Petroleum engineering ,BOT,Black Oil Tables - Abstract
Summarization: For depletion-drive reservoirs, which constitute the vast majority of the running projects, many operators still use black-oil simulation to speed up calculations during which the PVT values are obtained from prior defined Black Oil Tables (BOT). These Tables are generated a) by use of correlations, b) by transforming computationally the Differential Vaporization (DV) laboratory data to take into account the transfer of fluids from the reservoir to surface via the so called Composite Vaporization path (CV) thus emulating the Composite Differential Vaporization (DVC) process or c) are produced by using tuned EoS models simulating the DVC as it is widely believed that the differential liberation path represents more closely the variation of the reservoir gas and liquid phase compositions within the reservoir during pressure decline. When the dependence of equilibrium k-values with composition becomes significant, compositional simulation is required and an EoS model is used to provide phase behavior. In that case, the solution of the phase behavior problem during simulation runs consumes a considerable part of the total CPU time required accounting up to 70% for Implicit Pressure Explicit Concentration (IMPEC) realizations. In fact, for solving the non-linear problem, the EoS based phase equilibrium computations usually need to be repeated two to four times per grid block and time step, depending on the timestep size and the proximity of the reservoir conditions to the critical ones, to achieve convergence of the Newton-Raphson algorithm. In this work, the application of the different approaches for generating BOT for oils are reviewed and guidelines are issued for different type of fluids. Several reservoir simulation runs were conducted using a 3-component synthetic oil, a volatile and a near critical oil and the compositional path that is followed by the equilibrium oil and gas phases was monitored both spatially and timewise. It is shown that down to relatively low pressures this path follows very closely that of the Constant Composition Expansion (CCE) study although at pressures close to the abandonment one it might shift slightly towards the DV path. As a consequence, the reservoir equilibrium phases at each cell were found to exhibit PVT values very close to those obtained by flashing the equilibrium phases produced from the CCE path to the surface separation conditions (CCES). Only at low pressures the volumetric factors exhibit an increased variance and are shown to lie between the values obtained from CCES and DVC. Moreover, the PVT values of the equilibrium phases of the reservoir fluids obtained from the simulations were compared to those obtained either by traditional DV-to-CV converting methods (such as those of Dake and McCain) or by established correlations. The above findings render the selection of the CCE compositional path as the most suitable one for generating BOTs. They also demonstrate that the compositions encountered during a compositional simulation run can be described by a limited set of tie-lines, thus increasing the confidence in the utilization of promising phase behavior accelerating methods such as k-value generating models and the Tie-Line Tabulation approach (CSAT). Reduced flash calculations ,Binary interaction parameters matrix decomposition ,Cubic equation of state ,Spectral analysis ,Phase equilibrium calculations acceleration - Abstract
Summarization: Fast and accurate phase equilibrium calculations have been a hot research topic during the past decades due to the increased computational effort they impose in process simulation. Reduction methods have attracted significant interest as a means to accelerate calculations by decreasing the problem's dimensionality. However, when many binary interaction parameters (BIPs) exhibit non-zero values, reduction methods offer limited advantage and the introduction of approximation error is inevitable. In this work a new method is presented for replacing the conventional spectral decomposition basis vectors by new ones so that the approximation error of the energy parameter is minimized instead of that of BIP matrix. The new reduced variables set leads to improved flash calculations accuracy, thus allowing them to be performed at a given accuracy level using fewer reduced variables compared to the conventional approach. Moreover, it is shown that the formulation of the proposed matrix decomposition method is a generalization of the spectral analysis one. The extension of the proposed method to temperature-dependent BIPs is also discussed. A set of examples demonstrates the efficiency of the proposed method. The method can be readily applied to all existing phase behavior algorithms within the reduced variables framework as it intervenes solely on the treatment of the BIP matrix. Summarization: The scope of this work is to investigate the applicability of the evolving factor analysis (EFA) in the characterization of the non-saturated fraction of petroleum mixtures by high performance liquid chromatography coupled with UV diode array detection (HPLC-UV-DAD). The EFA was used to interpret the signal obtained from the analysis of fluids, the aromatic peaks of which overlap to a great extent. It is shown that the method can precisely define the elution profile of each one of the constituents and determine the start and the end elution times of the main aromatic hydrocarbon groups based on their differences in the spectrum pattern. In addition, the method gives the UV spectra of the eluting constituents which can be further employed for the compositional characterization of the aromatic part of oil fractions. Presented on: Fuel

Summarization: Chemometric methods like Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Evolving Factor Analysis (EFA) have been applied to improve peaks separation, especially in HPLC UV-DAD analysis. In this work, the Independent Component Analysis (ICA) was adopted for the separation of overlapping aromatic peaks and the simultaneous determination of the underlying spectra. The application of the method on middle petroleum fractions showed an improved separation between the aromatic groups compared to the previously used methods. The determined by the ICA method UV spectra of the component groups can be further exploited for the compositional characterization of the aromatic fractions. HPLC analysis ,Aromatic groups - Abstract
Summarization: In the present work, a combined approach was adopted to improve the HPLC separation between the aromatic groups in petroleum fractions. Firstly, the analytical conditions were optimized with respect to the influence that the mobile phase composition bears on the peak resolution. Secondly, the derived HPLC-UV-DAD signal between 254 nm and 330 nm of a heavy gasoil fraction was processed using the Evolving Factor Analysis (EFA) method and the elution times of the aromatic subfractions were determined. It is demonstrated that the method achieves to determine precisely the elution profiles of the main aromatic groups based on the differences in their UV spectrum patterns. Gasoline - Abstract
Summarization: Gasoline, the key profit generator for the petroleum refining industry, is produced by blending different fuel streams coming from various production processes. The blend recipes are determined such that the properties’ specifications of the final gasoline are met, while maximizing the profitability of the product under the constraint of the gasoline components availability. Therefore, optimum control on gasoline blending operations is a key question in the refineries. In this work Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models have been developed to predict the Research Octane Number (RON) of gasoline blends produced in a Greek refinery. The developed ANN models use as input variables the volumetric content of seven most commonly used fractions in the gasoline production and their respective RON numbers. The predicting ability of the models in the multi-dimensional space determined by the input variables was thoroughly examined in order to asses its robustness. Based on the developed ANN models, the effect of each gasoline constituent on the formation of the blend RON value was revealed. Additionally, an optimization algorithm has been developed to estimate the composition of a blend displaying any desired RON value, optimized with respect to the production cost and availability of the involved gasoline fractions. Black oil tables ,Black oil simulation ,Composite differential vaporization study ,PVT properties - Abstract
Summarization: Lookup Black Oil Tables (BOT) are widely utilized by professional software packages for providing fluid properties during reservoir, wellbore and pipeline flow simulation instead of having to solve repeatedly the highly non-linear phase behavior problem at a very high CPU cost. These Tables, are either generated using an Equation of State (EoS) model already tuned to the available lab data or from the data itself or by applying available correlations of general use. Given the considerable effort and expertise required for achieving a comprehensive EoS tuning, the methods for generating the BOT utilizing the PVT lab data are still very popular. Such methods currently available are based on simplifying assumptions and often fail to match accurately the required composite vaporization Bo and Rs curves along the entire operating pressure range. In addition, these methods do not allow the recalculation of the BOTs when the selected separation train conditions are altered unless such a PVT lab separation test data is already available. In this work, an accurate method is presented to derive BOTs by combining PVT lab depletion data with properties values which can be generated by running simplified surface flash calculations. Separator gas and tank oil volumes are obtained by flashing the reservoir oil at the selected pressures using k-values generator methods and by taking advantage of the fact that, at surface train conditions, equilibrium coefficients are practically independent of composition. The results obtained can be also matched against available PVT lab report flash data or field measurements. The method was applied to several reservoir oils and the accuracy of these test cases proved to be of the order of 1% and 2% for the prediction of Bo and Rs respectively all along the operating pressure range. Finally, an approach is presented by which the generated BOTs can be accurately adjusted according to any variations of the separator train conditions without the need of additional lab data. Summarization: The application of neural network technology to multichannel image processing is presented in this paper. Topics such as image restoration, segmentation, transformation and compression are discussed, covering a wide range of image processing and analysis areas. The problems are converted to optimisation or interpolation problems through the appropriate mathematical interface. This alternative interpretation enables the application of well-known neural network structures, perfectly suited for such purposes due to the accuracy and high speed of computation. The proposed framework handles multichannel data in a compact form and, thus, it is directly applicable to remote sensing. Παρουσιάστηκε στο: COMPARES Conference

Oil spills - Abstract
Summarization: The aim of this study was to characterize samples of petroleum spills derived from the oily free-phase zone located in the subsurface of a petroleum refinery and to reveal the contained distinct petroleum fractions, thus enabling the identification of the spill origin. The samples were collected from different monitoring wells and were analyzed using gel permeation chromatography (GPC) combined with a UV-diode array detector. The PARAFAC algorithm was employed for the analysis of the 3-D experimental data matrix, which contained the areas under the chromatographic trace, measured for distinct time slices over the 270–440 nm UV range for the whole sample population. The application of the PARAFAC method revealed two significant elution profiles possessing characteristic UV signals, which were attributed to the gasoline and diesel fractions, respectively. A third elution profile was also identified which corresponded to biodegraded heavy fractions. The relative contribution of these compositional features to the oil spill samples was also identified. The presented method can be employed as a rapid and reliable fingerprinting tool in environmental studies, where petroleum pollutants of unknown composition are expected. Multivariate statistical methods such as evolving factor analysis and k-means clustering were used to interpret the signal obtained from the analysis of gas oil samples, in which strong overlapping of the eluting aromatic component groups occurs. The presented method allows the precise determination of the elution profiles of a series of aromatic component groups and therefore can be applied for their accurate quantitative determination. Phase stability ,Phase split ,Reduced variables ,EoS calculations acceleration ,Proxy models - Abstract
Summarization: The solution of the hydrocarbon phase equilibria problem through the use of an Equation of State (EoS) requires substantial computational power due to the complexity and iterative nature of the calculations particularly when the reservoir fluid needs to be described with a significant number of components. This high CPU time demand becomes particularly acute during the execution of compositional reservoir simulations as the phase equilibria problem needs to be solved repeatedly for each discretization block and at each iteration of the non-linear solver. Solving the hydrocarbon phase equilibrium problem is often reported to consume more than 50% of the simulation׳s total CPU time, thus making the speeding up of these calculations a challenge of great interest. In this work, an integrated approach is presented which utilizes classification and regression models to provide direct answers to both the phase stability and phase split problems during compositional modeling. The models are generated offline, in an automated way, once the selected EoS model is tuned and finalized and prior to setting up and running the reservoir or process simulator. First, classifiers are trained, as previously presented in the literature, utilizing the fluid׳s tuned EoS model, which label the fluid׳s state as stable or unstable for given feed composition, pressure and temperature. Second, regression models are generated so as to provide the prevailing reduced variables values, thus emulating the unknown closed-form solution of the Equation-of-State based reduced flash formulation. An unsupervised training technique is proposed to optimize the usage of the regression model׳s learning capacity. Once the models are generated an unlimited number of compositional modeling calculations can be made during which the models developed beforehand are simply called to determine directly both the stability state of the feed and the phase split reduced variables values, if the mixture is found unstable, which, in turn, will lead to the equilibrium phases properties and molar ratios. By providing the reduced variables values instead of the full equilibrium coefficients set, the regression model expression is kept simple, thus very fast to evaluate compared to the conventional iterative algorithms. The method is applicable to any type of simulation models requiring a great number of phase behavior calculations. The proposed approach is presented in two-phase equilibria formulation although it can be directly extended to multi-phase equilibria applications. Examples demonstrate the accuracy of the calculations and the very significant performance improvement achieved with respect to currently used methods. Computational engineering ,Petroleum engineering - Abstract
The sampling process of petroleum fluids is a fundamental step in the development of a reservoir, as the subsequent laboratory PVT analysis provides a plethora of information regarding the thermodynamic behavior of a fluid. Due to the high cost of laboratory experiments, these are usually performed within a specific range of conditions (pressure and temperature) imposed by the reservoir itself. For this reason, a mathematical tool is required that can computationally predict the values of the required properties under a wide range of conditions expected to be encountered during the exploitation of the field both in the reservoir and in the wells. The most commonly used mathematical tool are the Equations of State (EoSs), the accuracy of which when applied to petroleum fluids is limited and can be optimized only if the equations are adjusted so that their predictions can adequately match the available measured PVT study values. In this Master Thesis, the algorithms for simulating the Constant Composition Expansion test, the Differential Liberation test and the Separator test, which are performed to characterize reservoir fluids, were developed in the Matlab programming environment from scratch. It is important to mention that the key elements of the simulation of these PVT tests, which are the stability, flash and saturation pressure algorithms, were also developed in Matlab. The automated EoS tuning procedure was then performed using a global optimization method, the pattern search method, instead of a gradient-based method that does not always guarantee to find a global minimum and can get stuck at a local minimum. In addition, physical constraints increasing the physical soundness of the models estimations were imposed. To test how efficient this approach is, one synthetic fluid and two real reservoir fluids were employed and the superiority of the pattern search method over the conventional gradient-based optimization method was confirmed., PVT . , . . , (Constant Composition Expansion, CCE), (Differential Liberation) (Separator Test), , Matlab . PVT, , , Matlab. , EoS global optimization , pattern search, gradient-based . , . , global optimization gradient-based .

Natural gas hydrates are distributed all over the planet, mainly in marine environments and in permafrost regions. If production methods that are developed could be economically profitable, the huge amounts of reserves of natural gas hydrates would be a potential source of energy. In order to develop drilling and production operations in this type of reservoirs, formation and dissociation of hydrates should be investigated. Due to the fact that there are not many production operations conducted in gas hydrate reservoirs, and therefore there is not enough production data available, it is very important to develop numerical simulations in order to predict productions in experimental studies and field production trials. In this thesis, an overview of gas hydrate reservoirs with a focus in reservoirs located in permafrost regions, such as Mallik, Messoyakha and Alaska North Slope, has been made. The Mallik site was drilled in 1998, while the focus was Gas Hydrate Research Well Program applied to Mallik 2002 site, thermal injection and depressurization of in-situ gas hydrate-bearing formation. Three tests were conducted and three zones of hydrate layers were observed. The Messoyakha Gas Field is located in Siberian permafrost, in Russia. It was the first discovered gas hydrate field. This is the only field where long-term production took place in an area of gas hydrate reservoirs. Production of gas reached the maximum in the first years of production until 1982. Evidence for the occurrence of gas hydrates in the Alaska North Slope comes from the analysis of cores and downhole logs from the gas hydrate test wells: The Mount Elbert, and Inik Sikumi wells. Mount Elbert Gas hydrate site is located in the Milne Point Field near the Prudhoe Bay oil field. In December 2018, drilling operations finally confirmed the presence of gas hydrates reservoirs. The new method of production was used, injection of CO2, and it is shown to be technically feasible in combination with depressurization. Nankai Trough, example of offshore gas hydrate production, is presented because of the fact that two production tests were conducted in this site. Method used for production was depressurization, and the goal of this study was to prove that production from offshore gas hydrates can be used for commercial purpose., (gas hydrates) , permafrost. , . , . , . , , permafrost, Mallik, Messoyakha North Alaska Slope. Computational reservoir simulation ,PROSPER software ,Black oil model ,Black oil correlations ,Tuning process ,Matching process against field PVT data ,Reservoir/Well simulation - Abstract
Nowadays, computer simulation is the main tool of reservoir and/or production engineers to optimize production. For this task, a Pressure – Volume - Temperature (PVT) analysis must be conducted, a process that is not always feasible at early production stages. This is where black oil correlations come as the most viable solution to overcome the aforementioned obstacle. Numerous empirical formulae are available in all reservoir and well modeling software, whose utilization results to the prediction of PVT properties of a reservoir fluid. However there are two crucial questions regarding the use of black oil correlations that need to be answered. The main one is whether they are all characterized by the same accuracy in their predictions or not. In this sense, what must be done to assess their credibility is another thing that needs to be answered. Based on that, this thesis evaluates the prediction performance of the most well - known black oil correlations, against PVT measurements for different types of oil, before and after they were tuned against the available field data. These simulations were run using PROSPER, an industrial production and system analysis software. The results taken show that even for the simplest fluid, the utilized correlation should be selected properly, while the matching process on field PVT data is always recommended., Η προσομοίωση σε υπολογιστή είναι το κύριο εργαλείο των μηχανικών ταμιευτήρων/παραγωγής, στοχεύοντας στην βελτιστοποίηση της παραγωγής.

Industrial internet of things (IIoT) ,Oil and gas ,Flow assurance - Abstract
The advent of mechanical production systems, mass production and finally automation of production processes led to the fourth industrial revolution which points toward intelligent and networked systems. At the heart of ‘’industry 4.0’’ lies the Internet of Things (IoT) using digital technology. For Oil and Gas, digital transformation has been one of the most important strategic objectives with IoT device installation increasing exponentially over the past decade. The IoT is a system of interconnected computing devices, mechanical and digital machines with particular attributes and the ability to collect and share data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. Any physical object can be transformed into an IoT device if it can be connected to the internet to be controlled or transmit information. IoT and Cloud computing are closely attached. IoT creates immense amount of data, while Cloud computing provides the pathway to present this data in a useful way to the end user. The main objectives of this digitalization in the operational context are real time monitoring, optimization and achievement of superior predictive capabilities. In the present thesis the IoT is discussed and analysed, with focus on Industrial applications (IIoT) within the Oil and Gas sector, and in particular, flow assurance issues and production engineering. It clarifies the drivers of IIoT, presents the advantages and benefits and describes the challenges faced during the implementation. The goal of this research is to apply further automation with implementation of IoT on a company’s existing conventional technology, aiming to increase production, efficiency, minimize downtime and reduce costs. This study is the outcome of research done in collaboration with Hydrafact Ltd, an Edinburgh, UK based company providing consulting and technology expertise on Upstream O&G. The main focus of the study was the implementation of IoT on Hydrafact’s sensor, HydraCHEK. This product is an analytical solution for monitoring the concentration of hydrate inhibitor and salt in produced water from a pipeline. The Cloud platform used was from IBM and the IoT device was a Raspberry Pi, a small scale computer capable of accomplishing a desired task. The Raspberry Pi, was connected to HydraCHEK and the IBM Cloud through programming, enabling communication and data exchange between the sensor and the user. Programming was done both in Python language and Node-Red visual programming tool, due to the fact that both pre-exist in the Raspberry Pi and IBM Cloud. However, Python appeared to be more feasible solution. The proposed study indicates the feasibility of implementation of IoT in Oil and Gas and flow assurance. With use of such “smart” technology, operations are more efficient, production is optimised and cost is reduced.,

FTIR signal ,Oil property prediction ,Deconvolution ,Linear regression - Abstract
In order to interpret a Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) signal in its entirety, thousands of peaks would have to be identified requiring a significant amount of samples making the process not just expensive but actually impossible. The aim of this research is to instead focus on specific spectral bands in order to significantly reduce the number of required samples for interpretation. A new algorithm is proposed to deconvolve the infrared spectrum of complex hydrocarbon mixtures in the 3000-2750 cm-1, 1400-1330 cm-1 and 1000-700 cm-1 regions. The algorithm is developed based on the analysis of FTIR spectra of 33 oil fractions. The experimentally derived spectra are deconvolved by fitting 5, 2 and 7 Lorentzian distributions, corresponding to aliphatic C-H stretching vibrations, aliphatic C-H scissoring/symmetric deformation vibrations and aromatic C-H out-of-plane bending vibrations for each of the above regions respectively. The distribution of chemical structures in the oils were extracted, and correlations were studied between them and the measured saturates and aromatics percentage concentrations of the samples through the use of a linear regression model. The validity of the results was interpreted by the Root Mean Square Error of Prediction (RMSEP) and through their comparison with the errors calculated from a previous student thesis. The reliability of the selected peaks is backed up by the small calculated NLP errors and the fitting of the first and second derivatives between the composite curve and the FTIR signal. The algorithm facilitates the spectra modeling and the accurate estimation of the fitted methyl and methylene peak areas, which can be used for calculating specific compositional parameters of oil samples instead of the usually employed peak heights. Such modeling is extremely important for heavy petroleum fractions, where detailed compositional information is difficult to be obtained. The results of the research showed that the connection between the peaks and the concentration values becomes clear enough through the usage of this procedure which, with the appropriate corrections, yields low RMSEP errors., Για τη σωστή πλήρη ερμηνεία του σήματος Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR ), θα ήταν απαραίτητο χιλιάδες κορυφές να μελετηθούν πράξη η οποία θα απαιτούσε έναν σημαντικό αριθμό δειγμάτων.

Drilling engineering - Abstract
Summarization: Casing design constitutes of one of the major challenges in the oil industry. This is due to the fact that casing has to protect the well from the formation environment, which is going through and also from the variation of different conditions that occur in the subsurface. To initiate the design procedure, the construction of the pore and fracture pressure profile is required based on which, the number of the casing strings will be selected. Subsequently, the outside diameters (OD) of each casing string must be defined, as wells as the equivalent mud density (EMD), which will be used in each section. In addition, survey of the well is needed in order to convert the true vertical depth (TVD) to measured depth (MD). Finally, the calculations of the major forces that act on the well (burst, collapse and tension) are required, so that the final casing thickness and grade can be selected. The objective of this project is to provide a casing design on deviated, deep well (type slanted at target depth of 13000 ft) by taking into account the worst case scenario of all the above forces.

Equilibrium ratios ,K-values - Abstract
Summarization: Equilibrium coefficients (k-values) play a fundamental role in describing and understanding the phase behavior of reservoir fluids either inside the reservoir or on their way to the surface facilities. They correspond to the ratios that the concentration of each component in the vapor and in the liquid phase should exhibit so as to ensure thermodynamic equilibrium. The goal of this study is the evaluation of various k-values estimation methods at several pressures and temperatures against experimental data which has been obtained from several fluid samples. For this purpose, a PVT experiments data-base is utilized to provide the necessary data for the estimation of k-values at several conditions. The data-base contains data collected through a set of surface flash expansions and differential liberation studies. Furthermore, k-values are estimated from the application of the correlations of Standing (1979) and Wilson (1968) at the same conditions and the results are compared while further taking into account the range of application. More specifically the behavior of the k-values of light, intermediate and heavy components is examined as the pressure increases by means of charts and it is compared to the typical, theoretically derived k-values curves. In general good agreement is observed in the results between the two approaches at relatively low pressures, which are pressures encountered at surface facilities rather than the reservoir itself. When the pressure exhibits higher values a deviation of the results of both methods in relation to the experimental k-values is observed.

Pressure maintenance in oil production pipelines - Abstract
Summarization: The oil production in every well will ultimately decline after some production period and “intense” treatment of the reservoir, the well and/or the surface flowlines will be necessary to maintain the production at an economically viable rate. The oil recovery methods are distinguished in three major categories: primary, secondary and enhanced oil recovery. From the aforementioned categories, only the second involves intervention to the midstream facilities. Pressure maintenance of the multiphase production fluids in the flowlines is a technique, which can be easily implemented in existing installations. It may be implemented either by reducing the pressure with surface chokes and orifice plates or by boosting the pressure with new equipment (pumps and compressors). Two primary factors of the pressure maintenance have to be studied in detail and closely monitored: the flow assurance in the pipeline and the proper sizing and selection of the pressure boosting equipment (pumps and compressors). In this study, a research is conducted on multiphase flow assurance issues and particularly the ones associated with the pressure boosting techniques. Several means of pressure control exist, for example changing the opening frequency and duration of flow valves and surface chokes and installation of orifice plates, but this study focuses on the application of multiphase pumps in line with the production flowlines both onshore and offshore (not inside the well). All major types of production multiphase pumps are presented in detail, together with their operational characteristics. At the last part of the thesis, the performance of a multiphase pump in an oilfield is simulated in order to demonstrate the utility of such novel systems in the oil midstream sector.

Summarization: Natural gas is considered as the most promising fossil fuel of the future. However; its route from the production to the end use requires substantial processing. The scope of the thesis is the study of the available established technologies targeted to a product of commercial value. Basic design considerations of an acid gas removal unit and a dehydration unit are presented; where the target is the removal of H2S, CO2 and water content respectively. Simulation of an acid gas removal unit using DEA and a dehydration unit using T.E.G. was conducted in collaboration with Asprofos Engineering company, by using the Aspen HYSYS Software. A North Pars Iranian gas is introduced as a feed case study. This type of gas is considered to be lean and sour. The simulation of the designed units succeeds to produce 30 MMSCFD of natural gas rich in methane and free of H2S and water content.

Reservoir simulation - Abstract
Summarization: Objective of the study is to implement the commercially available software tools to the basic reservoir engineering problems in a real field case. Eclipse data set of Norne field, in the Norwegian sea, has been used for the study that is publicly available on https://opm-project.org/?page_id=559. Eclipse 100 and tNavigator have been used to run the simulations for verifying the feasibility of application of the ASP flooding for improving recovery. Norne benchmark case is a real field black-oil model for an oil field in the Norwegian Sea. The model included dissolved gas, vaporized oil, transmissibility multipliers, pressure-dependent porosity and transmissibility, end-point scaling for relative permeability and capillary pressure. History-matching of production and pressures has already been done and well controls that change throughout the simulation schedule have also been included in the model. Application of ASP flooding technique has been simulated in E100 and tNavigator as part of the study purpose. As matched in the history, water injection starts very early in the field. There are total 36 wells of which 9 are injection wells and the remaining 27 are production wells. Five wells are exclusively water injection wells and they have been used to inject ASP slugs along with the water. In Eclipse E100, alkaline model is a simple model that does not take any chemical reactions into consideration, but when used in conjunction with surfactant and polymer to perform an Alkaline-Surfactant- Polymer (ASP) flooding, the alkaline can reduce the adsorption of both surfactant and polymer on the rock surface, therefore enhancing the effectiveness of the surfactant and polymer drive. Eclipse and tNavigator work in the same format of E100 text pad code. Results from the both software are comparable. tNavigator has a very good graphical user interface to interact with the tool and all the graphs are defaulted and simultaneously can be viewed as the simulation time progress and it is faster than the Eclipse 100.

Enhanced oil recovery methods - Abstract
Summarization: It is widely accepted among the petroleum engineering community that Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) is currently one of the most active sectors of research in the oil industry. The first part of the present diploma thesis consists of a literature review where the commercially feasible Enhanced Oil Recovery methods are described. The oil recovery mechanisms each EOR method involves, the advantages, the disadvantages and some examples of successful field applications are presented. At the end of the literature review, the reader will have a good perception of the necessity of EOR implementation in the existing oil fields, the production potential of the EOR techniques and the ability to identify where and at which extent each EOR method can be applied. The second part of the present diploma thesis investigates the implementation of Chemical EOR methods in the H1 segment of the offshore oil field named Gullfaks that is found in the Norwegian side of the North Sea. At first, a presentation of the reservoir properties is made and then a simulation study of the reservoir is conducted using ECLIPSE - 100 (2010 version) software.

Gas production pipelines - Abstract
Summarization: This research involves the modeling of a gas field through the use of the petex simulation software. The reservoir is modeled to estimate the reserves followed by modeling the wells to generate the inflow performance curve and the vertical lift performance. Then a thorough design of the pipelines was conducted from the wellheads to the gas separator. The gas field in study consists of a single reservoir with four wells drilled for production. Two manifolds were used to connect producing fluid from the wells. The fluids were sent to a separator with an inlet pressure of 1000psig. The objective was to develop a pipeline network that will satisfy the constraint and at the same time maximize the gas production. Three sets of pipeline each with diameters 2 inches 10 inches and 20 inches were studied. The simulation was conducted with individual pipe diameter and the result was analyzed and compared against the result of the other pipes in study. Economic Analysis was performed to determine the present value of the three pipes under study. The simulations show that increasing the diameter increases the cumulative production up to a point, after which any further increase will not change the production significantly. In this study the pipelines with diameter of 20 inches seemed to have the highest present value (revenues minus the cost of the equipment) with respect to the other cases.

Production optimization ,Reservoir simulation - Abstract
Summarization: The optimization of oil production is a tedious and computationally intensive pro- cess that requires the solution of time dependent nonlinear set of partial differ- ential equations describing the flow of hydrocarbons in anisotropic porous me- dia. Optimization of production is usually performed using either gradient free techniques like genetic algorithms, particle swarm algorithms, or gradient-based techniques where the gradients are computed through the solution of the adjoint problem. A gradient-based optimization method, in which the gradient is com- puted using an adjoint formulation, is often the method of choice since in con- trast to numerical perturbation techniques that require as many objective function evaluations as the number of control parameters, the gradient using adjoint-based techniques is obtained only at a small fraction of the time spent for the evaluation of the objective function. It is well known that for non-convex optimisation prob- lems, gradient-based techniques are likely to get trapped in poor local optima. A common practise is to lunch several independent optimisation runs from different initial guesses or to combine ideas from gradient-free algorithms with gradient- based to benefit from the merits of both. An adequate sampling of the search space would require an intractable number of simulations and it is thus impossible. The aim of this work is to exploit an observation in homogeneous reservoirs, where the global optimum, when optimising cumulative oil recovery, is usually achieved from practically any initial guess. This observation suggest to optimize cumulative oil by adopting a “geology continuation” method. In this novel ap- proach the porosity and permeability fields, gradually switch from some average homogeneous values chosen heuristically for the particular benchmark, to the in- homogeneous geological properties characterizing the reservoir. The optimal con- trols from each step become the initial controls to the next step. In addition instead of maximizing the cumulative oil we suggest to minimize mod- ified versions of the residual oil function which are likely to be more convex and thus less likely to lead in poor local optima.

Thermodynamic ,Van der Waals and Platteeau ,Solid theory ,Hydrates ,Michelson stability ,CPA - Abstract
Predicting hydrate stability/formation conditions is crucial for the oil and gas industry mainly to avoid pipelines blockage during oil and gas transportation and supplying. Additionally, exploitation methods of the natural gas and CO2 storage in hydrates have started gaining attention recently. Thus, understanding under what conditions hydrates are stable or can be stabilized is very important. Based on that, accurate knowledge of hydrate modeling in the presence of salts, inhibitors and non-ideal components is a main key in all related sectors. In the first part of this work, various approaches/models available in the literature and in the industry to describe hydrates thermodynamic behavior are presented and studied in detail so that the differences in stability, solid solution theory of Van der Waals and Platteeuw and the specific thermodynamic models representing all phases that co-exist (ice, water, solid CO2) adopted in each approach are well understood. Subsequently, the accuracy of the approaches describing the phase equilibria of gas hydrates in the presence of CO2 components, high/low concentration of aqueous salt(s) and/or high/low concentration of inhibitor(s) is evaluated. The approaches studied and tested are implemented in four well known commercial software packages extensively used in the industry, that hold the following industrial/developing name and the corresponding (approach): HydraFlash/HydraFact (HF, HF72), MultiFlash/KBC (MF(CPA)/MF(RKSA), CSMGem (CSMGem), CSMHyd (CSMHyd). The accuracy comparison is run against a large database of experimentally measured hydrate dissociation conditions which has been collected from papers that appeared in the literature between 2015-2019. The collected experimental data has been reproduced using all six approaches and the obtained results have been utilized to evaluate the accuracy of each method as a function of the temperature and pressure of the system. The results obtained are analyzed in detail and the reasons explaining the accuracy/deviations of each approach are presented. It has been found that the accuracy of the six studied approaches are ordered as follows (from most to less accurate): HF > HF72 > MF CPA > MF RKSA> CSMGem > CSMHyd., Η πρόβλεψη των συνθηκών σταθερότητας / σχηματισμού υδριτών είναι ζωτικής σημασίας κυρίως για τη βιομηχανία πετρελαίου και φυσικού αερίου για να αποφευχθεί η απόφραξη των αγωγών κατά τη μεταφορά και την προμήθεια πετρελαίου και φυσικού αερίου.

Oil families' identification ,Multivariate clustering - Abstract
Summarization: As science progresses, the need for analyzing multivariate data sets is growing by the minute. Multiple disciplines, either scientific or not, require the examination of large amounts of data, in a short period of time, in order to obtain useful information. During the recent few decades, multivariate statistical analysis methods have been developed, aiming to satisfy such purposes. This dissertation deals with the implementation of multivariate data analysis methods on a given data set, derived from oil family affiliations, which originate from Williston Basin of North America. In particular, Hierarchical Clustering, k-means and Principal Component analysis have been applied on four independent models, in an attempt to extract information regarding the oil-oil correlations among the samples under study. The models used on the exploration of the compositional information were the Saturated Fraction Compositional Model, the Saturated Fraction Ratios Model, the Gasoline Range Compositional Model and the Biomarkers Compositional Model. These standard statistical methods were found to be quite insufficient in classifying the sample set into distinct familial affiliations. For this reason, the need to examine the nature of the data set arose. Compositional data represent a category on their own as they are characterized by specific numerical properties which present significant consequences when being analyzed by standard multivariate techniques. The analysis of such type of data represents a whole new chapter in the world of statistics and the need for further examination on this matter is constantly growing.
