Transients in GPS time series can occur due to post-seismic deformation, seasonal hydrological loads, sea-level changes, flood and drought conditions, excessive groundwater withdrawal and recharge, etc. We report two new cases where the application of external loading, namely, earthquake loading and surface loading due to impoundment of hydroelectric reservoir, probably altered the local hydrological conditions to cause anomalous transients in the surface displacement. In the first case, moderate shaking due to the 2015 Gorkha earthquake at Patna (Bihar, India) caused transients in ground deformation in the following 50–60 days of the earthquake which are recorded by a continuous GPS site at Patna. In the second case, impoundment of the Tehri reservoir and its seasonal variations in the Garhwal Himalaya probably altered the local hydrological conditions which is causing anomalous biannual cyclic deformation at a site KUNR, near the reservoir.

The interaction between seasonally-induced non-tectonic and tectonic deformation along the Himalayan plate boundary remains debated. Here, we propose that tectonic deformation along this plate boundary can be significantly influenced by the deformation induced by the non-tectonic hydrological loading cycles. We explore seasonal mass oscillations by continental water storage in Southeast Asia and Himalayan arc region using continuous Global Positioning System measurements and satellite data from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment. We suggest that the substantially higher transient displacements above the base of the seismogenic zone indicate a role of changes in aseismic slip rate on the deep megathrust that may be controlled by seasonal hydrological loading. We invoke modulation of aseismic slip on the megathrust down-dip of the seismogenic zone due to a fault resonance process induced by the seasonal stress changes. This process modulates mid-crustal ramp associated micro-seismicity and influences the timing of Central Himalayan earthquakes.

The earthquake swarm in Palghar, western India, is a natural laboratory to understand long-duration seismogenesis. However, it requires an accurate estimation of the key parameters, such as earthquake locations and the velocity model of the region. Two separate studies performed by two organisations in India, the CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) and the National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported significantly differing results from the first 8–12 months of earthquake monitoring in Palghar. CSIR-NGRI reported the depth of earthquakes in the range of 4–15 km, whereas NCS reported a much shallower depth down to 7 km only. We investigate the reason for this depth discrepancy by analysing datasets from the networks of both these organisations. We find that no available velocity models are able to reconcile the depth difference between the two datasets. Selection criteria generally adopted to determine a good velocity model, such as travel-time residuals and location errors, also failed to identify a suitable velocity model. Several synthetic tests helped us to identify that the network geometry and source-station separation are contributing factors to the observed depth difference. However, the main reason for the discrepancy was found to be inconsistent velocity models used for location at both networks. The main objective of our work is to estimate a velocity model which minimises the depth discrepancy between both datasets. In this regard, we synthetically generated hundreds of models with different VP and VP/VS ratios, followed by a grid search of VP and VP/VS ratios, which harmonises the location from the two datasets. The best model consists of a VP lying between 5.55–5.85 km/s and a VP/VS ratio between 1.77–1.81. For this velocity model, there is a greater overlap of the hypocentral clouds from both networks, and about 80% of the earthquakes of the CSIR-NGRI network were located within depths ≤ 7 km. We find that location errors vary seasonally, which is also related to the VP/VS of the crust. Since earlier studies have also found a strong correspondence between rainfall and seismicity in this region, we infer that the high VP/VS ratio might have been caused by the rainfall saturation of cracks in the Palghar seismicity zone. Himachal region of Northwest Himalaya exhibits the widest structural re‐entrant in Kangra region and significant strain partitioning along the frontal and hinterland out‐of‐sequence faults. We report results of continuous GPS measurements from 10 new sites in the region and analyze them along with the previously published results to constrain the ongoing arc‐normal and arc‐parallel convergence rates at 16.5 ± 1.1 and 4–5 mm/yr respectively. Thus, the ongoing convergence is oblique by 15°–20°. The Main Himalayan Thrust (MHT) is strongly coupled up to ∼100 km from the Main Frontal Thrust but displays significant variation in coupling in the transition zone across the Kangra re‐entrant and the adjoining western salient. Joint analysis of the coupling variation, the geologically inferred MHT geometry variations and the local topographic anomaly pattern strongly suggest the possibility of a potentially active, strain accumulating segment of MBT along the southern margin of Dhauladhar ranges in Western Himachal region, which is also proposed to be influencing the long‐term topographic growth in the region. Although a general agreement is observed between the long‐term shortening rates along the active faults and the estimated geodetic convergence in this region, the ensuing discussion highlights their complex relationship in terms of temporal and spatial variability in the fault activity and elastic‐inelastic deformation. We use the fault orientation and the estimated convergence rate to geometrically constrain a mean dextral slip‐rate of 4.4–5.7 mm/yr along a recently discovered Khetpurali‐Taksal fault, which is proposed to partition the majority of ongoing arc‐parallel deformation along it.
