With one year ofOpen Research Europe (ORE)under the belt, it istime to review and address the main challenges brought forward by researchers who have already published with ORE and those whoare still hesitant to do so.The platform provides all H2020 and Horizon Europe beneficiaries and their collaborators with an easy, high-quality platform to publish Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe funded research at no cost and in full compliance with the Commission’s open access policies. Despite the indisputable benefits of ORE, a joint effort for advocacy is needed to ensure the success and longevity of the platform. What is ORE’s vision? The vision of ORE is to deliver a high quality, reliable, and efficient publishing venue for EU research and a sustainable venue where grantees can publish post-grant the results of their work while respecting their open access obligations. The European Commission’s ambition is for ORE to lead by example in operationalising open science principles within scientific publishing while contributing to transparency, cost-effectiveness, and exploring sustainable open access publishing business models. What will be coveredin this workshop? During this workshop, speakers will discuss how key organisations like the European University Association (EUA) and the League of European Research Universities (LERU) are acting as trailblazers for Open Science and Open Access, and how ORE can be an important tool to utilise towards this cause. The most common questions and concerns that researchers have when it comes to publishing through ORE will be discussed, and the importance of ORE advocacy amongst research librarians will be addressed. The workshop will cumulate in a panel discussion designed to create synergies that will cement ORE as key tool that librarians can advocate for, and researchers can use to publish their work in an open and transparent manner. Data Train is a training programme at the doctoral level in research data management (RDM) and data science developed and delivered by the U Bremen Research Alliance with financial support of the German Federal State of Bremen. The U Bremen Research Alliance is a regional network that brings together the University of Bremen and twelve non-university research institutes in order to strengthen the cooperation in different research areas and scientific fields in the German Federal State of Bremen. The University of Cape Town implemented a range of services and training opportunities to support the uptake of RDM and FAIR data skills and practices at the institutional level. These activities are targeting students at the master level, doctoral candidates, academic staff and other researchers as well as the non-academic staff of UCT and of other interested institutions. Since 2018, two separate initiatives have emerged at TU Wien with the shared goal of fostering the emergence of FAIR data-sharing practices among, respectively doctoral candidates and Master students. Firstly, the university created the Center for Research Data Management, which advises and provides training to all researchers and support staff working at the institution. Secondly, the development of a Data Science curriculum which includes the “Data Stewardship” course has been promoting the uptake of RDM and FAIR data-related skills and competences among students at the Master level. The Doctoral School of Nova University Lisbon since 2015 offers a course in Research Data Management. This course was designed for doctoral candidates but allows other researchers, researcher managers, librarians, and research support staff from NOVA University to register. The initiative was taken by members of the University libraries, who saw an opportunity in national and European level policy developments to propose the dissemination of good practices on research data management to better address the needs of the academic staff at their institution. Tampere University implemented an Open Science Policy and Action Plan including an institutional approach to Research Data Management. Both documents were developed in 2018 during the creation of the university, following the merger of the University of Tampere and Tampere University of Technology. They provide a framework for doctoral candidates, other researchers and the research support staff on how data should be managed, curated and shared. Moreover, the Library of Tampere University developed two courses addressing RDM and FAIR data practices, which are delivered by the Doctoral School. Swissuniversities developed the Open Science programme to support the implementation of national action plans on Open Access and Open Research Data. The programme encourages Swiss higher education institutions to collaborate with each other and submit project proposals addressing the objectives and action lines set by the national strategies. The University of Minho Documentation and Libraries Service (UMinho) developed an Open Online Course (MOOC) in Research Data Management Massive in 2019 commissioned by the General Secretariat for Education and Science from the Portuguese Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education. The course is open to doctoral candidates and other researchers from all Portuguese higher education institutions who are interested in acquiring a basic understanding and knowledge of practices related to RDM and FAIR data. 68 pages, 8 figures, tables, 2 appendixes, Digital skills for FAIR and open science are a cornerstone of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC)’s operations and future. An EOSC network of skilled professionals is essential to bring a culture change for sharing research outcomes, and to empower individuals and institutions to develop and maintain EOSC competences, skills and capabilities. The EOSC Skills and Training Working Group (WG) was formed in 2020 to identify a framework for building competence and capabilities for EOSC. The WG focused on four priority areas that form the major sections of this report: 1. Developing the next generation of FAIR and open science professionals: Presents a framework of all the EOSC actors (roles) in the EOSC ecosystem for whom skills and training is relevant. 2. Collaborating to enhance digital skills for FAIR and open science in Europe: Reviews organisational approaches to implement training activities and programmes, through the concept of competence centres. 3. Building a trusted and long-lasting and trusted knowledge hub of learning and training resources and related tools: Provides insights for an EOSC federated training catalogue as part of a sustainable training infrastructure that supports EOSC actors. 4. Influencing national open science policy for skills by supporting strategic leaders: Analyses the framing of digital skills required in EOSC in the wider European agenda for skills, to provide recommendations for Member States and Associated Countries on how to support EOSC in national skills policies and strategies

As part of the EOSC project family the FAIRsFAIR - Fostering Fair Data Practices in Europe - project aims to supply practical solutions for the use of the FAIR data principles throughout the research data life cycle. The FAIRsFAIR project runs from March 2019-February 2022. FAIRsFAIR Work Package 7 “FAIR Data Science and Professionalisation” aims to develop resources and build communities that support the uptake of RDM and FAIR practice within higher education curricula. To achieve these objectives, the present report aims to build a foundation for the identification of existing practices and needs of higher education institutions. Both a web-based questionnaire with 90 responses and two focus groups with a total of 50 participants were conducted between September and November 2019 as basis for the report. The research covered several dimensions of research data management at HEIs relevant for the implementation of FAIRsFAIR WP7, as well as WP3 “FAIR Data Policy Practice” and WP6 “FAIR Competence Centre”. These dimensions included: Institutional research data management policies Support services for research data management Competence development of students and graduates Universities and EOSC FAIRsFAIR support for universities This is the draft version of the deliverable not yet approved by the European Commission.
