1. Improving snore detection under limited dataset through harmonic/percussive source separation and convolutional neural networks

Abstract

Snoring, an acoustic biomarker commonly observed in individuals with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome (OSAS), holds significant potential for diagnosing and monitoring this recognized clinical disorder. Irrespective of snoring types, most snoring instances exhibit identifiable harmonic patterns manifested through distinctive energy distributions over time. In this work, we propose a novel method to differentiate monaural snoring from non-snoring sounds by analyzing the harmonic content of the input sound using harmonic/percussive sound source separation (HPSS). The resulting feature, based on the harmonic spectrogram from HPSS, is employed as input data for conventional neural network architectures, aiming to enhance snoring detection performance even under a limited data learning framework. To evaluate the performance of our proposal, we studied two different scenarios: 1) using a large dataset of snoring and interfering sounds, and 2) using a reduced training set composed of around 1% of the data material. In the former scenario, the proposed HPSS-based feature provides competitive results compared to other input features from the literature. However, the key advantage of the proposed method lies in the superior performance of the harmonic spectrogram derived from HPSS in a limited data learning context. In this particular scenario, using the proposed harmonic feature significantly enhances the performance of all the studied architectures in comparison to the classical input features documented in the existing literature. This finding clearly demonstrates that incorporating harmonic content enables more reliable learning of the essential time-frequency characteristics that are prevalent in most snoring sounds, even in scenarios where the amount of training data is limited.

Abstract

The new scientific decade (2023-2032) of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) aims at searching for sustainable solutions to undesired water conditions – whether it be too little, too much or too polluted. Many of the current issues originate from global change, while solutions to problems must embrace local understanding and context. The decade will explore the current water crises by searching for actionable knowledge within three themes: global and local interactions, sustainable solutions and innovative cross-cutting methods. We capitalise on previous IAHS Scientific Decades shaping a trilogy; from Hydrological Predictions (PUB) to Change and Interdisciplinarity (Panta Rhei) to Solutions (HELPING). The vision is to solve fundamental water-related environmental and societal problems by engaging with other disciplines and local stakeholders. The decade endorses mutual learning and co-creation to progress towards UN sustainable development goals. Hence, HELPING is a vehicle for putting science in action, driven by scientists working on local hydrology in coordination with local, regional, and global processes.

15. Perceived Stress, Perceived Social Support, and Global Health in Adults with Chronic Pain

Abstract

Chronic pain is a common problem in adults that can have a significant impact on individuals' quality of life and on society. The complex pain experience emerges from a dynamic combination of biological, psychological, and social factors. Previous research has shown that social support has positive effects on health-related outcomes through two mechanisms: direct-effects and stress-buffering effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the role that perceived stress, perceived social support, and their interaction play as predictors of global physical health and global mental health in adults with chronic pain.One hundred sixty-five adults with chronic pain completed measures of pain, perceived stress, perceived social support, global physical health, and global mental health.Perceived stress but not perceived social support made a significant and independent contribution to the prediction of global physical health; both perceived stress and perceived social support made independent contributions to the prediction of global mental health. The perceived stress × perceived social support interaction did not make a significant contribution to the prediction of either criterion variable. The results suggested that perceived stress has an impact on both global physical and mental health, whereas perceived social support associated mostly with global mental health. In addition, perceived social support does not appear to moderate the impact of stress on global physical and mental health.The findings are more consistent with a direct-effects model than a stress-buffering model of social support.© 2023. 18. Alterations of the water cycle under megacity growth and climate change scenarios in the Bogotá river basin – Colombia

Abstract

Water cycle within a catchment is under permanent pressure due to changes in climate and in land use/cover (LULC), especially those resulting from rapid population growth such as megacities. Therefore, the combined evaluation of these alterations is fundamental for the appropriate decision-making not only in water resources and flood risk but also in land use planning and management. In this study, future scenarios of urban LULC to 2050 were analysed and assessed together with the projections of climate change trajectories in the Bogotá River basin (Colombia). Two models were implemented for this task: the Land Change Modeler - LCM was used to analyse the dynamics of land use change, with special emphasis on urban land use change and future scenarios; and the distributed hydrological model TETIS to assess the impacts on hydrological cycle caused by LULC and climate changes.The main results of the analysis show that: i) both changes in the future LULC and climate have independently significant impacts on the hydrological cycle of the Bogotá river basin, although no in a similar way or even opposite way as in the case of infiltration; and ii) considered together, the effect is essentially additive in all components of the water balance. For example, overland runoff (representing the fast response of the flood regime) will increase by 30% due to megacity growth in 2050, by 15% in RCP 8.5 for the period 2041-2070, while it will increase by 48% if both situations are combined in the future., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Abstract

In the Anthropocene, the food production has brought benefits but also multidimensional problems for human and ecosystem health. Then, agroecosystems, understood as natural covers altered by humans to obtain its ecosystem services, must be analysed from a holistic socio-ecological perspective in which water plays a central role. To do this, there are several approaches that depending on the prevailing discipline could be grouped as socio-hydrological or hydro-social approaches. The challenge is their integration from interdisciplinary to transdisciplinary. This is to provide effective solutions for the present problems associated with water, being agriculture one of the main priorities.In this work we integrate Georgescu-Roegen's bio-economic view of “flows” and “funds” with the use of distributed ecohydrological modelling to assess the sustainability of agroecosystems in recent times through the estimation of socio-ecologic metabolic indicators (in terms of both energy and mass). We have used the region of Andalusia as a representative case of the intensification of industrial agriculture in Spain. To do this, we exploited a database of socio-ecological variables generated by the Agroecosystems History Laboratory -LHA of the Pablo de Olavide University (Seville, Spain). We then used a digital database of land covers from different time periods (from 1956 to 2016) which was harmonised with the LHA. Finally, we developed an ecohydrological distributed modelling to quantify the water and energy fluxes associated with agroecosystem biomass production. Thanks to such integration we can estimate integrated metabolic indicators such as: Energy Return of Investments - EROI, negentropic cost, water scarcity indices, among others., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

30. Cross-National Trends of Chronic Back Pain in Adolescents: Results From the HBSC Study, 2001-2014

Abstract

Chronic back pain is a common problem that negatively impacts the wellbeing of many adolescents. Prior research suggests that the prevalence of chronic back pain has increased over the last decades, but research on this issue is scarce, single country-based, and has yielded inconsistent results. This study aimed to examine trends in the prevalence of chronic back pain over time in adolescents aged 11, 13 and 15, using data from the Health Behavior in School-aged Children (HBSC) survey. We conducted a secondary analysis of data from 650,851 adolescents, retrieved from four waves (2001/02, 2005/06, 2009/10 and 2013/14) of HBSC data from 33 countries or regions. The prevalence of back pain was higher (1) in each successive survey over time (18.3% in 2001/02, 19.3% in 2005/06, 20.4% in 2009/10 and 21.6% in 2013/14), (2) in girls (21.9%) compared to boys (17.8%), and (3) in older adolescents compared to younger ones (14.5% in 11-year-olds, 19.6% in 13-year-olds and 25.5% in 15-year-olds). The increase in prevalence from 2001/02 to 2013/14 was more marked in older girls compared to younger girls, and in older boys compared to younger boys, and it ranged between 1% for 11-year-old boys and 7% for 15-year-old girls. More resources should be allocated to the prevention and treatment of chronic back pain in adolescents, especially for older girls. Perspective: The prevalence of chronic back pain in adolescents has increased from 2001-2002 to 2013-2014, especially in older adolescent girls. These findings underline the need of further research to understand the reason behind the increasing trend, and what programs are better suited to prevent chronic back pain among adolescents. © 2021 United States Association for the Study of Pain, Inc.

Governance is a fundamental aspect and precondition for conservation strategies, such as protected areas or OECMs. A methodology for Site-level Assessment of Governance and Equity (SAGE) has been proposed by IUCN to explore different aspects of governance, based on ten principles. This article describes the application of SAGE to a candidate OECM for what we believe is the first time: the Andakí Municipal Natural Park in the Amazon region of Colombia. The application of SAGE generated useful insights into different aspects of governance, including the importance of good communication and recognising and respecting the rights and responsibilities of different actors. Based on this experience, we believe that the SAGE methodology could be a useful tool not only to identify priorities for improving governance, but also to assess governance and equity in order to evaluate if an area meets the criteria for an OECM that it is governed and managed to achieve sustained and effective contributions to in situ conservation of biodiversity, associated ecosystem functions and services, and cultural, spiritual, socio-economic and other locally relevant values. © 2021, IUCN - International Union for the Conservation of Nature. 45. Social Factors, Disability and Depressive Symptoms in Adults with Chronic Pain

Objectives: The primary aim of this study was to better understand the role that social factors (i.e., social support, satisfaction in participation with social roles, social isolation, and self-perceived ability to perform social roles and activities) play in pain-related interference and depressive symptoms in adults with chronic pain. Moreover, this study also examined if sex exerts a moderating role in these associations. Methods: In this cross-sectional-study, three hundred and sixty-four adults with chronic pain participated: 133 were university students and 231 were individuals from the community. University students completed a paper-and-pencil survey and individuals from the community responded to a web-based survey. Both surveys included the same questions assessing socio-demographic, pain characteristics, pain-related interference, depressive symptoms and social factors. Results: Only satisfaction in participation in social usual roles and self-perceived ability for participating in such social roles contributed independently, significantly and negatively to the prediction of pain interference, whereas all four social factors made independent and significant contributions to the prediction of depressive symptoms. Satisfaction with participation in usual social roles, self-perceived social ability and social support were negatively related to depressive symptoms, whereas social isolation was positively related. The results also indicated that sex moderated the associations between social factors and depressive symptoms, but not between social factors and pain interference.
