the limited research on the ecotoxicological sensitivity of groundwater species to PMT/vPMT chemicals and highlights the need for refined groundwater risk‐assessment methodologies that consider the susceptibilities of stygobitic species. Abstract

Truffles of the Tuber genus (Pezizales, Ascomycetes) are among the most valuable and expensive foods, but their shelf life is limited to 7–10 days when stored at 4 °C. Alternative preservation methods have been proposed to extend their shelf life, though they may alter certain quality parameters. Recently, a hypogeal display case equipped with an ultrasonic humidity system (HDC) was developed, extending the shelf life to 2–3 weeks, depending on the truffle species. This study assesses the efficacy of HDC in preserving Tuber melanosporum and Tuber borchii ascomata over 16 days, using quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (QMRI) to monitor water content and other parameters. Sixteen T. melanosporum and six T. borchii ascomata were stored at 4 °C in an HDC or a static fridge (SF) as controls. QMRI confirmed that T. borchii has a shorter shelf life than T. melanosporum under all conditions. HDC reduced the rate of shrinkage, water, and mass loss in both species. Additionally, the Apparent Diffusion Coefficient (ADC), longitudinal relaxation time (T1), and transverse relaxation time (T2), which reflect molecular changes, decreased more slowly in HDC than SF. QMRI proves useful for studying water-rich samples and assessing truffle preservation technologies. Further optimization of this method for industrial use is needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive diagnostic technique able to provide information about the anatomical, structural, and functional properties of different organs. A magnetic resonance (MR) scanner employs radiofrequency (RF) coils to generate a magnetic field to excite the nuclei in the sample (transmit coil) and pick up the signals emitted by the nuclei (receive coil). To avoid trial-and-error approaches and optimize the RF coil performance for a given application, accurate design and simulation processes must be performed. We describe the full-wave simulation of a Helmholtz coil for high-field MRI performed with the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, investigating magnetic field pattern differences between loaded and unloaded conditions. Moreover, the self-inductance of the single loops constituting the Helmholtz coil was estimated, as well as the frequency splitting between loops due to inductive coupling and the sample-induced resistance. The result accuracy was verified with data acquired with a Helmholtz prototype for small phantom experiments with a 3T MR clinical scanner. 11. Phase diagram of QCD with four quark flavors at finite temperature and baryon density

Abstract

We analyze the phase diagram of QCD with four staggered flavors in the (mu, T) plane using a method recently proposed by us. We explore the region T > 0.7 Tc and mu <1.4 Tc, where Tc is the transition temperature at zero baryon density, and find a first order transition line. Our results are quantitatively compatible with those obtained with the imaginary chemical potential approach and the double reweighting method, in the region where these approaches are reliable, T > 0.9 Tc and mu < Tc. But, in addition, our method allows us to extend the transition line to lower temperatures and higher chemical potentials., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures. Comments and new data added. Abstract

The phenomenon of diquark condensation at non-zero baryon density and zero temperature is analyzed in the strong coupling limit of lattice QCD. The results indicate that there is attraction in the quark-quark channel also at strong coupling, and that the attraction is more effective at high baryon density, but for infinite coupling it is not enough to produce diquark condensation. Abstract

We show that an essential assumption in the Vafa and Witten's theorem on P and CT realization in vector-like theories, the existence of a free energy density in Euclidean space in the presence of any external hermitian symmetry breaking source, does not apply if the symmetry is spontaneously broken. The assumption that the free energy density is well defined requires the previous assumption that the symmetry is realized in the vacuum. Abstract

We analyze the phase diagram of compact QED on the torus with a chirally symmetric four fermion interaction added to the usual Wilson action. Inside a mean field approximation for the four fermion term, a line of first order phase transitions and another one of second order are found in the $(\beta, G)$ plane. Approaching the second order line a continuum limit can be defined. Critical exponents vary along this line in a similar way as in the non-compact model, suggesting that a non trivial interacting continuum theory can be constructed., Comment: 11 pages, latex, 1 figure

Abstract

Radiofrequency (RF) surface coils are extensively used as receivers in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) systems thanks to their high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). For specific magnetic resonance applications, the design of dedicated RF surface coils with a transverse (to the coil's plane) RF magnetic field pattern can be necessary. Such transverse-field RF coils are constituted by several central linear (parallel or crossing) conductor elements connected by return current paths. Typically, the outer shape of such RF coils is circular or squared, although other geometries can be used. This paper describes the implementation and validation of a transverse-field RF surface coil simulator based on magnetostatic analysis, which permits the design and optimization of square butterfly and figure-of-eight RF coils with adjustable size and mutual distance between the central linear current elements. The simulation results, compared with the ones provided by a standard square loop RF coil, were validated with 100 MHz workbench measurements performed on three home-built prototypes. Finally, two novel quadrature RF coil structures designed by overlapping two orthogonal square butterfly and figure-of-eight RF coils were simulated and theoretically characterized. The RF coils described here should be suitable for a wide range of MRI/MRS preclinical/clinical applications, mainly at fields below 3 T. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The aim of the present study is the optimization, construction, and workbench validation of a double-tuned 1H- 23Na volume radio frequency (RF) coil suitable for human head imaging at 7 T, based on the birdcage geometry. The birdcage-like design which is considered is the four-ring model, in which two standard birdcage-like structures with the same diameters are nested along the longitudinal axis. Simulations based on Maxwell's equations are performed to evaluate the RF magnetic field homogeneity and the RF coil efficiency varying the coil geometrical parameters. The RF magnetic field homogeneity is evaluated both on the transverse (z = 0) and longitudinal (y = 0) planes without performing the impedance matching procedure, so that the RF coil symmetry is not perturbed by the matching network. The RF coil efficiency is instead dependent on the effective coil input RF power, and it is evaluated after matching the coil, so that the reflected power is minimized, assuming that the stimulation power is totally delivered to the RF coil. Considering the simulation results and the target application, the useful RF coil geometrical parameters are fixed. The four-ring model, which showed the best performances, has been built and tested on a workbench, using a cylindrical phantom filled with a 0.05 M saline solution as load. Abstract

Objectives: American-style football (ASF) athletes are at risk for the development of concentric left ventricular hypertrophy (C-LVH), an established cardiovascular risk factor in the general population. We sought to address whether black race is associated with acquired C-LVH in collegiate ASF athletes.Methods: Collegiate ASF athletes from two National Collegiate Athletic Association Division-I programmes were recruited as freshmen between 2014 and 2019 and analysed over 3 years. Demographics (neighbourhood family income) and repeated clinical characteristics and echocardiography were recorded longitudinally at multiple timepoints. A mixed-modelling approach was performed to evaluate acquired C-LVH in black versus white athletes controlling for playing position (linemen (LM) and non-linemen (NLM)), family income, body weight and blood pressure.Results: At baseline, black athletes (N=124) were more often NLM (72% vs 54%, p=0.005) and had lower median neighbourhood family income ($54 119 vs $63 146, p=0.006) compared with white athletes (N=125). While both black and white LM demonstrated similar increases in C-LVH over time, among NLM acquired C-LVH was more common in black versus white athletes (postseason year-1: N=14/89 (16%) vs N=2/68 (3%); postseason year-2: N=9/50 (18%) vs N=2/32 (6%); postseason year-3: N=8/33 (24%) vs N=1/13 (8%), p=0.005 change over time). In stratified models, black race was associated with acquired C-LVH in NLM (OR: 3.70, 95% CI 1.12 to 12.21, p=0.03) and LM was associated with acquired C-LVH in white athletes (OR: 3.40, 95% CI 1.03 to 11.27, p=0.048).Conclusions: Independent of family income and changes in weight and blood pressure, black race was associated with acquired C-LVH among collegiate ASF NLM and LM was associated with acquired C-LVH in white athletes.
