Direct injection fuel systems provide precise control over the amount of fuel injected and can enable higher compression ratio operation and earlier combustion phasing under knock-limited operation, particularly for fuels with a high cooling potential like hydrous ethanol, a blend of 92% ethanol and 8% water. Moving a portion of the total fuel mass from an intake stroke injection to a compression stroke injection can provide a knock suppression benefit, which can enable more efficient operation. In this work, the influence of injection pressure on this split injection spark ignition strategy is examined. The effect of injection pressure on two intake stroke injections were characterized, with an injection pressure of 200 bar improving combustion efficiency by ∼3 percentage points and advancing knock-limited CA50 by 1 crank angle degree over an injection pressure of 30 bar. Then, a compression stroke injection was introduced and swept into the compression stroke while maintaining the two intake stroke injections. Direct injections at an injection pressure of 30 bar enabled a small knock intensity reduction of ∼20%, whereas an injection pressure of 200 bar enabled a larger reduction of ∼90% in knock intensity. The spark timing advance permitted by the reduction in knock intensity with a compression stroke injection timing of −80 degrees after top dead center was 0.3 and 2.0 degrees at an injection pressure of 30 and 200 bar, respectively. Then, the second intake stroke injection was varied at 200 bar to evaluate how the stratification profile prior to the compression stroke injection impacted its ability to reduce knock intensity. It was found that compression stroke injections with an early second intake stroke injection was effective at reducing knock intensity throughout the compression stroke. As ethanol production increases and the demand for gasoline in spark ignition engines decreases over the next few decades, the use of these fuels in compression ignition systems is expected to increase. This raises the question of how much ethanol-in-gasoline is the right blend for compression ignition. This work experimentally studied E10, E30, E50, E75, and E100 in a split injection partially premixed compression ignition strategy. It was found that, separately, the cool flame reactivity of E10 and the high cooling potential of E75 and E100 enable heat release rate control in partially premixed combustion. E30 and E50 did not show the same control authority. E30 performed the worst due to having a small amount of cool flame reactivity and a low cooling potential. It was found that NOx emissions were not significantly impacted by ethanol content, but the smoke emissions were. E100 produced near zero smoke, but all the ethanol-gasoline blends produced some smoke. When 20% of the fuel was injected during the mid-dle of the compression stroke, E10, E30, E50, and E75 all produced low, but nonzero smoke emissions. When the second injection was moved near top dead center, the smoke emissions of E75 stayed low but the smoke emissions of E10, E30, and E50 all rose to a filter smoke number greater than 0.3. These results indicate that low- and high-ethanol content gasolines are both viable paths forward for partially premixed combustion systems, but medium-ethanol content gasolines should be avoided. When applied on combustion chamber walls, thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) with low thermal effusivity provide a pathway for reducing heat transfer and improving SI engine efficiency. A 3D CFD-1D FEA co-simulation routine was employed to study the effects of a proprietary TBC on SI engine performance under different permutations of coating the piston, exhaust valves, and intake valves. Marginal reductions (<0.1% points) in total heat transfer and improvements to efficiency were observed when all the three components were coated with the proprietary TBC. Two hypothetical TBC materials with ideally low thermal effusivities were formed by modifying the current material properties and their effect on engine performance was similarly studied at three engine loads at the same engine speed. It was found that coating all the three components with the lowest thermal effusivity TBC offers the largest improvements (∼0.5% points) in net fuel conversion efficiency accompanied by largest reduction (∼1.1% points) in total heat transfer, thus establishing expectations from future TBC materials. Continued research into thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) for internal combustion engines has generated insights into the design of TBCs that can increase fuel conversion efficiency. In this work, two low thermal inertia TBCs (a commercially available Gen 1 material, Gadolinium Zirconate, and a proprietary Gen 2 material) were experimentally tested in gasoline compression ignition (GCI) on a light-duty single cylinder research engine. Compared to a metal baseline, a 250-micron thick Gen 1 coated piston produced an efficiency benefit of 0.4 percentage points (pp) at 6 and 10 bar net indicated mean effective pressure (IMEPn) and a 0.2 pp penalty at 15 bar IMEPn. The Gen 1 coating also showed an uHC and smoke penalty. An 80-micron thick Gen 2 coated piston showed an efficiency benefit of 0.9 pp at 6 bar IMEPn and 0.4 pp at 10 bar IMEPn, but an efficiency penalty of 0.5 pp at 15 bar IMEPn. The Gen 2 coating, which has a lower thermal inertia than the Gen 1 coating, displayed durability problems while the Gen 1 coating did not. A third piston was coated with a 120-micron thick Gen 2 coating everywhere except the high failure outer bowl region, which was coated with a 120-micron Gen 1 coating. This hybrid coating displayed good durability, an uHC emission penalty, a smoke benefit, an efficiency benefit of 0.1 pp at 6 bar IMEPn, an efficiency benefit of 0.4 pp at 10 bar IMEPn, and no change in efficiency at 15 bar IMEPn. These results indicate that a durable Gen 1/Gen 2 coating can provide an efficiency benefit to GCI combustion, and that further improvements on piston-spray interaction optimization and surface sealing of the TBC, as well as increasing the coated combustion chamber surface area (e.g. head and valves) can add further improve efficiency. Temperature swing thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) have the potential to improve efficiency and performance through thermal management of the combustion chamber. However, the effects of combustion chamber deposits (CCDs) on the surface of the TBCs are unclear. Therefore, this paper analyzes the impact of CCD formation on a temperature swing TBC. A piston and a heat flux probe coated with a novel material are installed in a single-cylinder research engine at a low-load condition for 62.5 h to promote CCD growth. Every 12.5 h, the performance at a knock limited condition is assessed and thermophysical property measurements on the heat flux probe are performed. Net thermal efficiency increased by 0.4% absolute after 12.5 h relative to the baseline condition, but further CCD growth caused a dithering of efficiency between the 12.5 h and baseline points. The KLSA retarded consistently throughout this period. External property measurements with the coated heat flux probe showed an improvement in the thermophysical properties of the TBC/CCD layer. The opposed-piston two-stroke (OP2S) engine is a promising alternative powertrain technology that can offer thermal and brake efficiency improvements over conventional four-stroke engines. In recent years, many of the technical barriers of the OP2S engine architecture have been overcome. However, there is still a need for fundamental studies to provide insight into the scavenging and combustion processes of the OP2S engine to help design and operate the most efficient combustion systems using this engine architecture. This work aims to provide such insights by analyzing experimental data collected on a 3-cylinder, 4.9 L OP2S engine. Specifically, a scavenging efficiency sweep, an engine speed sweep with a constant scavenging efficiency, and an engine speed with a constant pressure differential across the engine were studied in detail. It was found that in diesel combustion, as the scavenging efficiency decreased, the increase in temperature of the hot, internal residuals resulted in a significant increase in heat transfer. Despite lowering pumping losses, this resulted in an overall decrease in brake efficiency. When the bulk thermodynamic conditions of two different scavenging efficiency cases (67% and 72%) were matched at port closing, the lower scavenging efficiency case still displayed a 0.7 percentage point penalty in net thermal efficiency and an increase in engine-out indicated specific emissions of NOx of 18% due to residual stratification in the cylinder. The results presented in this work show that the optimal breathing strategy in diesel combustion on an OP2S engine architecture is one that results in a slightly under-scavenged environment at port closing. However, the results did show potential system-level efficiency benefits of decreasing scavenging efficiency, meaning that alternative fuels and combustion strategies without the constraints of diesel combustion could achieve system-level efficiency gains by running significantly under-scavenged. Methanol is a fuel that can be produced using renewable electricity, green hydrogen, and a carbon-neutral carbon source. As a low-carbon liquid fuel, methanol is a leading candidate as a drop-in replacement fuel for rapid decarbonization of the transportation sector. In this work, methanol is tested experimentally in mixing-controlled compression ignition using a single-cylinder research engine. Specifically, the impact of a double injection strategy and high exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) dilution on performance and emissions parameters are studied. As a single-carbon, oxygenated fuel, methanol has a near-zero sooting potential, meaning there is no soot-NOx tradeoff as EGR dilution is increased. EGR dilution effectively reduces NOx emissions without a significant combustion efficiency or thermal efficiency penalty until the global equivalence ratio exceeds 0.9, at which point, a significant combustion efficiency penalty is incurred in the form of increased CO emissions. If stoichiometric operation with high EGR dilution is considered, engine-out NOx emissions are low, even at very high loads, and NOx aftertreatment is simplified through the use of a three-way catalyst. However, a relative decrease in the net fuel conversion efficiency of up to 8.5% was observed, demonstrating an emissions-efficiency tradeoff.
