Abstract

In high-frequency electronics, optimizing RF oscillators performance is essential, especially as applications reach into wide frequency bands. This article describes proposed clock generators for UWB sensor systems based on oscillators with dielectric resonator (DRO). Evaluation boards with different sizes of microstrip conductors were developed and tested, based on which new versions of boards were created. Improvements were made to integrate the DRO into a shielded box to ensure minimal external interference. The final designs demonstrated stable operation with low phase noise λ (1 MHz) = -108.805 dBc at fc = 21.732 GHz, sufficient power (3.65 dBm) and low power consumption(56 mW).

Abstract

This paper deals with the realization, measurements and testing of an integrated UWB radar head operating in the continuously transmitted stimulation signal mode. The term UWB is derived from the exploited system bandwidth. Practically, the frequency bands nearly from DC to 14 GHz or those specified by the Electronic Communication Committee (ECC) or the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations are used. The stimulation signal is generated by modulation of the carrier by a binary sequence which spreads the frequency spectrum of the signal. Thanks to the parameters of the resulting signal, it is not the source of interference for other radio services, but it can be observed only as an increase in noise. In the context of the UWB radars emitting the spread-spectrum signal, the term noise radar is often used, where the generated spreading signal is the result of generation of a pseudorandom noise modulation signal. Theprincipleofgenerationofsuchasignalaswellas the description of the transmitter is described in this article in more details. The reception of the UWB signals is not a trivial task. Hence in this paper, we deal with the topic of the UWB radar transceiver, relying on the equivalent time sampling approach, with attention to the receiver section. The measurements focused on qualitative parameters of the given UWB radar are evaluated as well, concentrating on the innovative integrated front-end. The main tested parameters include reliability across the whole frequency range, dynamic range, as well as crosstalk in the proposed structure.

Abstract

This article deals with the ultra-wideband (UWB) front-end circuits for the ground penetrating radars (GPRs). New concepts for the GPR front-end circuits are proposed, which exploit electrically short active antennas to achieve minimal dimensions and the wide frequency band of the radar system as well as offer enhanced user experience in comparison to the currently used conventional GPR systems. This work suggests using the M-sequence radar as the core for the proposed GPR and sums up the specific issues, which have to be taken into account when designing the device transmitting radio waves through the inhomogeneous high-attenuation environment, typical for the GPR. Additionally, an overview of commercially available GPR antennas in the frequency band below 300 MHz is introduced for the comparison with the proposed solution.
