Search

We report the results of a spectroscopic survey of candidate T subdwarfs identified by the Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 program. Near-infrared spectra of 31 sources with red $J-W2$ colors and large $J$-band reduced proper motions show varying signatures of subsolar metallicity, including strong collision-induced H$_2$ absorption, obscured methane and water features, and weak K I absorption. These metallicity signatures are supported by spectral model fits and 3D velocities, indicating thick disk and halo population membership for several sources. We identify three new metal-poor T subdwarfs ([M/H] $\lesssim$ $-$0.5), CWISE J062316.19+071505.6, WISEA J152443.14$-$262001.8, and CWISE J211250.11-052925.2; and 19 new "mild" subdwarfs with modest metal deficiency ([M/H] $\lesssim$ $-$0.25). We also identify three metal-rich brown dwarfs with thick disk kinematics. We provide kinematic evidence that the extreme L subdwarf 2MASS J053253.46+824646.5 and the mild T subdwarf CWISE J113010.07+313944.7 may be part of the Thamnos population, while the T subdwarf CWISE J155349.96+693355.2 may be part of the Helmi stream. We define a metallicity classification system for T dwarfs that adds mild subdwarfs (d/sdT), subdwarfs (sdT), and extreme subdwarfs (esdT) to the existing dwarf sequence. We also define a metallicity spectral index that correlates with metallicities inferred from spectral model fits and iron abundances from stellar primaries of benchmark T dwarf companions. We present the discovery of 118 new ultracool dwarf candidates, discovered using a new machine learning tool, named \texttt{SMDET}, applied to time series images from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer. We gathered photometric and astrometric data to estimate each candidate's spectral type, distance, and tangential velocity. This sample has a photometrically estimated spectral class distribution of 28 M dwarfs, 64 L dwarfs, and 18 T dwarfs. We also identify a T subdwarf candidate, two extreme T subdwarf candidates, and two candidate young ultracool dwarfs. Five objects did not have enough photometric data for any estimations to be made. To validate our estimated spectral types, spectra were collected for 2 objects, yielding confirmed spectral types of T5 (estimated T5) and T3 (estimated T4). We present the Ultracool Dwarf Companion Catalogue of 278 multiple systems, 32 of which are newly discovered, each with at least one spectroscopically confirmed Ultracool Dwarf, within a 100 pc volume-limited sample. This catalogue is compiled using the Gaia Catalogue of Nearby Stars for stellar primaries and the Gaia Ultracool Dwarf Sample for low-mass companions and includes 241 doubles, 33 triples, and 4 higher-order systems established from positional, proper motion, and parallax constraints. The catalogue seeks to identify probable benchmark systems within 100 pc to obtain model-independent astrophysical parameters of Ultracool Dwarfs. Chance alignment probabilities are calculated to evaluate the physical nature of each system. Astrometric and photometric data from Gaia Data Release 3 and the Two Micron All Sky Survey are included for all objects. We identify potential unseen companions using a combination of the Renormalised Unit Weight Error, Image Parameter Determination statistics, Non-Single Star solutions, and photometric blending as provided by Gaia, identifying hierarchical Ultracool triple systems. Our catalogue includes 17 White Dwarf - Ultracool Dwarf systems, whose ages are determined using cooling models. We also use the Gaia FLAME results and the BANYAN $\Sigma$ procedures to age 40 and 34 systems respectively, and derive mass estimates from evolutionary models., Comment: 26 pages, 8 figures

The LHS 6343 system consists of a resolved M-dwarf binary with an evolved, negligibly irradiated brown dwarf, LHS 6343 C, orbiting the primary star. Such brown dwarf eclipsing binaries present rare and unique opportunities to calibrate sub-stellar evolutionary and atmosphere models since mass, radius, temperature and luminosity can be directly measured. We update this brown dwarf's mass (62.6+/-2.2 MJup) and radius (0.788+/-0.043 RJup) using empirical stellar relations and a Gaia DR3 distance. We use Hubble Space Telescope/WFC3 observations of an LHS 6343 C secondary eclipse to obtain a NIR emission spectrum, which matches to a spectral type of T1.5+/-1. We combine this spectrum with existing Kepler and Spitzer/IRAC secondary eclipse photometry to perform atmospheric characterization using the ATMO-2020, Sonora-Bobcat and BT-Settl model grids. ATMO-2020 models with strong non-equilibrium chemistry yield the best fit to observations across all modelled bandpasses while predicting physical parameters consistent with Gaia-dependant analogs. BT-Settl predicts values slightly more consistent with such analogs but offers a significantly poorer fit to the WFC3 spectrum. Finally, we obtain a semi-empirical measurement of LHS 6343 C's apparent luminosity by integrating its observed and modelled spectral energy distribution. Applying knowledge of the system's distance yields a bolometric luminosity of log(Lbol/Lsun) = -4.77+/-0.03 and, applying the Stefan-Boltzmann law for the known radius, an effective temperature of 1303+/-29 K. We also use the ATMO-2020 and Sonora-Bobcat evolutionary model grids to infer an age for LHS 6343 C of 2.86 +0.40-0.33 Gyr and 3.11 +0.50-0.38 Gyr respectively., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The Near-InfraRed Planet Searcher or NIRPS is a precision radial velocity spectrograph developed through collaborative efforts among laboratories in Switzerland, Canada, Brazil, France, Portugal and Spain. NIRPS extends to the 0.98-1.8 $\mu$m domain of the pioneering HARPS instrument at the La Silla 3.6-m telescope in Chile and it has achieved unparalleled precision, measuring stellar radial velocities in the infrared with accuracy better than 1 m/s. NIRPS can be used either stand-alone or simultaneously with HARPS. Commissioned in late 2022 and early 2023, NIRPS embarked on a 5-year Guaranteed Time Observation (GTO) program in April 2023, spanning 720 observing nights. This program focuses on planetary systems around M dwarfs, encompassing both the immediate solar vicinity and transit follow-ups, alongside transit and emission spectroscopy observations. We highlight NIRPS's current performances and the insights gained during its deployment at the telescope. Nearby associations of stars which are coeval are important benchmark laboratories because they provide robust measurements of stellar ages. The study of such coeval groups makes it possible to better understand star formation by studying the initial mass function, the binary fraction or the circumstellar disks of stars, to determine how the initially dense populations of young stars gradually disperse to form the field population, and to shed light on how the properties of stars, exoplanets and substellar objects evolve with distinct snapshots along their lifetime. The advent of large-scale missions such as Gaia is reshaping our understanding or stellar kinematics in the Solar neighborhood and beyond, and offers the opportunity to detect a large number of loose, coeval stellar associations for the first time, which evaded prior detection because of their low density or the faintness of their members. In parallel, advances in detection and characterization of exoplanets and substellar objects are starting to unveil the detailed properties of extrasolar atmospheres, as well as population-level distributions in fundamental exoplanet properties such as radii, masses, and orbital parameters. Accurate ages are still sparsely available to interpret the evolution of both exoplanets and substellar objects, and both fields are now ripe for detailed age investigations because we are starting to uncover ever-closer low-density associations that previously escaped detection, as well as exoplanets and ever lower-mass members of more distant open clusters and star-forming regions. In this paper, we review some recent advances in the identification and characterization of nearby associations, the methods by which stellar ages are measured, and some of the direct applications of the study of young associations such as the emergent field of isolated planetary-mass objects., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASP tutorials. 22 pages, 15 figures

We present the discovery of VHS J183135.58$-$551355.9 (hereafter VHS J1831$-$5513), an L/T transition dwarf identified as a result of its unusually red near-infrared colors ($J-K_{\rm S}=3.633\pm0.277$ mag; $J-W2=6.249\pm0.245$ mag) from the VISTA Hemisphere Survey and CatWISE2020 surveys. We obtain low resolution near-infrared spectroscopy of VHS J1831$-$5513 using Magellan/FIRE to confirm its extremely red nature and assess features sensitive to surface gravity (i.e., youth). Its near-infrared spectrum shows multiple CH$_{\rm 4}$ absorption features, indicating an exceptionally low effective temperature for its spectral type. Based on proper motion measurements from CatWISE2020 and a photometric distance derived from its $K_{\rm S}$-band magnitude, we find that VHS J1831$-$5513 is a likely ($\sim$85$\%$ probability) kinematic member of the $\beta$ Pictoris moving group. Future radial velocity and trigonometric parallax measurements will clarify such membership. Follow-up mid-infrared or higher resolution near-infrared spectroscopy of this object will allow for further investigation as to the cause(s) of its redness, such as youth, clouds, and viewing geometry., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures; Accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal

Stellar flares are short-duration ($<$ hours) bursts of radiation associated with surface magnetic reconnection events. Stellar magnetic activity generally decreases as a function of both age and Rossby number, $R_0$, a measure of the relative importance of the convective and rotational dynamos. Young stars ($<300$ Myr) have typically been overlooked in population-level flare studies due to challenges with flare-detection methods. Here, we select a sample of stars that are members of 26 nearby moving groups, clusters, or associations with ages $<$300 Myr that have been observed by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite at 2-minute cadence. We identified 26,355 flares originating from 3,157 stars and robustly measure the rotation periods of 1,847 stars. We measure and find the flare frequency distribution (FFD) slope, $\alpha$, saturates for all spectral types at $\alpha \sim -0.5$ and is constant over 300 Myr. Additionally, we find that flare rates for stars $t_\textrm{age} = 50 - 250$ Myr are saturated below $R_0 < 0.14$, which is consistent with other indicators of magnetic activity. We find evidence of annual flare rate variability in eleven stars, potentially correlated with long term stellar activity cycles. Additionally, we cross match our entire sample with GALEX and find no correlation between flare rate and Far- and Near-Ultraviolet flux. Finally, we find the flare rates of planet hosting stars are relatively lower than comparable, larger samples of stars, which may have ramifications for the atmospheric evolution of short-period exoplanets., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables, under review at AAS Journals. We present the discovery of 13 new widely separated T dwarf companions to M dwarf primaries, identified using WISE/NEOWISE data by the CatWISE and Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 projects. This sample represents a $\sim$60% increase in the number of known M+T systems, and allows us to probe the most extreme products of binary/planetary system formation, a discovery space made available by the CatWISE2020 catalog and the Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 effort. Highlights among the sample are WISEP J075108.79-763449.6, a previously known T9 thought to be old due to its SED, which we now find is part of a common-proper-motion pair with L 34-26 A, a well studied young M3 V star within 10 pc of the Sun; CWISE J054129.32-745021.5 B and 2MASS J05581644-4501559 B, two T8 dwarfs possibly associated with the very fast-rotating M4 V stars CWISE J054129.32-745021.5 A and 2MASS J05581644-4501559 A; and UCAC3 52-1038 B, which is among the widest late T companions to main sequence stars, with a projected separation of $\sim$7100 au. Beyond our solar system, aurorae have been inferred from radio observations of isolated brown dwarfs (e.g. Hallinan et al. 2006; Kao et al. 2023). Within our solar system, giant planets have auroral emission with signatures across the electromagnetic spectrum including infrared emission of H3+ and methane. Isolated brown dwarfs with auroral signatures in the radio have been searched for corresponding infrared features but have only had null detections (e.g. Gibbs et al. 2022). CWISEP J193518.59-154620.3. (W1935 for short) is an isolated brown dwarf with a temperature of ~482 K. Here we report JWST observations of strong methane emission from W1935 at 3.326 microns. Atmospheric modeling leads us to conclude that a temperature inversion of ~300 K centered at 1-10 millibar replicates the feature. This represents an atmospheric temperature inversion for a Jupiter-like atmosphere without irradiation from a host star. A plausible explanation for the strong inversion is heating by auroral processes, although other internal and/or external dynamical processes cannot be ruled out. The best fit model rules out the contribution of H3+ emission which is prominent in solar system gas giants however this is consistent with rapid destruction of H3+ at the higher pressure where the W1935 emission originates (e.g. Helling et al. 2019)., Comment: Accepted in Nature 9 February 2024

We report the identification of 89 new systems containing ultracool dwarf companions to main sequence stars and white dwarfs, using the citizen science project Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 and cross-reference between Gaia and CatWISE2020. Thirty-two of these companions and thirty-three host stars were followed up with spectroscopic observations, with companion spectral types ranging from M7-T9 and host spectral types ranging from G2-M9. These systems exhibit diverse characteristics, from young to old ages, blue to very red spectral morphologies, potential membership to known young moving groups, and evidence of spectral binarity in 9 companions. Twenty of the host stars in our sample show evidence for higher order multiplicity, with an additional 11 host stars being resolved binaries themselves. We compare this sample's characteristics with those of the known stellar binary and exoplanet populations, and find our sample begins to fill in the gap between directly imaged exoplanets and stellary binaries on mass ratio-binding energy plots. With this study, we increase the population of ultracool dwarf companions to FGK stars by $\sim$42\%, and more than triple the known population of ultracool dwarf companions with separations larger than 1,000 au, providing excellent targets for future atmospheric retrievals., Comment: 61 pages, 11 figures, 11 tables. We present observations of the T8 dwarf 2MASS 0415-0935 with JWST's NIRSpec spectrograph using the G395H grating ($\sim$ 2.87 - 5.14 $\mu$m). We perform the first atmospheric retrieval analysis at the maximum spectral resolution of NIRSpec (R$\sim$2700) and combine the spectrum with previous observations to study the 0.9-20 $\mu$m spectral energy distribution. We obtain precise constraints on chemical abundances ($\sim$0.02 dex) for a number of species which complicate our understanding of disequilibrium chemistry, particularly for CO$_{2}$ and PH$_{3}$. Furthermore, we measure a $^{12}$CO/$^{13}$CO ratio of $\sim 97^{+9}_{-8}$, making 2MASS 0415-0935 the coldest ($\sim 760$ K) substellar object outside of our solar system with a measured $^{12}$CO/$^{13}$CO ratio. This work shows promise for similar observations with JWST to provide precise abundances of major chemical species as well as isotopologues, allowing for new tests of our understanding of the formation and atmospheres of substellar objects., Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures. Determining the precise ages of young (tens to a few hundred Myr) kinematic (``moving") groups is important for placing star, protoplanetary disk, and planet observations on an evolutionary timeline. The nearby $\sim$25 Myr-old $\beta$ Pictoris Moving Group (BPMG) is an important benchmark for studying stars and planetary systems at the end of the primordial disk phase. Gaia DR3 astrometry and photometry, combined with ground-based observations and more sophisticated stellar models, permit a systematic re-evaluation of BPMG membership and age. We combined Gaia astrometry with previously published radial velocities to evaluate moving group membership in a Bayesian framework. To minimize the effect of unresolved stellar multiplicity on age estimates, we identified and excluded multi-star systems using Gaia astrometry, ground-based adaptive optics imaging, and multi-epoch radial velocities, as well as literature identifications. We estimated age using isochrone and lithium-depletion-boundary fitting with models that account for the effect of magnetic activity and spots on young, rapidly rotating stars. We find that age estimates are highly model-dependent; Dartmouth magnetic models with ages of 23$\pm$8 Myr and 33$^{+9}_{-11}$ Myr provide best fits to the lithium depletion boundary and Gaia $M_G$ vs. $B_{P}$-$R_{P}$ color-magnitude diagram, respectively, whereas a Dartmouth standard model with an age of 11$^{+4}_{-3}$ Myr provides a best fit to the 2MASS-Gaia $M_{K_S}$ vs. $B_{P}$-$R_{P}$ color-magnitude diagram., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS Main Journal Dec 2023

A complete accounting of nearby objects -- from the highest-mass white dwarf progenitors down to low-mass brown dwarfs -- is now possible, thanks to an almost complete set of trigonometric parallax determinations from Gaia, ground-based surveys, and Spitzer follow-up. We create a census of objects within a Sun-centered sphere of 20-pc radius and check published literature to decompose each binary or higher-order system into its separate components. The result is a volume-limited census of $\sim$3,600 individual star formation products useful in measuring the initial mass function across the stellar ($<8 M_\odot$) and substellar ($\gtrsim 5 M_{Jup}$) regimes. Comparing our resulting initial mass function to previous measurements shows good agreement above 0.8$M_\odot$ and a divergence at lower masses. Our 20-pc space densities are best fit with a quadripartite power law, $\xi(M) = dN/dM \propto M^{-\alpha}$ with long-established values of $\alpha = 2.3$ at high masses ($0.55 < M < 8.00 M_\odot$) and $\alpha = 1.3$ at intermediate masses ($0.22 < M < 0.55 M_\odot$), but at lower masses we find $\alpha = 0.25$ for $0.05 < M <0.22 M_\odot$ and $\alpha = 0.6$ for $0.01 < M < 0.05 M_\odot$. This implies that the rate of production as a function of decreasing mass diminishes in the low-mass star/high-mass brown dwarf regime before increasing again in the low-mass brown dwarf regime. Y dwarfs, the coolest known spectral class of brown dwarfs, overlap in mass and temperature with giant exoplanets, providing unique laboratories for studying low-temperature atmospheres. However, only a fraction of Y dwarf candidates have been spectroscopically confirmed. We present Keck/NIRES near-infrared spectroscopy of the nearby ($d \approx 6-8$ pc) brown dwarf CWISE J105512.11+544328.3. Although its near-infrared spectrum aligns best with the Y0 standard in the $J$-band, no standard matches well across the full $YJHK$ wavelength range. The CWISE J105512.11+544328.3 NH$_3$-$H$ = 0.427 $\pm$ 0.0012 and CH$_4$-$J$ = 0.0385 $\pm$ 0.0007 absorption indices and absolute Spitzer [4.5] magnitude of 15.18 $\pm$ 0.22 are also indicative of an early Y dwarf rather than a late T dwarf. CWISE J105512.11+544328.3 additionally exhibits the bluest Spitzer [3.6]$-$[4.5] color among all spectroscopically confirmed Y dwarfs. Despite this anomalously blue Spitzer color given its low luminosity, CWISE J105512.11+544328.3 does not show other clear kinematic or spectral indications of low metallicity. Atmospheric model comparisons yield a log(g) $\le$ 4.5 and $T_{\rm eff} \approx 500 \pm 150$ K for this source. We classify CWISE J105512.11+544328.3 as a Y0 (pec) dwarf, adding to the remarkable diversity of the Y-type population. JWST spectroscopy would be crucial to understanding the origin of this Y dwarf's unusual preference for low-gravity models and blue 3-5 $\mu$m color., Comment: accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We characterize the impact of several sources of systematic errors on the computation of the traceback age of the $\beta$ Pictoris Moving Group ($\beta$PMG). We find that uncorrected gravitational redshift and convective blueshift bias absolute radial velocity measurements by $\sim$ 0.6 kms${}^{-1}$, which leads to erroneously younger traceback ages by $\sim$ 2 Myr. Random errors on parallax, proper motion, and radial velocity measurements lead to an additional bias of $\sim$ 1.5 Myr on traceback ages. Contamination of astrometric and kinematic data by kinematic outliers and unresolved multiple systems in the full input sample of 76 members and candidates of $\beta$PMG also erroneously lowers traceback ages by ${\sim}$ 3 Myr. We apply our new numerical traceback analysis tool to a core sample of 25 carefully vetted members of $\beta$PMG using Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3) data products and other kinematic surveys. Our method yields a corrected age of 20.4 $\pm$ 2.5 Myr, bridging the gap between kinematic ages (11$-$19 Myr) and other age-dating methods, such as isochrones and lithium depletion boundary (20$-$26 Myr). We explore several association size metrics that can track the spatial extent of $\beta$PMG over time, and we determine that minimizing the variance along the heliocentric curvilinear coordinate $\xi^{\prime}$ (i.e., toward the Galactic Center) offers the least random and systematic errors, due to the wider UVW space velocity dispersion of members of $\beta$PMG along the U-axis, which tends to maximize the spatial growth of the association along the $\xi^{\prime}$-axis over time.

We present the discovery of CWISE J050626.96$+$073842.4 (CWISE J0506$+$0738), an L/T transition dwarf with extremely red near-infrared colors discovered through the Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 citizen science project. Photometry from UKIRT and CatWISE give a $(J-K)_{\rm MKO}$ color of 2.97$\pm$0.03 mag and a $J_{\rm MKO}-$W2 color of 4.93$\pm$0.02 mag, making CWISE J0506$+$0738 the reddest known free-floating L/T dwarf in both colors. We confirm the extremely red nature of CWISE J0506$+$0738 using Keck/NIRES near-infrared spectroscopy and establish that it is a low-gravity late-type L/T transition dwarf. The spectrum of CWISE J0506$+$0738 shows possible signatures of CH$_4$ absorption in its atmosphere, suggesting a colder effective temperature than other known, young, red L dwarfs. We assign a preliminary spectral type for this source of L8$\gamma$-T0$\gamma$. We tentatively find that CWISE J0506$+$0738 is variable at 3-5 $\mu$m based on multi-epoch WISE photometry. Proper motions derived from follow-up UKIRT observations combined with a radial velocity from our Keck/NIRES spectrum and a photometric distance estimate indicate a strong membership probability in the $\beta$ Pic moving group. A future parallax measurement will help to establish a more definitive moving group membership for this unusual object., Comment: Accepted to ApJ Letters

We report the discovery and characterization of a nearby (~ 85 pc), older (27 +/- 3 Myr), distributed stellar population near Lower-Centaurus-Crux (LCC), initially identified by searching for stars co-moving with a candidate transiting planet from TESS (HD 109833; TOI 1097). We determine the association membership using Gaia kinematics, color-magnitude information, and rotation periods of candidate members. We measure it's age using isochrones, gyrochronology, and Li depletion. While the association is near known populations of LCC, we find that it is older than any previously found LCC sub-group (10-16 Myr), and distinct in both position and velocity. In addition to the candidate planets around HD 109833 the association contains four directly-imaged planetary-mass companions around 3 stars, YSES-1, YSES-2, and HD 95086, all of which were previously assigned membership in the younger LCC. Using the Notch pipeline, we identify a second candidate transiting planet around HD 109833. We use a suite of ground-based follow-up observations to validate the two transit signals as planetary in nature. HD 109833 b and c join the small but growing population of <100 Myr transiting planets from TESS. HD 109833 has a rotation period and Li abundance indicative of a young age (< 100 Myr), but a position and velocity on the outskirts of the new population, lower Li levels than similar members, and a CMD position below model predictions for 27 Myr. We present the largest and most homogeneous collection of near-infrared (NIR) spectra of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia): 339 spectra of 98 individual SNe obtained as part of the Carnegie Supernova Project-II. These spectra, obtained with the FIRE spectrograph on the 6.5 m Magellan Baade telescope, have a spectral range of 0.8--2.5 $\mu$m. Using this sample, we explore the NIR spectral diversity of SNe Ia and construct a template of spectral time series as a function of the light-curve-shape parameter, color stretch $s_{BV}$. Principal component analysis is applied to characterize the diversity of the spectral features and reduce data dimensionality to a smaller subspace. Gaussian process regression is then used to model the subspace dependence on phase and light-curve shape and the associated uncertainty. Our template is able to predict spectral variations that are correlated with $s_{BV}$, such as the hallmark NIR features: Mg II at early times and the $H$-band break after peak. Using this template reduces the systematic uncertainties in K-corrections by ~90% compared to those from the Hsiao template. These uncertainties, defined as the mean K-correction differences computed with the color-matched template and observed spectra, are on the level of $4\times10^{-4}$ mag on average. This template can serve as the baseline spectral energy distribution for light-curve fitters and can identify peculiar spectral features that might point to compelling physics. The Tucana-Horologium Association (Tuc-Hor) is a 40 Myr old moving group in the southern sky. In this work, we measure the rotation periods of 313 Tuc-Hor objects with TESS light curves derived from TESS full frame images and membership lists driven by Gaia EDR3 kinematics and known youth indicators. We recover a period for 81.4% of the sample and report 255 rotaion periods for Tuc-Hor objects. From these objects we identify 11 candidate binaries based on multiple periodic signals or outlier Gaia DR2 and EDR3 re-normalised unit weight error (RUWE) values. We also identify three new complex rotators (rapidly rotating M dwarf objects with intricate light curve morphology) within our sample. Along with the six previously known complex rotators that belong to Tuc-Hor, we compare their light curve morphology between TESS Cycle 1 and Cycle 3 and find they change substantially. Furthermore, we provide context for the entire Tuc-Hor rotation sample by describing the rotation period distributions alongside other youth indicators such as H{\alpha} and Li equivalent width, as well as near ultra-violet and X ray flux. We investigate the nature of an unusually faint member of the $\epsilon$ Cha Association ($D\sim100$ pc, age $\sim5$ Myr), the nearest region of star formation of age $<$8 Myr. This object, 2MASS J11550336-7919147 (2M1155$-$79B), is a wide ($\sim$580 AU) separation, comoving companion to low-mass (M3) $\epsilon$ Cha Association member 2MASS J11550485-7919108 (2M1155$-$79A). We present near-infrared spectra of both components, along with analysis of photometry from Gaia EDR3, 2MASS, VHS, and WISE. The near-IR spectrum of 2M1155$-$79B displays strong He I 1.083 emission, a sign of active accretion and/or accretion-driven winds from a circumstellar disk. Analysis of WISE archival data reveals that the mid-infrared excess previously associated with 2M1155$-$79A instead originates from the disk surrounding 2M1155$-$79B. Based on these results, as well as radiative transfer modeling of its optical/IR spectral energy distribution, we conclude that 2M1155$-$79B is most likely a young, late-M, star that is partially obscured by, and actively accreting from, a nearly edge-on circumstellar disk. This would place 2M1155$-$79B among the rare group of nearby ($D\lesssim100$ pc), young (age $<$10 Myr) mid-M stars that are orbited by and accreting from highly inclined protoplanetary disks. Hi-5 is the L'-band (3.5-4.0 $\mu$m) high-contrast imager of Asgard, an instrument suite in preparation for the visitor focus of the VLTI. The system is optimized for high-contrast and high-sensitivity imaging within the diffraction limit of a single UT/AT telescope. It is designed as a double-Bracewell nulling instrument producing spectrally-dispersed (R=20, 400, or 2000) complementary nulling outputs and simultaneous photometric outputs for self-calibration purposes. In this paper, we present an update of the project with a particular focus on the overall architecture, opto-mechanical design of the warm and cold optics, injection system, and development of the photonic beam combiner. The key science projects are to survey (i) nearby young planetary systems near the snow line, where most giant planets are expected to be formed, and (ii) nearby main sequence stars near the habitable zone where exozodiacal dust that may hinder the detection of Earth-like planets. We report the discovery of the Oceanus moving group, a $\approx$ 500 Myr-old group with 50 members and candidate members at distances 2-50 pc from the Sun using an unsupervised clustering analysis of nearby stars with Gaia DR3 data. This new moving group includes the nearest brown dwarf WISE J104915.57-531906.1 AB (Luhman 16 AB) at a distance of 2 pc, which was previously suspected to be young (600-800 Myr) based on a comparison of its dynamical mass measurements with brown dwarf evolutionary models. We use empirical color-magnitude sequences, stellar activity and gyrochronology to determine that this new group is roughly coeval with the Coma Ber open cluster, with an isochronal age of 510 $\pm$ 95 Myr. This newly discovered group will be useful to refine the age and chemical composition of Luhman 16 AB, which is already one of the best substellar benchmarks known to date. Furthermore, the Oceanus moving group is one of the nearest young moving groups identified to date, making it a valuable laboratory for the study of exoplanets and substellar members, with 8 brown dwarf candidate members already identified here., Comment: Accepted in ApJ. 32 pages, 6 figures, 6 tables

Precise radial velocity (PRV) surveys are important for the search of Earth analogs around nearby bright stars. Such planets induce a small stellar reflex motion with RV amplitude of $\sim$10 cm/s. Detecting such a small RV signal poses important challenges to instrumentation, data analysis, and the precision of astrophysical models to mitigate stellar jitter. In this work, we investigate an important component in the PRV error budget - the spectral contamination from the Earth's atmosphere (tellurics). We characterize the effects of telluric absorption on the RV precision and quantify its contribution to the RV budget over time and across a wavelength range of 350 nm - 2.5$\mu$m. We investigate the effectiveness in mitigating tellurics using simulated spectra of a solar twin star with telluric contamination over a year's worth of observations, and we extracted the RVs using two commonly adopted algorithms: dividing out a telluric model before performing cross-correlation or Forward Modeling the observed spectrum incorporating a telluric model. We assume various degrees of cleanness in removing the tellurics, including mimicking the lack of accurate knowledge of the telluric lines by using a mismatched line profile to model the "observed" tellurics. We conclude that the RV errors caused by telluric absorption can be suppressed to close to or even below the photon-limited precision in the optical region, especially in the blue, around 1-10 cm/s. At red through near-infrared wavelengths, however, the residuals of tellurics can induce an RV error on the m/s level even under the most favorable assumptions for telluric removal, leading to significant systematic noise in the RV time series and periodograms. If the red-optical or near-infrared becomes critical in the mitigation of stellar activity, systematic errors from tellurics can be eliminated with a space mission such as EarthFinder., Comment: 29 pages, 11 figures. White dwarfs have been successfully used as cosmochronometers in the literature, however their reach has been limited in comparison to their potential. We present wdwarfdate, a publicly available Python package to derive the Bayesian age of a white dwarf, based on its effective temperature (Teff) and surface gravity (logg). We make this software easy to use with the goal of transforming the usage of white dwarfs as cosmochronometers into an accessible tool. The code estimates the mass and cooling age of the white dwarf, as well as the mass and main-sequence age of the progenitor star, allowing for a determination of the total age of the object. We test the reliability of the method by estimating the parameters of white dwarfs from previous studies, and find agreement with the literature within measurement errors. By analyzing the limitation of the code we find a typical uncertainty of 10% on the total age when both input parameters have uncertainties of 1%, and an uncertainty of 25% on the total age when Teff has an uncertainty of 10% and logg of 1%. Furthermore, wdwarfdate assumes single star evolution, and can be applied to calculate the total age of a white dwarf with parameters in the range 1,500

We present the results of a density-based clustering analysis of the 6-dimensional XYZ Galactic positions and UVW space velocities of nearby ($\leq$ 200 pc) Gaia EDR3 stars with radial velocities using HDBSCAN, in opposition to previous studies that only included positions and tangential velocities. Among the 241 recovered clusters, we identify more than 50 known associations, 32 new candidate stellar streams aged 100 Myr-3 Gyr, 9 extensions of known Theia groups uncovered by Kounkel & Covey (2019), and 8 newly recognized coronae around nearby open clusters. Three confirmed exoplanet-hosting stars and three more TESS transiting exoplanet candidates are part of the new groups discovered here, including TOI-1807 and TOI-2076 from Hedges et al. (2021) that were suspected to belong to a yet unidentified moving group. The new groups presented here were not previously recognized because of their older ages, low spatial density, and projection effects that spread out the tangential velocities of their nearby co-moving members. Several newly identified structures reach distances within 60 pc of the Sun, providing new grounds for the identification of isolated planetary-mass objects. The nearest member of the newly recognized corona of Volans-Carina is V419 Hya, a known young debris disk star at a distance of 22 pc. The Disk Detective citizen science project recently released a new catalog of disk candidates found by visual inspection of images from NASA's Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mission and other surveys. We applied this new catalog of well-vetted disk candidates to search for new members of nearby young stellar associations (YSAs) using a novel technique based on Gaia data and virtual reality (VR). We examined AB Doradus, Argus, $\beta$ Pictoris, Carina, Columba, Octans-Near, Tucana-Horologium, and TW Hya by displaying them in VR together with other nearby stars, color-coded to show infrared excesses found via Disk Detective. Using this method allows us to find new association members in mass regimes where isochrones are degenerate. We propose ten new YSA members with infrared excesses: three of AB Doradus (HD 44775, HD 40540 and HD 44510), one of $\beta$ Pictoris (HD 198472), two of Octans-Near (HD 157165 and BD+35 2953), and four disk-hosting members of a combined population of Carina, Columba and Tucana-Horologium: CPD-57 937, HD 274311, HD 41992, and WISEA J092521.90-673224.8. This last object (J0925) appears to be an extreme debris disk with a fractional infrared luminosity of $3.7 \times 10^{-2}$. We also propose two new members of AB Doradus that do not show infrared excesses: TYC 6518-1857-1 and CPD-25 1292. We find HD 15115 appears to be a member of Tucana-Horologium rather than $\beta$ Pictoris. We advocate for membership in Columba-Carina of HD 30447, CPD-35 525, and HD 35841. Finally, we propose that three M dwarfs, previously considered members of Tuc-Hor are better considered a separate association, tentatively called ``Smethells 165''., Comment: 26 pages; 17 figures, 3 tables. We present the validation of a transiting low-density exoplanet orbiting the M2.5 dwarf TOI 620 discovered by the NASA TESS mission. We utilize photometric data from both TESS and ground-based follow-up observations to validate the ephemerides of the 5.09-day transiting signal and vet false positive scenarios. High-contrast imaging data are used to resolve the stellar host and exclude stellar companions at separations $\gtrsim 0.2''$. We obtain follow-up spectroscopy and corresponding precise radial velocities (RVs) with multiple PRV spectrographs to confirm the planetary nature of the transiting exoplanet. We calculate a 5$\sigma$ upper limit of $M_P < 7.1$ M$_\oplus$ and $\rho_P < 0.74$ g cm$^{-3}$, and we identify a non-transiting 17.7-day candidate. We also find evidence for a substellar (1-20 M$_{\rm J}$) companion with a projected separation $\lesssim 20$ au from a combined analysis of Gaia, AO imaging, and RVs. With the discovery of this outer companion, we carry out a detailed exploration of the possibilities that TOI 620 b might instead be a circum-secondary planet or a pair of eclipsing binary stars orbiting the host in a hierarchical triple system. We find, under scrutiny, that we can exclude both of these scenarios from the multi-wavelength transit photometry, thus validating TOI 620 b as a low-density exoplanet transiting the central star in this system. The low density of TOI 620 b makes it one of the most amenable exoplanets for atmospheric characterization, such as with JWST and Ariel, validated or confirmed by the TESS mission to date., Comment: 64 pages, 34 figures, 22 tables. We explore the transit timing variations (TTVs) of the young (22 Myr) nearby AU Mic planetary system. For AU Mic b, we introduce three Spitzer (4.5 $\mu$m) transits, five TESS transits, 11 LCO transits, one PEST transit, one Brierfield transit, and two transit timing measurements from Rossiter-McLaughlin observations; for AU Mic c, we introduce three TESS transits. We present two independent TTV analyses. First, we use EXOFASTv2 to jointly model the Spitzer and ground-based transits and to obtain the midpoint transit times. We then construct an O--C diagram and model the TTVs with Exo-Striker. Second, we reproduce our results with an independent photodynamical analysis. We recover a TTV mass for AU Mic c of 10.8$^{+2.3}_{-2.2}$ M$_{E}$. We compare the TTV-derived constraints to a recent radial-velocity (RV) mass determination. We also observe excess TTVs that do not appear to be consistent with the dynamical interactions of b and c alone, and do not appear to be due to spots or flares. Thus, we present a hypothetical non-transiting "middle-d" candidate exoplanet that is consistent with the observed TTVs, the candidate RV signal, and would establish the AU Mic system as a compact resonant multi-planet chain in a 4:6:9 period commensurability. These results demonstrate that the AU Mic planetary system is dynamically interacting producing detectable TTVs, and the implied orbital dynamics may inform the formation mechanisms for this young system. While stars are often found in binary systems, brown dwarf binaries are much rarer. Brown dwarf--brown dwarf pairs are typically difficult to resolve because they often have very small separations. Using brown dwarfs discovered with data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) via the Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 citizen science project, we inspected other, higher resolution, sky surveys for overlooked cold companions. During this process we discovered the brown dwarf binary system CWISE J0146$-$0508AB, which we find has a very small chance alignment probability based on the similar proper motions of the components of the system. Using follow-up near-infrared spectroscopy with Keck/NIRES, we determined component spectral types of L4 and L8 (blue), making CWISE J0146$-$0508AB one of only a few benchmark systems with a blue L dwarf. At an estimated distance of $\sim$40 pc, CWISE J0146$-$0508AB has a projected separation of $\sim$129 AU, making it the widest separation brown dwarf pair found to date. We find that such a wide separation for a brown dwarf binary may imply formation in a low-density star-forming region., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We present a survey for photometric variability in young, low-mass brown dwarfs with the Spitzer Space Telescope. The 23 objects in our sample show robust signatures of youth and share properties with directly-imaged exoplanets. We present three new young objects: 2MASS J03492367$+$0635078, 2MASS J09512690 $-$8023553 and 2MASS J07180871$-$6415310. We detect variability in 13 young objects, and find that young brown dwarfs are highly likely to display variability across the L2--T4 spectral type range. In contrast, the field dwarf variability occurrence rate drops for spectral types $>$L9. We examine the variability amplitudes of young objects and find an enhancement in maximum amplitudes compared to field dwarfs. We speculate that the observed range of amplitudes within a spectral type may be influenced by secondary effects such as viewing inclination and/or rotation period. We combine our new rotation periods with the literature to investigate the effects of mass on angular momentum evolution. While high mass brown dwarfs ($>30 M_{\mathrm{Jup}}$) spin up over time, the same trend is not apparent for lower mass objects ($<30 M_{\mathrm{Jup}}$), likely due to the small number of measured periods for old, low-mass objects. The rotation periods of companion brown dwarfs and planetary-mass objects are consistent with those of isolated objects with similar ages and masses, suggesting similar angular momentum histories. Within the AB Doradus group, we find a high variability occurrence rate and evidence for common angular momentum evolution. The results are encouraging for future variability searches in directly-imaged exoplanets with facilities such as the James Webb Space Telescope and 30-meter telescopes.

In an effort to identify nearby and unusual cold objects in the solar neighborhood, we searched for previously unidentified moving objects using CatWISE2020 proper motion data combined with machine learning methods. We paired the motion candidates with their counterparts in 2MASS, UHS, and VHS. Then we searched for white dwarf, brown dwarf, and subdwarf outliers on the resulting color-color diagrams. This resulted in the discovery of 16 new dwarfs including two nearby M dwarfs (< 30 pc), a possible young L dwarf, a high motion early T dwarf and 3 later T dwarfs. Through the Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 citizen science project we discovered a late-type L dwarf co-moving with the young K0 star BD+60 1417 at a projected separation of 37" or 1662 AU. The secondary - CWISER J124332.12+600126.2 (W1243) - is detected in both the CatWISE2020 and 2MASS reject tables. The photometric distance and CatWISE proper motion both match that of the primary within ~1sigma and our estimates for chance alignment yield a zero probability. Follow-up near infrared spectroscopy reveals W1243 to be a very red 2MASS color(J-Ks=2.72), low-surface gravity source that we classify as L6 - L8gamma. Its spectral morphology strongly resembles that of confirmed late-type L dwarfs in 10 - 150 Myr moving groups as well as that of planetary mass companions. The position on near- and mid-infrared color-magnitude diagrams indicates the source is redder and fainter than the field sequence, a telltale sign of an object with thick clouds and a complex atmosphere. For the primary we obtained new optical spectroscopy and analyzed all available literature information for youth indicators. We conclude that the Li I abundance, its loci on color-magnitude and color-color diagrams, and the rotation rate revealed in multiple TESS sectors are all consistent with an age of 50 - 150 Myr. Using our re-evaluated age of the primary, the Gaia parallax along with the photometry and spectrum for W1243 we find a Teff=1303+/-31 K, logg=4.3+/-0.17 cm s-2, and a mass of 15+/-5 MJup. We find a physical separation of ~1662 AU and a mass ratio of ~0.01 for this system. Placing it in context with the diverse collection of binary stars, brown dwarf and planetary companions, the BD+60 1417 system falls in a sparsely sampled area where the formation pathway is difficult to assess., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present updated radial-velocity (RV) analyses of the AU Mic system. AU Mic is a young (22 Myr) early M dwarf known to host two transiting planets - $P_{b}\sim8.46$ days, $R_{b}=4.38_{-0.18}^{+0.18}\ R_{\oplus}$, $P_{c}\sim18.86$ days, $R_{c}=3.51_{-0.16}^{+0.16}\ R_{\oplus}$. With visible RVs from CARMENES-VIS, CHIRON, HARPS, HIRES, {\sc {\textsc{Minerva}}}-Australis, and TRES, as well as near-infrared (NIR) RVs from CARMENES-NIR, CSHELL, IRD, iSHELL, NIRSPEC, and SPIRou, we provide a $5\sigma$ upper limit to the mass of AU Mic c of $M_{c}\leq20.13\ M_{\oplus}$ and present a refined mass of AU Mic b of $M_{b}=20.12_{-1.57}^{+1.72}\ M_{\oplus}$. Used in our analyses is a new RV modeling toolkit to exploit the wavelength dependence of stellar activity present in our RVs via wavelength-dependent Gaussian processes. By obtaining near-simultaneous visible and near-infrared RVs, we also compute the temporal evolution of RV-``color'' and introduce a regressional method to aid in isolating Keplerian from stellar activity signals when modeling RVs in future works. Using a multi-wavelength Gaussian process model, we demonstrate the ability to recover injected planets at $5\sigma$ significance with semi-amplitudes down to $\approx$ 10\,m\,s$^{-1}$ with a known ephemeris, more than an order of magnitude below the stellar activity amplitude. However, we find that the accuracy of the recovered semi-amplitudes is $\sim$50\% for such signals with our model.

We present the first exoplanet atmosphere detection made as part of the SPIRou Legacy Survey, a Large Observing Program of 300 nights exploiting the capabilities of SPIRou, the new near-infrared high-resolution (R ~ 70 000) spectro-polarimeter installed on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT; 3.6-m). We observed two transits of HD 189733, an extensively studied hot Jupiter that is known to show prominent water vapor absorption in its transmission spectrum. When combining the two transits, we successfully detect the planet's water vapor absorption at 5.9 sigma using a cross-correlation t-test, or with a Delta BIC >10 using a log-likelihood calculation. Using a Bayesian retrieval framework assuming a parametrized T-P profile atmosphere models, we constrain the planet atmosphere parameters, in the region probed by our transmission spectrum, to the following values: VMR[H2O] = -4.4^{+0.4}_{-0.4}, and P_cloud >~ 0.2 bar (grey clouds), both of which are consistent with previous studies of this planet. Our retrieved water volume mixing ratio is slightly sub-solar although, combining it with the previously retrieved super-solar CO abundances from other studies would imply super-solar C/O ratio. We furthermore measure a net blue shift of the planet signal of -4.62^{+0.46}_{-0.44} km s-1, which is somewhat larger than many previous measurements and unlikely to result solely from winds in the planet's atmosphere, although it could possibly be explained by a transit signal dominated by the trailing limb of the planet. Through the Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 citizen science project, we have identified a wide-separation ($\sim$10', $\sim$9900 au projected) substellar companion to the nearby ($\sim$17.5 pc), mid-M dwarf Ross 19. We have developed a new formalism for determining chance alignment probabilities based on the BANYAN $\Sigma$ tool, and find a 100% probability that this is a physically associated pair. Through a detailed examination of Ross 19A, we find that the system is metal-poor ([Fe/H]=$-$0.40$\pm$0.12) with an age of 7.2$^{+3.8}_{-3.6}$ Gyr. Combining new and existing photometry and astrometry, we find that Ross 19B is one of the coldest known wide-separation companions, with a spectral type on the T/Y boundary, an effective temperature of 500$^{+115}_{-100}$ K, and a mass in the range 15-40 $M_{\rm Jup}$. This new, extremely cold benchmark companion is a compelling target for detailed characterization with future spectroscopic observations using facilities such as the Hubble Space Telescope or James Webb Space Telescope., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

We propose that fourteen co-moving groups of stars uncovered by Kounkel & Covey (2019) may be related to known nearby moving groups and bridge those and nearby open clusters with similar ages and space velocities. This indicates that known nearby moving groups may be spatially much more extended than previously though, and some of them might be parts of tidal tails around the cores of known open clusters, reminiscent of those recently found around the Hyades and a handful of other nearby clusters. For example, we find that both the nearby Carina and Columba associations may be linked to Theia 208 from Kounkel & Covey (2019) and together form parts of a large tidal tail around the Platais 8 open cluster. The AB Doradus moving group and Theia 301 may form a trailing tidal tail behind the Pleiades open cluster, with hints of a possible leading tidal tail in Theia 369. We similarly find that IC 2391 and its tidal tails identified by Meingast et al. (2021) may be extended by the nearby Argus association and are possibly further extended by Theia 115. The nearby Octans and Octans-Near associations, as well as Theia 94 and 95, may form a large tidal tail leading the poorly studied Platais 5 open cluster candidate. While a preliminary analysis of Gaia color-magnitude sequences hint that these structures are plausibly related, more observational evidence is still required to corroborate their consistent ages and space velocities. These observations may change our current understanding of nearby moving groups and the different pathways through which they can form. We present the discovery of an $18.5\pm0.5$M$_{\rm Jup}$ brown dwarf (BD) companion to the M0V star TOI-1278. The system was first identified through a percent-deep transit in TESS photometry; further analysis showed it to be a grazing transit of a Jupiter-sized object. Radial velocity (RV) follow-up with the SPIRou near-infrared high-resolution velocimeter and spectropolarimeter in the framework of the 300-night SPIRou Legacy Survey (SLS) carried out at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) led to the detection of a Keplerian RV signal with a semi-amplitude of $2306\pm10$ m/s in phase with the 14.5-day transit period, having a slight but non-zero eccentricity. The intermediate-mass ratio ($M_\star/M_{\rm{comp}} \sim31$) is unique for having such a short separation ($0.095\pm0.001$ AU) among known M-dwarf systems. Schneider et al. (2020) presented the discovery of WISEA J041451.67-585456.7 and WISEA J181006.18-101000.5, which appear to be the first examples of extreme T-type subdwarfs (esdTs; metallicity <= -1 dex, T_eff <= 1400 K). Here we present new discoveries and follow-up of three T-type subdwarf candidates, with an eye toward expanding the sample of such objects with very low metallicity and extraordinarily high kinematics, properties that suggest membership in the Galactic halo. Keck/NIRES near-infrared spectroscopy of WISEA J155349.96+693355.2, a fast-moving object discovered by the Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 citizen science project, confirms that it is a mid-T subdwarf. With H_W2 = 22.3 mag, WISEA J155349.96+693355.2 has the largest W2 reduced proper motion among all spectroscopically confirmed L and T subdwarfs, suggesting that it may be kinematically extreme. Nevertheless, our modeling of the WISEA J155349.96+693355.2 near-infrared spectrum indicates that its metallicity is only mildly subsolar. In analyzing the J155349.96+693355.2 spectrum, we present a new grid of low-temperature, low-metallicity model atmosphere spectra. We also present the discoveries of two new esdT candidates, CWISE J073844.52-664334.6 and CWISE J221706.28-145437.6, based on their large motions and colors similar to those of the two known esdT objects. In this work we examine M dwarf rotation rates at a range of ages to establish benchmarks for Mdwarf gyrochronology. This work includes a sample of 713 spectroscopically-classified M0-M8 dwarfs with new rotation rates measured from K2 light curves. We analyzed data and recover rotation rates for 179 of these objects. We add these to rotation rates for members of clusters with known ages (5-700 Myr), as well as objects assumed to have field ages ($>$1 Gyr). We use Gaia DR2 parallax and (G-GRP) photometry to create color-magnitude diagrams to compare objects across samples. We use color-period plots to analyze the period distributions across age, as well as incorporate Halpha equivalent width and tangential velocity where possible to further comment on age dependence. We find that the age of transition from rapid to slow rotation in clusters, which we define as an elbow in the period-color plots, depends on spectral type. Later spectral types transition at older ages: M4 for Praesepe at 700 Myr, one of the oldest clusters for which M dwarf rotation rates have been measured. The transition from active to inactive Halpha equivalent width also occurs at this elbow, as objects transition from rapid rotation to the slowly rotating sequence. Redder or smaller stars remain active at older ages. Finally, using Gaia kinematics we find evidence for rotation stalling for late Ms in the field sample, suggesting the transition happens much later for mid to late-type M dwarfs., Comment: 30 pages, 20 figures

In this work, we calibrate the relationship between Halpha emission and M dwarf ages. We compile a sample of 892 M dwarfs with Halpha equivalent width (HaEW) measurements from the literature that are either co-moving with a white dwarf of known age (21 stars) or in a known young association (871 stars). In this sample we identify 7 M dwarfs that are new candidate members of known associations. By dividing the stars into active and inactive categories according to their HaEW and spectral type (SpT), we find that the fraction of active dwarfs decreases with increasing age, and the form of the decline depends on SpT. Using the compiled sample of age-calibrators we find that HaEW and fractional Halpha luminosity (LHaLbol) decrease with increasing age. HaEW for SpT

We report the discovery of a circumstellar debris disk viewed nearly edge-on and associated with the young, K1 star BD+45$^{\circ}$598 using high-contrast imaging at 2.2$\mu$m obtained at the W.M.~Keck Observatory. We detect the disk in scattered light with a peak significance of $\sim$5$\sigma$ over three epochs, and our best-fit model of the disk is an almost edge-on $\sim$70 AU ring, with inclination angle $\sim$87$^\circ$. Using the NOEMA interferometer at the Plateau de Bure Observatory operating at 1.3mm, we find resolved continuum emission aligned with the ring structure seen in the 2.2$\mu$m images. We estimate a fractional infrared luminosity of $L_{IR}/L_{tot}$ $\simeq6^{+2}_{-1}$$\times$$10^{-4}$, higher than that of the debris disk around AU Mic. Several characteristics of BD+45$^{\circ}$598, such as its galactic space motion, placement in a color-magnitude diagram, and strong presence of Lithium, are all consistent with its membership in the $\beta$ Pictoris Moving Group with an age of 23$\pm$3 Myr. However, the galactic position for BD+45$^{\circ}$598 is slightly discrepant from previously-known members of the $\beta$ Pictoris Moving Group, possibly indicating an extension of members of this moving group to distances of at least 70pc. BD+45$^{\circ}$598 appears to be an example from a population of young circumstellar debris systems associated with newly identified members of young moving groups that can be imaged in scattered light, key objects for mapping out the early evolution of planetary systems from $\sim$10-100 Myr. This target will also be ideal for northern-hemisphere, high-contrast imaging platforms to search for self-luminous, planetary mass companions residing in this system., Comment: 11 pages, Accepted to ApJ

We present the discovery of rapid photometric variability in three ultra-cool dwarfs from long-duration monitoring with the Spitzer Space Telescope. The T7, L3.5, and L8 dwarfs have the shortest photometric periods known to date: ${1.080}^{+0.004}_{-0.005}$ h, ${1.14}^{+0.03}_{-0.01}$ h, and ${1.23}^{+0.01}_{-0.01}$ h, respectively. We confirm the rapid rotation through moderate-resolution infrared spectroscopy, which reveals projected rotational velocities between 79 and 104 km s$^{-1}$. We compare the near-infrared spectra to photospheric models to determine the objects' fundamental parameters and radial velocities. We find that the equatorial rotational velocities for all three objects are $\gtrsim$100 km s$^{-1}$. The three L and T dwarfs reported here are the most rapidly spinning and likely the most oblate field ultra-cool dwarfs known to date. Correspondingly, all three are excellent candidates for seeking auroral radio emission and net optical/infrared polarization. As of this writing, 78 L-, T-, and Y-dwarf rotation periods have now been measured. We present final Spitzer trigonometric parallaxes for 361 L, T, and Y dwarfs. We combine these with prior studies to build a list of 525 known L, T, and Y dwarfs within 20 pc of the Sun, 38 of which are presented here for the first time. Using published photometry and spectroscopy as well as our own follow-up, we present an array of color-magnitude and color-color diagrams to further characterize census members, and we provide polynomial fits to the bulk trends. Using these characterizations, we assign each object a $T_{\rm eff}$ value and judge sample completeness over bins of $T_{\rm eff}$ and spectral type. Except for types $\ge$ T8 and $T_{\rm eff} <$ 600K, our census is statistically complete to the 20-pc limit. We compare our measured space densities to simulated density distributions and find that the best fit is a power law ($dN/dM \propto M^{-\alpha}$) with $\alpha = 0.6{\pm}0.1$. We find that the evolutionary models of Saumon & Marley correctly predict the observed magnitude of the space density spike seen at 1200K $< T_{\rm eff} <$ 1350K, believed to be caused by an increase in the cooling timescale across the L/T transition. Defining the low-mass terminus using this sample requires a more statistically robust and complete sample of dwarfs $\ge$Y0.5 and with $T_{\rm eff} <$ 400K. We conclude that such frigid objects must exist in substantial numbers, despite the fact that few have so far been identified, and we discuss possible reasons why they have largely eluded detection., Comment: 101 pages, 31 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), currently scheduled to launch in 2021, will dramatically advance our understanding of exoplanetary systems with its ability to directly image and characterise planetary-mass companions at wide separations through coronagraphy. Using state-of-the-art simulations of JWST performance, in combination with the latest evolutionary models, we present the most sophisticated simulated mass sensitivity limits of JWST coronagraphy to date. In particular, we focus our efforts towards observations of members within the nearby young moving groups $\beta$ Pictoris and TW Hya. These limits indicate that whilst JWST will provide little improvement towards imaging exoplanets at short separations, at wide separations the increase in sensitivity is dramatic. We predict JWST will be capable of imaging sub-Jupiter mass objects beyond ~30 au, sub-Saturn mass objects beyond ~50 au, and that beyond ~100 au, JWST will be capable of directly imaging companions as small as 0.1 $M_\textrm{J}$ - at least an order of magnitude improvement over the leading ground-based instruments. Probing this unexplored parameter space will be of immediate value to modelling efforts focused on planetary formation and population synthesis. We present Spitzer follow-up imaging of 95 candidate extremely cold brown dwarfs discovered by the Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 citizen science project, which uses visually perceived motion in multi-epoch WISE images to identify previously unrecognized substellar neighbors to the Sun. We measure Spitzer [3.6]-[4.5] color to phototype our brown dwarf candidates, with an emphasis on pinpointing the coldest and closest Y dwarfs within our sample. The combination of WISE and Spitzer astrometry provides quantitative confirmation of the transverse motion of 75 of our discoveries. Nine of our motion-confirmed objects have best-fit linear motions larger than 1"/yr; our fastest-moving discovery is WISEA J155349.96+693355.2 (total motion ~2.15"/yr), a possible T type subdwarf. We also report a newly discovered wide-separation (~400 AU) T8 comoving companion to the white dwarf LSPM J0055+5948 (the fourth such system to be found), plus a candidate late T companion to the white dwarf LSR J0002+6357 at 5.5' projected separation (~8,700 AU if associated). Among our motion-confirmed targets, five have Spitzer colors most consistent with spectral type Y. Four of these five have exceptionally red Spitzer colors suggesting types of Y1 or later, adding considerably to the small sample of known objects in this especially valuable low-temperature regime. [Abbreviated] We present an analysis of the newly identified $\mu$ Tau Association (MUTA) of young stars at $\sim$ 150 pc from the Sun that is part of the large Cas-Tau structure, coeval and co-moving with the $\alpha$ Persei cluster. We identify more than 500 candidate members using Gaia DR2 data and the BANYAN $\Sigma$ tool (Gagn\'e et al. 2018) and we determine an age of $62 \pm 7$ Myr for its population based on an empirical comparison of its color-magnitude diagram sequence with those of other nearby young associations. The MUTA is related to the Theia 160 group of Kounkel & Covey (2019) and corresponds to the e Tau group of Liu et al. (2020). As part of this analysis, we introduce an iterative method based on spectral templates to perform an accurate correction of interstellar extinction of Gaia DR2 photometry, needed because of its wide photometric bandpasses. We show that the members of the MUTA display an expected increased rate of stellar activity and faster rotation rates compared with older stars, and that literature measurements of the lithium equivalent width of nine G0 to K3-type members are consistent with our age determination. We show that the present-day mass function of the MUTA is consistent with other known nearby young associations. We identify WD 0340+103 as a hot, massive white dwarf remnant of a B2 member that left its planetary nebula phase only 270,000 years ago, posing an independent age constraint of $60_{-6}^{+8}$ Myr for the MUTA., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 62 pages, 28 figures, 12 tables

We present the discoveries of WISEA J041451.67-585456.7 and WISEA J181006.18-101000.5, two low-temperature (1200$-$1400 K), high proper motion T-type subdwarfs. Both objects were discovered via their high proper motion ($>$0.5 arcsec yr$^{-1}$); WISEA J181006.18-101000.5 as part of the NEOWISE proper motion survey and WISEA J041451.67-585456.7 as part of the citizen science project Backyard Worlds; Planet 9. We have confirmed both as brown dwarfs with follow-up near-infrared spectroscopy. Their spectra and near-infrared colors are unique amongst known brown dwarfs, with some colors consistent with L-type brown dwarfs and other colors resembling those of the latest-type T dwarfs. While no forward model consistently reproduces the features seen in their near-infrared spectra, the closest matches suggest very low metallicities ([Fe/H] $\leq$ -1), making these objects likely the first examples of extreme subdwarfs of the T spectral class (esdT). WISEA J041451.67-585456.7 and WISEA J181006.18-101000.5 are found to be part of a small population of objects that occupy the "substellar transition zone," and have the lowest masses and effective temperatures of all objects in this group., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

EarthFinder is a NASA Astrophysics Probe mission concept selected for study as input to the 2020 Astrophysics National Academies Decadal Survey. The EarthFinder concept is based on a dramatic shift in our understanding of how PRV measurements should be made. We propose a new paradigm which brings the high precision, high cadence domain of transit photometry as demonstrated by Kepler and TESS to the challenges of PRV measurements at the cm/s level. This new paradigm takes advantage of: 1) broad wavelength coverage from the UV to NIR which is only possible from space to minimize the effects of stellar activity; 2) extremely compact, highly stable, highly efficient spectrometers (R>150,000) which require the diffraction-limited imaging possible only from space over a broad wavelength range; 3) the revolution in laser-based wavelength standards to ensure cm/s precision over many years; 4) a high cadence observing program which minimizes sampling-induced period aliases; 5) exploiting the absolute flux stability from space for continuum normalization for unprecedented line-by-line analysis not possible from the ground; and 6) focusing on the bright stars which will be the targets of future imaging missions so that EarthFinder can use a ~1.5 m telescope., Comment: NASA Probe Mission concept white paper for 2020 Astrophysics National Academies Decadal Survey
