Search

The relative contribution of emission from stellar sources and accretion onto supermassive black holes to reionization has been brought into focus again by the apparent high abundance of faint AGN at $4\lesssim z\lesssim11$ uncovered by JWST. We investigate the contribution of these faint AGN to hydrogen and the early stages of helium reionization using the GPU-based radiative transfer code ATON-HE by post-processing a cosmological hydrodynamical simulation from the SHERWOOD-RELICS suite of simulations. We study four models of reionization: two previously studied galaxy-only late-end reionization models and two new models -- a QSO-assisted model and a QSO-only model. In the QSO-assisted model, 1\% of the haloes host AGN with a 10~Myr lifetime, and the AGN luminosities are scaled such that the AGN contribution to the hydrogen-ionizing emissivity is 20\% of that contributed by galaxies. In the QSO-only model, quasars account for all the hydrogen-ionizing emissivity, with 10\% of the haloes hosting AGN, each with a 10 Myr lifetime. All models are calibrated to the observed mean Lyman-$\alpha$ forest transmission at $5\lesssim z\lesssim6.2$. We find that the QSO-assisted model requires an emissivity factor of $1.8$ lower than the galaxy-only models towards the end of reionization and fits the observed distribution of the Lyman-$\alpha$ optical depths well. Our QSO-only model is inconsistent with the observed Lyman-$\alpha$ optical depths distribution. It also results in too high IGM temperatures at $z\lesssim 5$ due to an early onset of HeII reionization unless the escape fraction of HeII-ionizing photons is assumed to be low. Our results suggest that a modest contribution to reionization by faint AGN is in good agreement with the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest data. We experimentally demonstrate a weak measurement and measurement reversal-based scheme to ameliorate the effects of decoherence due to amplitude damping, on an NMR quantum processor. The weak measurement and measurement reversal processes require the implementation of non-unitary operations, which are typically infeasible on conventional quantum processors, where only unitary quantum operations are allowed. The duality quantum algorithm is used to efficiently implement the required non-unitary quantum operations corresponding to weak measurement and measurement reversal. We experimentally validate the efficacy of the weak measurement-based decoherence mitigation scheme by showing state protection on a four-qubit system, with one qubit being designated as the 'system qubit', while the remaining three qubits serve as 'ancilla qubits'. Our experimental results clearly demonstrate the success of the weak measurement-based decoherence mitigation scheme in protecting the desired state. Since the measurement process involved has trace less than unity, the scheme can be thought of as a filtration scheme, where a subset of the spins is protected while the rest of the spins can be discarded., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We report the results of a QCD axion dark matter search with discovery ability for Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnitsky (DFSZ) axions using an axion haloscope. Sub-Kelvin noise temperatures are reached with an ultra low-noise Josephson parametric amplifier cooled by a dilution refrigerator. This work excludes (with a 90% confidence level) DFSZ axions with masses between 3.27 to 3.34 {\mu}eV, assuming a standard halo model with a local energy density of 0.45 GeV/cc made up 100% of axions.

The dynamics of perfect fluid as a source in the context of modified gravity, specifically $f(Q,T)$ gravity, are examined within the Friedmann-Lema\^itre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) cosmological model. This gravity is a generic function of the non-metricity scalar $Q$ and its trace $T$. We investigate the characteristics of the derived cosmological model using a parameterized form of Hubble's parameter, $H(z) = H_0\left[\Omega_{0m}(1+z)^3 + (1-\Omega_{0m})\right]^{\frac{1}{2}}$ (Mahmood et al. Our examination reveals how physical parameters such as energy density, pressure, and the equation of state parameter, among others, in our model accurately describe the physical behavior of the cosmos. Furthermore, we explore the kinematic parameters in our model, which provide valuable insights into the cosmos's expansion history, including its acceleration, deceleration, and the evolution of its large-scale structure. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing biodiversity research by enabling advanced data analysis, species identification, and habitats monitoring, thereby enhancing conservation efforts. Ensuring reproducibility in AI-driven biodiversity research is crucial for fostering transparency, verifying results, and promoting the credibility of ecological findings.This study investigates the reproducibility of deep learning (DL) methods within the biodiversity domain. We design a methodology for evaluating the reproducibility of biodiversity-related publications that employ DL techniques across three stages. We define ten variables essential for method reproducibility, divided into four categories: resource requirements, methodological information, uncontrolled randomness, and statistical considerations. These categories subsequently serve as the basis for defining different levels of reproducibility. We manually extract the availability of these variables from a curated dataset comprising 61 publications identified using the keywords provided by biodiversity experts. Our study shows that the dataset is shared in 47% of the publications; however, a significant number of the publications lack comprehensive information on deep learning methods, including details regarding randomness.

The ability to generate entangled states of light is a key primitive for quantum communication and distributed quantum computation. Continuously driven sources, including those based on spontaneous parametric downconversion, are usually probabilistic, whereas deterministic sources require accurate timing of the control fields. Here, we experimentally generate entangled photonic modes by continuously exciting a quantum emitter, a superconducting qubit, with a coherent drive, taking advantage of mode matching in the time and frequency domain. Using joint quantum state tomography and logarithmic negativity, we show that entanglement is generated between modes extracted from the two sidebands of the resonance fluorescence spectrum. Because the entangled photonic modes are perfectly orthogonal, they can be transferred into distinct quantum memories. Our approach can be utilized to distribute entanglement at a high rate in various physical platforms, with applications in waveguide quantum electrodynamics, distributed quantum computing, and quantum networks.

Machine Translation (MT) between linguistically dissimilar languages is challenging, especially due to the scarcity of parallel corpora. Prior works suggest that pivoting through a high-resource language can help translation into a related low-resource language. However, existing works tend to discard the source sentence when pivoting. Taking the case of English to Indian language MT, this paper explores the 'multi-source translation' approach with pivoting, using both source and pivot sentences to improve translation. We conducted extensive experiments with various multi-source techniques for translating English to Konkani, Manipuri, Sanskrit, and Bodo, using Hindi, Marathi, and Bengali as pivot languages. We find that multi-source pivoting yields marginal improvements over the state-of-the-art, contrary to previous claims, but these improvements can be enhanced with synthetic target language data. We believe multi-source pivoting is a promising direction for Low-resource translation.

Checkpointing is a cornerstone of data-flow reversal in adjoint algorithmic differentiation. Checkpointing is a storage/recomputation trade-off that can be applied at different levels, one of which being the call tree. We are looking for good placements of checkpoints onto the call tree of a given application, to reduce run time and memory footprint of its adjoint. There is no known optimal solution to this problem other than a combinatorial search on all placements. We propose a heuristics based on run-time profiling of the adjoint code. We describe implementation of this profiling tool in an existing source-transformation AD tool. We demonstrate the interest of this approach on test cases taken from the MITgcm ocean and atmospheric global circulation model. We discuss the limitations of our approach and propose directions to lift them.

Recent quasar absorption line observations suggest that reionization may end as late as $z \approx 5.3$. As a means to search for large neutral hydrogen islands at $z<6$, we revisit long dark gaps in the Ly$\beta$ forest in VLT/X-Shooter and Keck/ESI quasar spectra. We stack the Ly$\alpha$ forest corresponding to both edges of these Ly$\beta$ dark gaps and identify a damping wing-like extended absorption profile. The average redshift of the stacked forest is $z=5.8$. By comparing these observations with reionization simulations, we infer that such a damping wing-like feature can be naturally explained if these gaps are at least partially created by neutral islands. Conversely, simulated dark gaps lacking neutral hydrogen struggle to replicate the observed damping wing features. Furthermore, this damping wing-like profile implies that the volume-averaged neutral hydrogen fraction must be $\langle x_{\rm HI} \rangle \geq 6.1 \pm 3.9\%$ at $z = 5.8$. Recent observations have positioned the endpoint of the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) at redshift $z \sim 5.3$. However, observations of the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest have not yet been able to discern whether reionisation occurred slowly and late, with substantial neutral hydrogen persisting at redshift $\sim 6$, or rapidly and earlier, with the apparent late end driven by the fluctuating UV background. Gunn-Peterson (GP) absorption troughs are solid indicators that reionisation is not complete until $z=5.3$, but whether they contain significantly neutral gas has not yet been proven. We aim to answer this question by directly measuring, for the first time, the neutral hydrogen fraction ($x_\mathrm{HI}$) at the end of the EoR ($5 \lesssim z \lesssim 6$) in high-redshift quasars spectra. For high neutral fractions $x_\mathrm{HI}\gtrsim0.1$, GP troughs exhibit damping wing (DW) absorption extending over $1000$ km s$^{-1}$ beyond the troughs. While conclusively detected in Lyman-$\alpha$ emission lines of quasars at $z\geq7$, DWs are challenging to observe in the general Lyman-$\alpha$ forest due to absorption complexities and small-scale stochastic transmission features. We report the first successful identification of the stochastic DW signal adjacent to GP troughs at redshifts $z=5.6$ through careful stacking of the dark gaps in Lyman-$\alpha$ forest. We use the signal to present a measurement of the corresponding global $x_\mathrm{HI}=0.19\pm0.07$ $(_{-0.16}^{+0.11})$ at $1\sigma$ $(2\sigma)$ at $z=5.6$ and a limit $x_\mathrm{HI}<0.44$ at $z=5.9$. Given a graph $G=(V,E)$ and an integer $k\in \mathbb{N}$, we investigate the 2-Eigenvalue Vertex Deletion (2-EVD) problem. The objective is to remove at most $k$ vertices such that the adjacency matrix of the resulting graph has at most two eigenvalues. It is established that the adjacency matrix of a graph has at most two eigenvalues if and only if the graph is a collection of equal-sized cliques. Thus, the 2-Eigenvalue Vertex Deletion amounts to removing a set of at most $k$ vertices to transform the graph into a collection of equal-sized cliques. The 2-Eigenvalue Edge Editing (2-EEE), 2-Eigenvalue Edge Deletion (2-EED) and 2-Eigenvalue Edge Addition (2-EEA) problems are defined analogously. We present a kernel of size $\mathcal{O}(k^{3})$ for $2$-EVD, along with an FPT algorithm with a running time of $\mathcal{O}^{*}(2^{k})$. For the problem $2$-EEE, we provide a kernel of size $\mathcal{O}(k^{2})$. Additionally, we present linear kernels of size $5k$ and $6k$ for $2$-EEA and $2$-EED respectively. For the $2$-EED, we also construct an algorithm with running time $\mathcal{O}^{*}(1.47^{k})$ . These results address open questions posed by Misra et al. (ISAAC 2023) regarding the complexity of these problems when parameterized by the solution size.

As the occurrence of extreme weather events is increasing so are the outages caused by them. During such unplanned outages, a house needs to be provided with an energy supply to maintain habitable conditions by maintaining thermal comfort and servicing at least critical loads. An energy system consisting of rooftop photovoltaic (PV) panels along with battery storage is an excellent carbon-free choice to provide energy resiliency to houses against extreme weather-related outages. However, to provide habitable conditions this energy system has to provide not only for the non-air-conditioning (non-AC) load demand but also for the turning on of the AC system which has a considerably higher startup power requirement as compared to its rated power. Hence, an intelligent automated decision-making controller is needed which can manage the trade-off between competing requirements. In this paper, we propose such an intelligent controller based on Model Predictive Control (MPC). We compare its performance with a Baseline controller which is unintelligent, and a Rule-Based controller which has some intelligence, based on three resiliency metrics that we have developed. We perform extensive simulations for numerous scenarios involving different energy system sizes and AC startup power requirements. Every simulation is one week long and is carried out for a single-family detached house located in Florida in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma in 2017. The simulation results show that the MPC controller performs better than the other controllers in the more energy-constrained scenarios (smaller PV-battery size, larger AC startup power requirement) in providing both thermal comfort and servicing non-AC loads in a balanced manner., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, submitted to CCTA 2024

Unveiling the thermal history of the intergalactic medium (IGM) at $4 \leq z \leq 5$ holds the potential to reveal early onset HeII reionization or lingering thermal fluctuations from HI reionization. We set out to reconstruct the IGM gas properties along simulated Lyman-alpha forest data on pixel-by-pixel basis, employing deep Bayesian neural networks. Our approach leverages the Sherwood-Relics simulation suite, consisting of diverse thermal histories, to generate mock spectra. Our convolutional and residual networks with likelihood metric predicts the Ly$\alpha$ optical depth-weighted density or temperature for each pixel in the Ly$\alpha$ forest skewer. We find that our network can successfully reproduce IGM conditions with high fidelity across range of instrumental signal-to-noise. These predictions are subsequently translated into the temperature-density plane, facilitating the derivation of reliable constraints on thermal parameters. This allows us to estimate temperature at mean cosmic density, $T_{\rm 0}$ with one sigma confidence $\delta T_{\rm 0} \sim 1000{\rm K}$ using only one $20$Mpc/h sightline ($\Delta z\simeq 0.04$) with a typical reionization history. Existing studies utilize redshift pathlength comparable to $\Delta z\simeq 4$ for similar constraints. We can also provide more stringent constraints on the slope ($1\sigma$ confidence interval $\delta {\rm \gamma} \lesssim 0.1$) of the IGM temperature-density relation as compared to other traditional approaches. We test the reconstruction on a single high signal-to-noise observed spectrum ($20$ Mpc/h segment), and recover thermal parameters consistent with current measurements. We introduce FLAME, a machine-learning algorithm designed to fit Voigt profiles to HI Lyman-alpha (Ly$\alpha$) absorption lines using deep convolutional neural networks. FLAME integrates two algorithms: the first determines the number of components required to fit Ly$\alpha$ absorption lines, and the second calculates the Doppler parameter $b$, the HI column density N$_{\rm HI}$, and the velocity separation of individual components. For the current version of FLAME, we trained it on low-redshift Ly$\alpha$ forests observed with the far-ultraviolet gratings of the Cosmic Origin Spectrograph (COS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Using these data, we trained FLAME on $\sim$ $10^6$ simulated Voigt profiles which we forward-modeled to mimic Ly$\alpha$ absorption lines observed with HST-COS in order to classify lines as either single or double components and then determine Voigt profile-fitting parameters. FLAME shows impressive accuracy on the simulated data, identifying more than 98\% (90\%) of single (double) component lines. It determines $b$ values within $\approx \pm{8}~(15)$ km s$^{-1}$ and log $N_{\rm HI}/ {\rm cm}^2$ values within $\approx \pm 0.3~(0.8)$ for 90\% of the single (double) component lines. However, when applied to real data, FLAME's component classification accuracy drops by $\sim$ 10\%. Nevertheless, there is reasonable agreement between the $b$ and N$_{\rm HI}$ distributions obtained from traditional Voigt profile-fitting methods and FLAME's predictions. Our mock HST-COS data analysis, designed to emulate real data parameters, demonstrates that FLAME is able to achieve consistent accuracy comparable to its performance with simulated data. This finding suggests that the drop in FLAME's accuracy when used on real data primarily arises from the difficulty in replicating the full complexity of real data in the training sample., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

The goal of quantum metrology is to improve measurements' sensitivities by harnessing quantum resources. Metrologists often aim to maximize the quantum Fisher information, which bounds the measurement setup's sensitivity. In studies of fundamental limits on metrology, a paradigmatic setup features a qubit (spin-half system) subject to an unknown rotation. One obtains the maximal quantum Fisher information about the rotation if the spin begins in a state that maximizes the variance of the rotation-inducing operator. If the rotation axis is unknown, however, no optimal single-qubit sensor can be prepared. Inspired by simulations of closed timelike curves, we circumvent this limitation. We obtain the maximum quantum Fisher information about a rotation angle, regardless of the unknown rotation axis. To achieve this result, we initially entangle the probe qubit with an ancilla qubit. Then, we measure the pair in an entangled basis, obtaining more information about the rotation angle than any single-qubit sensor can achieve. We demonstrate this metrological advantage using a two-qubit superconducting quantum processor. We utilize a superconducting qubit processor to experimentally probe non-Markovian dynamics of an entangled qubit pair. We prepare an entangled state between two qubits and monitor the evolution of entanglement over time as one of the qubits interacts with a small quantum environment consisting of an auxiliary transmon qubit coupled to its readout cavity. We observe the collapse and revival of the entanglement as a signature of quantum memory effects in the environment. We then engineer the non-Markovianity of the environment by populating its readout cavity with thermal photons to show a transition from non-Markovian to Markovian dynamics, ultimately reaching a regime where the quantum Zeno effect creates a decoherence-free subspace that effectively stabilizes the entanglement between the qubits., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology General Circulation Model (MITgcm) is widely used by the climate science community to simulate planetary atmosphere and ocean circulations. A defining feature of the MITgcm is that it has been developed to be compatible with an algorithmic differentiation (AD) tool, TAF, enabling the generation of tangent-linear and adjoint models. These provide gradient information which enables dynamics-based sensitivity and attribution studies, state and parameter estimation, and rigorous uncertainty quantification. Importantly, gradient information is essential for computing comprehensive sensitivities and performing efficient large-scale data assimilation, ensuring that observations collected from satellites and in-situ measuring instruments can be effectively used to optimize a large uncertain control space. As a result, the MITgcm forms the dynamical core of a key data assimilation product employed by the physical oceanography research community: Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean (ECCO) state estimate. Although MITgcm and ECCO are used extensively within the research community, the AD tool TAF is proprietary and hence inaccessible to a large proportion of these users. The new version 2 (MITgcm-AD v2) framework introduced here is based on the source-to-source AD tool Tapenade, which has recently been open-sourced. Another feature of Tapenade is that it stores required variables by default (instead of recomputing them) which simplifies the implementation of efficient, AD-compatible code. The ADMX collaboration gathered data for its Run 1A axion dark matter search from January to June 2017, scanning with an axion haloscope over the frequency range 645-680 MHz (2.66-2.81 ueV in axion mass) at DFSZ sensitivity. The resulting axion search found no axion-like signals comprising all the dark matter in the form of a virialized galactic halo over the entire frequency range, implying lower bound exclusion limits at or below DFSZ coupling at the 90% confidence level. Higher dimensional Euclidean Liouville conformal field theories (LCFTs) consist of a log-correlated real scalar field with a background charge and an exponential potential. We analyse the LCFT on a four-dimensional manifold with a boundary. We extend to the boundary, the conformally covariant GJMS operator and the ${\cal Q}$-curvature term in the LCFT action and classify the conformal boundary conditions. Working on a flat space with plate boundary, we calculate the dimensions of the boundary conformal primary operators, the two- and three-point functions of the displacement operator and the boundary conformal anomaly coefficients.

The variations in Ly$\alpha$ forest opacity observed at $z>5.3$ between lines of sight to different background quasars are too strong to be caused by fluctuations in the density field alone. The leading hypothesis for the cause of this excess variance is a late, ongoing reionization process at redshifts below six. Another model proposes strong ionizing background fluctuations coupled to a short, spatially varying mean free path of ionizing photons, without explicitly invoking incomplete reionization. With recent observations suggesting a short mean free path at $z\sim6$, and a dramatic improvement in $z>5$ Ly$\alpha$ forest data quality, we revisit this latter possibility. Here we apply the likelihood-free inference technique of approximate Bayesian computation to jointly constrain the hydrogen photoionization rate $\Gamma_{\rm HI}$ and the mean free path of ionizing photons $\lambda_{\rm mfp}$ from the effective optical depth distributions at $z=5.0$-$6.1$ from XQR-30. We find that the observations are well-described by fluctuating mean free path models with average mean free paths that are consistent with the steep trend implied by independent measurements at $z\sim5$-$6$, with a concomitant rapid evolution of the photoionization rate., Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures, resubmitted to ApJ after referee's comments

The Axion Dark Matter eXperiment (ADMX) has previously excluded Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnisky (DFSZ) axions between 680-790 MHz under the assumption that the dark matter is described by the isothermal halo model. However, the precise nature of the velocity distribution of dark matter is still unknown, and alternative models have been proposed. We report the results of a non-virialized axion search over the mass range 2.81-3.31 {\mu}eV, corresponding to the frequency range 680-800 MHz. This analysis marks the most sensitive search for non-virialized axions sensitive to Doppler effects in the Milky Way Halo to date. Accounting for frequency shifts due to the detector's motion through the Galaxy, we exclude cold flow relic axions with a velocity dispersion of order 10^-7 c with 95% confidence.
