We introduce here our new approach to modeling particle cloud evolution off surface of small bodies (asteroids and comets), following the evolution of ejected particles requires dealing with various time and spatial scales, in an efficient, accurate and modular way. In order to improve computational efficiency and accuracy of such calculations, we created an N-body modeling package as an extension to the increasingly popular orbital dynamics N-body integrator Rebound. Our code is currently a stand-alone variant of the Rebound code and is aimed at advancing a comprehensive understanding of individual particle trajectories, external forcing, and interactions, at the scale which is otherwise overlooked by other modeling approaches. The package we developed -- Rebound Ejecta Dynamics (RED) -- is a Python-based implementation with no additional dependencies. It incorporates several major mechanisms that affect the evolution of particles in low-gravity environments and enables a more straightforward simulation of combined effects. We include variable size and velocity distributions, solar radiation pressure, ellipsoidal gravitational potential, binary or triple asteroid systems, and particle-particle interactions. In this paper, we present a sample of the RED package capabilities. Aboard the polar-orbiting SNPP satellite, the VIIRS instrument has been in operation since launch in October 2011. It is a visible and infrared radiometer with a unique panchromatic channel capability designated as a day-night band (DNB). This channel covers wavelengths from 0.5 to 0.9 µm and is designed with a near-constant spatial resolution for Earth observations 24 h a day. The DNB operates at 3 gain stages (low, middle, and high) to cover a large dynamic range. An onboard solar diffuser (SD) is used for calibration in the low gain stage, and to enable the derivation of gain ratios between the different stages. In this paper, we present the SNPP VIIRS DNB calibration performed by the NASA VIIRS characterization support team (VCST). The DNB calibration algorithms are described to generate the calibration coefficient look up tables (LUTs) for the latest NASA Level 1B Collection 2 products. We provide an evaluation of DNB on-orbit calibration performance. This activity supports the NASA Earth science community by delivering consistent VIIRS sensor data products via the Land Science Investigator-led Processing Systems, including the SD degradation applied for DNB calibrations in detector gain and gain ratio trending. The DNB stray light contamination and its correction are highlighted. Performance validations are presented using comparisons to the calibration methods employed by NOAA’s operational Interface Data Processing Segment. Further work on stray light corrections is also discussed.

Vera C. Rubin Observatory will be a key facility for small body science in planetary astronomy over the next decade. It will carry out the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), observing the sky repeatedly in u, g, r, i, z, and y over the course of ten years using a 6.5 m effective diameter telescope with a 9.6 square degree field of view, reaching approximately r = 24.5 mag (5-{\sigma} depth) per visit. The resulting dataset will provide extraordinary opportunities for both discovery and characterization of large numbers (10--100 times more than currently known) of small solar system bodies, furthering studies of planetary formation and evolution. The recently discovered object P/2019 LD2 (ATLAS) was initially thought to be a Jupiter Trojan asteroid, until dynamical studies and the appearance of persistent cometary activity revealed that this object is actually an active Centaur. However, the dynamical history, thermal environment, and impact of such environments on the activity of 2019 LD2 are poorly understood. Here we conduct dynamical simulations to constrain its orbital history and resulting thermal environment over the past 3000 years. We find that 2019 LD2 is currently in the vicinity of a dynamical "Gateway" that facilitates the majority of transitions from the Centaur population into the Jupiter Family of Comets (JFC population; Sarid et al. 2019). Our calculations show that it is unlikely to have spent significant amounts of time in the inner solar system, suggesting that its nucleus is relatively pristine in terms of physical, chemical, and thermal processing through its history. This could explain its relatively high level of distant activity as a recently activated primordial body. Finally, we find that the median frequency of transition from the Gateway population into the JFC population varies from once every ~3 years to less than once every 70 years, if 2019 LD2's nucleus is ~1 km in radius or greater than 3 km in radius. Forward modeling of 2019 LD2 shows that it will transition into the JFC population in 2063, representing the first known opportunity to observe the evolution of an active Centaur nucleus as it experiences this population-defining transition., Submitted to AAS Journals for publication

We consider the origin of ∼380 quasi-circular depressions (pits) seen to be distributed in a broad band across the surface of 9P/Tempel 1 and show that possibly ∼96% may be due to outburst activity. Of the rest, 4 kg and find that the resulting pit should have a diameter in the range 10–30 m. Published locations of mini-outbursts are revised to account for changes in the nucleus shape, rotation rate, and rotation pole that have resulted from observations made during the Stardust-NExT mission. Both of these locations are found to fall in, or on the edge of, the band of pits that encircles the nucleus. We have identified features in high-resolution images near one of these locations as the possible places of origin of the mini-outbursts. These features show close packing of multiple pits in the appropriate diameter range. We consider the distribution of pit diameters and show that the largest pits follow a power–law with exponent −2.24 ± 0.09. Using the June 14, 2005, mini-outburst and the Deep Impact crater to provide a calibration, we establish empirical relationships between pit diameter, D , the total outburst energy, E , and the visual magnitude change, Δ m abs , which is the visual amplitude of the outburst referenced to a standard initial brightness. We find Log 10 D ∼ 0.107(±0.004)Δ m abs + 1.3(±0.4) and Log 10 E ∼ 0.32(±0.01)Δ m abs + 10.1(±1.2) where the uncertainties represent the range of values for the coefficient rather than formal error. We apply these approximate relationships to the mega -outburst on 17P/Holmes and predict that it left a pit-like scar on the surface with a diameter in the range 160–1300 m, that the total energy released was in the range 7 × 10 12 –3 × 10 15 J, and that between 6 × 10 7 and 1.3 × 10 11 kg of material was ejected from the surface. While these predictions are crude they encompass, particularly near the upper end of the range, the results on kinetic energy release and mass loss found by Reach et al. (Reach, W.T., Vaubaillon, J., Lisse, C.M., Holloway, M., Rho, J. [2010]. Icarus 208, 276–292) based on IR observations of 17P.

The structure and composition of comet nuclei are mainly altered during two short phases that are separated by a very long hibernation phase. Early evolution—during and immediately after formation—is the result of heating caused by radioactive decay, the most important source being 26Al. Several studies are reviewed, dealing with evolution throughout this phase, calculated by means of 1-D numerical codes that solve the heat and mass balance equations on a fixed spherically symmetric grid. It is shown that, depending on parameters, the interior may reach temperatures above the melting point of water. The models thus suggest that comets are likely to lose the ices of very volatile species during early evolution; ices of less volatile species are retained in the cold subsurface layer. As the initially amorphous ice is shown to crystallize in the interior, some objects may also lose part of the volatiles trapped in amorphous ice. Generally, the outer layers are far less affected than the inner part, resulting in a stratified composition and altered porosity distribution. The second phase of evolution occurs when comet nuclei are deflected into the inner solar system and is dominated by the effect of solar radiation. Now the outer layers are those mostly affected, undergoing crystallization, loss of volatiles, and significant structural changes. If any part of a comet nucleus should retain its pristine structure and composition, it would be well below the surface and also well above the core.

We use a quasi 3-D thermal evolution model for a spherical comet nucleus, which takes into account the diurnal and latitudinal variation of the solar flux, but neglects lateral heat conduction. We model the thermal evolution and activity of Comet 9P/Tempel 1, in anticipation of the Deep Impact mission encounter with the comet. We also investigate the possible outcome of a projectile impact, assuming that all the energy is absorbed as thermal energy. An interesting result of this investigation, is that the estimated amount of dust ejected due to the impact is equivalent to 2--2.6 days of activity, during "quiet" conditions, at perihelion. We show that production rates of volatiles that are released in the interior of the nucleus depend strongly on the porous structure, in particular on the surface to volume ratio of the pores. We develop a more accurate model for calculating this parameter, based on a distribution of pore sizes, rather than a single, average pore size., 25 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in PASP (in press). International audience; Context: An ESO Large Program was undertaken in October 2006 (P.I.: M. A. Barucci) to provide as complete observations as possible of about 40 Trans-Neptunian Objects and Centaurs, to investigate their surface properties. Hence, new visible and near-infrared observations of Centaur 10199 Chariklo (1997 CU{26})) were performed. Aims: We investigate Chariklo's surface composition. It has already been suspected of being inhomogeneous. We try to confirm this assumption by comparing our results with previously published works, and find an explanation related the observed variations. Methods: A spectral modeling is applied to the spectra, using different types of mixtures, to place constraints on the amount of water ice present in our new spectrum. Several spectra, obtained at different moments by different groups, are compared by studying the variations in the depth of absorption bands attributable to water ice. The irradiation doses received by Chariklo's surface are also considered to interpret the observed variations. Results: The presence of water ice is not confirmed by our featureless near-infrared spectra. The main component on the surface, identified by our spectral modeling, is amorphous carbon, which may have been produced by irradiation if Chariklo originated in the transneptunian region. The suspected surface heterogeneity is also confirmed. We show that the variations in Chariklo's spectral behaviour could be explained by a variation in the number of craters across the surface. Comet-like activity is not detected in our data, though it cannot be excluded.

We present results of thermal evolution calculations for objects originating in the Kuiper belt and transferring inwards, to the region of the outer planets. Kuiper belt objects (KBOs) are considered to be part of a reservoir that supplies the flux of small icy bodies, mainly Centaurs and Jupiter-family comets, to regions interior to the orbit of Neptune. We study the internal thermal evolution, for yr, of three typical KBOs and use the end state of the simulation as initial conditions for evolutionary calculations of two typical Centaurs. Some evolutionary trends can be identified for the KBOs, depending on key physical parameters, such as size and composition. The subsequent evolution in the Centaur region results in both specific features for each modeled object (mainly surface and sub-surface composition) and common characteristics of thermally evolved Centaurs., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures, 5 table, accepted for publication in Meteoritics and Planetary Science (ACM2008 Special Issue)

Comet P/2010A2 LINEAR is a good candidate for membership with the Main Belt Comet family. It was observed with several telescopes (ESO NTT, La Silla; Gemini North, Mauna Kea; UH 2.2m, Mauna Kea) from 14 Jan. until 19 Feb. 2010 in order to characterize and monitor it and its very unusual dust tail, which appears almost fully detached from the nucleus; the head of the tail includes two narrow arcs forming a cross. The immediate surroundings of the nucleus were found dust-free, which allowed an estimate of the nucleus radius of 80-90m. A model of the thermal evolution indicates that such a small nucleus could not maintain any ice content for more than a few million years on its current orbit, ruling out ice sublimation dust ejection mechanism. Rotational spin-up and electrostatic dust levitations were also rejected, leaving an impact with a smaller body as the favoured hypothesis, and ruling out the cometary nature of the object. The impact is further supported by the analysis of the tail structure. Finston-Probstein dynamical dust modelling indicates the tail was produced by a single burst of dust emission. More advanced models, independently indicate that this burst populated a hollow cone with a half-opening angle alpha~40degr and with an ejection velocity v_max ~ 0.2m/s, where the small dust grains fill the observed tail, while the arcs are foreshortened sections of the burst cone. The dust grains in the tail are measured to have radii between a=1-20mm, with a differential size distribution proportional to a^(-3.44 +/- 0.08). The dust contained in the tail is estimated to at least 8x10^8kg, which would form a sphere of 40m radius. Analysing these results in the framework of crater physics, we conclude that a gravity-controlled crater would have grown up to ~100m radius, i.e. comparable to the size of the body.
