The production of electron bunches with low transverse emittance approaches the thermal emittance of the photocathode as various aberrations are corrected. Recently, the coupled transverse dynamics aberration was theoretically identified as a significant source of emittance growth and a corrector magnet was proposed for its elimination [D.H. Dowell, F. Zhou, and J. Schmerge, PRAB 21, 010101 (2018)]. This aberration arises when the beam acquires an asymmetric distribution that is then rotated with respect to the transverse reference axis thus introducing a correlation in the vertical and horizontal planes. The asymmetry is introduced by a weak quadrupole field in the rf gun or emittance compensation solenoid and the rotation is caused by the solenoid. This Letter presents an experimental study of the coupled transverse dynamics aberration in an rf photoinjector and demonstrates its elimination by a quadrupole corrector consisting of a normal and a skew quadrupole. The experimental results agree well with theoretical predictions and numerical simulations. The study also demonstrates the emittance of a low charge beam can be preserved during transportation at its thermal value, which was 1.05 mm mrad/mm, for the cesium telluride photocathode and 248 nm UV laser used., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The solenoid scan is a widely used method for the in-situ measurement of the thermal emittance in a photocathode gun. The popularity of this method is due to its simplicity and convenience since all rf photocathode guns are equipped with an emittance compensation solenoid. This paper shows that the solenoid scan measurement overestimates the thermal emittance in the ordinary measurement configuration due to a weak quadrupole field (present in either the rf gun or gun solenoid) followed by a rotation in the solenoid. This coupled transverse dynamics aberration introduces a correlation between the beam's horizontal and vertical motion leading to an increase in the measured 2D transverse emittance, thus the overestimation of the thermal emittance. This effect was systematically studied using both analytic expressions and numerical simulations. These studies were experimentally verified using an L-band 1.6-cell rf photocathode gun with a cesium telluride cathode, which shows a thermal emittance overestimation of 35% with a rms laser spot size of 2.7 mm. The paper concludes by showing that the accuracy of the solenoid scan can be improved by using a quadrupole magnet corrector, consisting of a pair of normal and skew quadrupole magnets., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures

The notion of complex energy landscape underpins the intriguing dynamical behaviors in many complex systems ranging from polymers, to brain activity, to social networks and glass transitions. The spin glass state found in dilute magnetic alloys has been an exceptionally convenient laboratory frame for studying complex dynamics resulting from a hierarchical energy landscape with rugged funnels. Here, we show, by a bulk susceptibility and Monte Carlo simulation study, that densely populated frustrated magnets in a spin jam state exhibit much weaker memory effects than spin glasses, and the characteristic properties can be reproduced by a nonhierarchical landscape with a wide and nearly flat but rough bottom. Our results illustrate that the memory effects can be used to probe different slow dynamics of glassy materials, hence opening a window to explore their distinct energy landscapes., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures

I propose to use high brightness electron beam with 1 to 100 MeV energy as tool to combat tumor or cancerous tissues in deep part of body. The method is to directly deliver the electron beam to the tumor site via a small tube that connected to a high brightness electron beam accelerator that is commonly available around the world. Here I gave a basic scheme on the principle, I believe other issues people raises will be solved easily for those who are interested in solving the problems.

Using a high energy electron beam for the imaging of high density matter with both high spatial-temporal and areal density resolution under extreme states of temperature and pressure is one of the critical challenges in high energy density physics . When a charged particle beam passes through an opaque target, the beam will be scattered with a distribution that depends on the thickness of the material. By collecting the scattered beam either near or off axis, so-called bright field or dark field images can be obtained. Here we report on an electron radiography experiment using 45 MeV electrons from an S-band photo-injector, where scattered electrons, after interacting with a sample, are collected and imaged by a quadrupole imaging system. We achieved a few micrometers (about 4 micrometers) spatial resolution and about 10 micrometers thickness resolution for a silicon target of 300-600 micron thickness. With addition of dark field images that are captured by selecting electrons with large scattering angle, we show that more useful information in determining external details such as outlines, boundaries and defects can be obtained., Comment: 7pages, 7 figures

Producing high-brightness and high-charge (>100 pC) electron bunches at blowout regime requires ultrashort laser pulses with high fluence. The effects of laser pulse heating of the copper photocathode are analyzed in this paper. The electron and lattice temperature is calculated using an improved two-temperature model, and an extended Dowell-Schmerge model is employed to calculate the thermal emittance and quantum efficiency. A time-dependent growth of the thermal emittance and the quantum efficiency is observed. For a fixed amount of charge, the projected thermal emittance increases with decreasing laser radius, and this effect should be taken into account in laser optimization at blowout regime. Moreover, laser damage threshold fluence is simulated, showing that the maximum local fluence should be less than 40 mJ/cm^2 to prevent damage to the cathode., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures

Undesirable electron field emission (a.k.a. dark current) in high gradient RF photocathode guns deteriorates the quality of photoemission current and limits the operational gradient. To improve the understanding of dark current emission, a high-resolution (~100 um) dark current imaging experiment has been performed in an L-band photocathode gun operating at ~100 MV/m of surface gradient. Dark current from the cathode has been observed to be dominated by several separated strong emitters. The field enhancement factor, beta, of selected regions on the cathode has been measured. The post scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and white light interferometer (WLI) surface examinations reveal the origins of ~75% strong emitters overlap with the spots where rf breakdown have occurred., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

A special beam line for high energy electron radiography is designed, including achromat and imaging systems. The requirement of the angle and position correction on the target from imaging system can be approximately realized by fine tuning the quadrupoles used in the achromat. The imaging system is designed by fully considering the limitation from the laboratory and beam diagnostics devices space. Two kinds of imaging system are designed and both show a good performance of imaging by beam trajectory simulation. The details of the beam optical requirement and optimization design are presented here. The beam line is designed and prepared to install in Tsinghua university linear electron accelerator laboratory for further precise electron radiography experiment study., Comment: 8 pages

A case performance study of a planar field emission cathode (FEC) based on nitrogen-incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond, (N)UNCD, was carried out in an RF 1.3 GHz electron gun. The FEC was a 100 nm (N)UNCD film grown on a 20 mm diameter stainless steel disk with a Mo buffer layer. At surface gradients 45-65 MV/m, peak currents of 1-80 mA (equivalent to 0.3-25 mA/cm$^2$) were achieved. Imaging with two YAG screens confirmed emission from the (N)UNCD surface with (1) the beam emittance of 1.5 mm$\times$mrad/mm-rms, and (2) longitudinal FWHM and rms energy spread of 0.7% and 11% at an electron energy of 2 MeV. Current stability was tested over the course of 36$\times$10$^3$ RF pulses (equivalent to 288$\times$10$^6$ GHz oscillations)., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

The International Linear Collider Technical Design Report (TDR) describes in four volumes the physics case and the design of a 500 GeV centre-of-mass energy linear electron-positron collider based on superconducting radio-frequency technology using Niobium cavities as the accelerating structures. The accelerator can be extended to 1 TeV and also run as a Higgs factory at around 250 GeV and on the Z0 pole. A comprehensive value estimate of the accelerator is give, together with associated uncertainties. It is shown that no significant technical issues remain to be solved. Once a site is selected and the necessary site-dependent engineering is carried out, construction can begin immediately. The TDR also gives baseline documentation for two high-performance detectors that can share the ILC luminosity by being moved into and out of the beam line in a "push-pull" configuration. These detectors, ILD and SiD, are described in detail. The generation and capture of polarized positrons at a source with a superconducting helical undulator having 4.3 cm period and 500 GeV electron drive beam have been simulated. The positron polarization has been calculated for the different undulator K values (up to K = 2.5). Without applying a photon collimator, the maximal polarization of positrons is about 25% for 231 meters active magnet length of undulator with K = 0.7. Using an undulator with K = 2.5 and a collimator with an aperture radius of 0.9 mm results in increase of positron polarization to 54%. The energy deposition, temperature rise and stress induced by high intense photon beam in the rotated titanium-alloy target have been estimated. The maximal thermal stress in the target is about 224 MPa for the source with photon collimation to achieve a positron polarization of 54%., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, 1 table
